The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, the first few days are looking pretty flat. We’ve got a bit of a wait on our hands. The first real surf worth talking about isn't until Thursday, the 16th, and even then it's a modest start.
Thursday, July 16th kicks things off with a small, long-period groundswell from the south. Seven Mile Beach and Point will see waves around 3 ft with a very long 17-second period. The wind is a cross-off from the NNW, which will keep things tidy. The water is sitting at 52°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you'll want a decent wetsuit. The combined energy is moderate (367), so there's some push behind it, but the wave heights are small. It's surfable, but not a standout.
Friday, the 17th is much the same story – similar 3 ft south swell, still a 18-second period, but the wind stays in a cross-off direction. It's a repeat of Thursday, really. The energy is still moderate (395).
After that, we hit a long, flat spell. From Saturday, July 18th right through to Wednesday, July 22nd, the swell drops right off. We're looking at tiny 0.7 ft to 1 ft waves with weak energy levels (mostly below 100). There's literally nothing to get excited about for nearly a week.
Things start to look a bit more interesting around Thursday, July 23rd. A new south swell fills in, hitting 2 ft with a 14-second period. The energy picks up a bit (138). The real highlight of this period, though, is Friday, July 24th. The morning starts with a fresh 19 mph offshore wind from the WSW, cleaning up a 3 ft south swell (17 seconds). The afternoon gets even better: the swell bumps up to 3 ft, still from the south, with a solid 17-second period, and the wind stays offshore. The combined energy jumps to a strong 573. This is the best looking day of the first week. The waves will be well-shaped with that groundswell, and the offshore wind will have them peeling nicely. Keep in mind, with that long period, it might be a bit straight at the beach, but Seven Mile is a point break, so it should handle it well.
Saturday, July 25th still has some fun waves, 3 ft in the morning with a cross-off, and 2 ft in the afternoon with a gentle offshore.
Then we get another quiet stretch from Sunday, July 26th through to Wednesday, July 30th. The swell drops back to 1.0 ft or less, with weak energy. It's a blank run.
The real standout, and the one to circle on your calendar, is Friday, July 31st. The morning sees a moderate 2 ft south swell, but the wind is a clean offshore from the west. The afternoon, though, is where it's at. A solid 5 ft SSW swell rolls in with a very long 18-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 1380 – that's strong wave energy. The wind is a moderate offshore from the west. This is going to be excellent for experienced surfers. The waves will have serious power and length to them. For a point break like Seven Mile, this is a proper session. The crowds will likely be there, so get in early.
Rusty.
