The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you. This forecast is a tough one to swallow. For the whole 16-day window, from now through to the end of July, there isn't a single surfable day on offer over at El Burro.
The problem isn’t a lack of swell; we actually see some pulses of energy coming through. Around Friday the 27th and into Monday the 28th of July, the combined energy bumps up to 206 and 244 (moderate wave energy), with swell heights pushing 4 ft to 5 ft. But here’s the kicker – every single day is plagued by cross-shore or cross-onshore winds, mostly from the north, blowing at 12 to 25 mph. That’s no good. It’s creating lumpy, choppy, messy conditions, and the wave comment for every single entry is “poor surf conditions.” The swell period is mostly short too, sitting between 6 and 9 seconds, which just isn’t giving us any shape.
For a sheltered reef break like El Burro, the optimum swell direction is from the ENE, and we do see some pulses from that direction, but the wind is just ruining it. With onshore winds and that messy cross-chop, a sheltered spot can get blown out faster than a grommet’s first duck dive.
We get a couple of clean spells recorded on the 24th and 26th of July, but those come with tiny swell heights of 2 ft to 3 ft and next to no energy (only 18 to 22). Not enough to do anything with.
So, the honest truth is, there's nothing to recommend here for paddle surfing. This stretch is a proper blank run for this area, but sometimes that’s just how it goes. Forecasts can change, but right now, don’t bother waxing up for El Burro. If you’re still keen on getting wet, the setup might be more interesting for kite surfing under these conditions than for a surfboard.
That’s all from me.
Rusty.
