The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty, and I’ve got the local scoop on what’s coming up for Te Ikaamaru Bay. Right now, the surf is a total no-go, with a big stretch of nothing solid for the first week and a half.
The outlook is a flat and messy run through most of July. Monday the 20th is clean but tiny – a gentle offshore breeze, but with no swell to speak of, there’s nothing to ride. Tuesday the 21st brings some lumpy, cross-onshore slop with a 3 ft swell from the north, but that short period of 4 seconds means it’s junky and not worth the paddle-out. Wednesday the 22nd is clean again but still flat, with just 1 ft of weak swell. Thursday and Friday see the wind cranking up, blowing it out with 3 ft and 7 ft of messy, cross-onshore junk – that Friday morning has near-gale winds (55 km/h), and combined energy at 423 (moderate), but it’s a total write-off. Saturday the 25th brings a tiny 0.7 ft groundswell with a very long period of 17 seconds, but it’s crossed up with light wind and the energy is weak (52), so it’s not doing much. Sunday the 26th is clean but still only 1 ft. Then from Monday the 27th through Wednesday the 29th, we get a mix of glassy conditions and lumpy cross-onshore stuff, but waves are mostly absent or barely breaking – nothing above 3 ft and all with terrible periods.
Thursday the 30th of July shows a jump in size, with a 8 ft to 10 ft north swell (period 7 seconds) and combined energy hitting 453 to 779 (moderate to strong). But the wind is howling onshore at 35 to 45 km/h, so it’s blown-out mush. Then Friday the 31st sees up to 13 ft from the NNW (period 8 seconds) with energy at 2209 (very strong), but with near-gale onshore winds, it’s a no-go for paddle surfing – that setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than anything else.
Finally, the window opens on Saturday the 1st of August. The morning is the standout: a clean, glassy dawn with a 10 ft northwest swell (period 8 seconds) and combined energy at 1195 (strong). Winds are calm from the south, and it’s glassy – that’s a major plus. This is big, solid surf, well over 8 ft, so it’s strictly for experienced surfers – beginners will be out of their depth. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there. The afternoon sees conditions drop to a cleaner 5 ft from the NNW (period 9 seconds, 408 energy) with a light cross-off breeze. The best wave of the whole period is that Saturday morning glass-off with a solid 10 ft swell – it’s the one to circle on your calendar. Keep in mind this is a fairly consistent break with a northwest optimum, and the swell direction matches perfectly. Crowds are possible, so get in early.
Sunday the 2nd of August fades fast – a 3 ft northwest swell (period 6 seconds) with onshore winds and low energy (89) is not worth the effort, and the afternoon is even weaker. After that, Monday and Tuesday the 3rd and 4th of August are flat and clean but empty.
So, there’s a big gap of nothing real until the start of August, and the only true standout is that Saturday morning glassy session. Lock it in.
