The Lowdown

G’day, it’s Rusty. We’ve got a tricky 16-day window ahead for The Wedge (Tasmania). The water’s sitting at about 52°F, which is about normal for this time of year, so grab the thick rubber.

The first few days are a write-off. Tuesday the 4th through Thursday the 6th are all small, weak, and messy. Swell energy is weak (134), and the waves are tiny with poor conditions. You’ll be straining to get a ride. The blooper reel starts Friday the 7th morning – a clean 2ft SSW swell from a decent direction with light cross-off wind. The energy is moderate (353) and it’s clean, so you could get a few fun ones. Saturday the 8th is the first real standout: morning offshore wind with 3ft SSW swell (464 energy) and clean 3ft again in the afternoon. That’s a solid session for the weekend.

Sunday the 9th is a write-off again – small and choppy. But Monday the 10th morning is glassy with 3ft SSW swell and strong energy (611) – that’s a beauty of a session. The rest of the week is average until Wednesday the 12th morning, when the swell jumps to 5ft SSW (1280 energy), but it’s a bit full and the wind is fresh. That’s getting big for the break.

Thursday the 13th morning is huge – 10ft SSW swell (4636 energy) – but it’s too big for The Wedge, experts only. Friday the 14th is even bigger, with a massive 18ft SSW swell (33039 energy) – insane energy, but it’s way too big for safe surfing here. Keep an eye on Saturday the 16th: Sunday morning the 16th offers clean 5ft SSW (684 energy) with light cross-off, and Sunday afternoon is 8ft SW (2796 energy) – excellent for experienced surfers. Monday the 17th is glassy and clean with 2ft SSW (273 energy), a nice finisher.

The standout is Saturday the 8th – clean, consistent 3ft SSW swell, light offshore wind, and moderate energy. That’s your best bet. Monday the 10th morning is a close second with glassy conditions. The huge swell from the 13th to 15th is only for the brave. The Wedge is inconsistent and rarely breaks, so when it’s on, make the most of it.

Rusty.
