The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk Baldwin Beach Park, that reef and point spot on the North Shore. Water temp is 79°F, right around the norm for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
First week? Don’t bother. From Saturday July 18th through to Saturday July 25th, it’s all cross-shore or cross-onshore winds from the ENE at 12-16 mph, and the swell is tiny and weak. Wave heights bounce between 4 ft and 6 ft, but the period is short—7 to 8 seconds—so it’s just windswill. The combined energy sits between 177 and 449 (light to moderate), and the forecast keeps calling it “poor surf conditions.” Not worth paddling out.
Then Sunday July 26th, things change. Morning swell is 4 ft, but the period jumps to 16 seconds—that’s a long, deep groundswell. Energy hits 1130 (strong). The wind is still cross-shore from the ENE at 12 mph, but the wave comment improves to “marginal.” That long period works well on a reef and point like Baldwin, even though the swell direction is E, not its ideal NNE. Afternoon gets a bit bigger at 5 ft and 1343 energy, but the wind turns cross-on, making it choppy. Sunday morning is the best of the whole 16 days.
Monday July 27th holds 1.5m (5 ft) swell at 14 seconds with energy around 1177-1123, but the wind is cross-on from the ENE at 9 mph, so it’s a bit bumpy. Still surfable, but not clean.
After that, it fades fast. From Tuesday July 28th through Sunday August 2nd, the swell drops, period shortens, and energy slides back into the 200-800 range. Winds stay cross or cross-on, and the forecast keeps saying “poor.” There’s a tiny blip on Friday July 31st with 5 ft NE swell at 10 seconds and 565 energy, but it’s only marginal with the wind up.
So, the standout? Sunday July 26th morning. That 4 ft E groundswell at 16 seconds, with moderate energy (1130) and only a cross-shore wind, is the only real window. Monday morning the 27th is a backup if you’re keen. Baldwin is usually very consistent, so this dry spell is a bit of a bummer, but forecasts can always shift.
