The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I gotta be straight with you – the outlook for Salgema over the next couple of weeks is a real tough one to write. We’re looking at a long, quiet stretch ahead.
Right now, the surf is just not happening. The water temp is sitting at 80°, which is about average for this time of year, so the ocean is warm, but that’s where the good news ends.
The first week, from July 19th through to the 25th, is a total write-off. We’ve got a mix of small, weak swell and cross-onshore winds that are keeping things choppy and messy. The combined energy of the swell is moderate at best, hitting around (426) on Sunday morning, but the wind is just ruining any chance of a clean wave. The swell is coming from the SE, but the ESE wind is putting a real chop on it. The size is around 6ft to 6ft, but with a short period of 8 seconds, it’s lacking any punch.
Things get even smaller and weaker into the middle of the week. The energy drops into the double digits, like down to (49) on the 26th, with tiny 2ft to 2ft swell. The wind stays cross-onshore, so it’s flat and bumpy. You’d be better off staying home.
We do see a slight bump in energy on the 29th, with a long-period swell showing up. The swell period jumps to 15 seconds, but the swell height is only 1ft. That’s a long-period groundswell, which usually means better shaped waves, but with that tiny size, it’s just not enough to break properly. The wind is still onshore or cross-onshore, so it’s a no-go.
The only real glimmer of hope is way out there on the 2nd of August. The combined energy jumps up to (587), with a 6ft SE swell. That’s the biggest swell of the forecast. But it’s still a short period (8 seconds) and the wind is a moderate cross-onshore from the E, making it choppy. For a spot like Salgema, which is exposed to S swell, this SE direction is okay, but the wind is the killer. It’s going to be a messy, bumpy one.
Honestly, for the whole 16-day window, there isn’t a single standout. We’ve got a solid 10-day gap with no real recommendations. The consistent cross-onshore winds and the small, short-period swell are just a bad combo. Unless you’re desperate for a warm-water paddle, I’d give this one a miss.
Stay patient, Rusty.
