The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's coming up at Thaila.
Overall, it's a real mixed bag. We've got a persistent run of small, messy, onshore swell with a few faint glimmers of potential later on. The water temp is sitting at a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, about 69°F, which is a little above average.
First off, the immediate outlook isn't promising. From Saturday the 18th through to Friday the 24th, it's pretty poor. We're looking at weak swell, mostly under 3ft, with light onshore winds and cross-onshore breezes that are just chopping things up. The energy levels are low, barely scraping into the moderate range at best (295 at the start). It's a stretch to call most of these sessions surfable. The set-up looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on those afternoons with a bit more wind.
Then, heading into the weekend of the 25th and 26th of July, there's a subtle shift. The swell starts to pick up a bit, with longer periods arriving. By Saturday morning the 25th, we're seeing a 3ft SW groundswell with a very long 21-second period and moderate wave energy (1037). The wind stays light and onshore, but that period is so long it might just break a bit too straight for a reef break. Saturday and Sunday mornings are your best bets, but it's still only marginal.
The real standout window, the one worth keeping an eye on, is the end of the month. From Monday the 27th through Wednesday the 29th of July, we've got consistent 4ft to 4ft SSW groundswell with periods between 16 and 19 seconds. The wave energy is solid, hitting over 1000 on Monday and Tuesday afternoons. The wind is forecast to be light and onshore, which is the key. This swell is big enough and has enough period to get the reef working, and with the offshore direction being SW, it's lining up nicely. Tuesday the 28th afternoon stands out with a 4ft SSW swell, 18-second period and energy at 1025 - that's your best chance. It's still not firing on all cylinders, but for this stretch, it's the pick.
Things get a bit gnarly right at the end. On Friday the 31st of July, we see the swell push up to 5ft from the S, still with a decent 15-second period and strong energy (1351). This is getting into the territory where it's too big for beginners. Then it drops off quickly into the first weekend of August, with poor, weak, and choppy conditions returning.
So, for a surfer, the takeaway is this: don't get wet this week. Be patient. The best bet is to pencil in Tuesday the 28th of July at Thaila, aiming for the afternoon session with that 4ft SSW swell and glassy conditions. The weekend after that also has potential, but it's a bit more uncertain. Stay tuned, forecasts can change.
Rusty.
