The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got a look at what’s coming up for Rye Ocean Beach. This is a beach and reef setup, exposed to the SW, and it’s a beginner-friendly spot that’s fairly consistent. The water temp is sitting at 56.7°F, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing out of the ordinary there.
We’re kicking off the period on Friday, July 17th, with some solid energy in the water. The morning session sees a 7.2ft SW groundswell with a long 16-second period, and the combined energy is pumping at 2594 (moderate to strong). The wind is a cross-off from the NNW at 15 mph, so it’s going to be clean. The afternoon stays clean with a 7.2ft SW swell, 16-second period, and the wind switches to a light offshore from the NNE at 5 mph, turning glassy. It’s a standout for sure—clean, good-sized lines rolling in. But fair warning: at 7.2ft, this is getting a bit too big for beginners; it’s more suited to intermediate and above. The long period means the waves will have real shape, and the energy is there, so expect some proper sets.
Saturday, July 18th, is a bit of a drop-off. Morning has a 5.6ft SW swell with a 14-second period, but the wind is a cross-shore from the NW at 15 mph, and the combined energy is 1154 (moderate). It’s manageable but not as clean. The afternoon, though, is a hidden gem: 4.9ft SW swell, 13-second period, and the wind goes glassy from the NNE at 5 mph. The energy is at 780 (moderate), and it’s looking very good—clean, fun waves for a surf.
Sunday, July 19th, the swell drops again. Morning has 3.6ft SW with a 12-second period, cross-off wind from the N at 15 mph, and energy at 437 (weak). It’s clean but small. Afternoon is 3.0ft SW with the same period, 385 energy, and a light cross-off from the N at 10 mph. You’ll get a few, but it’s not the day to get excited.
Monday, July 20th, is a bit of a mixed bag. Morning brings a 3.6ft SW swell with a long 16-second period, but the wind is a stiff cross-off from the NNW at 25 mph, energy at 639 (moderate). It’s clean but the wind is gusty, so it’ll be a bit of a wrestle. Afternoon sees a drop to 2.3ft SW with a 15-second period, 389 energy, and a cross-shore from the NW at 15 mph—nothing special.
Tuesday, July 21st, the afternoon is the pick. Morning has 3.6ft SW with a 14-second period, cross-off wind from the NNW at 15 mph, and 447 energy—clean but small. Then the afternoon turns on with a 4.6ft SW swell, 13-second period, 732 energy (moderate), and a light cross-off from the NNE at 10 mph. It’s clean, and the waves should be fun.
Now, from Wednesday, July 22nd
