The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Baldwin Beach Park over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the first week or so is a bit of a write-off. We’ve got a very long stretch from now right through until the end of next week where the conditions are just poor. Wind is mostly cross or cross-on, and there’s a chop on the water that’s gonna frustrate you more than it’ll reward you. The combo of moderate breezes and messy wave faces means you’re better off saving your energy.
Our first real glimmer of hope pops up on the 27th of August, Thursday morning. The swell pushes up to 6ft from the ENE with a period building to 9 seconds. The combined energy is moderate but climbing, hitting a score of 618. The wind is a moderate cross-shore, so it’s still got some texture to it, but this is where things start to look more interesting. By Thursday afternoon, it’s 7ft from the same direction, with a 10-second period and energy jumping to 825. You’ve got a bit of rain shower action, but don’t let that put you off – it’s the first sign of a proper pulse.
Now here’s where I get my hopes up. On Friday the 28th of August, we’re talking about the standout of the whole forecast. Morning session sees 10ft from the ENE with a 10-second period – that’s a solid wall of water, and the energy is strong at 1676. This is getting into expert territory size-wise, but if you’ve got the chops, the cross wind keeps it from being totally glassy. The afternoon gets even more interesting: same 10ft height, but the period stretches to a very long 12 seconds and the energy rockets up to 2574. That is a serious groundswell. The downside? The wind turns cross-on, making it a bit lumpy. Still, for the experienced crew, that’s the day to circle on the calendar.
Saturday the 29th holds onto the pulse with 8ft and an 11-second period in the morning, energy still strong at 1392, and a cross wind. It’s still big, still powerful, and the reef-and-point setup here should handle that long-period energy alright.
After that, it fades back to the 5ft to 7ft range and the conditions get marginal again. The 31st of August Monday brings a last little kick with 7ft and an 11-second period in the afternoon, but it’s cross-on and choppy.
So, the best bet: Friday 28th of August, especially the afternoon if the bump doesn’t bother you, or the Saturday 29th morning before it backs off. Baldwin Beach Park is a reef and point break, so it’s exposed to that swell and can handle the longer intervals better than a beach break. The water temperature is sitting at 80°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there. The crowds can be a factor here – it’s *often* busy, so get out there early.
If the big stuff on Friday and Saturday puts you off, the 27th Thursday is your gentle entry point. Either way, the end of next week is where it’s at.
Stay safe out there.
Rusty.
