Alright, let’s talk Tairua Beach. This spot is a beginner-friendly, fairly consistent break that’s exposed to NE swell. Crowds can show up sometimes, so you might have company. The water temperature sits at 16° which is normal for this time of year – nothing out of the ordinary.
To be honest, the start of July is pretty quiet. Monday the 6th and Tuesday the 7th are a write‑off – lumpy cross‑shore winds, marginal conditions, and messy swell. The first decent surf doesn’t roll in until Wednesday afternoon, July 8. That afternoon we get a nice offshore breeze from the SW, clean lines of around 1.5m (about 5 ft) from the ESE with a 10‑second period. The combined wave energy is moderate (578), and although the direction isn’t exactly the preferred NE, the clean conditions make it a solid pick for beginners. Thursday morning, July 9, also offers clean 1.1m (about 4 ft) E swell at 10 seconds with light cross‑off wind – smaller but still surfable (combined energy 275). After that, things go flat and ordinary from Friday through to the middle of the next week. There’s a big spike on Thursday July 16 – 3‑3.5m (10‑12 ft) of NE swell – but it’s cross‑onshore and way too big for this break; only for experts if anyone’s brave enough, and even then the quality is questionable. The real standout comes on Friday July 17 morning: offshore SW breeze, 1.7m (about 6 ft) of ENE swell at 9 seconds, clean and glassy in the afternoon with a light easterly going glass. Combined energy 520 – moderate, fun waves. After that, it fades again into tiny, poor conditions for the rest of the outlook.
So the two windows to aim for are Wednesday afternoon July 8 and Friday morning July 17. The rest? Not much to write home about.
