The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you about Deerfield Beach Pier. We’ve got a real dry spell on our hands.
Looking at the full 16-day window, from this Sunday the 19th of July right through to Monday the 3rd of August, there’s just not a single day worth paddling out for. Every single session across the entire period is rated as poor surf conditions. The swell is tiny – never getting above 3 ft – and the period on that small bump is a super short 4 to 5 seconds for the first week, which is just wind chop. For the second week, from the 23rd of July onwards, the swell drops to a pathetic 0.7 ft to 1 ft. The combined energy is a weak 8 to 49 for the whole stretch, so there’s just no power in the water.
The water temperature at the moment is 86°F, which is about 2°F warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a little notable, but it won’t help you catch a wave.
The wind is mostly a problem too. It’s a cross-onshore or onshore breeze from the SSE, SE, or E for the vast majority of the time, making it choppy and messy. There are a few clean windows on the 26th, 27th, 28th, 29th, 30th, and 31st of July, and even a glassy moment on the 1st of August, but with wave heights of 0.7 ft to 2 ft and a period of 6 to 8 seconds, you’re looking at tiny, weak ripples. The swell direction is from the east or northeast, which is fine for the pier, but there’s just no size or energy behind it.
Honestly, this is a blank run. When the surf is this consistently flat and the wind is on it, it’s more of a kite surfing scenario than a paddle surfing one, if you’ve got the gear. Don’t hold your breath for this stretch; forecasts can change, but right now we’ve got a big fat zero for the next 16 days.
Rusty.
