The Lowdown
Right, gather round, me hearties. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ at Te Ikaamaru Bay over the next few weeks.
I’m not gonna sugar-coat it: this outlook is a tough one. The first proper surf worth paddling out for doesn’t show its face until Friday the 24th of July, and even then, it’s a bit of a wildcard. Before that, we’ve got a solid stretch of flat, gutless days with poor conditions. Tuesday the 21st through Thursday the 23rd offer a few tiny scraps of swell, but the wind is either cross-on or onshore, and the energy is pathetic – we’re talking single-digit numbers on the energy scale. You’d be better off polishing your wax collection.
The standout, and I mean *the* only real pulse of the whole run, is on the morning of Tuesday the 29th of July. The swell pushes up to 6 ft from the NW, with a period of 6 seconds. Now, that period is short, so it’s gonna be a bit crumbly, but the energy jumps to a solid 224 (moderate wave energy). The wind is a light cross-on from the N at 6 mph, which will put a bit of texture on the face but it’s still rideable. This is a beginner-friendly break, so that 6 ft will be a fun, pushy wave for the less experienced lot. The swell direction – NW – is exactly what Te Ikaamaru Bay likes to see. Tuesday afternoon sees similar size at 5 ft, but the wind picks up to 12 mph, making it choppier.
Before that, on Friday the 24th, we get a bigger, messier pulse. The morning brings 6 ft from the N, but it’s crossed with a near gale at 31 mph, which is just blown-out chaos. The afternoon drops to 3 ft. Not worth the drive.
The water temperature is sitting at 54°F, which is bang on the average for this time of year. No surprises there.
So, here’s the bottom line: if you’re a beginner or just want a gentle paddle, Tuesday the 29th of July morning is your best bet. The rest of the run is a write-off. For the more experienced crew, there’s not much to get excited about. The long-range stuff around the 30th and 31st is tiny and windy. This is a lean period, plain and simple.
Stay patient, and keep an eye on the charts. It tends not to stay this poor for long, and forecasts can change.
