The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Port Waikato-Sunset Beach. This is an exposed SW-facing beach, and the water temp is sitting at 58° which is pretty average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The next couple of days are a bit of a write-off, honestly. Wednesday the 19th is marginal with a solid 8ft SW swell but the wind is cross-off or cross, and the wave energy is already strong (1890), but the conditions just aren’t coming together. You’d be battling a moderate breeze and questionable tide.
Now, Thursday the 20th morning is where it starts to get interesting. We’ve got a 7ft SW groundswell with a 14-second period, glassy conditions, and a slight air. That’s clean surf, moderate energy (1761), and it’s the standout of the early period. For experienced surfers, this is the pick of the first week. The afternoon holds up okay too, but the glass is gone.
Friday through Sunday the 21st to 23rd drops right off – onshore winds, dropping swell, and poor conditions. Sunday the 23rd even sees a short-period 8ft W swell with rain and onshore wind – messy, not worth it.
Monday the 24th sees a big long-period WSW groundswell pushing through (16 seconds, 1532 energy), but the wind is cross-on, so it’s only marginal. The afternoon has a larger 8ft swell with 3123 energy but still cross-on breeze. It’s a bit of a tease.
The next real standout is Thursday the 27th morning. A clean 6ft WSW swell, 12-second period, and a light NE cross-off breeze. That’s glassy and clean, with moderate energy (1140). For experienced surfers, this is another good window.
But the one that’s really got me talking is Sunday the 30th morning. A very long-period 5ft WSW groundswell – 18 seconds – with glassy conditions and a slight air. That’s 1702 energy, super clean, and the period is going to make for some beautifully shaped waves at this beach. For experienced surfers, this is a gem.
Then Monday the 31st morning keeps it going: 6ft WSW swell, 15-second period, cross-off ENE breeze, clean, and big energy at 3371. That’s a strong, clean session.
Into the second week, Tuesday the 1st of September sees a big 12ft WSW swell with offshore winds, but that’s too big for this break – expert only, and even then, it’s pushing the limits. Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd settle back into the 6ft to 8ft range with clean offshore winds, making for good, solid sessions for experienced surfers.
So, the best on offer: Thursday the 20th morning for the first clean glassy session, and Sunday the 30th morning for that long-period groundswell with glass – that’s the highlight of the whole outlook. Monday the 31st morning is also a ripper. Crowds are possible sometimes at Sunset Beach, so get in early on those standouts.
