The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking over the next couple of weeks at Bronte Reef or Bunnies (a reef setup).

The next few days are pretty grim, so don’t even bother paddling out until Monday morning, the 20th of July. That’s where things start to turn. We’ve got a clean, 5 ft swell rolling in from the ENE with a 10-second period and a light offshore wind from the WNW. The combined wave energy is moderate (687), and it’s looking like a real fun morning if you can get out there. Beginners should be fine—it’s not too big, and the reef handles that direction well. The water’s sitting at 62°, which is a bit colder than usual for this time of year, so a good wetsuit is the go.

Tuesday morning the 21st is also worth a look. A clean 4 ft ENE swell with a light cross-offshore breeze from the NW. Combined energy is down a bit (369), but it’ll still be surfable and clean. Crowds can show up here sometimes, so keep that in mind.

Now, Wednesday afternoon the 22nd is a little gem: glassy conditions with a light 3 ft ENE swell (9-second period). Combined energy is 289—nothing massive, but with clean conditions and no wind, the reef will be working nicely.

Thursday the 23rd afternoon is a big one, but it’s a warning: that swell is predicted to be too big for this break. A 10 ft southerly swell with a 9-second period and a massive combined energy of 1368. That’s for experts only, and even then, it might be a handful. The wind is a fresh cross-shore, so it’s not ideal.

Friday morning the 24th is a solid pick: clean, 6 ft swell from the south with a 10-second period (725 combined energy), light offshore wind from the west. This is the standout of the first week. Great shape, good power, and clean conditions. If you’re experienced, that’s your window.

After that, the surf drops off and the wind turns messy for a stretch. Sunday the 26th morning is clean enough, but it’s small (5 ft from the south). From Tuesday the 28th through to the 31st of July, it’s mostly poor surf with strong winds and chop. There’s a real gap in quality here.

Heading into August, Saturday the 1st offers a bit of hope: a clean 6 ft southeasterly swell (201 combined energy) with a cross-offshore breeze, but that afternoon it gets too big again (12 ft from the east—too much for this break). Sunday the 2nd is where the best long-range call sits: a clean 6 ft swell from the ESE with a 10-second period and light offshore wind. Combined energy is 905, so it’s got some power. That’s a promising session, but we’re still a week and a half out, so keep an eye on it.

All in all, Monday the 20th and Friday the 24th are the two standout mornings. Get in before the crowds and enjoy it while it’s clean.

Rusty.
