The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break down the next couple of weeks for Tairua Beach. It’s a quiet stretch, no doubt about it. We’ve got plenty of days where the ocean is barely moving, and even when a little swell shows up, the conditions aren’t really doing us any favours.
The first time you might want to grab your board is Tuesday, July 21st. There’s a weak 3ft easterly swell with a short period of 6 seconds, and the combined energy is low at 62. The morning has a light cross-offshore breeze, so it’s rideable, but it’s pretty ordinary. The afternoon goes glassy, but the swell drops to only 2ft.
Then it’s a real dry spell. From Wednesday, July 22nd right through to Friday, August 1st, we’re looking at tiny waves—mostly 1ft to 2ft, with very little energy. A few mornings are glassy, like Monday, July 28th and Wednesday, July 29th, but with no swell, it’s just a flat, clean ocean. Not worth the trip.
The first hint of something decent comes on Sunday, August 2nd. We’ve got a 2ft easterly swell, but the period is a nice 14 seconds, so it’s a proper groundswell. The combined energy is 102 (moderate), and the wind is light, going glassy in the afternoon. The longer period means the waves will have a bit more shape and push, even if they’re small. It’s surfable, but not a standout.
Then on Monday, August 3rd, we get a similar setup: 2ft from the northeast with a 14-second period, and the combined energy is 132. The wind is light offshore from the southwest, so the faces will be clean. Again, it’s small, but the long period makes it worth a look for a beginner.
There’s no real standout session here. The best bet is probably the glassy afternoon on Sunday, August 2nd—tiny but clean, with the long-period swell giving it the best possible shape. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there. If you’re keen for a paddle, that’s your window.
Otherwise, it’s a long, flat stretch. Tairua Beach is fairly exposed, but with swell this small, you’re just not going to get a ride. The crowds are only “sometimes” a problem, and with no surf, you’ll have the place to yourself.
