The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the pipe for Rye Ocean Beach. This is a beach and reef set-up that loves a good SW swell, and we’ve got a bit of a mixed bag over the next couple of weeks. The water’s sitting at a pretty normal 56°F for this time of year, so nothing weird going on there.
We kick things off proper on Tuesday the 18th. The morning is looking sweet with a 4ft SW swell, a 14-second period, and a clean NE wind blowing offshore. That’s a solid combo, and the energy is decent with a reading of 974. It’s not massive, but it’ll be clean and fun. The afternoon holds up too, with a lighter NNE breeze keeping things tidy. That’s your best bet for the first few days.
Wednesday the 19th is a write-off. Nasty strong winds, dropping swell. Thursday the 20th is a bit better with a smaller swell, but the wind is all over the place, making it messy. Friday the 21st sees a bigger 5ft to 6ft SW swell pulsing in, but the cross-onshore wind is going to chop it up – not worth paddling out for.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. We’ve got a standout on the cards for Saturday the 22nd. A chunky 8ft SW groundswell with a 16-second period is forecast, packing some serious energy in the 3005 range. That’s a lot of power. The wind is moderate and cross-shore, but the real issue is that it’s simply too big for this spot. This is a wave for the experts only, and even then, it’s going to be a handful. The swell is so long-period that it might break a bit too straight across the beach, but if you’re a seasoned surfer on a reef, you might get some mega ones. Sunday the 23rd is still big at 7ft, but the afternoon on the 23rd is a real treat. The wind swings to a light offshore NE, the swell drops to 6ft, and the energy is still strong. That’s a window for experienced surfers to get some clean, powerful waves.
After that, the quality drops. Monday the 24th is marginal with lumpy cross-offshore winds. Tuesday the 25th is a complete mess with strong onshore winds. We get a few more marginal days mid-week, but nothing really clean until the 28th, which is another day of big, blown-out conditions. The 29th has a clean offshore wind in the afternoon, but the swell is only 5ft with a shorter period, making it a bit average.
The first week of September is looking pretty sad. Mostly small, weak swell and poor wind. The very last slot on Wednesday the 2nd of September afternoon has a tiny 2ft SW swell and a light offshore wind, so it’ll be clean but tiny. There’s a real gap in decent surf from the 25th of August through to the end of the 16-day window, with only a few fleeting moments that are worth a look.
So, to wrap it up: the best on offer is the Tuesday the 18th for a clean, fun session, and the Sunday the 23rd afternoon for the experienced crew looking for a powerful, clean wave. Everything else is a bit of a gamble.
Rusty.
