The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and listen up. It’s Rusty here, and I’ve stared at the charts for Tairua Beach. Gotta be straight with you—this 16-day window is a tough one. We’re looking at a long, flat spell before anything worth paddling out for shows up.
Right now, the water temp is sitting pretty average for this time of year, nothing to write home about.
For the first week and a half, it’s grim. From now through to the end of August, the swell is tiny—mostly 0.3 ft to 2 ft—with weak energy readings (31 to 18). The winds are light and variable, sometimes offshore, but there’s just no push to the waves. We’re talking “poor surf conditions” day after day. It’s a long stretch of flatness, so don’t even bother checking the cam.
We get a bit of a pulse building around the 28th of August, with swell hitting 5 ft to 6 ft, but that’s accompanied by a nasty 19 mph cross-onshore wind from the north. The energy is moderate (204 to 442), but the conditions are lumpy and messy. That’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a clean paddle session.
The real standout, and the only one I’d circle on the calendar, is Friday, the 4th of September. The morning session at Tairua Beach looks like a proper little window. We’ve got a 8 ft swell from the north, with a 7-second period, pushing a strong energy reading of 990. The wind will be a light offshore from the WSW at just 6 mph, making for clean, groomed faces. This is a bigger swell, over 8 ft, so it’s really only for the experienced crew. Beginners should sit this one out. The quality is expected to be very good, and with the offshore wind, it’ll be a rare treat. The crowd factor is “sometimes,” so you might have a few friends out, but it won’t be a circus.
After that, Saturday the 5th drops off quickly into small, ordinary surf again.
So, in short: endure the flat spell, and if you’re an expert, make a beeline for Tairua Beach on the morning of the 4th of September. That’s your shot.
