Alright crew, Rusty checking in. I’ve been staring at the predictions for Crouching Lion, and I’m not gonna lie – it’s a grim outlook for the paddle-in crowd. This is an inconsistent point break that’s picky about its NE swell, and the wind is going to be our worst enemy for the whole run. From Wednesday the 19th of August all the way through to Thursday the 3rd of September, it’s cross-onshore, onshore, or just plain choppy. No clean sessions in sight.
There’s some swell building, but it’s all junk. By the 23rd of August, the waves are pushing past 5ft, and by the 29th and 30th of August they’re hitting 7ft with moderate to fresh cross-onshore winds – that’s big, ugly, expert-only chop, not a fun day out. The combined energy climbs from a moderate 324 to a strong 522 by the end of August, but it’s all wind-slop, not real groundswell. You’d be battling a lumpy, blown-out mess.
If you’re desperate, circle Thursday the 3rd of September. The morning shows a 6ft ENE swell with a 10-second period and a lighter cross-shore breeze. The energy is still a strong 674, but the description says “gentle cross-shore with slight cross-chop” – it’s the only time the forecast moves from “poor” to “marginal.” It’s not good, just the best of a bad bunch.
Forget the beginners – anything over 5ft in these winds is a washing machine. And with that steady cross-onshore wind and a beach-and-point setup, if you fly a kite, this might actually look better for you than a surfboard.
The long-range picture doesn’t get better. The first days of September have some size but the wind ruins it. The last few days (Sept 2 & 3) get a longer 10-11 second period, hinting at real groundswell, but it’s still from ENE with cross-onshore wind – that means a crumbly, sectiony wave at this spot. The water is a comfy 80°F, right on the seasonal average.
So there you have it. One marginal morning on the 3rd of September, and a whole lot of sitting on the beach. Stay patient.
Rusty.
