The Lowdown
Alright, let me level with you. It’s a tough stretch ahead for Delray Beach. Looking at the whole 16-day window, I gotta be straight with you – there’s not a single day where the surf is worth getting excited about. The swell is tiny, rarely cracking 2 ft, and the energy is weak across the board. The water temp is sitting at 87° on the morning of the 20th, which is about 1° warmer than the average for this time of year – feels like a bath, but not much else to write home about.
We kick off Thursday morning, August 20th, with a tiny 0.7 ft easterly swell and a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is a measly 10 (weak), and there’s a light cross-shore wind. It’s poor. That sets the tone. Through Friday the 21st, Saturday the 22nd, and Sunday the 23rd, it’s more of the same – swell barely moves, winds are cross-shore or cross-onshore, and the energy stays in the low double digits. There’s a brief moment Friday morning with a light cross-offshore breeze that cleans things up, but the swell is still 0.7 ft. That’s not surf, that’s a ripple.
The whole first week is a washout. Waves stay under 2 ft, periods are short, and the energy is weak. The best you’ll see is Saturday afternoon, August 29th, where the swell nudges up to 2 ft from the southeast with a 5-second period – still weak with only 42 combined energy (moderate). But the wind is onshore, so it’s choppy and messy. Not worth paddling out.
As we roll into the first week of September, it’s the same story. Mornings are clean with light breezes, but the swell is tiny – 1.0 ft or 1 ft. The energy readings are all in the weak to moderate range, tops 30. The best chance for something remotely clean is Friday morning, September 4th, with a light cross-offshore breeze and a 1 ft southeast swell, 8-second period, and 30 combined energy. Still, it’s poor surf.
Bottom line: there’s no standout here. No day where the swell, wind, and quality come together. It’s a blank run for the area, and unfortunately, it’s normal for this time of year. If you’re desperate, maybe the kite crew could have a look when the wind is up on the 28th or 29th, but for paddle surfing? Leave the board at home. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a long wait.
