The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's talk about what's on offer.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s looking pretty flat out there for a good stretch. We’ve got a real quiet spell kicking off from Tuesday the 14th all the way through to Saturday the 18th. Those first few days are basically a write-off with nothing but tiny bumps and poor conditions.
Now, there is a little pulse of energy that shows up on Saturday afternoon the 18th. It’s nothing to write home about, just some small, weak swell (71 combined energy) rolling in from the SE, with a very long period of 17 seconds. That kind of period can be a bit weird on a beach setup, as the waves might break a bit too straight, but early Sunday morning on the 19th we see the energy pick up a little more (104 combined energy) and the wind looks glassy. It’s surfable, but only just. Not a standout.
The real window of opportunity starts to build from Monday the 20th. The swell picks up from the NE, and we start seeing moderate wave energy (263 combined energy) with clean, cross-off winds. The trend continues through Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd, with chest to head-high sets around 3ft from the NE. Conditions are clean with light breezes, making for some decent sessions. It’s consistent enough to get some fun waves, but nothing massive.
The best on offer looks like it’s shaping up for Friday the 24th. Now, early Friday morning gets a bit blown out with fresh winds, but hold on – Friday afternoon is where it’s at. The wind goes glassy, and we get a solid 4ft swell from the ENE with a 12-second period and strong wave energy (385 combined energy). That’s a proper groundswell. Water temp here at Cattle Grid is about average at 57°, nothing wild. This is the pick of the week for a solid, clean session.
Then Saturday the 25th morning is also a cracker. We see very good surf conditions with the combined energy jumping up to 507, and 2.5ft swell from the ENE. The wind is a light offshore, keeping things clean. That energy reading is strong, and the swell direction (ENE) is a solid match for the optimum (NE). This is a top contender.
After that, the swell starts to back off pretty quickly from Sunday the 26th onward, fading into small, weak energy and mostly poor conditions through the end of the month.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a dud. The standout sessions are Friday the 24th afternoon and Saturday the 25th morning at Cattle Grid. That’s where you wanna be.
