Alright, mate, Rusty here. Let's have a good look at what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we’ve got one spot in the frame: 23 Beach. It’s a consistent, exposed beginner-friendly beach break that works best with a swell out of the NW – and that’s exactly what’s coming. The water is sitting at a very warm 76°, which is a whopping 5° above normal for this time of year, so it’s a swimsuit-only session.
The first real chance to wet a line doesn't hit until Sunday morning, July 12th. It’s a small start – only 3 ft of NW swell, with a 10-second period (moderate wave energy of 151). The wind is glassy out of the WNW at 3 mph, so the surface will be smooth. It’s not pumping, but it’s clean and rideable for a beginner on a longboard. This window is very short-lived though – by the afternoon the wind swings NNW and jumps to 12 mph, turning it into a choppy mess.
From Sunday afternoon all the way through Saturday, July 18th, things go pretty flat and ugly. The swell stays small, under 4 ft, with short periods (5-8 seconds) and onshore or cross-shore wind. The energy readings drop into weak territory – 45 to 130. There’s nothing worth paddling out for.
Now, Saturday morning, July 18th, we see a little bump. The swell pushes up to 5 ft at 8 seconds (energy up to 264), but the wind is still light and cross-onshore. It’s marginal – the kind of day you might check but probably won’t stay in the water long. Not a standout.
The real action starts brewing for Sunday, July 19th, and Monday, July 20th. We get a solid 6 ft to 7 ft NNW swell, period picking up to 9 seconds. The energy jumps into the strong range (549 and 618). However, the wind is onshore out of the NW on both mornings, so it’s going to be lumpy. This is for the experienced crew only – heavy, messy, and powerful. Beginners should stay well clear; 6 ft is already too big for them. It’s more of a wind-swell grinder than a groomed wave.
The one true standout in this whole outlook lands on Tuesday morning, July 21st. The swell drops a touch to 5 ft, but it’s a clean NNW groundswell with a 9-second period (wave energy 378). And mate, the wind is magic – a light ESE at 6 mph, blowing cross-offshore. That's a clean, groomed face. This is the pick of the fortnight. It’s not a giant, but it’s the best combination of size, shape, and conditions you’re going to get. Get on it early before the wind turns north in the afternoon.
After that, the swell slowly fades through the second week. Saturday morning, July 25th, offers another chance – 5 ft at 10 seconds (energy 445) with glassy conditions out of the NNE at 3 mph. A clean, lined-up morning, but keep in mind the crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so you might have company. It’s a solid second option, but the Tuesday session is the one to circle on the calendar.
Beyond that, from July 22nd to July 27th, it’s a slow decline back to knee-high mush with cross-onshore chop. Not worth blocking out time for.
So, to sum it up: the first week is mostly a write-off with a few clean, small windows. The Tuesday, July 21st morning session is the clear champion – solid chest-to-shoulder high, offshore wind, and decent energy. Don’t sleep on the Saturday, July 25th morning either, for a smaller but glassy backup.
Rusty.
