The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's on the table for Baldwin Beach Park.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is a tough stretch. We’re looking at a pretty barren run from Wednesday, August 19th, all the way through to Sunday, August 30th, with hardly a redeeming wave in sight. The wind is mostly cross or cross-onshore, the swell is a mixed bag of short-period, weak energy, and it’s just messy. The combined energy is mostly in the weak to moderate range (a low of 110 up to 463), but it’s paired with chop and lumpy conditions that make it feel like a wrestling match. Not worth paddling out for.
The first real glimmer of hope doesn't show up until Monday, August 31st. The new week starts to stir something up. Monday morning brings a 7ft swell from ENE with a period of 8 seconds, and the energy jumps to 688 – the first sign of life. The real kicker, though, is Monday afternoon. We see an 8ft swell from ENE with a period of 14 seconds. That’s a long period groundswell, and the energy reading hits a massive 2257. That’s strong to very strong. Now, an 8ft wave is getting solid, and on a beach-and-reef break like Baldwin, that deep, long-period energy can sometimes make things a bit straight and walled up. It’s not a beginner wave – that’s for the experienced crew.
The standout, and I mean the only true standout, is Wednesday, September 2nd. The wind goes completely glassy in the morning at 0 mph, and the swell is a solid 8ft from ENE at 9 seconds. The energy is still pumping at 829 (moderate to strong). The forecast says "expect very good surf conditions" and the water is glassy. That’s about as clean as it gets. The afternoon stays clean with a light cross-offshore breeze. If you are an experienced surfer, that Wednesday morning session is the window you wait for. The water temp is a nice 80°F, which is just about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
After that, the swell hangs around but the wind picks back up from the east on Thursday, September 3rd, turning it messy again. So, the long story short: the first 12 days are a write-off, but that Monday afternoon, August 31st, through Wednesday, September 2nd, has some real juice. The best of the best is that glassy Wednesday morning. It’s a long way out, so keep an eye on it, but it has the potential to be a special session.
Rusty.
