The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, it’s a slow start. The first few days are a bit of a write-off. We’re looking at tiny, ankle-to-knee-high leftovers from the south at Seven Mile Beach and Point, with swell under 1 ft and weak energy readings (54). The water is sitting at 52°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll need a decent rubber. The wind is a light cross-off, which keeps the surface clean, but there’s just not enough push for a proper ride.

Monday and Tuesday are pretty much the same story – a bit of S/SSW swell up to 1.0 ft, and periods over 14 seconds, which means long lulls between tiny sets. The energy is very low (35–51). The water temp anomaly is only noted for the first record, so we can assume it’s staying a bit chilly.

Then things start to change. Wednesday afternoon the 22nd sees a real shift: a light offshore wind from the WSW kicks in, and while the swell is still only 1.0 ft, the conditions are clean. By Thursday the 23rd, we get a solid westerly breeze pushing in proper offshore wind. The swell picks up to 2 ft, and the energy jumps to 129. Thursday afternoon is actually the first real standout: a 2 ft south swell with a very long period of 18 seconds, and the energy hits 273. The wind is a moderate offshore, so the waves will be clean and lined up. This is a sweet spot for a point break like this – long period groundswell wrapping in, and the offshore wind grooming it. It’s not huge, but the quality is there.

Friday the 24th is the next big moment. Morning swell hits 4 ft from the south, with a fresh offshore wind and energy pumping at 590. By Friday afternoon, the swell jumps to 6 ft from the SSW, period 15 seconds, and energy goes through the roof at 1292. That’s solid, powerful surf. The wind is a fresh offshore, so it’s going to be clean and punchy. However, at 6 ft, this is getting into intermediate-to-advanced territory – beginners might find it a bit much. The long period will make it wall up nicely at the point, but expect some hefty sets.

The weekend after that (25th and 26th) drops off a bit. The swell fades back to 1–2 ft, and the wind swings cross-off, so it’s clean but small. Sunday the 26th afternoon has a strong offshore wind (28 mph) and a 4 ft swell, but that wind is howling, making it hard to paddle into. The energy is 382, but it’s a battle.

Now, look ahead to Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th. Monday afternoon sees a 5 ft south swell with a 16-second period and energy of 977 – that’s a lot of water moving around. The wind is cross-off, so it’s clean. But Tuesday the 28th is the real highlight of the second week. Tuesday morning brings a 4 ft south swell, period 14 seconds, with a light breeze from the NNW. Energy is 518. Tuesday afternoon holds at 3 ft with a 12-second period. The wind is light and cross-off. This is going to be the most user-friendly day of the whole run – clean, waist-to-chest high waves, with good shape and not too much wind. This is the one to circle for a session.

The last few days of the forecast (29th July to 3rd August) are a mixed bag. There’s a bit of bump from the SSE on the 29th, and Wednesday afternoon the 29th has a 2 ft swell and a moderate offshore, but it’s ordinary. The 30th and 31st are tiny again. The 2nd of August brings a 3 ft SSE swell with a moderate offshore, but it’s not a standout. The 3rd of August has a long-period 20-second swell from the south, but it’s cross-shore and messy, with cross-chop.

Best on offer: Thursday afternoon the 23rd for a clean, long-period south swell with glassy offshore wind, and Tuesday the 28th for the best all-round conditions with light winds and a solid 4 ft swell. Friday the 24th afternoon is the biggest, but it’s for the crew who want a challenge.

Stay safe, and don’t bother paddling out until the 23rd.

Rusty.
