The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks.

The window kicks off Saturday August 22 and honestly, the start looks flat and messy. For the first week, the surf is real weak and pretty poor, with cross-offshore winds and barely a bump of swell. The combined wave energy stays under 400 most of the time, and the few pulses of waist-high groundswell don’t line up with clean conditions. You’ll be sitting on the beach for the first several days unless you’re desperate for a paddle.

The only break worth talking about is Emery’s Left, a very consistent reef that loves a west swell. The water’s sitting at 70°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year—just something to note when you hop in. For the first few days, it’s mostly poor surf with light onshore winds or gentle cross-onshore chop. Not good.

Monday August 24 afternoon shows a small shift: a little 2 ft SW swell rolls in with light breeze, but it’s marginal at best—still a no-go.

Around Tuesday August 25 afternoon, we see the combined energy jump to 531 (moderate) with a 3 ft SSW swell, period at 13 seconds—decent groundswell. But the cross-onshore wind spoils it, leaving small wind ripples. Still not the call.

Wednesday August 26 picks up a bit: 4 ft S swell at 12 seconds, energy hits 800, but the moderate cross-shore breeze adds a cross-chop that kills the quality. If you’re a confident surfer, maybe you’ll find a few, but it’s not clean.

The first truly interesting window shows up around Saturday August 29 morning. We get 4 ft SW swell, 16-second period—that’s proper long-period groundswell, with combined energy at 707 (strong). Winds are light and cross-onshore, which isn’t glassy but isn’t trashing it either. The swell direction is right on for Emery’s Left—west optimum. The water is still warmer than usual. This is the best session of the first week—waves have push, shape, and there’s not much wind to ruin it. Expect some bigger sets and long lulls between them. The reef setup handles long period groundswell really well. Crowds? This place gets hit often, so expect company.

From Saturday August 29 into Sunday August 30, it holds at 4 ft to 3 ft SW, with energy staying strong in the 580-667 range. Light winds continue, a few cross-onshore periods, but overall it’s the most rideable stretch in the first 7-8 days.

Heading into the second week, the outlook is a bit more of the same—marginal surf but with more consistent moderate energy. On Monday August 31, things drop back with 3 ft SW and choppy cross-shore winds—not worth suiting up.

Tuesday September 1 morning shows 3 ft SSW swell, 16 seconds, combined energy 675, light cross-shore breeze. It’s rideable but not the standout. The afternoon picks up to 5 ft SSW, 14 seconds, energy 869 (strong) with light cross-onshore. That’s bigger—definitely for intermediate and above. For the more experienced crew, there’s fun to be had, especially as the light breeze keeps it from getting too chopped.

Thursday September 3 morning has a long-period 16-second SW swell at only 2 ft, energy 400—marginal, but the long lines might make it worth a look for a log or a mid-length if you’re fussy about quality. But wind is cross-onshore with a little ripple, so it’s not glassy.

Friday September 4 is probably the best day of the whole 16-day stretch. Morning: 4 ft SW swell, 18 seconds—very long-period groundswell—combined energy 933 (strong), and offshore wind from the west at 6 mph. That is clean, lined-up surf with good power. The swell direction matches the optimum west, so Emery’s Left should be firing with some proper walls. That afternoon holds at 4 ft SW, 17 seconds, still offshore but a bit more breeze at 9 mph. This is the standout. It’s still a week and a half out, so treat it as promising rather than locked in, but the ingredients are all there for a great session.

Saturday September 5 morning has 4 ft SW, 16 seconds, energy 745, with light cross-onshore—good but not as clean as Friday.

Sunday September 6 winds things down with 3 ft SW, 14 seconds, light wind, but the energy is still moderate at 691. A decent end to the run, but not the highlight.

Overall, the first week is a write-off except for Saturday August 29. The second week has more pulse and potential, and the clear standout is Friday September 4 morning—strong energy, long-period groundswell, offshore wind, and the reef all lined up. That’s the one to pencil in. Emery’s Left can get busy, but with waves that clean, you’ll be glad you made the trip.

Rusty out.
