The Lowdown
Alright, mate, Rusty here again. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are a total loss for any decent surf around here. Te Ikaamaru Bay is the only spot in the running, and it’s just not happening. We’ve got a solid 16-day window, but it starts with a brutal gap of about ten days where there’s absolutely nothing to get excited about. The combined swell energy is zero for the first four days, which is as dead as it gets.
From Thursday the 22nd through to Sunday the 25th, a bit of energy finally shows up, with combined swell readings hitting moderate to strong levels, like 381 on Saturday the 22nd. But don’t let those numbers fool you. The wind is howling onshore and onshore – we’re talking a near gale out of the NNW at 30 mph on the Saturday – making for a total mess. The swell is from the NW, which isn’t its optimum, and the period is a short and choppy 7 seconds. This isn’t a surf forecast; it’s a warning for beginners and a write-off for everyone else. If you’re a kitesurfer, this setup might look interesting, but for paddle surfing, it’s a hard no.
After that mess, we get a little hope on Saturday the 29th. The morning has some clean conditions with a cross-off breeze and a 6 ft NW swell (period 7 sec, combined energy 322) – that’s strong energy. It’s a marginal forecast, but it’s the only chance you’ll have. The water temp is 56°, which is about average for this time of year. But it’s still not great, and the afternoon drops off. Crowds are possible here, so if you’re desperate, that morning is your only window.
The following week is a complete dud again. From the 1st of September onwards, we’re back to tiny, weak swell and, for the most part, clean but empty conditions. It’s a classic autumn blank run for this area. The forecasts can change, so keep an eye out, but for now, it’s time to tune the board and wait.
Rusty.
