Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s lining up for the next couple of weeks around West Wittering. I gotta be straight with you – this stretch is looking pretty flat. We’ve got a long run of tiny, weak surf that’s hardly worth getting the wetsuit wet for. From now (July 6th) all the way through to July 14th, there’s almost nothing doing. The water temp is sitting at a very toasty 68°F, which is a solid 9°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s seriously unusual, feels more like the Med than the south coast.
We kick off Monday, July 6th with a miserable 0.3ft of swell from the west, period around 9 seconds, but a cross-on breeze from the WSW at 12 mph just churns it up. The combined wave energy is a pathetic 4 – so flat it’s almost a lake. Things don't get any better. Tuesday and Wednesday see a few tiny pulses, 2ft at best, but the wind is junk – mainly onshore or cross-onshore. By Wednesday morning, the 8th, we get a bit of glassy conditions from a light ESE breeze at 3 mph, but the swell is still a mere 0.3ft. You could float a cork, but you’re not surfing.
A long, clean spell kicks in from Friday, July 10th into the weekend – nice light offshore or cross-off breezes from the east. But again, the swell is practically non-existent, barely 0.3ft with weak energy readings of 1 or 2. It’s clean, but there’s no wave to ride. That pattern drags on into the middle of the following week.
Now, the first real sign of life comes later. On Wednesday, July 15th, we see a bit more shape. The morning is clean with a fresh offshore breeze from the ENE at 19 mph, and while the swell is still only 0.3ft, the combined energy ticks up to 6 – still tiny, but a hint of something. The afternoon is the best bet of the whole forecast: a 2ft swell from the southwest, with a short period of 4 seconds, and a cross-off breeze from the east. The energy jumps to 28 – still weak, but it’s the biggest wave we’ll see. It’s a small, weak line-up, but you might find a mushy, clean wave if you’re desperate.
Thursday, July 16th sees a drop-off again, with a messy 0.7ft from the WSW and a bit of rain. The rest of the period fizzles out into more flat, wind-affected conditions right up to July 21st. The afternoon of Saturday, July 18th offers a 2ft swell from the southwest, but the period is a short 3 seconds, creating weak, crumbly waves.
In short, if you were hoping for a score, there’s not one standout day. The pick of a very poor bunch is the afternoon of the 15th of July – a clean, knee-high wave with a cross-off breeze. It’s not worth a special trip, but if you’re a beginner looking for a gentle splash, you could have a laugh. For anyone else, save the wax.
Rusty.
