The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's chew the fat on what's coming up over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it's a slow, drawn-out period. We've only got one spot, Thaila, to talk about, and it's a reef. The water's sitting at 69°F, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so that's a nice little bonus.
The first week is a bit of a write-off. From Thursday the 16th right through to Sunday the 20th, the wave energy is weak to moderate (160 to 969) and the wind is mostly cross-on or even onshore, making for some pretty average, choppy conditions. The swell is tiny, around 1ft to 2ft, and the period is all over the place. It's not really worth the effort.
Things start to get a little more interesting around Monday the 21st. The swell nudges up to 3ft from the SSW, but the wind is still a problem. We get a few windows of light offshore winds on the 23rd and 24th, with the swell building to 5ft from the S, with a period around 14 seconds. The energy is getting strong (1091 to 1292). That’s the meat of the forecast, but it's still just a "marginal" call. It's not going to be firing, but for a surfer who's been waiting, it's something to watch, especially if that light offshore wind holds.
The real standout, if you can call it that, looks to be the morning of Saturday the 25th of July. The swell is 5ft from the SSW with a period of 13 seconds, and the wind is light and offshore from the SSW. The combined energy is strong (1313). That's the cleanest window of the whole period. It's consistent enough to offer a few, and the offshore wind will make it glassy. The crowds are a sometimes thing, so you might have it to yourself.
After that, it drops back down. The last few days of July and into the 31st, the swell hangs around 3ft to 5ft, but the wind is either cross-on or light onshore. It's a fade-out. The energy is still moderate to strong, but the conditions just aren't there to make it a great session.
So, for the best bet, set your alarm for the 25th of July. Show up early, get the clean, glassy SSW swell, and enjoy a few lines before the wind turns. After that, you're waiting on the next system.
Rusty.
