The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s on offer for Rye Ocean Beach.
First up, Sunday the 23rd of August has a big swell rolling in at 8 ft from the SW, with a period of 14 seconds and a combined energy of 2757. That’s a lot of power. The wind is a light NNW at 9 mph, keeping it clean, but for a beginner spot, this is too much. The afternoon cleans up even more with a NNE offshore at 6 mph, the swell easing to 7 ft, and the period stretching to 16 seconds. Real groundswell, but again, too big.
Monday the 24th drops off to 5 ft SW in the morning, but the wind is a stiff N at 19 mph, cross-off, and energy drops to 995. It’s clean but marginal. The afternoon is similar with 5 ft and 719 energy.
Tuesday the 25th is nothing special. Light rain and a solid E wind at 16 mph, cross-off, with 6 ft SW swell. Energy is up to 1032 but the wind’s not helping. The afternoon goes onshore with a WSW breeze, messy.
Wednesday the 26th is a washout. Onshore winds both sessions, scores at zero.
Thursday the 27th morning is still poor, but the afternoon shows a glimmer. The wind swings to a light NNW cross-off at 6 mph, the swell drops to 4 ft, and the period is 14 seconds. Energy is low at 778, but it’ll be clean.
Friday the 28th brings another big one: 7 ft SW with an 18-second period and 2661 energy. That’s long-period groundswell, and for a beach and reef setup, it might break a bit straight. The wind is NW at 16 mph, cross, so it’s got some chop. Too big and messy.
Saturday the 29th is average. Cross-shore winds, 5 ft swell, 1032 energy.
Sunday the 30th we get another pulse: 8 ft SW, 16 seconds, 3112 energy. The wind is light WSW cross-on, choppy. Too big.
Monday the 31st is cleaner. A NNW cross-off at 9 mph, 7 ft SW swell, 15 seconds, 2333 energy. Clean but big.
Now, Sunday the 6th of September is the real standout. The morning has a NNW cross-off at 6 mph, 6 ft SW swell, 12-second period, and 1290 energy. The afternoon is even better with a N breeze at just 3 mph, nearly glassy, and the swell holds at 6 ft with 1489 energy. The water temp is 56°, about average. This is the session. Clean, solid, and the best of the whole run.
Monday the 7th of September is a mess. A NW gale at 28 mph in the morning, and by the afternoon it’s 31 mph from the W with a 13 ft swell and 10007 energy. That’s blown out and dangerous. Kite surfers might be out, but for us, it’s a hard pass.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a mix of too big or poor conditions, but Sunday the 6th of September is the clear winner. Don’t miss it.
