Table - best surf conditions forecast for Thaila over the next 16 days.
Right then folks, Rusty here. It's been a bit of a lean stretch, and truth be told, this outlook's a tough one to get fired up about. We've got Thaila in the mix, a fairly consistent reef break that's a beginner spot, but the conditions just aren't lining up for a good paddle.
The main issue is the wind. For the vast majority of this 16-day window, from Tuesday the 7th of July right through to Wednesday the 22nd of July, it's swinging between a light onshore breeze and a moderate cross-onshore. That's bringing a fair bit of chop and keeping the surf quality in the poor to marginal range. Even when we get a bit of a long-period groundswell, like that 18-second energy from the SSW, the wind messes it right up.
The highlight, if you can call it that, really is the very start. On Tuesday morning, July 7th, we've got a decent long-period groundswell – 18 seconds – pushing in at about 3 ft from the SSW. The combined swell energy is solid at 726, and the water temp is a normal 66°F. The wind is a light onshore breeze, which will mean the surface is clean. It's about the best you'll see, but honestly, the crowd factor is a solid "sometimes".
After that morning, the quality drops off a cliff. The wind swings cross-onshore, and the surf gets choppy and unpleasant. The swell sticks around through the week, dropping into the 3 ft–3 ft range, but it's never clean.
If you were hoping for a window later on, it doesn't really improve. The swell dies right down, getting as small as 1 ft by the 15th of July. There's a tiny pulse of 2 ft swell on the 19th and 20th, but with a moderate onshore wind, it's just a messy, choppy affair. For a solid two weeks or more, there's nothing that's genuinely good.
Thaila itself is a spot that can work, but with the wind being constantly cross-onshore or onshore, and the surf quality staying so poor, this setup honestly looks more interesting for a kite than a paddle.
Rusty.
