Table - best surf conditions forecast for Tairua Beach over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here, let's take a look at what Tairua Beach (Coromandel) has got cooking for us over the next couple of weeks.
We're looking at a real slow burner for the first week, to be honest. The first half of this 16-day window is pretty flat and uninspiring, with hardly anything worth paddling out for. We've got a bit of a lull from now until the end of the first week with only tiny, ordinary waves and hardly any energy behind them. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing wild to report there.
Things start to get interesting around Friday the 24th of July. That morning we’ve got a clean 5ft swell rolling in from the ENE, with a period of 10 seconds, giving us moderate wave energy (376). The wind is a light offshore from the SW, which is going to keep the surface glassy. The real standout, though, is Friday afternoon. The wind goes completely glassy, swell sticks at a clean 5ft from the ENE, and the period bumps up to 11 seconds, pushing the energy up to a solid 437. That is the pick of the entire forecast; clean, lined-up waves with that long-period groundswell feel. It won't be massive, but it'll be quality for sure.
Then we get a spike on Monday the 27th of July, but it comes with a catch. The morning has a glassy 6ft swell from the north, and the energy is moderate (301), which would be fun for stronger surfers. But – and it's a big but – that period is short, only 6 seconds. It’s going to be a bit crumbly and fat. The afternoon turns into a choppy mess with an 8ft NNW windswell, way too big for beginners and really just for the experienced crew, though the cross-onshore wind will make it ugly.
So your best bet is clear as day: the afternoon of Friday the 24th of July. That's the one to circle on the calendar. The rest of the second week is mostly smaller, with cleaner but weaker swells. Tuesday the 28th is a write-off with howling onshore winds.
Keep your expectations low for the first week. It’s a flat spell, plain and simple. The energy just isn't there until we get to that Friday.
Rusty.
