The Lowdown
Alright mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s coming up for Port Waikato-Sunset Beach.
The water’s sitting at 58°F, which is pretty much bang on what you’d expect for this time of year – nothing weird going on there.
First real standout is Tuesday morning, August 18th. We’ve got a solid 7ft SW groundswell, with a 14-second period, and the wind is a clean cross-offshore at 9 mph. The water will be glassy and clean – perfect for experienced surfers. The combined energy is moderate (1559), so there’s plenty of push. This is the best window early on.
Tuesday afternoon gets a bit bigger at 7ft SW, but the wind picks up to 12 mph cross-offshore, still clean though. The energy jumps to 2946, so it’s got some grunt, but it’s a bit more of a handful.
Wednesday morning, August 19th, is still clean at 8ft SW with a 12-second period, but the wind is up to 16 mph cross-offshore – it’s getting lumpy. Energy is moderate (1852). Wednesday afternoon drops to 9 mph cross-shore, but it’s a bit messy.
Thursday morning, August 20th, is another cracker. Light SSE wind at 3 mph, cross-offshore, and 7ft SW swell with a 14-second period. Clean as a whistle, energy at 1761. This is prime for anyone who’s got the skills.
From Friday onwards things go downhill. Wind turns onshore or cross-onshore, swell drops, and the conditions get grotty. Friday afternoon is a write-off. Saturday and Sunday, August 22nd and 23rd, are poor – onshore winds, lumpy, and the swell is small or messy. Sunday even has a 19 mph cross-onshore with rain, and the swell period drops to 9 seconds – that’s more of a kite day than a paddle day.
Monday August 24th sees a massive 10ft WSW groundswell with a 16-second period – energy is a massive 4462 – but it’s too big for this break and cross-onshore wind ruins it. That’s expert-only at best, and even then, it’s a gamble.
The next real glimmer is Thursday morning, August 27th. Light offshore wind from the east at 9 mph, 6ft WSW swell, 12-second period, clean conditions. Energy is 1053. It’s a nice, manageable size for experienced surfers, with clean lines. That carries through to Friday morning, August 28th, with 4ft SW swell and offshore wind – gentle and clean, energy at 683. Good for a fun session.
Saturday August 29th morning pops up a 10ft WNW swell with a short 10-second period, but the wind is cross-off and light, so it’s clean. However, that’s too big for the break and the period is short, so it won’t be well-shaped. Energy is 1870.
Towards the end of the window, Tuesday September 1st morning looks promising again – 8ft SW swell, 9-second period, clean cross-off wind at 9 mph, energy 1445. But the afternoon goes huge again with an 12ft SW groundswell, 15-second period, and light cross-onshore wind – too big and messy.
Overall, the best bets are Tuesday morning August 18th and Thursday morning August 20th – clean, decent swell, and proper offshore flow. The rest is either too big, too windy, or too small. Keep an eye on that Thursday morning, it’s a beauty.
