The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with the lowdown.
I gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window for Baldwin Beach Park is a tough one. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor surf conditions, with a solid gap of nothing worth paddling out for. The first week is basically a write-off, and the second week only offers a few glimmers that are still pretty marginal.
The first real chance of anything resembling a surf comes on Thursday, July 23rd. The swell is up to 5ft from the ENE, with a long 11-second period – that's real groundswell energy. The combined energy is a solid 531 (moderate), but the wind is a cross-shore breeze from the E at 12 mph. It’s enough to mess with the surface, creating a cross-chop. It’s flagged as marginal, so it’s not a day to get excited about.
The pattern continues through the end of July. There’s a pulse of bigger swell building around Saturday, July 25th, with 6ft to 6ft from the ENE, but the wind stays cross-shore. The energy is ramping up (555 on Saturday morning), but the quality is still poor. The real tease is Sunday, July 26th. We get a massive 4ft to 5ft swell from the E, but the period is a whopping 16 to 17 seconds – that’s a very long-period groundswell. The combined energy is through the roof (1488 to 1561), but the wind is cross-on from the ENE, making it choppy. For a reef and point set-up like this (Maui), that long period could actually be a blessing, but the onshore wind kills it.
The best of a bad bunch looks like Monday, July 27th. The swell stays at 6ft to 7ft from the E, still with a long 16-second period. The combined energy is pumping (2188 to 2391), and the wind drops to a gentle breeze from the NE at 9 mph. It’s still cross-on, but the lighter wind means it’s only "fairly choppy" instead of a full-on mess. It’s still marginal, but if you’re desperate, that’s your window. The water is 79°F – about average for the time of year, nice and warm.
After that, the swell drops off and the wind stays annoying. Tuesday, July 28th has similar 6ft to 7ft energy from the E, but that period drops to 14 seconds, and the quality is still just marginal. The last few days of July and into August see the swell fade to 4ft to 5ft, and then it’s back to small, weak junk.
Honestly, if you’re a kite surfer, the constant cross and cross-on winds might look interesting, but for a paddle surfer, this is a long blank run. It’s normal for the area to have these quiet spells, so don’t stress. Forecasts can change.
Rusty.
