The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what Thaila’s got cooking for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, it’s a slow start. The first solid recommendation doesn't roll in until Saturday the 29th of August. For over a week before that, we’re looking at tiny, weak swell and messy winds that just aren't worth paddling out for. A few mornings have that “marginal” look, but the energy is low (mostly around 200-300 range) and the conditions are poor. You’d be fighting cross-onshore breeze for barely a ripple.
The real story, and the only standout in this whole outlook, is that Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th. Finally, the ocean wakes up. We’ve got a decent pulse of SSW swell building, pushing 4ft to 4ft. The period is a solid 16 to 18 seconds, which is proper groundswell energy – that means long lines, good shape, and plenty of push. The combined energy jumps right up into the strong range (882 to 942), so you’ll feel the power.
For a reef like Thaila, that’s a dream setup. The wind is forecast to be light and offshore from the SSW on the Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. That should glass things off and make for some really clean, punchy waves. This isn't for beginners – over 3ft on a reef with that period has some push – but for anyone with a bit of experience, this will be a wicked session. The water is much warmer than average for this time of year, sitting around 72°F, so booties won't be needed.
The only downside is that this is still over a week away, so treat it as a promising call rather than a sure thing. The pattern also fades quickly. After that Sunday arvo, the swell drops back down, the energy numbers fall off a cliff, and we’re back to small, choppy leftovers heading into the first week of September.
There is no other window worth paddling for in this run. That weekend at the end of August is your shot.
Rusty.
