The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’re looking at Baldwin Beach Park, and honestly, it’s a bit of a rough stretch to start. The water is a warm 79°F, which is about average for this time of year, so at least you won’t need a hood.
The first week and a half is pretty much a write-off. From Saturday the 18th right through to Friday the 24th, we’ve got poor surf conditions day after day. The swell is hanging around the 4ft to 6ft mark, but it’s all short-period, choppy, cross-shore junk with wind speeds between 9 and 16 mph. The combined energy is weak to moderate (between 169 and 389), and the waves are just messy. It’s a real struggle.
Things start to look a little more interesting from Thursday the 23rd, but it’s still only marginal. The swell picks up a bit to 5ft from the ENE, and the period stretches to 11 seconds, which gives it a bit more push. The combined energy jumps to 531. But the wind is still a cross-shore breeze at 16 mph, so it’s going to be bumpy.
Then we hit a real standout window. On Sunday the 26th of July, the energy really starts to build. The swell is 6ft from the E, but the period goes through the roof—17 seconds. That’s proper groundswell. The combined energy is a massive 1348. It’s a point and reef setup here, so that long-period swell will wrap in nicely. The wind is cross-onshore at 9 mph, which is creating some chop, but it’s manageable. The swell gets a bit bigger on Monday the 27th, hitting 6ft from the E with a 16-second period and energy up to 1934. This is the best of the run. The wind is lighter, a gentle breeze at 9 mph, so it’s only fairly choppy. For experienced surfers, this is the time to go. The swell is pushing over 5ft, so it’s not for beginners.
After that, Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th are still in the marginal zone with 7ft and 5ft swells, but the period drops steadily from 13 down to 12 seconds. The wind stays cross-onshore, so it’s never glassy. The last few days of the month and into August are back to that poor, short-period, cross-wind slop. Nothing to get excited about.
So, the standout is clearly Sunday the 26th through Monday the 27th. That long-period groundswell and the reef-point setup at Baldwin Beach Park should deliver the best waves. It’s not perfect with the wind, but it’s the only real window of good energy. Keep in mind, this spot is very consistent, so if it’s not great now, it won’t stay poor for long.
Rusty.
