The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about the outlook for Rye Ocean Beach.
We've got a solid stretch of surf coming up, but it's not all smooth sailing. The standout action is definitely on Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 31st, but we need to talk about the size. This break is a beach and reef setup, and the water temp is running about average for this time of year.
First up, we kick off Saturday the 22nd in rough shape. A strong 12 ft SW swell on the way, but it's got a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore wind making a mess of things. The wave energy is massive (6146), but it's a no-go for paddle surfing. For the kites out there, though, it could be a good session.
Sunday the 23rd is where it gets interesting. The swell drops to a still-chunky 8 ft from the SW, but the wind switches to a light offshore from the NNE. The water is glassy, and the waves have a long 15-16 second period. This is a quality groundswell. The energy is still high (2891), but it's right on the edge for size. This is for experienced surfers only. The long period is best for the reef section here.
Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th are a step down. The swell backs off to 5-6 ft, but the wind is still decent. The energy drops to moderate (995-1152), and the conditions are clean. The waves are more manageable. Tuesday afternoon looks particularly good for the more experienced crew with a 4/10 rating.
Then we hit a bit of a lull from Wednesday the 26th through Thursday the 27th. The swell is small (3-5 ft) and the wind is onshore, creating choppy surf. The energy is weak (439-827). It's a bit of a waiting game.
Now, Friday the 28th morning brings another big pulse. A 7 ft WSW swell with a very long 17-second period and clean cross-offshore winds. The energy is strong (2989). This is another one for the experts only, as the long period will make it dumpy on the beach.
Saturday the 29th morning is a gem. The swell drops to 5 ft from the SW, the wind is a slight cross-offshore from the east, and the energy is moderate (920). It's glassy. This is a great window for all levels.
But hold on – the real highlight arrives on Monday the 31st of August. The swell is a solid 8 ft from the SW, with a long 16-second period, and the wind is absolute glass. Zero mph. The energy is strong (2870). This is the best of the best for experienced surfers. The lineup will be crowded, but the conditions will be epic.
The rest of the first week of September looks mixed. Some big swell with onshore winds, and some smaller, cleaner windows. Saturday the 5th of September looks promising with a 6 ft SW swell and clean cross-offshore winds.
So, to wrap it up: the standout is Monday the 31st of August for the experienced crew. Sunday the 23rd is a close second. For the rest of us, Saturday the 29th morning and the 5th of September are the best bets for a fun, manageable surf.
Rusty, signing off.
