The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Tough run of it for Te Ikaamaru Bay. We’re looking at a long, dry stretch with barely a ripple worth paddling for. The whole 16-day window is almost a write-off.
The first spot with any pulse at all comes Monday morning, August 24th. The swell is tiny at 2ft from the NW with a period of 8 seconds, and combined wave energy is weak at 102. The wind is glassy from the SW, which is a major positive for clean conditions. But it’s “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” – small, weak, and just not worth getting excited about. The water is warm though, sitting at 55°, which is about average for the time of year here.
After that, it’s back to poor surf with strong onshore winds and blown-out slop for the rest of the week and into the next. There’s a big spike of energy—1320 by Sunday, August 23rd—but it’s blown out with 31 mph onshore winds and 10ft of messy, short-period swell. That’s too big for beginners and only for experts in the right setup, but with that wind, it’s unsurfable.
The only other faint glimmer is Monday, September 1st, early morning. We get a tiny 3ft, short-period (4 seconds) N windswell, with glassy wind from the E. Again, combined energy is puny at 47. It’s clean, but you’d be fighting for a knee-high lump.
The rest of the forecast is dominated by strong, cross-onshore gales or fresh offshore winds that blast over barely-there swells. The end of the second week shows tiny 0.3ft, long-period groundswell (15-16 seconds) with clean wind, but that’s no use for a wave. Given that Te Ikaamaru Bay is a fairly exposed beginner break, this kind of blank run is more normal for this area. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a board on the rack kind of fortnight.
Rusty.
