The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. We’re looking at a pretty flat, tricky stretch ahead at Titanzinho. Honestly, for the next couple of weeks, we’re dealing with a lot of close-range, short-period windswell and cross-shore winds that are going to mess with the shape. It’s not a total washout, but you’re going to have to work for anything half-decent, and the standout days are few and far between.
The opening week is grim. Through the 20th to the 24th, we’ve got waves, but they’re mostly poor. The swell is hovering around 4 ft to 6 ft with a short, fat period of only 6 to 7 seconds. That’s not a groundswell; that’s just chop with no push. The winds are mostly cross or cross-off from the SE, which keeps the surface clean-ish in the mornings, but the afternoons turn into a cross-shore mess. The combined energy is weak to moderate, sitting under 300, so there’s not much punch behind it. I wouldn’t be scrambling for the board bag just yet.
What’s interesting is that Thursday morning, the 3rd of September, is the one little glimmer of hope in this whole window. It’s the only time the forecast nudges the score up at all from a flat zero. The swell is still small, at 5 ft, but there’s slightly more energy in the water, with a combined energy reading of 239. The wind looks a bit lighter, coming in at 12 mph from the SE, which is cross-off and should keep it clean. It’s still a short-period swell at 6 seconds, so it won’t be a classic, but it might be the only time the bank holds together and gives you a couple of fun ones. It’s only a 1 out of 10 for a reason, though—that’s a marginal call, not a green light.
Otherwise, the ocean is just kind of blah. Saturday the 29th and Monday the 1st have that fresh cross-shore wind that’s going to make it lumpy and messy. Tuesday the 4th sees a bump in swell height to 6 ft and the energy jumps up to 417, which sounds good, but the period is still 7 seconds and the wind is cross, so it’ll be a fat, bumpy, close-out mess. For the crew looking to get wet, it’s about picking your window—the clean mornings are your best bet, but the quality is severely lacking. It’s times like these you consider the kite setup because the paddle surf is going to be a struggle.
There’s no one single standout here. The best bet is that Thursday morning, September 3rd, but keep your expectations in check. The rest is just a grind of small, short-period slop. It’s a long stretch of mediocrity, and we’ll have to wait for the season to really wake up.
Rusty, out.
