Table - best surf conditions forecast for West Wittering over the next 16 days.
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for West Wittering over the next couple of weeks.
To be brutally honest, it’s a pretty grim picture. We’re looking at a long stretch of flat or near-flat conditions with no real surf to speak of for the first week and a half. The wave energy is barely registering, with values as low as 1 (weak energy) and the swell height stuck at 0.3 ft for most of that time. It’s going to be a frustrating wait for any wave action.
The only glimmer of something happens around Thursday 16 July afternoon, when a weak, short-period SSW swell bumps up to 2 ft, with a period of just 4 seconds. That’s windswell, and it’s messy. The combined energy is still only 14 (weak energy). The wind swings onshore from the SW, so it’ll be bumpy and choppy. Not one for the log.
Friday 17 July morning sees a bit more size, with a SSW swell of 3 ft at 6 seconds, and the energy lifts to 41 (weak energy). The wind is a clean cross-off from the N, so the surface might be half-decent for a short while. But with such a short period, it’s going to be weak and gutless. The afternoon gets messy again with a strong onshore.
The biggest window of the entire forecast comes on Friday 17 July afternoon, with a SSW swell of 4 ft and a period of 5 seconds. The combined energy hits 75 (still weak energy). But the wind is howling onshore from the WSW at 19 mph. That’s a write-off for surfing – it’ll be a blown-out, choppy mess. Honestly, with that setup and the beach/groyne structure, it’d be more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums. The swell drops right off again, with tiny 0.3 ft waves and weak energy for the rest of the outlook. There’s a tiny bump on Friday 24 July morning with a 0.3 ft SW swell but a period of 13 seconds – that’s a long-period groundswell, but it’s just too small to do anything. The energy is only 8 (weak energy).
The water temperature is a notable 68°F, which is a whopping 9°F warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s very unusual, so at least the water will feel like a warm bath.
There are no standouts here. The entire 16 days is a blank run for surf. It’s a tough one for the area, but it happens. Keep an eye on the charts, things can change.
