Table - best surf conditions forecast for Port Waikato-Sunset beach over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here, and I've got a good look at what's coming our way for the next couple of weeks at Port Waikato-Sunset Beach. The water's sitting at 58°F, which is pretty much what you'd expect for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
We've got a solid run of surf kicking off this Saturday, July 11th. It's not for the faint-hearted though. The swell is pumping in from the WSW at 6ft, with a very long 15-second period. That's a lot of energy in the water (1456), so it's going to be a powerful, clean beast with that light E wind. This one's for the experienced crew only.
The weekend keeps the goodness coming. Sunday July 12th looks like the real standout of this first week. The swell holds at 6ft from the WSW, still a long 16-second pulse, and the wave energy is cranking (1721). But the kicker is the afternoon: the wind goes completely glassy, dead calm. That's the kind of session that makes you forget about the cold water. Just unbelievable, clean lines.
Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th see the energy drop off a bit. The swell backs down and the winds get messy. On Tuesday, a short-period 8-second windswell from the WNW rolls in with cross-on winds, so the quality will be junk. Give it a miss.
Things get interesting again on Wednesday the 15th. A big new pulse of WSW swell (8ft at 16 seconds) arrives in the afternoon. The energy is enormous (3714), but the wind is a light cross-onshore. It's going to be a lumpy, powerful close-out for most. This is strictly big-wave territory, and even then, it’ll be a battle. Thursday the 16th stays big and nasty with a strong cross-onshore wind, making it look more like a kitesurfing zone than a paddle spot.
There's a long gap of poor conditions through the middle of the week. Hold out until Sunday, July 19th. That’s the second standout. The morning is forecast to be absolutely glassy again, with a solid 7ft WSW groundswell at 15 seconds. The energy is well up there (2069) and those conditions will be epic. Get out early.
After that, the next good window is Friday, July 24th. The morning session is clean with a 6ft SW swell. But the afternoon... the forecast shows a 10ft swell. The report says it might just be too big for the break itself, so keep an eye on it, it could be a wash-out for the average surfer.
The run finishes strong on Saturday, July 25th, with a clean 6ft SW swell and a very long 16-second period in the morning. The energy is pumping (3239), so the experienced guys are in for a treat. The following Sunday (26th) also looks solid and clean.
Basically, if you're experienced, circle July 11th, 12th, 19th, and 25th on your calendar. Those are your golden tickets.
Rusty.
