The Lowdown
Alright, mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what the next couple of weeks are serving up for Tairua Beach.
To be honest, the start of this outlook is a bit of a fizzer. We’re looking at a stretch of days with hardly any surf on offer. The first week is a real write-off for anything decent; we’re talking tiny, weak waves that’ll have you staring at the horizon more than paddling for one. You’ll be waiting a while for anything that’s even rideable.
The first real glimmer of hope arrives on the morning of Sunday, the 30th of August. Overnight, a bit of push arrives, but it’s got a cross-shore wind on it, messing things up. It’s not until that afternoon that things clean up. We see a jump in the swell to 5ft, coming from the NNW, with the west-northwest wind going cross-offshore. The energy reading jumps to 249, which gives it some life. But the period is only 6 seconds, so it’s going to be a bit crumbly and soft. It’s the first proper surfable option, but it’s not going to be one for the memory bank. This spot (Tairua Beach) is fairly consistent, but a blank run like this is more normal for the area when the swell direction is off.
Then, Monday the 31st keeps things ticking over. The swell drops back a bit to 3ft, but the period lengthens to 10 seconds, which is good to see. The wind is a light W, blowing cross-off and keeping the surface clean. The energy is at 128, so there’s a bit more purpose behind it. It won’t be big, but a longboard or a fish would be your friend. It’s a much nicer, cleaner option than the day before.
After that, we drift back into smaller, less inspiring conditions for the start of September. A few knee-high days and some blustery winds, especially that Thursday with a strong breeze making things messy. The swell is small and the periods are short, so there’s not a whole lot to get excited about.
Looking into the second week, the forecast is just too far out for any solid calls. The models are hinting at a little pulse of energy around Saturday the 5th of September, with the swell building to 3ft from the NNW, but the wind's set to be cross-shore, which will chop it up. It's promising but not certain this far out. Tairua will need a decent groundswell with a longer period to really get going. Keep an eye out, but don’t book the day off work just yet.
So, if you’re keen to get wet, the Sunday afternoon (the 30th) through Monday (the 31st) looks like your best shout for some clean-ish, rideable waves. It’s not going to be epic, but it’s something. Everything else is just a waiting game.
Rusty.
