The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty comin' at ya from right here. Gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half looks pretty grim around Baldwin Beach Park. The energy's there, but the winds are just not cooperating, so we're in a bit of a holding pattern. Hang tight though, because there's a flicker of hope way down the line.
Right now, from Monday the 17th right through the end of the month, it's a tough watch. The trade winds are hammering us from the east and east-northeast, clocking in at 15 to 25 km/h, and it's just cross-shore or cross-onshore all day long. That means every bump of swell we get is chopped up and messy. Swell heights bounce between 2 ft and 5 ft, but it's weak, crumbly stuff (combined energy sitting between 69 and 350). Poor surf conditions is the name of the game, and the scores reflect it. There's no standout session in this first stretch.
We do get a pulse of size later on. By Tuesday the 25th, the swell pushes up to 6 ft with combined energy jumping to 451, but that cross-shore wind just won't let go, so it stays poor. Same story on Wednesday the 26th – we see 7 ft and energy of 513, but the model barely gives it a nod, calling it marginal at best.
Now, the one date that's got my ears pricked is Thursday the 27th of August. That morning we're looking at an 8 ft swell from the east with a period of 11 seconds, and the combined energy absolutely roars to life at 1738. Then Thursday afternoon it jumps to a 10 ft swell from the east, period stretching to 12 seconds, and energy hitting a massive 2482. That's real groundswell energy, folks. The caveat? It's still cross-shore from the ENE at 20 km/h, which will put a bit of a chop on it. But that size and period, with the swell wrapping in from the east at Baldwin (a reef and point break that loves an NNE groundswell), could produce some powerful, heaving walls. This is expert territory at over 8 ft, so leave the foamies at home. The crowd factor is a concern though – this spot is 'often' busy, and with a pulse like that, expect it to be packed. It's the only real highlight on the whole board, and it's promising but a little uncertain that far out. We also get another push of 10 ft on Friday the 28th, but again, that cross-shore wind is the story.
After that, it drops off fast, with the swell fading back into the marginal zone through the 31st and into September. So, if you're waiting for a window, Thursday the 27th is your play. It's not perfect, but it's the best we've got.
Stay patient, keep your eye on the horizon, and if you're not an expert, maybe sit this one out.
