Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let's get into it. We’re looking at Tairua Beach for the next couple of weeks, and it's a bit of a mixed bag. The water temperature here is sitting at 60°F, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year, nothing unusual.
The upcoming period starts with a bit of a quiet spell. Sunday morning on the 5th of July offers some hope with swell around 5ft from the NNE, but the period is short, only 7 seconds. The wind is a light cross-offshore, so it'll be clean, but that short-period swell won’t have much punch. The combined energy is moderate at 435. It’s surfable for a beginner, but it’s nothing to write home about.
Things get a bit rough on Monday the 6th and Tuesday the 7th. The wind picks up strong from the north, swinging onshore and cross-onshore, making for messy, choppy conditions. The swell jumps up, but with the poor wind, it’s not worth paddling out for a paddle surfer.
Then we get a real standout. Wednesday morning the 8th of July. This is the pick of the period. The wind swings offshore from the WSW, light at 6 mph, which will really clean things up. The swell is a solid 5ft but coming from the east with a 10-second period, which is a nice groundswell. The combined energy is 1105 – that’s strong energy, you’ll feel it. It’s good for intermediate surfers; maybe a bit much for beginners. The east swell direction is right on the money for Tairua Beach’s optimum. This is the morning to be out there.
The rest of the week fades. Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th drop right off in size, with diminishing energy (down to 127 and 104). It’s clean but tiny.
The following week is pretty bleak. From around the 11th through to the 19th of July, the swell is tiny, mostly under 3ft, with weak energy readings often below 200. There’s a blip on the 14th of July with a 4ft swell and a very long 14-second period, but the wind is a messy cross-onshore, and the conditions are poor. That long period will break straight at a beach break, so not ideal.
There is one more glimpse of hope right at the end of the outlook. Monday morning the 20th of July. We get a clean, offshore breeze from the WSW at 16 mph. The swell is only around 4ft from the NE with an 8-second period, but the combined energy is moderate at 386. The wind will be fresh, but it’s offshore, so expect clean, lined-up waves. It’s a promising finish, but we’re far out, so treat that as a bit of a long-range whisper.
Overall, Wednesday the 8th of July is the clear winner. Get out there for the morning session.
