The Lowdown
Alright, let me take a look at what we’ve got here. To be honest, for a solid stretch ahead, things are looking pretty tough. The wind is relentless, and the swell is just not lining up right for a good paddle. We’ve only got one spot on the cards, and it’s a long wait for anything even close to decent.
Our only option is Baldwin Beach Park, a reef and point break that’s exposed and picks up swell from the NNE direction. It’s beginner-friendly and very consistent, but that doesn’t mean much when the conditions are as poor as they are.
For the next week or so, from Sunday the 23rd of August right through to the end of the month, it’s a write-off. We’ve got a persistent easterly wind blowing 15 to 19 mph, creating messy cross-shore conditions. The swell is hanging around 4 ft to 6 ft, but it’s short-period windswell from the east or ENE, with periods between 6 and 9 seconds, and the combined wave energy is only moderate, ranging from about 161 to 447. Water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing wild there. The whole thing is just a lumpy, choppy mess. Definitely not one for the quiver.
There’s a bit of a flicker around Tuesday the 1st of September. The swell bumps up to 6 ft from the ENE with a period of 8-9 seconds, and the wind drops to a light breeze at 6 mph, but it’s still cross-onshore. The wave energy gets up to 526 – that’s a moderate, solid push – but the conditions are only called “marginal.” It’s not the good stuff, but if you’re desperate and a local, it might be worth a paddle.
But the real standout, the one to circle, is Sunday the 6th of September. Now we’re talking. On Sunday morning, we’ve got a clean 5 ft swell from the ENE, a period of 10 seconds (decent groundswell energy), and the wind swings light offshore from the south at 6 mph. The wave energy is 433 – moderate – but the conditions are clean. The afternoon keeps it clean, too, with a gentle cross-offshore breeze from the SE and a 5 ft swell. This is the best of the whole outlook. For a point and reef setup like Baldwin, a 10-second period works nicely, and with offshore wind, it’ll be clean and glassy. Just heads up, it’s a break that can get crowded, and Sunday is a prime day, so expect company.
Monday the 7th is a step back, with the easterly wind picking back up to 16 mph and cross-shore conditions returning.
So, to keep it real: it’s a long, grim wait until Sunday the 6th of September. That’s your window. Everything before that is blown out or side-shore chop. It’s not a classic blank run for this area, but it’s a frustrating one. Forecasts can change, though, so don’t give up hope just yet.
