The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Te Ikaamaru Bay over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, this is a tough stretch. The next few days are basically a write-off. We’ve got nothing but poor surf conditions right through until at least Thursday the 22nd of August. There’s a long gap of dead-flat or messy conditions with strong onshore winds, and no real swell to speak of. The water temp is sitting around 56°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only positive.
On Friday the 23rd of August, we start to see some life, but don’t get your hopes up. There’s a 6ft swell from the NW with a period of 8 seconds, but the wind is howling onshore from the WNW at 22 mph, making it a messy, blown-out affair. The combined energy is moderate at 445 (moderate wave energy). This is more of a kite-surfing day than a paddle-surfing day.
The only window that even looks vaguely surfable is Tuesday the 27th of August. The morning shows a 4ft NW swell (6-second period) with light offshore SSE winds at 6 mph. The combined energy is weak at 141 (weak wave energy). It’s clean, but the waves are ordinary. Still, if you’re desperate, that’s your best bet – a beginner-friendly, fairly consistent spot with sometimes crowds, but the conditions will be small and weak.
After that, we’re back into poor conditions through to the end of the month and into early September. The second week offers a few bumps of NW swell but it’s all plagued by onshore or cross-onshore winds and lumpy seas. Nothing stands out as worth paddling out for.
Honestly, for Te Ikaamaru Bay, this is a pretty blank run. It’s not unusual for the area to go quiet like this. Forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing to get excited about.
