The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. The next couple of weeks around Baldwin Beach Park are looking pretty ordinary. We've got a solid window of surf on the horizon, but you're gonna have to wade through a lot of nothing to get there.
Right now, and for the first many days, it’s all about cross-shore winds, chop, and weak energy. The swell is small, generally under 5 feet, with periods of only 7-8 seconds, so it's short and crumbly. The energy is weak, with the combined totals mostly in the low-to-mid 100s and 200s. That’s not surf, that’s just a bumpy ocean. We’re looking at a long, flat-ish stretch from the 17th through to about the 25th. You’re better off finding something else to do than paddling out into that mess.
The first real blip of something bigger shows up on the 23rd and 24th, with the swell starting to push towards 5 feet, but the wind is still cross, and it’s delivering that lumpy chop. The energy is starting to build into the 400s and 500s, but it’s not clean. Still, not worth your time.
Things get interesting around the 26th and 27th. The swell picks up to 7 to 8 feet, and we start seeing some more power, with energy values into the 700s and 800s. The direction is from the ENE, which is fine for this spot. But it's still got that cross-shore wind, so it’s going to be a bit messy.
Then, on the 28th of August, we finally get something to talk about. That Friday morning is the standout. The swell jumps to a solid 10 feet from the E, with a 10-second period. This is the real deal. The combined energy is at a strong 1580. That’s proper wave energy. The afternoon before backs off a bit to 8 feet, but still has that same punch. It's going to be big, powerful, and likely challenging. At that size, it’s strictly for experienced surfers. This is the one you want to be aiming for, but remember it’s still over a week away, so treat it as promising, not a guarantee.
After that pulse, it starts to fade again quickly. By the 29th, it’s back to 8 feet with energy in the 600s, and the wind is still cross. It’ll be lumpy, and the quality is just not there.
For the rest of the run, from the 30th on, it’s a steady drop back to the small, choppy stuff we started with. The energy drops back to the 300s, 100s, and we’re left with weak 3 foot waves and a fresh breeze. Not a great way to end the outlook.
One thing to mention about Baldwin Beach Park: it's a reef and point setup that's very consistent. It gets exposed to the ENE swell, which is a good sign. But it is a beginner-friendly break normally, and with the water temp at 80°F, which is about average for this time of year, it’s warm water at least. Keep in mind that with the bigger swell forecast, the break might turn more challenging.
Overall, the only true blue day in this whole stretch is that Friday, August 28th. Even then, you're rolling the dice on the wind. For the rest of it, this is looking like a kite-surfing kind of fortnight more than a paddle-surfing one. The surf will come back, it always does.
Rusty.
