The Lowdown
Grab your board, but don't get too excited just yet. We're looking at Baldwin Beach Park, and honestly, it's a rough stretch ahead. The first week is a write-off—gutless cross-shore wind from the ENE and E, blowing straight across the break, chopping everything up. The swell is tiny, mostly around 4 ft to 5 ft, but with a short, weak period of just 7-8 seconds, there's no push to it. The combined energy is weak, only around 200-300 (248), and it's labelled "poor surf conditions" right through Saturday, July 19th. You'd be better off staying on the sand.
Then we hit a real tease. On Wednesday, July 22nd, the afternoon shows a spike in energy to 562 (moderate), with a 5 ft swell from the ENE and a long period of 12 seconds. The wind is still cross-shore at 25 km/h, so it's not clean, but that's the first hint of real groundswell. It's a marginal call. Then Thursday, July 23rd, through Saturday, July 25th, the swell bumps up to 6 ft, with energy climbing into the 300-600 range, but it's still poor quality with that same cross-shore chop.
Now, here's where it gets interesting. On Sunday, July 26th, the swell swings to the E, drops to 5 ft, but the period jumps to 16 seconds—that's a very long-period groundswell. The energy is strong, hitting 1300 (Sunday morning) and 1406 (Sunday afternoon). However, the wind is cross-on from the ENE at 20 km/h, making it choppy. This is the best of a bad lot, but it's a compromise. This long-period swell is better suited for a point or reef, and Baldwin is a reef and point setup, so it could offer some decent lines if you can handle the chop. Monday, July 27th, is similar—5 ft to 6 ft, 14-second period, energy in the 1300s, but still cross-on wind. It's a marginal surf forecast, but this is your window. The water temp is about 80°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
After that, it fades out fast. By Wednesday, July 29th, the swell drops to 4 ft, period drops to 11 seconds, and energy tanks to 387. From there, it's a slow bleed into flatness through the start of August, with tiny 2 ft to 3 ft swells and strong cross-shore winds. The last week of the forecast is a dud.
So, if you're desperate, Sunday, July 26th, and Monday, July 27th, are your best shots. The swell is real, but it's not clean. Don't expect perfection. Baldwin Beach Park is a beginner-friendly spot normally, but with that 5-6 ft swell, it's getting into the "too big for beginners" territory, and the chop will make it a handful for anyone. The crowds are often there, so expect company.
