The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's take a look at what's coming down the pipe for Rye Ocean Beach.
We're looking at a bit of a slow start to this 16-day stretch, but there's a solid pulse of energy heading our way later on. The water temp is sitting at about 56°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so don't expect any nasty surprises when you get in.
The first real chance to get wet hits on Tuesday the 18th. We've got a clean 4ft swell rolling in from the southwest, with a light offshore breeze from the north-northeast. The wave energy is sitting at a moderate 621, and conditions are looking very good. It's a sweet little window to get a few fun ones before things go a bit sideways.
Wednesday the 19th through Friday the 21st is a write-off, to be honest. The wind cranks up hard from the north and north-northwest, blowing at 28 mph and 16 mph, absolutely ruining what little swell is on offer. You'd be better off staying home.
Now, here's where it gets interesting. The weekend of the 22nd and 23rd of August sees a serious pulse of southwest swell, pushing up to 8ft. The combined energy jumps into the thousands – we're talking 3187 on Saturday morning. But, here's the kicker: that size is pushing it for Rye Ocean Beach, especially with a 16-second period. The forecast says it's too big for this break. For most of us, that's a no-go. The cross-shore winds on Saturday don't help either. It could be a spectacle to watch, but not one to paddle out into unless you're a real glutton for punishment.
The following week brings more frustration. Monday the 24th has a smaller, cleaner 5ft swell but it's only rated as marginal. Tuesday the 25th is choppy onshore junk from the south.
We finally get a proper window again on Wednesday the 26th of August. The morning shows a clean 4ft southwest swell with a nice 16 mph offshore wind from the north-northeast. The wave energy is a moderate 602 and conditions are expected to be very good. This is a solid, clean option.
The end of the month and into September is where the standout quality lies. Sunday the 30th of August has excellent conditions for experienced surfers. We've got a 5ft to 6ft southwest swell, light offshore winds, and a combined energy around 1865. That's proper power and clean faces. Then Monday the 31st of August continues the trend with a 5ft swell, a long 17-second period, and light offshore winds from the north-northwest. The energy is a healthy 1394. This is groundswell, folks. It's going to be clean, powerful, and with those long gaps between sets, paddling out will be easier than it looks.
The best of the best, though, looks like Tuesday the 1st of September. The morning session offers a clean 6ft southwest swell, a near-slick offshore breeze from the north-northeast at just 3 mph, and a combined energy of 1572. This is an excellent call for experienced surfers. If you can get out there, that's your session.
The period winds down on the 2nd of September with smaller, cleaner leftovers, but that earlier run is the real gold.
So, the takeaway: The first week is a bust with one bright spot. The real show is from the 30th of August right through to the 1st of September. That's where you'll find the cleanest, most powerful surf of the window.
Rusty.
