The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what’s in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, it’s going to be a long, flat spell for Tairua Beach. For the next week or so, we’re looking at barely a ripple. There’s really nothing worth paddling out for. The water temp is sitting right where it should be for this time of year, about 60°F, so that’s normal at least.
We’ve got a bit of a blank run here. From now, right through the 20th of July, the swell is tiny and the energy is just not there. It’s going to be a quiet period, and that’s just how it goes around here sometimes. Don’t sweat it, these things don’t last forever.
Friday the 17th offers a tiny bump to 2 ft from the east, but with a 16 second period, real long-period groundswell. That kind of period is great for shape, but for a beach break like Tairua, that long gap between sets might make it feel even smaller. The wind turns offshore on the Friday afternoon, clean from the southwest, but the energy is still pretty weak (133 combined energy). It’s rideable but ordinary.
The stand-out, and the one to keep an eye on, arrives right at the end of the outlook, on Tuesday the 29th of July. The morning shows some proper size, 7 ft from the north, with clean offshore wind from the southwest. The wave energy (1087) is strong, real strong. This is expert territory at that height, but the conditions are set up beautifully. The only thing is, this is 13 days out, so keep that in the back of your mind—it’s promising but not locked in yet. The Wednesday afternoon will still be good for the more experienced crew, dropping to 5 ft but still clean.
So, hang tight through the doldrums. That last Wednesday is the one that’s got my attention.
Stay salty,
Rusty
