The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Straight up, this 16-day window for Deerfield Beach Pier is a tough one. We are looking at a long dry spell, honestly. There’s barely any surf to get excited about for the whole run. From now through the end of the forecast period, every single report comes back as “poor surf conditions.” The first two weeks are basically a write-off with tiny, weak swell.
We kick off on Tuesday, August 18th morning with a tiny 0.7ft of east swell at 8 seconds. The combined energy is just 8, so it’s gutless. At least the morning has a light offshore wind from the WNW at 9 mph, keeping it clean, but there’s nothing to ride. By Tuesday afternoon, it’s glassy with 1ft of southeast swell, but it's a 10-second period. Still, it’s a lake out there. Water temp is sitting at 87°, running normal for this time of year.
The pattern just keeps repeating. Wednesday the 19th morning has a clean 0.7ft east swell, 9-second period, light offshore. Wednesday afternoon gets onshore and messy. Thursday the 20th morning goes glassy with a tiny east swell, but Thursday afternoon gets a jump to 3ft from the SSE, but the period drops to a horrible 4 seconds and it’s cross-onshore. That’s junk. Energy jumps to 25, but the quality is zero.
Friday the 21st through to the end of the month is more of the same: swell heights bouncing between 0.7ft and 3ft, periods mostly short (4 to 8 seconds), and winds are almost always cross-onshore or onshore from the SE. The combined energy stays low, between 9 and 25. Not a single standout.
As we push into the first week of September, there’s finally a hint of something on the 1st and 2nd. A long-period groundswell shows up: 15-second period from the east on Tuesday, September 1st morning. But it’s only 0.7ft and cross-onshore, so still poor. The energy reads only 40. Wednesday, September 2nd morning picks up to 2ft from the ESE at 4 seconds, energy climbs to 53, but it’s onshore and short period – just messy, choppy water.
Honestly, there are zero good surf options in this 16-day window. This is a blank run, and it’s one of those stretches where the forecast isn't your friend. For this area, a stretch of flat, poor surf in late August and early September isn't that unusual. Keep your expectations in the car park. Given the small, weak swell combined with onshore wind, this setup is honestly more interesting for a kite surfer with a big kite than a paddle surfer. Hang in there; forecasts can change, but right now, it’s not looking up.
Rusty.
