The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, this time in feet and miles.
Let’s be real – this is a tough stretch. There’s a long, quiet run ahead with barely a ripple for the next couple of weeks. The only break with any real hope is Tairua Beach, and even that’s a waiting game.
For the first week, from Monday the 24th of August through to Sunday the 30th, it’s almost flat. Tiny waves – mostly around 0.3ft to 1ft – with combined energy barely breaking into double digits (14 to 70). The wind is mostly clean or cross-offshore, which is a tease, because there’s no swell to work with. Poor surf conditions day after day. Not worth suiting up.
Monday the 31st of August finally shows a flicker. The morning is still clean but small (2ft, NE swell, 10-second period, combined energy of 61). The afternoon, though, is the real window – the wind goes glassy, dead calm, with that same 2ft NE swell at 10 seconds and combined energy of 58. The wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” That’s our first real chance. It’s still tiny, but glassy conditions at Tairua Beach are a treat for beginners. The swell direction (NE) is exactly what the spot wants, so if you’re learning or just want a peaceful session, that Monday afternoon is your best bet.
After that, it drops right off again. Tuesday the 1st of September through to Tuesday the 8th of September is more of the same – tiny 0.7ft to 2ft waves, mostly poor surf conditions, and a lot of onshore or cross-onshore wind. The combined energy stays weak, mostly in the 10 to 73 range. There’s a couple of “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” on the 2nd of September (Wednesday morning and afternoon) with 2ft ENE swell and clean cross-offshore wind, but it’s still super small. Not a standout, just a maybe for a longboard or a foil.
If you’re not a beginner or desperate for a splash, there’s not much to get excited about. Water temp is about average for this time of year. Tairua Beach can be fun when it’s working, but this is a long, flat spell. It’s one of those times where you either grab a longboard and enjoy the glassy moments, or you wait for the next proper swell. Forecasts can always change, but right now, the Monday 31st afternoon is the only real highlight. Everything else is a skip.
Rusty.
