The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at the upcoming surf. Let's be straight up, we've got a long stretch of quiet days ahead before anything really gets going. The first recommendation pops up on Tuesday, 18 August, but it's pretty underwhelming.
That Tuesday morning at Tairua Beach, we're looking at a small 0.7m (2ft) easterly swell, but with a short 9 second period. The wind is a gentle offshore from the SSW, which is a bonus for a clean surface, but the energy is weak, so it's really just small, weak waves. Water temp is sitting at 60°F, which is a touch warmer than average for the time of year, nothing too wild though. It's surfable if you're a beginner or just want to get wet, but for anyone with a bit of experience, it's not going to get the heart pumping. The afternoon cleans up too but the swell drops to 0.5m (2ft).
From Wednesday the 19th right through to Saturday the 29th of August, it's a pretty grim run. The swell drops to barely a ripple most days, and even when it pushes up to 1.1m (4ft) on Sunday the 23rd afternoon, the period is a pathetic 6 seconds. Wind is mostly cross or cross-off, so it's clean but gutless. There's a 10 day gap here where the surf just isn't worth paddling out for.
Now, there's a couple of days at the end of the month that look a bit more interesting, but they come with big caveats. On Saturday morning, 29 August, we get a 1.1m (4ft) swell from the ENE with a 5 second period. The winds are a moderate offshore from the WSW, keeping it clean, but the wave quality is still only ordinary.
The real standout, and I mean *the* standout of this whole 16-day window, is showing up on Tuesday, 1 September. We've got a solid 3.5m (12ft) swell from the north with a 9 second period, coming from the optimum direction. There's plenty of power here. The issue? The forecast says it's predicted to be too big for this break. This is not for beginners, and unless you're an expert, this one is likely a watch-from-the-beach session. Winds are light and variable, so it might be manageable, but it's a risky call this far out. Treat this as a promising but uncertain prospect.
So, to wrap it up: the next week and a half is a write-off. Your only real window for a wave is that Tuesday morning (18th) if you're desperate for a small, clean ride, or keeping a very, very close eye on that big swell on the 1st of September, but only if you've got the skill for it.
This is Rusty, signing off.
