The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for Rye Ocean Beach. It's a bit of a mixed bag ahead, with a whole lot of "no thanks" and a couple of real beauties if you can pick your moment.
Right off the bat, the outlook is dominated by a big, lumpy sneaker swell. We get a pulse of 13 ft on Saturday the 22nd of August, but it's howling onshore with a fresh breeze, making it a write-off. That sort of size is strictly for the experts, and even then it'll be messy. The swell energy is massive, hitting 11100, but it’s not our friend today. That big groundswell continues through Sunday the 23rd, but we finally get a window. Sunday afternoon is the standout: the wind swings offshore from the NE at just 3 mph, giving us glassy, clean conditions. The swell is still a meaty 7 ft from the SW, with a long period of 16 seconds. That's proper groundswell. The waves will have a lot of power and shape, and with 2981 combined energy, it's got some serious welly. For a beach and reef setup, that long period might make it a bit straight, but the offshore wind will be worth the paddle. This is the pick of the fortnight. Just be aware that the water temp is average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
After that, the week takes a nosedive. Monday the 24th cleans up a bit with a cross-offshore breeze, but the swell drops back to a unremarkable 5 ft with only moderate energy (around 945-987). It's more of a grovel than anything memorable. Tuesday the 25th is a write-off again, with onshore winds and lumpy conditions. A small window of opportunity pops up on Thursday the 27th, but with a weak, short-period 4 ft swell (524-885 energy), it’s not going to light anyone's fire.
The long-range outlook is more promising, but keep your expectations in check. Look towards Tuesday the 1st of September. Tuesday afternoon is looking excellent: glassy conditions, a 4 ft SW groundswell with a 15-second period, and enough energy (733) to make it fun. It’s the second true standout in the whole period. Wednesday the 2nd looks a bit bumpy, but then we get another big push on Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th of September. The swell jumps back to 7 ft and 8 ft, but it’s back up over the 8 ft mark on Friday which is expert territory. The wind is forecast to be light and clean from the NNW, so the 7 ft on the Thursday morning with a 14-second period (1874 energy) could be a very good session for the confident surfer. It's a promising call but a long way out, so take it with a grain of salt.
Overall, the cream of the crop is undeniably Sunday the 23rd afternoon and Tuesday the 1st of September afternoon. The rest is either too big and windy or too small.
Rusty.
