The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this stretch from Saturday the 18th of July right through to the end of the month is a bit of a mixed bag, and it’s gonna test your patience. Most of the time, the surf is poor or only marginal, with a lot of cross-onshore wind messing things up. There’s a real gap at the start: nothing worth paddling out for on Saturday the 18th, and Sunday the 19th is only a 1/10. We’re looking at a solid week of pretty average conditions before anything starts to feel a little better.

Alright, let’s talk about the one spot in the frame: Thaila, a beginner-friendly reef break. The water temp is sitting at 69°F, and it’s a touch warmer than usual for this time of year – not a bad thing for a session.

The best window really starts to shape up from Thursday morning the 30th of July. Thursday morning has a 4ft swell from the SSW, period 15 seconds, with light offshore wind from the SSW at 6 mph. The combined energy is strong at 1049, and that offshore wind means clean conditions. That afternoon, the swell bumps up to 5ft from the S, but the wind goes cross-onshore, so the morning is the pick. The swell is getting up there, over 5ft, so it’s gonna be a bit much for total beginners, but the long period (15 seconds) means proper groundswell energy – better shaped waves, longer waits between sets. For a reef break, that’s a good thing.

Then Friday the 31st of July is another standout. Friday morning: 5ft from the S, period 14 seconds, with a slight air (almost glassy) from the SW at 3 mph. That’s as clean as it gets. Combined energy is 965 – strong. Friday afternoon holds 5ft S swell, but the wind picks up to a light cross-onshore. So again, the morning is your golden hour.

Saturday the 1st of August morning is still okay – 5ft SSW, period 13 seconds, with light offshore wind – but the energy drops to 690. After that, Sunday the 2nd of August sees the swell drop to 4ft, and the wind is cross-onshore, so things are fading.

Through the whole run, the swell direction is mostly SSW and S, which matches the optimum SW direction for Thaila pretty well. Crowds are listed as “sometimes”, so you might have a few others with the same idea on those clean mornings, but it won’t be a circus.

The real standout is Thursday morning the 30th of July – that’s the one to circle. Clean offshore, 4ft of long-period groundswell, strong energy. The next best is Friday morning the 31st of July. After that, it’s back to average. Don’t waste your time on the first week – it’s a write-off.

Rusty.
