The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with it—this outlook for Titanzinho is a tough one. We’ve got consistent swell rolling in, but almost the entire 16-day window is plagued by poor surf quality. The wind is nearly always cross or cross-off, and that east swell is coming in short and choppy, making things a real mess. Worth noting, the combined energy of all swells directed here bounces around between 138 and 398—mostly moderate energy, but it’s all wasted on the wind.
Right out of the gate, from Friday the 21st of August through to at least Monday the 25th, it’s all ‘poor surf conditions.’ The swell sits around 4ft to 6ft from the east, with a short period of 6 to 8 seconds—that’s weak, wind-driven stuff. The wind is a steady 12–19 mph from the southeast or east, so it’s mostly cross or cross-off, which gives you that lumpy, chop-ridden surface. You might catch a clean early morning on the 21st, 23rd, 24th, and 25th, but the wave quality is still rated zero. There’s no standout here for a paddle surfer.
Tuesday the 25th of August sees the swell push up to 6ft with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined wave energy hits its highest of the window at 398—moderate-strong. But the wind is still a fresh 19 mph cross-off in the morning, switching to cross by afternoon. It’s going to be a fast, choppy, closed-out wall. This reef break (Titanzinho) is very consistent and exposed, with a SSW offshore preference, but we’re getting east swell and easterly winds, so it’s fighting against the optimum direction. For a beginner or intermediate, that 6ft with short period and cross-off wind is a handful. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, given the consistent cross-off breeze and lumpy waves.
From Wednesday the 26th of August, things don’t let up. The morning shows a 5ft east swell at 7 seconds with a clean cross-off wind, and the score inches up to a 1—’marginal’ due to tide—but the afternoon drops straight back to poor. The pattern repeats all the way through to Saturday the 5th of September: swell between 4ft and 6ft, short periods of 6–8 seconds, and relentless cross or cross-off winds from the east-southeast. The combined energy sits between 167 and 380, all moderate.
There is no true standout in this 16-day run. The only near-usable moment might be the morning of Wednesday the 26th of August, when it’s clean and the score hit that 1, but it’s still marginal. If you’re desperate for a paddle, that’s your best chance, but temper your expectations. Everyone else, save your energy for another stretch.
Keep your eyes on the water, mates. It’ll turn.
Rusty.
