The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s brewing for Te Ikaamaru Bay.
I’m going to level with you – this 16-day stretch is a real mixed bag. The first week and a half is pretty much a bust. There’s a long gap of about 8 days with poor surf conditions and strong, messy winds that’ll keep things flat or blown out. The water temp is sitting at 56°F, which is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real chance of something decent comes on the morning of Wednesday, 26 August. The wind swings around from the SSE at 16 mph, blowing cross-off, and we’ve got a 6 ft swell from the NNW. The combined energy is moderate at 260. It’s not perfect, but it’s the first time we see "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions" – which is a step up from a total washout. The winds are offshore through the afternoon, so it’ll be clean, but the swell period is short at 6 seconds, so don’t expect any real power.
After that, the wind gets nasty again, and we’re back into the doldrums. The one standout in the whole period is actually the morning of Sunday, 30 August. We’ve got a solid 10 ft swell from the NW, with a period of 8 seconds and a massive combined energy of 1070 – that’s strong wave energy. The wind is from the SSE at 34 mph, but it’s cross-off, so the face will be clean. However, this is serious size. At over 8 ft, this is expert territory only. It’s going to be a heavy, powerful wave, and it could be too much for the average surfer. The period is moderate, so it’s not a classic groundswell, but there’s plenty of grunt.
If you’re a beginner, or even an intermediate, I’d say give this a miss. The setup at Te Ikaamaru Bay is fairly exposed, and with that much power and strong cross-off wind, it’s going to be a wild ride. For the experienced crew, the morning of the 30th is the only real window. The rest of the forecast is mostly a mix of onshore slop, flat spells, and gusty winds.
So, keep your eyes on the 30th of August, but don’t hold your breath for the rest. Sometimes the forecast changes, and this area can turn around, but right now it’s looking pretty bleak. Hang in there.
