The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks at Baldwin Beach Park.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. For the rest of August, we’re looking at a long, flat spell. Most days have waves under 3ft with a short, weak period, and the wind is almost always chopping things up from the side or onshore. The combined swell energy is mostly weak to moderate. You’re not going to find anything clean or with any real push. This run of poor conditions stretches from Wednesday the 19th all the way through Monday the 31st of August. It’s a real bummer for a spot that’s usually so consistent.
Then, as we flip into September, things get a little more interesting, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. On Tuesday the 1st of September, we start seeing a serious pulse of swell. The morning shows waves building to 8ft from the E, with a period of 13 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell with real energy. The combined energy jumps to 2252 (very strong). But the wind is still a moderate cross-shore with a cross-chop, so it’s messy. By the afternoon, it’s cross-onshore and choppy, and the rating is no better. This size is getting into expert territory, and the conditions aren’t doing it any favours.
Wednesday the 2nd of September is the standout – if you’re a big-wave charger. We’ve got a solid 10ft swell rolling in from the ENE, with a 13-second period and combined energy readings up to 2838 (very strong). That’s a lot of water moving. However, a fresh cross-onshore wind at 19 miles per hour is going to blow it out pretty badly. This is a day for experienced crew only, and even then, it’ll be a battle. The swell direction from ENE matches the optimum of NNE reasonably well, but the wind just ruins the quality.
The rest of the first week of September looks similar – plenty of size, but the wind stays messy. The setup here is a reef and point, so a long-period swell like this can work, but with that cross-wind, it’s not going to be the clean, lined-up waves you’d hope for.
Honestly, if you’re after a paddle, you might want to sit this one out. With the big swell and strong side/onshore winds, the beach-and-reef setup here looks more interesting for kite surfing than a proper surf. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Hang in there, the forecasts can always change.
Rusty.
