The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. You’re looking at Te Ikaamaru Bay here, and I’m gonna be straight with you—this outlook is a tough one. The 16-day window is mostly a write-off for decent surf. There’s a brief glimmer right at the end, but you’re going to have to be patient.
For the first week and a half, it’s pretty grim. From Monday 17th August all the way through to Wednesday 26th, the conditions are consistently poor. You’ve got a mix of no swell, tiny swell, and when there is a bit of size, it’s getting hammered by strong onshore winds. The wind is mostly from the NW or NNW, which is onshore or cross-onshore here, and it’s often blowing 22 to 40 mph, creating messy, blown-out conditions. The combined energy is weak to moderate at best, with values like 9 (17th), 4 (18th), and 207 (21st Friday morning), but it’s all wind-affected chop. The swell period is short, mostly 5 to 7 seconds, so it’s weak, lumpy, and not worth paddling out for. On Thursday 27th morning, there’s a brief moment where the wind goes glassy, with 5 ft of NW swell (period 6 seconds, combined energy 175), but it’s rated as “surfable but very ordinary.” That’s as close to a highlight as we get for a long time, but it’s nothing to get excited about.
The real standout, if you can call it that, is the morning of Monday 31st August. The wind is light offshore from the ESE, clean, and we’ve got 5 ft of NW swell with a period of 6 seconds (combined energy 177). It’s the cleanest, most surfable window in the whole forecast. The water temperature is 56°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a small comfort. The break is rated as beginner-friendly and fairly consistent, but it’s also “sometimes” crowded, so you might have some company. The swell direction from the NW is just about right, as it’s exposed to that direction. It’s not big, it’s not long-period, but it’s the only time you’ll get clean, rideable waves.
After that, it’s back to poor conditions for the first couple of days of September. So, honestly, if you’re keen, target that Monday 31st August morning. Everything else in this 16-day run is a hard pass.
