The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Rye Ocean Beach.
Right off the bat, the next few days are a bit of a write-off. The surf’s there, but the wind’s just not playing ball. We’ve got a solid run of cross-onshore and onshore winds from the west and southwest that’ll have the place chopped up and lumpy. For a beach and reef setup like Rye, that’s just not the one. The swell’s actually building through the end of July, pushing up to 12 ft, but it’s coming with a 18-25 mph breeze from the wrong direction, so it’s a messy, blown-out affair. The combined swell energy is strong to very strong (values like 8432 and 7123), but it’s all for nothing with that wind. This stretch from Monday the 20th through to Saturday the 25th is a no-go – you’d be better off doing something else.
Now, there’s a bit of a gap in the good stuff. The first real window of opportunity opens up on Sunday the 26th of July. The morning is still marginal with a 6 ft SW swell and a light cross breeze, but the afternoon is where it gets interesting. The wind drops to a glassy 3 mph from the WSW, and the swell holds at 5 ft from the SW with an 11-second period. The combined energy is moderate (574), and the conditions are described as “glassy.” That’s about as clean as it gets. The swell direction is a good match for the optimum SW, and the break is fairly consistent. This is a standout for the week – a proper session for anyone who can paddle out. Keep in mind, the water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual.
Then Monday the 27th of July keeps the run going. The morning is clean with a 4 ft SW swell and a cross-off breeze from the NNW at 9 mph. The afternoon is even better – a 5 ft SW swell, 13-second period, and a light offshore from the NNE at 6 mph. The combined energy is moderate (651), and the conditions are “clean.” This is another solid option, and crowds are possible here, so you might have some company.
After that, we get a bit of a lull again. Tuesday the 28th has a clean morning with a 5 ft SW swell and a strong cross-off breeze, but it’s a bit lumpy in the afternoon. Wednesday the 29th is a write-off with strong winds, and Thursday the 30th is back to onshore slop. Friday the 31st of July has a 8 ft SSW swell, but the wind is onshore and the swell is too big for this break, so it’s only for experts.
Looking further out, the first week of August has some promise. Saturday the 1st of August has a 6 ft SSW swell with a moderate cross breeze – it’s a bit lumpy, but not terrible. The real standout in the second week is Sunday the 2nd of August. The afternoon is glassy, with a 4 ft SW swell and a very long 16-second period. The combined energy is moderate (1164), and the conditions are “glassy” and described as “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” That long period groundswell is going to peel nicely at Rye’s reef, but it’ll be a bit straight at the beach break. For the experienced crew, this is the one to circle. Then Monday the 3rd of August has clean waves with a 4 ft SW swell and a light offshore – a nice little finisher.
So, the best on offer is the glassy Sunday afternoon on the 26th of July, and the long-period glassy session on Sunday the 2nd of August. The rest is a bit of a mixed bag, but there’s enough to keep you interested if you pick your moments.
Rusty.
