The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s call it like it is – we’ve got a long, dry spell ahead for Dunkirk. Nothing’s happening. For the first week, the swell charts are empty.
Starting Wednesday the 5th of August, there’s zero surf. Water temp is sitting at 75°F, which is about 3°F warmer than average for this time of year, so it’s a touch warmer than normal – nice for a dip, but no waves. Wednesday morning has light cross-offshore wind from the SW at 6 mph, but with no energy, it’s pointless. Wednesday afternoon goes glassy with a westerly 3 mph breeze, still dead flat.
Thursday the 6th stays flat. Friday the 7th, same story. Saturday the 8th of August finally coughs up a tiny 0.3ft NW windswell in the afternoon, period only 5 seconds – a pathetic 2 units of combined energy. That is barely a ripple. Sunday the 9th has a 1ft pulse from the west with a 4-second period, still only 3 units of energy. Weak. This tiny, short-period slop carries on through to Tuesday the 12th.
Then from Wednesday the 13th of August all the way through to Thursday the 20th, it goes completely flat again – no swell heights recorded at all. So you’re looking at a solid 16-day stretch of nothing worth paddling out for. Dunkirk is usually a consistent, exposed spot, but the ocean just isn’t delivering. The wind does swing offshore from the SE a couple of times (like on the 5th morning and again on the 18th), but with zero swell, that's just a clean lake.
No standout here, no best on offer. This is a blank run. Keep the board in the rack and check back later – forecasts can shift, but right now it’s a bust.
Rusty.
