The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s dig into the surf forecast for Rye Ocean Beach over the next 16 days. It’s a mixed bag, but there are a few sessions that’ll get your heart pumping.
Water temp is 56°, which is normal for this time of year.
The action starts on Tuesday, 18 August, with a 4ft southwest swell, a 14-second period, and a nice offshore breeze. That’s clean, fun surf, with moderate energy (974). Good for beginners. Tuesday afternoon stays clean with a light cross-off breeze.
Wednesday, 19 August, is a bust – strong 28 mph winds and dropping swell. Skip it. Thursday, 20 August, is also poor with cross winds and small swell.
Friday, 21 August, sees the swell pick up to 4ft–5ft, 15-second period, but the wind is cross-shore and lumpy. Energy jumps to 1331, but it’s not the cleanest.
Saturday, 22 August, is a hard pass. Swell hits 12ft, but it’s onshore and messy. That’s for tow-in or kite gear, not paddle surfing.
Sunday, 23 August, is the standout. The swell is 7ft out of the southwest with a 14-second period, and the wind is either light cross or glassy. The energy is massive (2696 in the morning, 1853 in the afternoon). This is big – over 8ft is expert territory, so only for seasoned surfers. The glassy afternoon session is the pick of the entire forecast. Don’t miss it if you’ve got the skills.
Monday, 24 August, drops to 5ft–6ft, with a clean cross-off breeze. Good fun for intermediates.
Tuesday, 25 August, is small but clean – 4ft to 4ft, NE cross-off. A good day for a longboard.
Wednesday, 26 August, brings strong winds back, and it’s messy. Thursday and Friday, 27–28 August, are all onshore and lumpy – no good.
The weekend of 29–30 August is blown out or cross-shore messy.
Now, look ahead to Monday, 31 August: 6ft southwest swell, 16-second period, glassy in the morning, and energy at 1731. Excellent for experienced surfers – that long period will shine on the reef. Tuesday, 1 September, is similar, with 5ft–5ft and a 16-second period, though the wind turns onshore by afternoon.
Wednesday, 2 September, wraps it up nicely – 5ft–6ft, 17-second period, glassy in the afternoon. Another one for the experienced crew.
So, the big standouts are Sunday, 23 August (glassy, 7ft, expert only) and Monday, 31 August (glassy morning, 6ft, long period). For beginners, Tuesday, 18 August, or Tuesday, 25 August, are your windows.
