The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into what’s happening for 23 Beach over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be honest with you, this stretch is looking pretty grim. The swell is on offer, but the wind is going to wreck it for most of the period. The setup is exposed and the direction is mostly NW, but the wind is never truly offshore, so we’re looking at a lot of choppy, bumpy surf.
The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing wild there.
The first real chance to paddle out comes on Saturday, August 22nd in the morning. You’ll find a clean 3ft swell from the NW with a period of 8 seconds, and the wind is light and onshore, which is okay but not ideal. The combined energy is moderate (242). It’s marginal, but it’s the first sign of life. The afternoon gets a bit bigger at 4ft from the NNW with a longer 10-second period, but the wind stays onshore, making it a bit messy.
Sunday, August 23rd is the standout. The morning session has a tiny 2ft swell from the NW, but here’s the kicker: it’s a 16-second period groundswell pumping in with a light cross-onshore breeze. The energy is still moderate (310) but that long period means the waves will have some shape and power, just a bit of wind texture. The afternoon stays clean enough with a 4ft, 13-second swell from the NW, but the wind picks up a notch.
The following week, nothing really cleans up. Monday, August 24th morning gives you a 5ft, 10-second swell from the NW with a light cross-shore wind, making it the best bet for the rest of the week. The energy is moderate (377). After that, it’s a series of onshore winds and choppy conditions through to the end of August.
Late in the run, Saturday, August 29th morning has the biggest swell of the forecast – a solid 7ft from the NNW with an 11-second period. The wind is light and cross-shore, so it might be clean enough, but 7ft is pushing into expert territory. The energy is getting strong (890). This one is a long-range call, so don’t hold your breath, but it’s the only real window for a bigger wave.
The crowd situation at 23 Beach can be busy sometimes, but given the quality of the forecast, I doubt you’ll have to fight for a wave.
For the rest of the period, it’s a lot of 3ft to 5ft with onshore chop. The setup is a beach, so with that much wind and swell, it’s honestly looking more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. We’re looking at a long dry spell from mid-week onward, with only the weekend offering a glimmer of hope.
Stay tuned, forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
