The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, let’s run through the same outlook for Summerstrand in feet and miles per hour.
Over the next 16 days there’s some proper swell, but a rough start. The water is 61°F, which is about 6°F colder than normal – that’s a big anomaly, so don’t forget your hood.
For Saturday the 22nd, forget it. 28 mph offshore winds from the WSW are blowing out 5ft surf with high wave energy (871). Not worth paddling out.
Sunday the 23rd is the first usable day. Morning has a light 9 mph offshore breeze and 6ft SSW swell with a 12-second period. It’s clean, combined energy is moderate at 724, good for the better surfers.
Monday the 24th is small – 3ft waves with light winds. Good for logging or beginners. Crowds might show.
Tuesday the 25th morning is the big standout for the first week. Clean 7ft SSSW groundswell, 14-second period, 9 mph offshore breeze from the WSW, combined energy at 1697. This is excellent, powerful surf for experienced paddlers. Too big for beginners.
Wednesday the 26th is 8ft of onshore junk and massive energy (4164). This is strictly kite-surfing territory.
Thursday the 27th stays messy. Friday the 28th morning is a gem – 5ft from the south, glassy wind from the ENE at just 3 mph, combined energy at 1120. Clean, smooth, and punchy. That afternoon gets a light cross-onshore chop.
From the 29th to 31st it’s smaller and not as clean, though Sunday the 30th morning brings a 8ft SW swell with 12 seconds, light cross-offshore wind (6 mph), and energy at 1789. Clean and powerful.
In early September, Thursday the 3rd morning stands out – 7ft SSW groundswell with a very long 16-second period, glassy cross-offshore breeze, energy at 1991. Long lines, clean face – a session for the better surfers.
Saturday the 5th again offers 7-7ft surf with moderate offshore winds and strong energy over 1800. Good for the experienced crew.
The last day, Sunday the 6th, is cross-shore and more marginal.
Best bets: Tuesday the 25th, Friday the 28th, Sunday the 30th, and the early days of September. Long-range, keep an eye out, but it looks promising. Summerstrand can get a crew there from time to time.
Rusty.
