Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, mate, it’s a grim stretch ahead. We’re looking at a solid run of poor surf conditions that goes all the way from Monday the 6th of July into the third week. There’s no standout session in sight and the whole 16-day window is pretty much a write-off for paddle surfing. The first actual surf recommendation doesn’t appear until the very end, and even then it’s marginal.
The only spot on offer is Titanzinho, a reef break that’s very consistent and exposed to the east, with the optimum swell coming from the north – but we just aren’t seeing that. The water temperature is sitting at 82°, which is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
Through the first week and a half, the swell hangs around 4ft to 5ft from the east, with short, weak periods of only 6 to 7 seconds. The combined wave energy is mostly in the moderate range, bouncing between 137 and 201, but the wind is the real killer. It’s blowing from the east and southeast at 12 to 16 mph, mostly cross or cross-off, which is keeping the surf messy with a cross-chop. Even the cleaner morning periods are plagued by poor surf quality. There’s just no power or shape in the water.
We do see a little bump in swell height around Sunday the 19th of July, reaching 6ft from the east with period still at 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 311, but the wind is still moderate and cross-off, and the surf conditions are still rated as poor. That kind of short-period, east swell on a reef with cross-off wind usually means a bumpy, walled-up mess – not fun for anyone.
The only flicker of hope comes on Monday the 20th of July, where the morning shows marginal surf with clean conditions and a 5ft east-northeast swell at 7 seconds, and combined energy of 203. The wind is cross-off from the southeast at 16 mph. It’s still not great, but if you’re desperate, that’s the one time in the whole outlook where the tide and conditions might line up for a few grovelly rides. Then Tuesday the 21st of July morning offers 5ft east swell, clean again, but still poor quality.
Overall? This is a flat and frustrating outlook. For the surf-starved, the morning of the 20th or 21st July at Titanzinho is your only real gamble. For everyone else, save the energy.
Rusty.
