The Lowdown
Alright, let me tell ya what's shapin' up for the next couple of weeks. First spot to get going is Rye Ocean Beach, a beach and reef setup that's exposed to the SW. The water temp is sittin' around 57°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year.
Sunday morning the 19th kicks things off with a clean 4ft SW swell, period a solid 12 seconds. The wind's a light N cross-off, so it's gonna be tidy. The wave energy is moderate (431) and it's got that nice shape to it. This is a beginner-friendly wave, so it's a good one to get out there. Sunday afternoon holds similar with a 3ft SW swell, still clean.
Monday the 20th starts with a bit more wind – N at 16 mph – but still cross-off, and the swell is 3ft from the SW with a long 16-second period. That's a proper groundswell, will have some punch but the sets might be a bit spaced out. The wave energy is solid (547). Monday afternoon drops to 2ft but has a 15-second period, so those long lines will be rolling in.
Now, Tuesday the 21st sees a bit of a bump. Morning is 5ft from the WSW with a 14-second period, but the wind is still favorable N at 12 mph cross-off. The energy is gettin' strong (919). Tuesday afternoon keeps 5ft SW, 13 seconds, still clean. The best of the week is likely Tuesday morning – that bigger swell with good wind and long period is a standout.
Hold on though, because from Wednesday the 22nd things get ugly. The wind swings around and picks up, and we get a run of poor conditions right through to the end of July. Wednesday morning has a 19 mph NW cross-shore wind messing up the 4ft swell. By Thursday the 23rd, we're looking at a massive 12ft SW swell, but it's got a 25 mph cross-on wind, just a total mess. Wave energy is huge (4947) but it's unsurfable. That trend continues for days – big swell, strong winds, lumpy cross-chop. Friday the 24th sees a 15ft WSW swell with near gale force winds (13130 energy), it's a kite surfing dream, not a paddle surfer's.
There's a big gap in good surf here. From Wednesday the 22nd right through to the end of the month, it's all poor or marginal. The wind just won't let up.
Finally, we get a glimmer of hope on Monday the 3rd of August. Morning session has a 4ft SW swell with a super long 20-second period, and the wind is N at 22 mph, but it's a clean cross-off! The wave energy is strong (1359). That's a proper groundswell, best for a point or reef break, but the wind is right. Monday afternoon bumps up to 5ft SW with a 19-second period, still cross-off, energy is very strong (1910). This is the other standout in the whole forecast – the third of August looks promising but it's a long way off, so keep an eye on it.
For the second week, things are a bit hit and miss. The 3rd of August is the only real highlight. The rest is either too windy or too small.
So, your best bet is to get out Tuesday morning the 21st for the biggest, cleanest swell of the near-term, and then pencil in Monday the 3rd of August for a potential long-period groundswell session. The middle of the forecast is a write-off for paddle surfing, but the kite crew will be having a field day.
Rusty.
