The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s talk about what’s cooking at Titanzinho.
To be straight with you, the outlook over the next 16 days is a tough one. From the 16th of July right through to the end of the month, there’s nothing that’s really shaping up for a proper surf. The swell is there, but it’s mostly coming from the east with short periods around 6-7 seconds, which means it’s messy and lacks the push you’d want for a decent session. The wind is a constant problem too – it’s cross or cross-off from the southeast or east-southeast, blowing at 12-18 mph, which is enough to put a chop on the surface and keep things from cleaning up. The water temp is sitting at 81°, which is pretty average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
The first few days – Thursday the 16th through the weekend – look pretty grim. You’re looking at 4ft to 6ft of east swell, but with that period at 7 seconds or less, it’s going to be a bumpy, weak affair. The combined energy readings are moderate, like 224 down to 127, but none of it translates to quality. The score is a flat zero across the board, and the wave comment says “poor surf conditions” every time. That’s the reality.
The whole week of the 21st to the 25th is the same story – consistent 4ft to 5ft east swell, period barely touching 6 seconds, and the wind just won’t let up. The mornings are sometimes cleaner with a cross-off breeze, but the swell is too short and weak to get excited about. The energy readings stay in the low to mid 100s, which is moderate at best, but again, it’s not translating into anything rideable.
As we push into the last week of July, things don’t improve. The 26th to the 31st still has that east swell, 5ft max, with period stuck at 6-7 seconds. The wind is still cross or cross-off, and the energy readings start to drop off – 208 on the 26th, 219 on the 27th, then down to 101 on the 30th. On the 29th, we get a tiny 1ft from the north-northeast with a 9-second period, but that’s a blip that’s barely worth mentioning.
Honestly, there’s no standout session here. Nothing that screams “go paddle out.” This is a reef break that’s very consistent, but when the swell direction is off and the wind is wrong, it just doesn’t fire. The crowds are often an issue here, but with this kind of forecast, that’s probably the only saving grace – nobody’s going to be out.
If you’re a beginner, the size is okay, but the short period and chop make it too tricky. If you’re an expert, there’s nothing to get excited about. This setup looks better for kite surfing than paddle surfing, honestly.
So, I’ll be blunt: there’s no good surf to be had in the next 16 days. It’s a long, dry run. But forecasts can change, so don’t give up on it just yet.
Rusty.
