The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for the local stretch.
We’re kicking off with a bit of a wait. The first real chance to get wet doesn’t come until Monday, July 20th. For the weekend before that, the swell is just too big and messy to be any fun for paddle surfing. We’re looking at solid 10ft plus swell from the southwest with strong cross-shore winds, making it a real battle. Honestly, that setup on Saturday and Sunday looks more interesting for the kite crew than us.
Now, Monday July 20th is where things start to turn. The swell drops to a much more manageable 7ft from the southwest (14-second period), and the wind swings around to a light easterly. The morning session is looking clean, but the real standout is Monday afternoon. The wind goes glassy, absolutely dead calm, with a 7ft WSW swell. The water temp is sitting at 58°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year. For a beach break, that’s as good as it gets. The combined wave energy is still solid at 1607, so there’s plenty of push. This is the pick of the first week.
Tuesday July 21st morning keeps the good run going with a light offshore breeze from the east and a 5ft SW swell. The energy drops a bit (880), but it’s clean and rideable. Wednesday July 22nd morning is glassy again with a smaller 4ft swell, nice for a longboard or a fun board. Thursday July 23rd morning also offers clean conditions with a 4ft SW swell.
We hit a bit of a rough patch from Friday July 24th through the weekend. The wind gets messy again, and the quality drops right off. Sunday July 26th morning sees a big 10ft SW swell (10-second period) with clean offshore winds, but it’s just too big and powerful for this spot. The energy is huge at 4087. That’s expert-only territory, and even then, it’s a handful.
The outlook for the end of the month and into August is a mixed bag. Monday July 27th and Tuesday July 28th mornings are clean but still holding big 10-13ft swells, again too big for a comfortable paddle. We see a drop in size towards Wednesday July 30th, but the wind and tide are a bit off. The best bet in that second week looks like Saturday August 1st morning. It’s a clean 6ft SW swell with a light offshore breeze and a combined energy of 938. It’s not a monster, but it’s solid, clean, and fun. Keep an eye on that one, though it’s a bit far out, so don’t bank on it just yet.
Rusty.
