The Lowdown
Alright, mate, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s going on at Te Ikaamaru Bay for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a rough stretch. The first week and a half is mostly a bust. We’ve got some serious swell—there’s a 10 ft pulse on Sunday the 23rd with a massive 1527 combined energy—but it’s all hammered by strong onshore winds. That’s a no-go. The water’s sitting at 52°, which is about average for this time of year, but with that wind, it’ll feel miserable.
We slog through a lot of lumpy, choppy, and wind-affected days. The Monday the 31st morning goes glassy with a light SSW breeze, but the swell is tiny at 3 ft and short period, so it’s not really worth the effort. There’s a clean window on Saturday the 5th of September with cross-off winds, but again, the swell is only 3 ft with a weak 4-second period, and the energy is a pitiful 43. Nothing to write home about.
The one real standout is Sunday the 6th of September. Early morning, it’s glassy—dead calm, NNE breeze at just 3 mph. The swell is a solid 8 ft out of the NW with a 7-second period, and the combined energy is a strong 525. That’s a lot of water moving. But here’s the catch—this is a 8 ft wave at a beginner-friendly spot, so that’s way too big for the learners. This is for the experienced guys only. The wave direction is NW, which matches the optimum swell direction for this break, so it should line up well. The wind is glassy, so the surface will be clean. But that 7-second period means it’s a windswell, not a groundswell—shorter, steeper, more likely to close out. It’s still the best day on offer, but don’t expect perfection.
The crowd situation at Te Ikaamaru Bay is listed as "sometimes", so you might see a few others out there, but with that size and the conditions, it should be manageable.
The Monday the 7th of September has similar size, 8 ft, but the wind swings cross-onshore, chopping it up. The window is short.
So, to wrap it up: if you’ve got the skills and the patience, the morning of Sunday the 6th of September is your only real chance. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or both. It’s a long, dry run for a beginner, but for the experienced crew, there’s a window worth watching.
Rusty.
