The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the surf at Benijo in Tenerife. The first stretch is a total dud, but if you’ve got patience, there’s a couple of real gems coming.

From Wednesday the 9th through Sunday the 13th, it’s all chop and cross-shore wind. The swell is short-period and messy, with moderate energy readings (190 to 524). The wind is never on your side – it’s cross-on or cross, and the waves are poor. Don’t bother paddling out.

Come Monday the 14th, we get a clean break. Morning brings an offshore SSE wind at 15 km/h, with a 0.8m swell from the NNW. The period is 13 seconds – that’s long-period groundswell with real punch. The energy is strong (379). The afternoon turns glassy with a light SW breeze. This is the first standout. The water is a touch warmer than average at 25°, so it’s comfortable. Benijo is a reef break that’s fairly consistent, and crowds are sometimes around, but a Monday morning should be quiet.

Tuesday the 15th is still rideable in the morning with a clean 0.7m NNW swell, but the energy drops (184). It’s just okay. The rest of that week stays small and choppy, with the north wind picking up again.

Now, here’s the big one. Monday the 21st sees a solid 2.1m NE swell building, with a clean cross-offshore breeze. The energy climbs to 639. The wind stays clean. Tuesday the 22nd is the best in the whole forecast. Morning brings a 2.4m NE swell, 8-second period, and a light offshore wind from the ESE at 5 km/h. The combined energy is 1014 – that’s strong. The waves are clean, the reef will be firing. This is expert-only territory – 2.4m on a reef is serious. The afternoon stays clean with a light cross-shore. That Tuesday morning is the one to circle.

After that, the swell drops and the wind turns onshore, so don’t miss that window.

That’s the picture from here.

Rusty.
