The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
It’s a pretty quiet start. I’m not seeing any real surf worth paddling out for until the week begins to turn. The first real signs of life come late on Monday the 24th, but it’s still a marginal call. The pattern is building slowly, though, so don’t lose hope.
The session to keep your eyes on is actually the furthest out. The best chance we get is shaping up for Thursday morning, 4th September at Thaila, a reef break. This is the standout. The combined swell energy is looking strong at 1203, with a solid 4ft swell from the SSW. The period is a nice long 19 seconds, which is proper groundswell – that’s going to have some serious push and shape. The wind is a light cross-onshore breeze, which should keep the surface fairly clean. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 70°F. This is the one to circle on the calendar, but it’s a long way out, so don’t bet the farm on it just yet.
The days leading up to that are a bit of a mixed bag. On Wednesday morning, 26th August, we see a bump in size to 4ft, but the onshore wind is a bit messier, and the period drops to 13 seconds. It’s a notch below the main event. Similarly, Saturday morning, 29th August has a reasonable 3ft SSW swell, but the wind is cross-onshore, making it just okay.
For the rest of the run, the waves are frustratingly small or the wind is just wrong. There are a lot of mornings with light breezes, but the swell is barely a ripple. The 1st of September has a brief spike of 4ft, but the period is a short, choppy 7 seconds, so it’s not going to be worth the effort.
The long-range outlook for the 4th and 5th of September is the most promising, but we’re talking about a week and a half away. The waves are there, but the conditions are still just marginal. If the wind shifts a little more offshore, that Wednesday morning session on the 4th could be a real treat.
Stay patient, and keep your eyes on the forecast.
Rusty.
