The Lowdown

Hey, it’s Rusty. We’ve got a solid run of surf coming up at Roaring Beach, but it’s one for the experienced crew, not beginners. The first few days are the real standout here, with a big, long-period SSW groundswell rolling in and clean conditions. The water’s sitting at 54° – about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

Right off the bat, Thursday morning the 16th, Roaring Beach (Tasmania) is firing. You’re looking at a strong 8ft SSW swell with a very long 16-second period, and the combined wave energy is pumping at 3102. Winds are light cross-off from the NNW, keeping it clean. This is excellent surf for those who know what they’re doing. Thursday arvo gets even better – the wind drops to a dead glassy 3 mph, swell drops slightly to 8ft but still at 15 seconds, and energy sits at 2329. That’s the pick of the period, glassy, powerful, and lined up.

Friday the 17th holds strong too. Morning sees 8ft SSW swell, 17-second period, 3517 energy, with a 12 mph cross-off breeze keeping it clean. The afternoon backs off a touch to 7ft but stays clean with light cross-off wind. Still excellent for experienced surfers.

Saturday the 18th is still solid but dropping – 6ft in the morning, then 5ft arvo, both clean but the period shortens. Worth a paddle if you’re keen. Sunday the 19th is smaller again at about 4ft, still rideable but not pumping. By Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st, we hit a flat spell – only 2ft to 3ft, weak energy in the 200-300 range. Tuesday arvo however, the wind goes glassy and we get a little 4ft SW pulse with a 14-second period and 657 energy – a sneaky clean session if you’re desperate.

Wednesday the 22nd is a repeat of small but clean 4ft SW swell. Then Thursday the 23rd, things get wild. A 13ft SW swell rolls in with 7964 energy, but the wind switches to a strong cross-on from the SW at 12 mph, making it messy and too big for most. Thursday arvo is still big at 8ft but with a 19 mph cross-wind chopping it up. Friday the 24th is a write-off – 10ft to 15ft, howling 25 mph cross-onshore winds, energy over 13000, just dangerous and ugly. That setup would be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

From Saturday the 25th through to Monday the 27th, we get a slow drop: 8ft down to 4ft, mostly cross-off winds, but the quality is only marginal. Tuesday the 28th morning has a brief moment with 19 mph offshore wind from the NNE and a 7ft SW swell, but the period is a short 6 seconds – weak and crumbly. That arvo it’s back to messy onshore.

Wednesday the 29th is worth a look – glassy morning winds, 6ft S swell with a 10-second period and 729 energy. Clean and fun for experienced surfers. The rest of the run into the end of July is just big, windy, and poor – 8ft to 15ft with strong onshore winds. Not one for the casual surfer.

Rusty.
