The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and messy for the most part. We've got a long stretch of poor conditions ahead, but there's a tiny flicker of hope right at the end of the forecast window.
Right now, and for the next week and a half, Baldwin Beach Park is a no-go. The swell is tiny, mostly around 3ft to 5ft, and it's coming from the ENE with a short, weak period of 6 to 8 seconds. That's not enough to push any real shape. The wind is a constant cross-shore from the east, blowing at 12 to 15 mph, which is just chopping everything up. The wave energy is moderate at best, but it's all poor surf quality. Even the bigger bump on Saturday the 26th of July, with 5ft swell, is still a messy cross-shore chop. Nothing to get excited about.
Now, fast forward to the second week. On Monday the 27th of July, things get a little weird. The morning shows a small 3ft swell but with a long period of 14 seconds, and the combined energy jumps up. That's moderate to strong energy, but it's a long-period groundswell, which can be tricky at a beach break – it might break too straight. The wind is still cross-shore, so it's not clean. It's a marginal call at best.
Then, on Tuesday the 28th of July, we might have the best, or maybe the only, window. The morning brings a 5ft swell from the ENE with a period of 13 seconds and strong energy. That's a proper groundswell with some punch. The wind is still cross-shore, but the energy is there. For a reef and point setup, a long-period swell like this can actually produce some nice lined-up waves. If you're an experienced surfer and you get lucky with the tide, it could be a standout. But it's a long way out, so don't bank on it. The afternoon turns choppy again.
So, here's the bottom line: a long, dry spell until the 28th of July. That Tuesday morning is our only real hope, and it's a long-shot. For beginners, it's too small and messy most of the time, and when the energy picks up, it's got a bit of punch. For everyone else, it's a waiting game.
Rusty, signing off.
