The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk Baldwin Beach Park on the North Shore of Oahu. It’s a reef and point that’s super consistent and good for beginners when it’s small. Water temp is about normal for this time of year.
We’ve got a long stretch of nothing good from July 16th through the 21st. The swell is there, but the wind is crap—east and east-northeast, mostly cross-shore or cross-onshore, blowing at 12-15 mph. The waves are small, 2-4 ft, with short periods of 6-8 seconds, making it weak and choppy. The combined energy is low at first, like 82 (weak) on the 16th morning, getting to moderate 322 on the 18th afternoon, but it’s still messy. On the 21st we get a longer period (14 seconds) and energy up to 395 (moderate), but it’s raining and the wind is still cross-shore.
Things start to look up on the 22nd of July. That afternoon, we see a 5 ft swell from the ENE with a 13-second period and a combined energy of 615 (moderate). The wave comment says “marginal,” which is better than the total poor we’ve been seeing. The wind is still cross-shore, so not clean, but there’s a little more push.
The standout is later, from the 25th of July. On the 25th morning, we get a 3 ft swell from the east with a very long period of 16 seconds and a combined energy of 636 (moderate). That’s a groundswell, and at Baldwin (a reef and point), that long period should wrap in nice, giving better shape but longer waits between sets. The wind is cross-shore from the east at 12 mph, so it’s a bit choppy, but it’s marginal. That afternoon, the energy hits 841 (moderate), but the wind turns cross-onshore and gets choppier, so stick to the morning.
The best day is the 28th of July. Tuesday morning and afternoon both show a 6 ft swell from the east-northeast with a 13-second period. The combined energy is strong at 1042. The wind is a gentle cross-onshore from the northeast at 9 mph, the lightest we’ve seen, making it fairly clean. This is the biggest swell in the window, and at over 5 ft, it’s for experts only. The 29th of July morning has a similar 6 ft swell from the northeast, but the period drops to 11 seconds and the energy to 698, with a gentle cross-shore wind, so it’s a decent backup.
Bottom line: if you’re paddling out, aim for the 28th. The 25th morning is a promising long-period swell, but it’s a week out and less certain. The first week is a wash, so don’t bother. This spot is consistent, so it won’t stay bad for long, but we’re in a rough patch for now.
