The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at the forecast… Seven Mile Beach and Point. It’s a point break, intermediate territory, and it’s inconsistent. Right now, we’ve got a long stretch of flat, nothing happening. The water’s sitting at 51°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a thick hood.
The first sniff of anything worth paddling out for doesn’t show up until Saturday the 22nd. That morning, we’ve got a clean 2ft south swell, period sitting at 17 seconds – that’s proper groundswell, and it’s got some energy behind it (283). The wind is offshore out of the west at 16 mph, so it’ll be clean. That afternoon, the swell bumps up to 3ft, still south, period 16 seconds, and the wave energy climbs to 432. The wind stays offshore from the west at 12 mph. This is the standout window. The wave direction is south, and the optimum for this spot is south, so it’s a good match. It’s a point break, so that long period swell will wrap in nicely. For beginners, though, the swell’s only 3ft, so it’s fine. The spot is inconsistent, so this little pulse is a treat.
After that, Sunday the 23rd drops off quickly. Morning sees 2ft south swell, 13 seconds, with clean conditions but nothing special. The afternoon is similar, offshore wind, but it’s ordinary.
Monday the 24th is weak, 1ft, and the energy is low (67-76). Clean but barely rideable.
Tuesday the 25th gets a messy little bump of 3ft south-southwest swell, but the period is a short 7 seconds, and the wind is cross-shore from the south-southeast at 16 mph, making it choppy. Not worth it.
Then we go into another flat spell right through to Saturday the 29th, with nothing but tiny, messy waves.
Sunday the 30th sees a big spike in energy (959-1145) but the swell is 3ft to 3ft south, with a very long period of 17-18 seconds. The wind is cross-on and strong, making it a messy, blown-out mess. The energy is way up, but the conditions are poor.
Monday the 31st is for experts only. The swell jumps to 8ft from the southeast, period 9 seconds, with a fresh cross-offshore breeze. The energy is 987. That’s a big, powerful wave, but it’s a beach and point setup, so with that shorter period and heavy wind, it might be more of a kite day than a paddle day. The afternoon drops to 4ft, but the wind is a strong offshore at 28 mph – clean but hard to paddle into.
The beginning of September has a couple of mellow days with 2ft and 1.0ft, offshore winds, but nothing to get excited about.
Right, so the clear standout is Saturday the 22nd. That’s your best chance for a proper session. The rest is a waiting game.
