Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough stretch for Asilomar. Over this whole 16-day run, we’re looking at a whole lot of nothing special. The first real chance to even paddle out doesn’t show up until Monday the 6th of July, but even then it’s a marginal call at best.
Monday morning the 6th is the first mention, with a small 3ft SSW groundswell at a very long 16 seconds. The combined wave energy is moderate (725), but don’t get too excited. The wind is a cross-onshore from the WNW at 9 mph, which is going to chop things up. Water temp is 60°F, which feels a touch warmer than average for this time of year. This is a beach and reef setup that needs light winds to be any good, and it just doesn’t have it here.
From there, it’s a grim picture. For the rest of the first week and into the second, the forecast is consistently labelled as “poor surf conditions.” The wind stays onshore or cross-onshore, mostly moderate breezes, and it ruins what little swell there is. There is a brief bump in height on the afternoon of Thursday the 9th – 6ft from the WNW – but with a short period of just 9 seconds and onshore wind, the quality will be terrible. That combined wave energy hits a strong 910, but it’s a messy, blown-out mess. For a break like Asilomar, this kind of onshore wind makes it look more interesting for kite surfers than those of us with paddles.
The entire run from the 6th of July right through to the 21st of July is a write-off. There are no standouts here. You’re looking at around two full weeks with nothing worth chasing. The swell stays small, the periods are either too short and weak, or too long and blown out. The energy readings are mostly in the moderate range (400s to 900s), but without clean wind, it’s worthless.
Forget it. The board stays in the car. Sometimes it’s like this here – a blank run is more normal than you’d hope. Forecasts can change, but right now, I wouldn’t even bother waxing up.
Rusty.
