The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: this 16-day window for Asilomar is a tough one. We’ve got a long stretch ahead where the surf is just not cooperating, and you’ll be waiting a good while before anything even borderline rideable shows up.
The first surf recommendation doesn’t kick in until Saturday, 29th August – that’s nearly two weeks of flat, poor, or just plain messy conditions from now. From Monday the 17th right through to Friday the 28th, the forecast is a write-off. We’re talking weak, short-period swell, often cross-onshore or onshore wind, and the wave energy is low to moderate, sitting around 251 to 499 on the combined energy scale. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing special.
Then, on Saturday morning, 29th August, we finally get a glimmer. Asilomar (a beach and reef setup) will see a small 3ft SSW swell, but with a solid 16-second period – that’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy picks up to 562 – moderate. It’s a “marginal” call because of tide concerns, but the wind is light from the NW, blowing onshore. It’s not ideal, but it’s the best we’ve got in this whole forecast. Sunday the 30th morning is similar with 3ft SSW swell, period 16 seconds, and combined energy 614. Again, light NW wind, but the tide might be a factor. For the rest of the period, the afternoon sessions are a write-off with cross-onshore wind and choppy conditions.
Honestly, there’s no standout session here. This is a quiet period. If you’re desperate, those Saturday and Sunday mornings at the end of the month are your only real shot, but keep expectations low. For beginners, this is fine – the swell is under 5ft – but the quality just isn’t there. For experts, there’s nothing to get excited about.
Rusty.
