The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s happening at Te Ikaamaru Bay.
Honestly, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for surf. We’re looking at a long stretch of flatness or poor conditions. The spot is fairly consistent, but the swell and wind aren’t playing ball. The first real chance of anything is a long way out, and even then, it’s a gamble.
Starting Wednesday, July 15th, it’s a no-go. You’ve got a tiny 4ft swell from the NNW, but a fresh onshore wind is just killing it. That sets the tone for the whole first week. From the 17th through the 23rd, we hit a flat spell, with combined energy dropping to zero for days on end. There’s nothing to ride.
Then July 24th rolls around. A small 4ft swell from the NNW shows up, but it’s blown out by a strong onshore wind at 22 to 25 mph. The energy is a weak 54, so it’s a pass.
The real tease is July 28th and 29th. On the 28th, the swell builds to 6ft to 8ft from the NNW, with a moderate combined energy of 241 and 406. But the wind is still a strong onshore breeze, making it a total mess. It’s a classic *looks good on paper, but forget it in the water* – this setup is way more interesting for kite surfing than surfing. The next day, the 29th, we finally get a clean offshore wind from the S, but the swell drops to 4ft with a period of 8 seconds. The energy is still moderate at 201, and the wind is strong, but it’s offshore. That’s your only real window, and it’s going to be a tough, windy session.
The best of a bad bunch is the morning of Thursday, July 29th. It’s not a standout, but it’s the only time we see clean offshore wind with any swell. The water temperature is about average for the time of year.
So, to wrap it up: this is a rough patch. The first week is a write-off, and the second week has a couple of days that are worth a look only if you’re desperate and don’t mind the wind. Don’t get your hopes up.
Rusty.
