Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, this is Rusty, and I'm looking at the forecast for Te Ikaamaru Bay. Straight up, the next week and a half is a write-off for surfing. We're looking at a solid 10-day gap with no real surf on offer. The wind is howling from the south and southeast with gale-force gusts, and what little swell there is, is tiny – we're talking 0.3ft to 1ft stuff from the NW and NNW. The water temp is about 56°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so that's not the issue.
The first real chance of anything rideable comes on Tuesday the 14th of July. Even then, it's not good. We get a pulse of 5ft to 6ft swell from the north, but the energy is still weak to moderate (117 to 214), and it's coupled with a strong cross-onshore wind. That's going to be messy and blown out. The swell period is short, around 5 to 6 seconds, so it's just windswell junk. This is a beginner break and fairly consistent, but that onshore wind will ruin it.
Wednesday the 15th of July is similar, with 5ft to 6ft from the NNW, but still cross-onshore and messy. The energy picks up a bit (316), but it's not worth it. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The only faint glimmer comes on Friday the 17th of July. We get a clean 5ft swell from the NW and N with a cross-offshore wind from the south. The period is still short at 6 seconds, and energy is moderate (138 to 141). It might be a tiny window if you're desperate, but the swell direction is NW and N, while the bay's optimum direction is NW, so it's not a perfect match.
After that, the surf drops back to tiny, clean but tiny, 0.7ft to 1ft. The whole period is pretty bleak. There are no standouts here. The bay is fairly consistent, so normally it won't stay this poor for long. Forecasts can change.
