The Lowdown

G'day, Rusty here with a look at the next couple of weeks for Te Ikaamaru Bay. Straight up, the story here is pretty simple: we're staring down the barrel of a long, quiet period. There are no good surf options on the table in this 16-day window, so if you're desperate for a wave elsewhere, this run might test your patience. That said, the outlook for the Bay itself is a reminder that it doesn't tend to stay flat forever, and the forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it.

The water temp is sitting at 55°, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there. But the surf itself? It's pretty much a write-off. The first few days are showing next to no energy, with combined swell energy readings barely creeping above zero—just 8 (weak) on Thursday morning, and then nothing Friday. We get a spike in size from Saturday the 22nd right through Sunday, but that's all onshore wind—near gale to strong breeze stuff—pushing in a messy 6ft to 7ft of windswell. That's going to be raw and lumpy, not worth paddling out for.

There's a bit of a lull early in the following week before another pulse of stronger swell pushes through mid-week. By Thursday the 27th, the combined energy hits a massive 1227 (strong energy), but it's still pinned to strong onshore winds. The swell direction is NNW, which is the opposite of the bay's optimum NW, and with those winds, it'll just be blown out. That kind of setup points more to kite surfing than paddle surfing for the Bay, to be honest.

By the tail end of the period, we see some clean, glassy conditions on the 29th and a brief window of offshore SE winds on the 28th and 29th, but the swell is tiny—just 0.3ft in height. It's almost flat, and the combined energy is negligible (2 to 7 in the brackets). For the last few days into early September, the energy fades completely, with zero combined swell and messy cross-onshore winds.

So, the headline: no standout options here. The closest thing to a window is a brief, clean but essentially flat period starting around Friday the 28th with offshore winds, but you'd be struggling to find a ride. It's a tough run for the Bay.

Rusty.
