The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty, and I’ve been looking at the charts for your local spot. Let’s call it like it is – the first few days are a total washout. We’ve got a big, raw swell, but it’s all blown out. The good news is that by the end of the week, things clean up and we get a proper session.
Right now, the swell is huge and ugly. Tuesday the 14th is a complete no-go with a 13ft swell from the WSW and a 22-25 mph onshore wind wrecking it. The energy is massive (13657), but it’s lumpy and dangerous. Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th are still too big, with 8ft to 8ft swell and the wind and tide are all wrong. Friday the 17th is still oversized for most, but the wind starts to turn. Friday afternoon sees a 8ft groundswell from the SW with a very long period of 17 seconds, and the wind goes glassy – calm. That’s a sign of things to come, but it’s still a big, powerful wave only for experienced surfers.
Now, here’s the standout. Saturday the 18th is the best of the whole outlook. The swell drops to a clean 6ft from the SW, with a 14-second period – that’s proper groundswell. The wind is offshore from the N at 9 mph, keeping it clean. The energy is still solid at 1271. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers. The water temp is about 57°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year. If you’re a beginner, this one is still a touch big (over 5ft), so Saturday afternoon is your go, with the swell easing to 5ft, the wind going light offshore from the NE, and the break cleaning up. It’s a beach and reef setup, so watch the banks.
Sunday the 19th sees the swell drop to 4ft, and the wind stays offshore, but the energy is weaker (432). It’s a smaller, cleaner day. Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st are poor, with strong winds and weak, messy surf. Wednesday the 22nd afternoon has a chance – a 4ft swell with glassy conditions, but it’s small.
After that, the second week gets patchy. There’s a spike of swell on Friday the 24th with 6ft, but that’s ruined by a 25-28 mph cross-offshore wind. Saturday the 25th is a write-off with onshore winds. The last real hope is Tuesday the 28th afternoon, where a 5ft swell from the SW meets very light wind, but it’s a marginal call.
So, bottom line: Saturday the 18th is your best day. Get out there early morning for the biggest, cleanest waves, or go for the afternoon session if you want something a bit more manageable. The crowds are only “sometimes” a problem at Rye Ocean Beach, so you should get plenty of waves.
Stay safe, and I’ll see you in the water.
