The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Well, I’ve got to be straight with you – this 16-day stretch for Te Ikaamaru Bay is a tough one. We’re looking at a long, frustrating run of poor conditions right from the start. The water’s sitting at about 55°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, no real surprises there.
It’s a blank run for the first couple of weeks. There’s a big gap from the get-go where there’s just no surf worth paddling out for. Thursday the 20th is flat as a tack, and that sets the tone. Friday the 21st brings in a tiny knee-high swell, but the wind is all wrong – cross-onshore and lumpy – so it's a total write-off. The weekend of the 22nd and 23rd is a mess: strong onshore winds from the NW are howling, and while the swell builds to 10ft on Sunday morning, it’s a windy, gutless shambles with a combined energy of 1085, so it’s just a washing machine. Not for the faint-hearted, and honestly, it looks more like a kite session than a surf.
We get a lifeline on Wednesday the 26th afternoon. Things finally turn. The wind swings to a light cross-offshore from the SSW, and the swell is a solid 8ft from the NW with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy is a strong 604. The conditions clean right up. This is the only real window in the first two weeks that could offer a few waves, but at 8ft, it’s only for the experienced crew. It’s a moment of hope in an otherwise bleak run.
After that, it’s back to the grind. The end of August and start of September is just more of the same – onshore chop, strong winds, and poor surf. It’s a long, slow stall.
Then, right at the tail end of the outlook, we get a proper standout. On Thursday the 3rd of September, we finally see a real change. The morning kicks off with a clean, cross-offshore breeze from the SSE, and an 8ft swell from the NW rolling in with a 9-second period. The combined energy is 1157 – that’s serious power. That afternoon is just as good, with light offshore winds and the same solid 8ft swell. For the first time, we get the phrase “expect very good surf conditions,” and it’s not hard to see why. This is the one to circle on the calendar. It’s a long way off, so keep an eye on the charts, but if it holds, this is the day.
So, to sum it up: mostly a dust storm, with one promising Wednesday afternoon and a proper gem on Thursday the 3rd of September. Hang in there.
Rusty.
