Alright, let’s get real about West Wittering. I’ll be straight with you: the next couple of weeks aren’t looking great for a proper surf. The swell energy is just too weak, and the wind’s all over the place.
We’ve only got one break in the frame here, West Wittering (a beach/groyne setup, sheltered and inconsistent). The water is sitting at 68°F, which is *far warmer than normal* for this time of year – that’s a proper anomaly, feels more like a bath than the English Channel right now.
Right now, Thursday afternoon (2nd July), we’ve got a tiny 2ft swell from the SW with a short period of 6 seconds, and a cross-shore wind that’s keeping things choppy. The combined energy is a weak 16 – nothing doing.
Friday morning (3rd July) goes totally flat with 0.3ft and glassy conditions, but that’s not surf. The weekend (4th and 5th July) sees onshore and cross-onshore winds, with lumps of messy 2ft to 2ft swell, but the period drops to just 3 seconds – pure wind chop, not worth paddling out for.
Monday 6th through to Wednesday 8th July is mostly flat or tiny, with winds swinging around. There’s a moment on Wednesday morning (8th July) with glassy conditions and 0.3ft – but that’s a lake, not a wave.
From Thursday 9th July through to Wednesday 15th July, we go into a long stretch of clean, cross-offshore winds, but the swell stays tiny – 0.3ft to 0.7ft. The energy is between 1 and 9 – basically nothing. It’s a classic summer flat spell, and for a sheltered spot like West Wittering, that’s not unusual. The only faint glimmer is Thursday 16th July morning and afternoon: clean cross-offshore wind, and the swell bumps up to 1ft then 2ft from the SW, with a combined energy of 7 then 20. The period is short at 4 seconds, but with those clean conditions, a longboard might catch a few.
If there’s one standout in this whole 16-day run, it’s Thursday afternoon, 16th July. The swell is 2ft from the SW, the wind is cross-offshore and clean, and the energy hits 20 – still weak, but it’s the best we’ve got. For a longboard, that might just be rideable. Don’t expect any power, but the clean surface will be a treat after all this flatness.
Other than that, it’s a blank run. The spot is inconsistent and rarely breaks properly with such low energy. It tends not to stay this poor forever, but right now, the forecast looks pretty barren. For the rest of the 16 days, the swell stays under 3ft with no real punch.
Stay patient, and check back.
