Alright, this is Rusty.
Let’s talk about Carmel Beach. Honestly, the next week and a half isn't looking like much to get excited about. We've got a long stretch of poor to marginal conditions with persistent cross-onshore wind, which is gonna keep things messy.
The trouble starts right away today, Tuesday, the 7th. There’s some long-period groundswell in the water, a 3ft SSW swell with a 19-second period, but the wind is howling from the NW at 12-16 mph, crossing right onto the face. The combined energy is moderate at 1031, but the chop is ruining it. That same setup keeps going through the 8th with a bit less size.
Wednesday the 9th brings a bump in swell height up to 6ft, but again it's a short-period, wind-driven NW swell, and the same cross-onshore breeze makes a mess of it. By Friday the 11th and Saturday the 12th, conditions are so-so, just marginal. Nothing clean. This pattern of moderate cross-onshore winds and moderate energy (around 564-654) drags out through the middle of the month. Tuesday the 16th is a write-off with 16 mph NW winds.
Honestly, the only flicker of something interesting might be on Saturday the 18th. We see the combined swell energy jump up to a strong 1480, with a 7ft WNW swell coming in. The wind is lighter, only 6 mph from the NW, which is still cross-on, but lighter. Then by Saturday afternoon, the wind actually switches to onshore from the west at 9 mph. That’s still not glassy, but it’s the best wind condition we see all period.
That 7ft is getting up there, getting a bit big for beginners, but might offer something for the more experienced crew on a longer board. The swell direction is a little west of north-west, so it’ll hit the beach. It’s not a classic stand-out, just the least worst option in a long, poor run.
Given the persistent cross-onshore wind and the beach break setup, honestly, this stretch looks more interesting for someone with a kite than a paddle. The winds and waves are there for that kind of fun, just not for clean surf.
As for the water temp, it’s unseasonably warm, about average for the time of year, so maybe you can wear a shorty if you're tough enough to paddle into that chop.
Stay patient. Forecasts can change.
