The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break it down.
First up, Te Ikaamaru Bay. The next few days are a total washout. The wind is all over the place and the swell is messy. Water temp is about standard for this time of year, nothing special. The waves are tiny with weak energy (70), a long period NW groundswell of 1ft, but it’s blown out by a NNW wind. Not worth getting wet.
We’ve got a real dry spell. From Monday the 24th through Friday the 28th, it’s all poor. Cross-onshore winds, lumpy, choppy, and the swell is either too small or too messy. Friday the 28th morning has some size – 8ft of swell – but the wind is a strong cross-onshore at 25 mph and the energy is high (454), but it’s just a messy, blown-out mess. This is a beach setup, so that wind wrecks it. It’s more of a kite surfer’s scene than a paddle surfer’s.
Saturday the 29th morning is the first real sign of hope. The wind goes light east at 3 mph, offshore enough to smooth things out. The swell is small, 3ft from the NNW with a 8-second period. The energy is moderate (103) and the conditions are clean. It’s surfable, but nothing special. Crowds are “sometimes” here, so you might see a few heads, but it won’t be packed.
The real standout is Wednesday the 2nd of September afternoon. That’s the one to aim for. We’ve got 8ft of NW swell, a 7-second period, and a strong offshore wind from the SSE at 22 mph. The energy is strong (526) and the conditions are fresh offshore and clean. This is the session to circle. The swell is solid but not too big for experienced surfers, and the offshore wind will make for clean, lined-up waves. The break can be a bit inconsistent, but when it’s on, it’s on.
Thursday the 3rd of September morning and afternoon are also worth a look. The swell drops to 5-5ft from the NNW and NW, with a moderate offshore wind from the ESE and SSE. The energy is moderate (144-170) and the conditions are clean. Not as punchy as Wednesday, but still a solid option.
After that, from Friday the 4th onwards, it fades out again. The winds turn cross-onshore, the swell gets small, and the energy is weak. The second week is mostly quiet, with only a few small windows of clean conditions.
So, bottom line: circle Wednesday the 2nd of September afternoon at Te Ikaamaru Bay. That’s the best of the bunch. The rest of the fortnight is mostly a waiting game.
Rusty.
