The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – the start of this run is a bit of a slow burner. We’ve got a few days of tiny, weak surf, but the wind is looking good, so it’s not a total write-off. The first proper chance to get wet comes this Friday afternoon, July 17th, at Tairua Beach. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, fairly exposed to the swell, and it’s breaking pretty consistently.
Friday afternoon, we’re looking at a tiny 2ft easterly swell. The period is a super long 16 seconds, which is proper groundswell energy. That long period means the waves will have shape, but don’t expect much power. The combined energy is weak at 138, so it’s a gentle one. The wind is a light offshore from the WSW, so the conditions will be clean and glassy. Water temp is sitting at 59°, which is spot on for the time of year.
Saturday the 18th stays tiny with 1ft waves from the ESE, but the wind is light and clean both morning and afternoon. It’s surfable but very ordinary. Sunday the 19th is even smaller – 1.0ft – and the wind is a moderate offshore, but the swell is too weak to do much with. We’ve got a gap here of poor surf through Monday the 20th as well.
Tuesday the 21st sees a little bump in size – 3ft from the east – but the period drops to a short 6 seconds. That’s windswell, so it’ll be a bit messy and choppy. Not great. Wednesday through the end of the month is mostly flat with tiny 0.3ft to 0.7ft waves. The wind stays offshore, so the water will be glassy, but there’s just no swell to work with.
Then we hit the end of the month. Thursday the 30th of July, the swell starts to build quickly. We’re seeing 4ft to 4ft from the east, but the wind is a fresh cross-onshore from the NNE, and the periods are still short at 7-8 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 302, which is moderate wave energy, but the wind is gonna make it lumpy and messy. This one is looking more like a windy day out than a classic surf. Friday the 31st sticks with similar size (3ft to 4ft) and strong cross-shore winds, so it’s still a chop-fest.
The best of the entire run, if you can wait, is Saturday the 1st of August. We’ve got a clean 3ft easterly swell with a period of 9 seconds. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the WNW, and the combined energy is a moderate 134. The surf is clean and the conditions are good. It’s the only standout in the whole window. Crowds are possible at Tairua Beach, so get there early if you can.
Overall, a long stretch of not much, with one decent window on August 1st. Enjoy the glassy mornings, even if the waves are small.
Rusty.
