Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what we’ve got coming down the pipe.

Well, I gotta be straight with you – right now there isn't a single day in this 16-day window that I’d point my board at. The whole stretch from July 7th all the way through July 22nd is a write-off for decent surf. That’s a solid 16-day gap with nothing to offer a paddler. The only break on the cards is Te Ikaamaru Bay, and the poor surf conditions flag is flying the whole time. It’s a tough run, but it happens here.

Right now on July 7th, we’ve got tiny 1ft swell from the NNW with a short period of 8 seconds, and the wind is a fresh SE offshore which would keep it clean, but there’s just no energy – combined swell energy is only (33). The water temp is sitting at 56°, which is about average for this time of year with a slight anomaly of 1°. That’s not the problem, the problem is the waves just aren’t there.

Then things get properly grim from July 8th and 9th with southerly gales blowing 43 mph and no swell at all. July 10th brings a tiny 0.3ft groundswell with a very long 18 second period, but the southerly wind is still howling at 28 mph, and the energy is weak (12). That's not surfable.

We see a little pulse of swell around July 13th and 14th, with waves pushing up to 6ft on the morning of July 14th, but the wind is onshore from the NNW and the period is a short 6 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (230), but the “poor surf conditions” tag and messy wind make it a no-go. Honestly, on a day like that, with that strong onshore wind and a beach break setup, it looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

The second week fades again into flatness, with mostly cross-off winds and zeros across the board. By July 20th, Monday morning, we get glassy conditions from the WSW, but there’s no swell. Zero. It’s flat calm.

So, the bottom line: nothing to get excited about for the next 16 days. But don’t lose hope – the breaks here are fairly consistent on the whole, so it tends not to stay this poor for long. Forecasts can change, and we might see something line up later. Keep an eye on it.

Rusty.
