Table - best surf conditions forecast for Tairua Beach over the next 16 days.
Alright, grab a coffee, let's talk Tairua Beach.
To be straight with you, the next week and a half is looking pretty flat and quiet down there. We've got a solid run of days where the surf is just too small to get excited about – think waist-high at best, mostly smaller, and with winds that aren't doing us any favours. The water temp is sitting right on average for this time of year at 60°F, so no surprises there.
We start off Monday, July 13th, with a tiny 1ft easterly windswell. It's glassy in the morning, which is nice to look at, but with the combined energy only sitting at 38, there's just no push.
Tuesday the 14th gets a little bigger, up to around 3ft from the north, but that's a short-period windswell with a lot of cross-shore wind on it. It's messy. Honestly, not one to paddle for.
Wednesday and Thursday the 15th and 16th are back down to tiny 1ft waves, though conditions do clean up nicely as it goes glassy and cross-offshore. Still, you could count the waves on one hand.
Now, there is a glimmer of hope. Friday the 17th of July. The swell stays small, only 1ft to 2ft, but it's coming from the ESE with a long period of 16 seconds. That's groundswell energy, and the combined energy jumps to 130 (moderate) in the afternoon. The wind goes solid offshore from the WSW at 12 mph, which will groom it nicely. It'll be clean, but it's still knee to thigh high. A fun little wave if you're on a log or a fish, but nothing to drive for.
Saturday the 18th sees those persistent but small offshores. Swell drops back to 1ft from the ESE, with energy at 74. It'll be clean, but still small. The direction suits Tairua's optimum – the NE – but it's just not got any size.
From there, we go into a long, flat spell. From Sunday the 19th right through to Tuesday the 28th, the surf is mostly below 2ft. There are a few pulses, like on Tuesday the 21st where we see 3ft from the ESE with clean winds, but again, the period is a weak 5 seconds. That's just windswell bump. The energy is moderate (80), but the quality won't be there. It's going to be lumpy and weak.
The true standout – and I say this with a heavy heart because it's still small – is Friday 17th and Saturday 18th of July. The offshore winds and that long-period groundswell make it the cleanest option in the whole forecast. For a beginner, it'll be safe and easy, especially Saturday when the wind drops. But don't expect barrels. It's really a "work on your technique" kind of day.
Honestly, for the rest of the run, the conditions are poor and small. It's not looking like a good time to paddle. The combined swell energy is very weak for most days. For most of the second week, we're just looking at ankle-slappers with a bit of cross-shore texture.
Keep an eye on the forecasts, because things can change, but right now, there's not much to shout about.
