Alright folks, Rusty here, checking in. Let's have a look at what the next couple of weeks have in store for us.

First up, the window starts Wednesday afternoon, July 8th, and it kicks off with a bang. We've got a serious pulse of long-period SW groundswell hitting Rye Ocean Beach. We're looking at a solid 7ft of swell, and get this – the period is a very long 18 seconds. That's proper groundswell energy. Its a bit of a beast. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the east, so that face should be pretty clean. The water temp is currently 57°, which is bang on average for this time of year – no surprises there. Now, here's the catch: at this size and with that long period, the swell can be a bit much for a beach and reef setup. It might break a bit too straight and be pretty thumping. This is definitely one for experienced surfers only. The crowds can be an issue here, so get in early if you want a piece.

Moving into Thursday morning, July 9th, the swell drops to a more manageable 5ft from the SW, still with a solid 15-second period. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the north, so it’s looking clean again. This is a much better size for the crew looking for a fun session without getting smashed. Excellent conditions for experienced surfers again.

Friday, July 10th, follows a similar pattern. Morning sees a 5ft SW swell with a 15-second period and a cross-offshore northerly breeze. Afternoon it backs off to 5ft, with the wind swinging to a light offshore from the NNE. Both sessions are looking very good, with clean lines.

Now, we hit a bit of a rough patch. From Saturday, July 11th, right through to the end of the second week, things get pretty messy. The wind cranks up, turning onshore or cross-shore and strong, blowing out what could have been decent swell. There are some days where the swell is huge, like 10ft to 12ft, but it's all onshore junk. With that much wind and size on a beach setup, this looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. This run of poor conditions is about 10 days long, so don't hold your breath.

Keep an eye on Friday afternoon, July 17th. After the gales die down, we get a beautiful window. The wind goes glassy, and we have a 7ft SW swell with a 16-second period. That is a serious standout. It might be a bit big for beginners at 7ft, but for anyone with some experience, that glassy surface on a long-period groundswell is a dream. It's a promising hope after a long wait.

Sunday morning, July 19th, also looks tidy. A 5ft SW swell, 15-second period, with a clean cross-offshore breeze. Not as big as Friday, but a solid, clean surf option.

So to sum it up: the absolute best on offer is that Friday afternoon, July 17th, with the glassy conditions and the 7ft long-period swell. That Friday is a must-surf. The Thursday morning, July 9th, and Friday, July 10th are also excellent calls. The rest is a long wait or blown out.

Stay stoked.
