The Lowdown
Alright, surf is gonna be pretty grim for a while, so let's be straight with you. We're looking at a long stretch of nothing but blown-out, messy conditions at Crouching Lion. The wind is gonna be stuck in that cross-onshore groove for days, chopping up an already weak, short-period swell. It's a tough look for a spot that's already inconsistent. Don't get too amped for the first week, it's going to be a lot of closeouts and frustration.
We're starting with a real dud. Through the 20th and 21st, the swell is tiny, around 3 ft to 4 ft, with a period of just 7 seconds. That's short-period windswell, and with the cross-shore and cross-on winds, it's just gonna be a messy ripple at best. There is some weak energy, around 96 to 138, but it's not doing anything for us. It's a perfect time to do something else.
The weekend rolls in and it gets a bit bigger, but not better. Saturday, the 22nd, and Sunday, the 23rd, the swell builds to 4 ft to 6 ft, but the wind jumps up to a fresh 30 km/h cross-onshore. That’s a full-blown chop-fest. The energy is climbing, hitting 317 to 322 by Sunday, but it's all messy, lumpy, and unrideable. This is looking like more of a kite-surfing kind of session than a paddle-surfing one, with the wind and the junky swell.
The beginning of the next week, from Monday, the 24th, to Thursday, the 27th, is more of the same. We're seeing waist to chest-high, 4 ft to 5 ft, windswell. The wind eases slightly to 20-25 km/h, but it's still cross-onshore and keeping the surface bumpy. It's all pretty lackluster, with the energy ranging from 178 to 389. Nothing here is inspiring any confidence.
Now, here's where it gets interesting. Towards the end of that week, on Friday, the 28th, the swell period jumps up to 15 seconds. This is a whole different animal. A long-period groundswell finally arrives. The size is only 3 ft to 3.5 ft, but there's some serious energy behind it, with the combined energy reading 566 to 691. However, the wind is still 25 km/h cross-onshore, which is a shame. It's a tease.
This new groundswell holds through the weekend. Saturday, the 29th, still has that 14-second period, and Sunday, the 30th, it's still 13 seconds. The size remains around 3 ft, but the energy is jumping big time, hitting 650-661 on Saturday morning. Then, Sunday afternoon the bottom drops out. The swell jumps to 7 ft, the period is 13 seconds, and the energy just explodes to 1468. This is the first sign of the big one. The wind, though, is still a fresh 30 km/h cross-onshore, so it's still messy.
Monday, the 31st of August, is when it really starts to build. The swell is a solid 8 ft, with that long 12-second period, and the energy is massive at 1900 to 1966. The wind is actually starting to back off a bit, dropping to around 20 km/h. By the afternoon, it even goes cross-off. This is the standout. It's big, powerful, and while it's a lot of water for the average punter, for the experienced surfer, this is the window. At 8 ft, it's into expert territory. It's going to be a proper, heavy day at this point break. The crowd factor here is a concern, as it can get busy, and with this kind of swell, the take-off zone will be hotly contested.
That big swell peaks on Tuesday, the 1st of September. We're looking at 11 ft of ENE groundswell, with a 10-second period. The combined energy is huge, hitting 2611 in the morning. The wind is a very light 5 km/h cross-onshore, which is about as good as you could hope for. It's glassy enough. This is the biggest, and possibly the best, day of the whole run. If you're an expert, this is your day. The size and power are next level.
After that, things slowly start to fade. Wednesday, the 2nd, and Thursday, the 3rd, the swell drops back to a more manageable 6.5 ft to 7.5 ft, but the period drops too, down to 8-9 seconds. The wind is light, 10-15 km/h, but it's back to being more cross-shore. It's still a fun, punchy wave, but it's a step down from the monster day prior. The energy is still strong, running 475 to 773.
The final couple of days, Friday, the 4th, the swell drops further to 5.5 ft to 6 ft and the period is back down to a meh 7 seconds. The wind is onshore and it's looking like it's going to be a sloppy finish to the run. That epic window on Monday and Tuesday is the clear highlight. The earlier stuff is a write-off. If you can, hold out for
