The Lowdown
Right, mate, Rusty here. I've had a good look at the surf forecast for Te Ikaamaru Bay, and I gotta be straight with you – it's a tough one.
The outlook through the whole 16-day window is a real dry spell. There's nothing on the table that I'd call a surfable option. The forecast just keeps throwing up "poor surf conditions" day after day. The first chance for a wave comes on Tuesday the 14th of July, but it's a messy 5 ft swell from the NNW with a short, weak 6-second period (combined energy of 179) and a strong onshore breeze at 25 mph. That's a write-off.
We then see a long gap of nothing but onshore junk and flat spells. The wind swings offshore or goes glassy a few times, like Friday the 17th and Sunday the 19th, but there's simply no swell to go with it. It's a classic case of clean conditions but no waves.
The water temperature is sitting at 54°, which is normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
For a beginner-friendly spot, anything over 5 ft gets too big, but we never even get a clean wave at that size. The only faint glimmer is a tiny 0.3 ft, long-period groundswell from the NW on the 26th of July, but with a 15-second period, it's too weak and too straight for a beach break setup. The combined energy is a measly 9.
Honestly, the best thing I can say is that the conditions look more interesting for a kite session than a paddle surf, given the strong onshore winds that do pop up. But for surfing, there's nothing to recommend. This sort of long blank run is more normal for the area when the swell windows don't line up.
Stay patient, and keep an eye on those forecasts. Things can change.
Rusty.
