The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Looks like we’ve got a bit of a slow start and then a heap of swell that’s going to be too much for Rye Ocean Beach. The first real window of decent surf doesn’t kick in until Saturday the 18th. Before that, there’s a couple of days of nearly 8ft SW groundswell with a long 14-15 second period, but that’s pushing right into the danger zone for this exposed beach and reef setup. On Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th, the combined energy is through the roof (2645 and 3012), but the wind is cross-on and the swell is simply too big for this spot. Friday the 17th cleans up with a light N cross-off and 7ft SW swell, but again, that’s still too big for the break. So, there’s a gap of no real surf recommendations until Saturday morning.
Your standout window is Saturday the 18th. The morning starts with a clean 6ft SW swell (14s period) and a light NW cross-off. The combined energy drops to 1195, which is still solid but manageable for experienced surfers. Then Saturday afternoon gets even better – the wind goes glassy, with a slight air from the NNE, and the swell settles to a beautiful 5ft SW (13s). The energy is a moderate 721, and the water temp is sitting at 57°, which is about normal for this time of year. That afternoon session is the pick of the two weeks: clean, glassy, and solid head-high waves. Crowds are possible at this spot, so get out early.
Sunday the 19th is a big drop-off. The swell fades to 4ft in the morning and 3ft in the afternoon, with a clean N wind. It’s surfable, but marginal. The combined energy is down to 431 and 388, so it’s weak. Monday the 20th is even smaller, with a 3ft WSW swell, but the wind is a moderate 15 mph N cross-off, keeping it clean. The energy is only 457, so it’s a log day at best.
Through the rest of the second week, the swell tries to come back but it’s mostly messy or too big. Tuesday the 21st has a fun little 4ft WSW swell in the afternoon, with a light NW cross-off and a combined energy of 572. That’s a clean, mellow option. But from Wednesday the 22nd onwards, it’s a lot of strong cross-off winds and building swell. Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th see big SW swell returning (8ft to 10ft) with cross-on winds, making it completely unsurfable. Saturday the 25th still has a 8ft SW swell, too big for the break, and the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-off. The rest of the month into the 30th is a mix of strong winds, rain, and messy cross-shore conditions, with occasional small clean windows that are too weak to get excited about.
Bottom line: if you’ve got a window, aim for Saturday the 18th afternoon. That’s your one true gem. Everything else is either too big, too small, or blown out.
