G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Thaila.
Alright, straight up – the next two weeks are mostly a write-off for Thaila. There’s a long stretch of pretty ordinary conditions, with only a couple of days that might be worth a look. The surf kicks off this Saturday morning, July 4th, with a small 2ft SSW swell rolling in at a long 14-second period, but the wind is onshore from the WSW at 9 mph, and the wave energy is weak (355). It’s just poor surf, flat and choppy. That pretty much sets the tone for the first week. Through Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, the swell stays tiny at 2ft to 3ft, mostly from the SSW, with periods up to 18 seconds – that’s a long period groundswell, which would normally be promising, but the cross-onshore wind from the W or WSW keeps it messy and blown out. There’s a brief window on Tuesday morning, July 7th, where the wind is offshore from the SSW at 6 mph, and the swell bumps to 3ft with an 18-second period, but the wave energy is moderate (710) and the surf is still only marginal. It’s a small, cleanish wave but nothing to get excited about.
The middle of the week from Wednesday to Friday stays poor – small swell, cross-onshore winds, and weak energy. Saturday July 11th has a bit of hope with offshore wind from the SW at 6 mph, but the swell is only 3ft to 3ft with a 15-second period, and the energy is weak (354). It’s marginal, but not worth paddling out for. Then from Sunday July 12th through to Friday July 17th, it’s a real drought – swell drops to 1ft to 2ft, periods are all over the place, and the wind is mostly cross-onshore. The energy is weak (under 300), and the surf is just poor. That’s a solid six days of nothing.
Now, the standout window comes in the second week, on Saturday July 18th. The swell picks up to 4ft from the SSE with a 17-second period – that’s a nice long period groundswell – and the wave energy jumps to strong (1135). The wind is light cross-onshore from the SSW at 6 mph, so it’ll be a bit bumpy but not too bad. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual. Thaila is a reef break, fairly exposed to the SW, and it’s fairly consistent, so this south swell will hit it reasonably well. The crowd is sometimes a factor, so you might see a few others out. This is your best bet for the whole outlook – a cleanish 4ft wave with plenty of energy. Sunday July 19th sees the swell jump to 6ft from the S with a 15-second period, and the energy is very strong (1589), but the wind is cross-onshore from the WNW at 9 mph, making it choppy and messy. That size is getting into expert territory, especially with the wind, so it’s a bit of a wild card.
Bottom line: the first week is a dud. The real action is on Saturday July 18th – that’s the one to circle. It’s not perfect, but it’s the cleanest, most energetic swell of the whole run.
Rusty.
