The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin' for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. 23 Beach is a consistent, exposed spot that normally picks up a bit of NW swell, but the wind is our enemy here. It’s almost always coming from the north or northeast, blowing right across or onshore, and that’s just gonna leave the surface chopped up and messy. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 75.4°F with a positive anomaly of 3.2°F, so it’s comfortable, but that’s about the only saving grace.
We’re basically looking at a dry spell for the first week and a bit. From Wednesday the 15th all the way through to the end of July, the conditions are consistently rated as poor. The swell is tiny to start, with a weak combined energy of only 38 (moderate energy) on Wednesday morning, and even as it builds, the cross-onshore wind just kills any chance of a clean wave. We get a bit more size around the 21st and 22nd with swell heights hitting 4.6ft and combined energy climbing into the 190s (moderate wave energy), but again, the wind is a dealbreaker.
The real standout, the only window that gets my heart pumping a little, is the morning of Monday the 27th of July. We’ve got a proper NW groundswell coming through at 5.9ft, a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 516 (strong wave energy). The wind looks like it might finally ease off and go cross-shore with a gentle breeze. That’s the best chance we’ll get for something rideable, though it’s still described as marginal. It’s not going to be perfect, but it’ll be the cleanest thing we see in the whole outlook. The swell is getting up there – 5.9ft is pushing it for beginners, so you’ll want some experience under your belt.
The morning of Tuesday the 28th also shows a bit of a pulse at 5.6ft from the NNW with a light breeze, but the wind is cross-on, and the energy drops to 361 (strong wave energy). It’s a maybe, but not a standout.
Honestly, for most of this period, the setup at this exposed beach with that persistent north wind looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. We’re in for a long, frustrating run. The only real glimmer of hope is that Monday morning session on the 27th. If you’re itching for a paddle, that’s your window.
