The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the pipeline for us over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be honest, the immediate picture is a bit of a flat spell, but we’ve got a flash of something a bit more interesting further out to keep the hope alive.
We’re starting off with a long, quiet stretch. From now through to the 24th of July, it’s pretty much a write-off. The swell is tiny, mostly in the 0.3 ft to 1.0 ft range, and the energy is weak (combined energy figures from just 5 to 148). The wind is often okay, but there’s just no power in the water to push a proper wave. You’ll be looking at a lot of knee-high bumps if you’re desperate for a paddle. This is a solid gap of nearly ten days where there’s simply nothing to recommend for a proper surf.
The one break we’ve got to talk about is Tairua Beach. Water temp is sitting about average for the time of year at 59°F.
Now, the calendar flips to the 25th of July, and things get interesting. That Saturday morning is your standout. The swell jumps right up to 6 ft from the NNW, with a combined energy of 341 – that’s a solid pulse of moderate energy. The wind is a cross-off from the west at 9 mph, which will keep it fairly clean. The swell direction is a close match for the optimum NE. This is a damn sight better than anything we’ve seen. The afternoon of the 25th gets a bit bigger (6 ft) and the energy ramps right up to 653, but the wind picks up to 12 mph and the period is a short 8 seconds, so it might get a bit lumpy and unruly.
After that burst, the 26th goes glassy but flat again, and the following week keeps the energy low. There’s a pulse on the 30th of July with a 2 ft to 3 ft E swell and a period of 11 seconds, and the energy is back up to 234, but the wind is more cross or cross-off from the NW. It’s surfable, but it’s nothing like that Saturday morning peak.
For a beginner-friendly spot like Tairua Beach, the 6 ft to 6 ft range on the 25th is going to be too big for a learner. It’s more of a fun session for someone with a bit of experience. The best bet is to pencil in that Saturday morning, the 25th of July. It’s a long way off, so the details could shift, but right now, that’s the only proper window of decent, clean surf in the whole 16-day run.
Stay keen, and check back closer to the date.
Rusty.
