The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the pipe. Things have been slow, but there’s a chance of a decent little run later on, so keep the stoke alive.
Alright, straight up, the outlook is pretty bleak for a while. We are looking at a serious run of small to tiny surf through most of the current week and into the next. Starting today, August 21st, it’s weak. The combined swell energy is really low at just 154 (weak energy) with a 1ft SSW swell but a long period of 19 seconds, and it’s got a cross-offshore wind. It’s just not happening for a proper paddle. The water temp here at Seven Mile Beach and Point is running a bit colder than normal for the time of year at 51°, about a degree and a half off the average.
Saturday the 22nd is a no-go with a strong offshore wind and a pathetic 0.3ft swell. By Sunday the 23rd morning, we see the combined energy bump to a moderate 887, but with a 3ft SSW swell and an 18-second period, it’s still cross-offshore and a bit of a wait for sets. The Sunday afternoon session is more promising with that same 3ft S swell, 16 second period, and a light cross-offshore breeze from the WNW. The energy drops back to moderate at 322, but it's clean and surfable. It’s not a standout, but it is the best looking window in the first week.
Then we hit a gap. From Monday the 24th right through to the end of August, it’s pretty much a write-off. The swell either disappears or gets messy with onshore or cross-shore winds. There’s a moment on Tuesday the 25th morning when the wind goes glassy, but with only 2ft of south swell and weak energy (98), it’s a knee-high dribble at best. The last day of the month, Monday the 31st, shows a moderate offshore in the afternoon with a 2ft S swell at 19 seconds and 247 combined energy, but it's still "ordinary" conditions.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting and promises to save the whole outlook. Tuesday, September the 1st. The morning starts clean with a 2ft S swell and 17 seconds, that’s solid and fun. The real stand-out is Tuesday afternoon. The swell jumps to a meaty 7ft from the SSW with a 16-second period, and the combined energy roars to 2505 (strong to very strong). The wind is a moderate offshore from the WNW, making for clean conditions. This is the best on offer. It’s a proper groundswell. The period is long at 16 seconds, which will give it power and shape, but at a point break like Seven Mile, it will hold up well. That size is getting into the expert-only territory at over 8ft, but for experienced surfers, that afternoon looks excellent.
After that, Wednesday the 2nd afternoon has a 3ft SSW swell, 14-second period, with good energy (516) and light offshore wind. It’s another good call for a session but doesn't hit the same heights as Tuesday. The rest of the forecast into the second week sees a return to smaller, choppier conditions with cross-off winds and a drop in energy.
So, bottom line: the first week is small and inconsistent. Don't get your hopes up until we hit that Tuesday the 1st of September. That afternoon is the one to circle on the calendar. The afternoon session on the 1st is the standout.
Rusty.
