The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's get straight into what's comin' down at Port Waikato-Sunset Beach.
We've got a tricky run ahead, with the first half of the outlook being dominated by some seriously heavy swell and iffy winds. The water temp's sitting at 57°, just about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual on that front.
Right now, there's not a lot to get excited about straight away. The first realistic surf action we can start looking at is on Sunday the 30th of August. Even then, it's not a full green light. The morning session shows a 3ft, 18-second groundswell coming from the WSW. That's a very long period, meaning good energy and shape, but with a cross-on wind from the west at 16 mph, it won't be glassy. The combined energy is 1097, which is moderate. It's looking marginal, a bit of a gamble with the tide, but at least the size is manageable.
Monday the 31st of August is a write-off. We're looking at a 15ft monster from the SW with a steady 16 mph cross-on wind. That's only for experts, and even then, the conditions are poor.
The big standout of this whole 16-day window is Thursday the 3rd of September. The morning session is the clear winner. The swell is still big, at 13ft from the WSW, but the wind swings around to lightly offshore from the south at 9 mph. That's a massive plus. The wave comment says "clean," and the combined energy is a massive 11240. This is a powerful, long-period groundswell (14 seconds). This is an expert-only window, make no mistake. The size is too big for most, but for those with the skills, this could be the session of the outlook. The afternoon sees the wind go light onshore, dropping the quality a bit.
After that, the second week of September gets a bit grim. From the 4th onward, the wind stays messy, mostly onshore or strong, and the swell drops off. Friday the 4th of September morning has a 10ft WSW swell, but a 12 mph onshore wind kills it. The 5th and 6th of September see the size drop to a manageable 5ft to 7ft, but the wind is still strong and cross-onshore, causing chop and lumpy conditions. The combined energy drops down below 1300, so it's weak, and the surf is poor. The run into the 7th stays marginal and messy.
So, to sum it up: If you're an experienced surfer, circle Thursday the 3rd of September in the morning. That's your best shot. For everyone else, the run is long and disappointing. Keep an eye on the charts; gaps this big don't tend to last forever.
Rusty.
