The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Rye Ocean Beach.

First up, we’ve got a bit of a mixed bag. The water temp is sitting at 57° with a 0.7° anomaly, so pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year – nothing wild there.

The standout window kicks off Saturday afternoon, July 18th. It’s glassy, with a light 3 mph breeze from the ENE, and the swell is a solid 5 ft from the SW with a lovely 13-second period. That’s a nice long-period groundswell, and the combined energy is moderate at 780 – it’s gonna have some punch. This is the best on offer for the whole run. The break is a beach and reef setup, and with that offshore wind, it’s gonna be clean. Expect some decent, well-shaped waves, but keep in mind the longer period might make it a bit too straight for the beach sections.

Sunday the 19th is still alright. Morning has a 4 ft SW swell, 12-second period, and a cross-off breeze from the N at 9 mph. The combined energy drops to 431, so it’s weaker, but still clean. The afternoon is similar, just a touch smaller.

Monday the 20th sees a 3 ft SW swell, but the period jumps to 16 seconds – that’s a very long period groundswell. The wind is a moderate 16 mph cross-off from the N, and the energy is 547. The wave quality is a little questionable though, so it’s not a guaranteed ripper.

We’ve got a bit of a lull in quality from Tuesday the 21st through to Wednesday the 29th. There’s some swell, but the wind and conditions get messy. On Wednesday the 22nd, the swell jumps to 10 ft with a short 9-second period and a 19 mph cross-on wind – that’s a kite-surfing setup, not a paddle-surfing one. The energy is 1214, strong, but it’s ugly. The 23rd and 24th see even bigger swell, over 11 ft, with onshore winds – that’s expert-only territory, and even then, the wind is trashing it.

Now, a real glimmer of hope shows up on Thursday morning, July 30th. It’s clear skies, a light 6 mph cross-off from the NNW, and the swell is 6 ft from the SW at 13 seconds. The combined energy is 1169 – moderate-to-strong. This is tagged as excellent for experienced surfers, and it’s clean. That’s a serious second standout. The afternoon drops off a bit with a 6 ft swell and a light cross-on from the SSE, so the morning is the call.

The 31st and 1st of August are a write-off with strong winds, but then Sunday morning, August 2nd, brings a beauty. It’s clear, glassy offshore from the NNE at 6 mph, with a 4 ft SW swell and a very long 16-second period. The energy is 808. Expect clean, long-period lines. This is a promising long-range option, so keep an eye on it. The afternoon turns a bit cross-shore with a 6 ft WSW swell at 17 seconds, but it’s a bit more marginal.

So, overall, the best of the best is that Saturday afternoon, July 18th. The Thursday morning, July 30th, is a close second for the experienced crew. The rest of the time, you’re waiting for windows or battling the wind.

Rusty.
