The Lowdown

Righto, let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ at Port Waikato-Sunset Beach. This spot’s an exposed beach setup, so it grabs a lot of energy, but that also means it can get a bit wild. The water temp is sitting at 57°F, which is pretty much normal for this time of year down here, so nothin’ weird goin’ on there.

Straight up, the next few days are a write-off. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are a complete bust – poor conditions, messy winds, and the swell’s either small and weak or just big and lumpy. Nothin’ worth paddlin’ out for. Monday the 24th sees a massive jump in energy – we’re talkin’ 13ft of WSW swell with a combined energy reading of 12692 (that’s strong) – but it’s just too big for this beach. The same story rolls through Tuesday and Wednesday: heaps of swell, plenty of power, but the waves are gonna be a chaotic mess, cross-onshore winds making it choppy. Not a session for the average surfer, and even for the experienced crew, it’s more of a survival mission than a fun day out. Honestly, this stretch from the 24th through the 26th is big and ugly, more suited to kiteboarding than paddling. Then from Thursday 27th right through to Saturday 29th, it’s all marginal – small, weak, and bumpy. A real flat, frustrating run.

Now, there’s a glimmer. Sunday the 30th – we’ve got a 10ft swell, but it’s short-period (8 seconds) and cross-onshore, so it’s still a bit of a mess. It’s flagged as too big for the break anyway, so I’d give it a miss. The real standout in this forecast doesn’t come until Thursday the 3rd of September. That morning, we’ve got 16ft of W swell, ESE winds at 9 mph blowin’ offshore, and the afternoon goes glassy with ESE winds dropping to 3 mph. The combined energy is massive – 6479 then 7429 – but here’s the catch: 16ft is well into expert-only territory. The swell direction (W) is not ideal for the break’s optimum (SW), but the offshore and glassy wind will make for some clean, powerful walls. If you’re a seasoned local and you’ve got the balls, that Thursday is the best on offer, even though it’s a long way out and a bit uncertain. The Friday the 4th of September is also decent – 12ft to 10ft, clean cross-offshore winds – but it’s still big and the wind turns onshore later. After that, the swell drops and we’re back into marginal conditions.

For a tip: keep an eye on Sunday the 6th of September. We’ve got a 7ft to 8ft WSW swell with consistent ESE offshore winds blowing 6-12 mph. That’s clean, manageable for experienced surfers, and the combined energy (1800-2178) is moderate and solid. It’s not a massive day, but for Sunset Beach, that’s the kind of size that lines up and feels good. Swell direction matches the optimum, and the offshore wind will groom it nicely. This is the pick if you want something that’s actually surfable and enjoyable without getting smashed. Crowds are listed as “sometimes” here, so you might have some company, but it won’t be a zoo.

So, overall: the next week is a write-off or just too big and sloppy. The standout is Thursday the 3rd of September for big-wave crew, but the most balanced, quality session looks like Sunday the 6th of September – a solid, clean swell with good wind. Keep the board handy for that one.
