The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Tairua Beach. I’ll be straight with you – the next week or so is a real scratch. We’re talking a long dry spell before anything worth paddling out for shows up.
Right now and for the next several days, it’s pretty flat. We’re talking tiny little waves – nothing above 2ft – and the energy is weak. On Wednesday the 19th of August, the swell’s only 0.7ft from the east with a 10-second period and the combined swell energy is a measly 17. The wind is cross-off but there’s just nothing to ride. Thursday the 20th morning you get a bit of a lift to 2ft from the east, 9-second period, and the wind goes offshore from the southwest. It’s clean, but the energy is only 55 – still very ordinary. The afternoon glass off is lovely to look at, but not for surfing.
This doldrum pattern sticks around right through to Monday the 24th. Swell barely cracks 2ft, wind stays cross-off or cross, and the combined energy sits under 70 every time. It’s the kind of week where you’d be better off checking the kite scene if the breeze picks up. The water temperature is running about average for the time of year at 59°F.
Finally, on Friday the 28th, we see a pulse of energy. The swell climbs to 4ft from the north-northwest on Friday afternoon, but it comes with a short 6-second period and fresh cross-onshore wind at 19 mph. Combined energy hits 110 – moderate – but the conditions are lumpy and bumpy. The morning of Saturday the 29th is a little better: 3ft from the north-northwest, 6-second period, 101 energy, and the wind is a light cross breeze. Still not a standout.
The best chance we get in this entire 16-day window is on Thursday the 3rd of September. The morning session looks the pick. Swell builds to 5ft from the east-northeast with a 7-second period and the wind is a gentle cross-off from the south-southwest at 9 mph. Combined energy is 353 – moderate to strong – and conditions are clean. That’s the one you want to circle on the calendar. It’s still a week and a half away, so treat it as a promising prospect rather than a guarantee. The afternoon sees the wind swing light cross, but the energy drops a bit.
Through the rest of that second week, there’s some size but the wind stays fresh or moderate and the quality doesn’t line up. The water temp anomaly wasn’t supplied for those later days, but the earlier reading was normal for winter.
So to sum it up: Tairua Beach is a beginner-friendly, fairly exposed spot, but it’s mostly going to be a waiting game. Don’t bother before Saturday the 29th, and pin your hopes on the morning of Thursday the 3rd of September – that’s the standout. Crowds are possible here sometimes.
Rusty.
