Table - best surf conditions forecast for Rye Ocean Beach over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get you the full picture for Rye Ocean Beach.
First up, the water temp is sitting at 57°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year up here, so no nasty surprises when you get wet.
Right now, we’re looking at a bit of a rough start. The next few days are going to be a write-off for a proper paddle session. Monday and Tuesday are packing serious size – swells from 12 ft to 13 ft – but the wind is a mess. Strong cross-shore and cross-onshore breezes are just chopping everything up. It’s big, but it’s ugly. The combined energy is massive (5899 and 6399 on Monday, then over 13000 on Tuesday), but it’s not doing you any favours.
Wednesday the 15th through to Friday the 17th, the swell drops a bit to 7 ft - 8 ft, and the wind starts to clean up. The problem is, even with cleaner conditions, that swell is still too big for this break to handle properly. It’s going to be a wall of white water. If you’re a beginner, stay well clear of anything over 5 ft here, and definitely over 8 ft is expert-only territory.
Now, we finally get a window. Saturday the 18th is the standout. The swell drops to a much friendlier 5 ft to 5 ft from the SW with a 13-14 second period, which is a nice long groundswell. This is properly clean, with light cross-off winds, near glassy at times on the Saturday afternoon. The energy is moderate (981 and 642), but for a beach-and-reef setup, this is where you want to be. The optimum direction matches the swell direction, and the conditions are just right. The crowds here can be an issue sometimes, so get in early.
Sunday the 19th is a drop-off. The swell fades to 3 ft - 3 ft. It’s clean, but marginal. After that, we have a stretch of small, clean days from Monday the 20th through to Thursday the 23rd, with swell around 3 ft to 5 ft. The winds are offshore or cross-off, but the energy is weak (under 1000). It’s surfable, but nothing to get excited about. The wind picks up again on the 23rd, turning it ugly.
We get a pulse on Friday the 24th – a 5 ft to 7 ft SW swell with a very long period of 17-19 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy (1693 and 2739). The Friday morning looks messy with a cross-shore wind, but the Friday afternoon cleans up nicely with a cross-off breeze. That 7 ft might be a bit meaty for the average surfer, but for the experts, that afternoon session could be a solid option.
The final weekend (25th and 26th) is back to strong winds messing up the swell, and by the 27th and 28th, the swell is too big again (7 ft - 13 ft) with howling winds. A real shame, as the conditions are clean, but it’s just too much for the break.
So, to wrap it up: Saturday the 18th is your best bet for a fun, clean session on a manageable swell. Keep an eye on Friday the 24th afternoon for a bigger, more powerful option if you've got the skills.
Rusty.
