Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s cooking at Port Waikato-Sunset Beach for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, there’s no surf worth paddling out for on the first day, but things really kick off from the 7th. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, nothing wild to report there.
Monday the 6th is a write-off with messy 8ft onshore slop and a stiff NE wind, so don’t bother.
Tuesday the 7th is where we get our first real look. Morning has a solid 10ft groundswell out of the WSW with a 15-second period, and clean ESE offshore wind. That’s a decent amount of power (combined energy 3732). But honestly, with that size, it’s expert-only territory – this beach setup will be heavy. The afternoon drops to 8ft but still with clean offshore wind; same call, only for the experienced crew.
Wednesday the 8th keeps the swell pumping, but the wind swings cross-shore. Morning has 8ft from the SW at 13 seconds, but it’s not clean enough for my liking. Afternoon jumps to 10ft with a fresh 35 km/h cross wind – lumpy and choppy, more of a kite session than a surf.
Thursday the 9th is big again – 10ft in the morning, building to 12ft by afternoon from the SSW, with a 13-second period. Combined energy hits 5660 in the arvo. The wind is clean cross-offshore, so the surf will be lined up, but this is serious, powerful stuff. Experts only, and you’ll want to be confident.
Friday the 10th brings the size down a notch. Morning has 10ft with a clean cross-off breeze, still punchy. By the afternoon, the swell eases to 7ft but the period stretches to 17 seconds – that’s very long period groundswell. It might break a bit too straight for the beach, but there’ll be some beautiful, walled-up waves on the sets for those who know where to sit.
Now, Saturday the 11th is worth a serious mention. Morning is glassy with ESE wind at just 5 km/h, and 5ft of SW groundswell at 15 seconds. Combined energy is 1340 – moderate but clean. This is the standout window for moderate-experience surfers: glassy conditions, solid period, manageable size. The afternoon still has clean 5ft waves with a light cross breeze.
Sunday the 12th is another gem. Both morning and afternoon are glassy or clean with offshore wind, 6ft swell at 15-16 seconds from the WSW and SW. This is beautiful, clean, user-friendly surf for intermediate and above. Crowds are a maybe here, but on a day like this, you’ll want to be early.
Monday the 13th holds clean conditions, though the swell drops to 5ft in the morning and 4ft by afternoon. That’s small but fun, especially with glassy conditions in the arvo.
From Tuesday the 14th through to Wednesday the 15th, the swell goes quiet – around 4ft to 6ft, but the wind stays moderate and cross-off. Not much to get excited about, but you could still find a grovelly wave if you’re keen.
Thursday the 16th has 6ft from the NW but with a short 9-second period and onshore wind – not great.
Friday the 17th brings a nice little pulse. Morning has 4ft of 16-second WSW groundswell with gentle offshore E wind (combined energy 1184). It’s small but clean and will have nice shape. The afternoon has 5ft with a 15-second period, also clean. Good for a log or a mid-length.
Saturday the 18th is 6ft but with moderate cross-off wind – a bit bumpy but rideable for those who don’t mind a bit of texture.
Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th are messy – onshore wind and poor conditions. Best to sit those out.
Finally, Tuesday the 21st morning offers a return to glassy conditions, with 5ft of SW groundswell at 14 seconds. Combined energy is 1002 – moderate, clean, and inviting. A solid way to finish the outlook if you can wait that long.
Overall, your best bets are Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th – glassy, clean, moderate swell, and plenty of fun for everyone with a bit of experience.
Rusty.
