Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s talk about what’s happening at Port Waikato-Sunset Beach over the next couple of weeks. This spot’s a fairly consistent exposed beach that loves a solid SW groundswell, and right now we’ve got a mixed bag – some clean windows, some real size, and a few quiet spells.
First up, Saturday the 4th of July starts off pretty ordinary. There’s a tiny 1.6ft SW groundswell with a nice long 13-second period, and ENE cross-off winds making it clean, but the combined energy is weak at 146 – not much push. You could get a few knee-high runners, but it’s really only for the patient. By Saturday afternoon the wind swings NNE and picks up to 12 mph, turning the ocean into a cross-shore mess with a cross-chop and swell only 2.6ft. I’d skip it.
Sunday the 5th looks a lot more promising, but it’s not perfect. Early morning we see a jump to 6.9ft from the WNW with a short 10-second period, and glassy light WNW offshore at 3 mph. The combined energy is pumping at 1251 – moderate to strong. That’s a proper head-high-plus wave, but the direction is a bit off-optimum (SW is best here) and the period’s short, so expect some lumpy, quick-breaking sections. It’s surfable but not the standout. The afternoon drops to 3.3ft WSW with a long 17-second period, but cross-on NW winds mess up the face.
Monday the 6th of July brings a massive pulse: 14.8ft from the west at 11 seconds in the morning, with combined energy roaring at 6004. That’s a very strong, heavy swell – way too big for this exposed beach break, only for experts with a death wish. Wind is cross-on from the NNW at 13 mph, so it’s choppy on top. The afternoon holds at 13.1ft from the west, 12 seconds, still too extreme for nearly everyone. Not a paddle day – more like a kite day if you’re into that.
Tuesday the 7th of July is the first real standout. Early morning has 9.8ft from the WSW with a juicy 15-second period, clean east offshore at 9 mph. Combined energy is 4248 – very strong – but the swell’s over 8ft, so this is for experienced surfers only. The afternoon drops to a more manageable 8.2ft, still WSW at 15 seconds, with east offshore at 13 mph – moderate offshore but clean. This is excellent surf for those who can handle it: long, powerful lines, good shape, and glassy offshores. Crowds are possible here, so get in early.
Wednesday the 8th sees the swell back off to 6.2ft–6.9ft from the SW, 13–14 seconds, but cross-shore winds (SSW) make it choppy. Not a great call.
Thursday the 9th of July is another little gem. Morning has 6.2ft from the SW at 11 seconds, light east offshore at 6 mph, combined energy 1454 – moderate. Clean conditions, good for intermediates. Afternoon improves with 4.9ft from the WSW at 16 seconds, light SSE cross-off, combined energy 1660. Smooth, clean, long-period lines. This is a solid intermediate session.
Friday the 10th gets a bit blown out – 7.5ft SW at 13 seconds, but southerly wind at 16 mph, even if cross-off, makes for a bumpy ride. Combined energy is 2763 – strong – but the wind’s a problem.
Saturday the 11th of July brings lighter winds again. Morning has 4.6ft SW at 15 seconds, SSE light breeze at 3 mph, combined energy 1272. Clean, fun size. Afternoon similar at 4.6ft,
