The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. I’ve been staring at the charts for Tairua Beach and, to be honest, it’s a bit of a slow burn for the next couple of weeks. The swell energy is just not showing up in any meaningful way for a while.
The first real chance of anything surfable doesn’t appear until Monday, the 31st of August. Before that, we’re looking at a long, dry spell with tiny waves and poor conditions. From Sunday the 23rd right through to Sunday the 30th, you’re staring at flat, messy, or tiny surf. There’s a little bump on the 29th with some moderate energy (127) and a clean cross-offshore wind, but the wave height is only 4 ft and the period is a short 7 seconds, so it’s not going to hold up.
Finally, on Monday afternoon the 31st, we scrape into “surfable” territory. The morning is still a write-off, but by the afternoon Tairua Beach picks up a tiny 2 ft swell from the NE, with a period of 10 seconds. The wind will be a clean, moderate offshore from the WSW, so the surface will be glassy. The energy is weak though, only 62. It’s not a standout, just a glimmer of hope after a long flat spell.
The next glimmer comes on Thursday, the 3rd of September, in the afternoon. Again, it’s small – 2 ft from the NNW – but with a slight air and clean conditions, it’s enough for a longboard or a foiler. Energy is still very low at 59.
The only proper pulse of energy in the whole 16-day window is on Friday, the 4th of September. We see a jump up to 5 ft in the morning, and 5 ft in the afternoon, both from the NNW with a moderate cross-shore wind. The combined energy hits 199 and then 256 – moderate wave energy, finally! But here’s the kicker: that cross-shore wind is going to put a cross-chop on the face. So while the size is there, the quality is going to be messy. Period is short at 7 seconds, so it’ll be a lumpy, bumpy affair. It’s the biggest swell of the forecast, but not necessarily the best surf.
Honestly, if you’re desperate for a paddle, Monday the 31st afternoon or Thursday the 3rd afternoon are your only real shots. The 4th of September has the size, but expect a fight with the wind.
Signing off,
Rusty
