The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Rye Ocean Beach.
We’ve got a big 16-day window ahead, but the first real action worth paddling out for doesn’t kick off until Sunday the 23rd of August. Before that, it’s a flat spell – nothing doing. Then things get interesting, but with a serious caveat.
The standout session is going to be Sunday morning, the 23rd of August. The swell is a solid 8ft from the SW with a very long period of 14 seconds – that’s pure groundswell pumping in. The combined energy is strong at 2757, and we’ve got a clean, cross-off wind from the NNW at 9 mph. The water temp is about average for the time of year. This is a classic Rye session, but here’s the thing: at 8ft, this is getting into expert territory. It’s too big for beginners, and with that long period, the waves will be powerful and a bit straight at this beach-and-reef setup. If you’re experienced, you’re in for a treat. The crowd factor is "sometimes," so you might have some company, but it’s worth it.
Sunday afternoon the 23rd keeps the quality going with a 7ft SW swell, a 16-second period, and clean offshore winds from the NNE at 6 mph. Again, this is big and powerful – expert-only really.
Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th are a step down in size and quality. Monday is messy with onshore winds, so give it a miss. Tuesday morning the 25th has a 6ft SW swell (13 seconds) and a glassy offshore breeze from the ENE at 9 mph. The combined energy is moderate at 986. This is the best window for intermediate surfers – clean, manageable, and fun. It’s not a standout, but it’s a solid session.
Then we hit a rough patch. Wednesday the 26th through Thursday the 27th morning is poor with onshore winds and choppy conditions. Thursday afternoon the 27th cleans up with a 4ft SW swell and a 14-second period, plus a nice cross-off breeze from the N at 9 mph. It’s small but clean.
Friday the 28th of August brings another big pulse: 8ft to 7ft SW swell, 18-second period on the morning – that’s very long period groundswell. The combined energy is 3244, strong. But the wind is cross-shore or cross-on, and the waves are just too big for this break. It’s a powerful, technical session for experts only.
From Saturday the 29th onward, it’s a mixed bag of onshore winds, messy conditions, and a lot of days where the swell is just too big (over 8ft, sometimes hitting 10ft to 15ft) with strong winds. The standout in the second week is a long-range call for Saturday morning the 5th of September. We’ve got a 7ft SW swell with a 14-second period, clean cross-off winds from the NNW at 12 mph, and strong combined energy of 1667. This is a promising session, but it’s a week and a half away, so keep an eye on it. The water temp anomaly remains about average for the time of year.
For the rest of the second week, there’s a lot of onshore, windy chaos. The setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on those blown-out, big-swell days like the 3rd and 4th of September. If you’re a beginner, steer clear of this whole period after the 23rd – the swells are consistently over 5ft and often over 8ft after that.
Rusty out.
