The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s give it to you in feet and miles. The outlook for the next 16 days is a rough one. The Bunker at Playa Honda is a sheltered, inconsistent reef break that needs a very specific ENE swell, and we just aren't getting it. From now through the 16th of August, it’s a solid run of poor surf conditions with zero combined wave energy. The wind is a constant cross-off from the north, and while it looks clean, there’s simply no swell to work with. It’s flat.
There is a glimmer starting Sunday, August 16th. A tiny 0.3ft south swell starts appearing, with a long period of 13 seconds and a combined energy of just 4 (weak). The Bunker is sheltered from the south, so this is more of a tease. The same tiny pulse continues into Monday the 17th with a 15-second period and 0.3ft, still from the south. The energy is still barely a whisper (4). This pattern of tiny, weak south swell hangs around through the 23rd of August. The combined energy rarely gets above 6 (weak), and the swell direction is all wrong for this spot. The optimum swell is from the ENE, and we’re seeing south, southwest, and a brief bit of northeast on the 23rd, but with a short period of 9 seconds. It’s not enough.
There is no standout session here. The best we can say is the water temperature is about average for this time of year, but with no real swell and a constant moderate to fresh cross-off breeze, it’s a stretch to call this a surf outlook. The Bunker is inconsistent at the best of times, and a blank run like this is just part of the deal here. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing given the persistent wind and lack of wave. Keep an eye on the forecast, because it tends not to stay this poor for long, but for now, save your energy.
Rusty.
