Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Right, mates, let’s get into it. The next couple of weeks are a real mixed bag for Rye Ocean Beach. We've got a massive pulse of energy hitting mid-week, but the winds are going to be a nightmare for a lot of it. The water is currently sitting at 58°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won't be freezing your bits off.
First up, the start is a write-off. Friday the 3rd is a no-go with howling 25 mph cross-onshore winds and big, messy 13ft SW swell. Saturday the 4th isn’t much better with strong onshores. We're looking at a couple of pretty grim days with nothing to recommend.
Now, Sunday the 5th is where it gets interesting, but only for the very experienced. The early morning brings a solid 10ft SSW groundswell with a very long 17-second period and moderate cross-offshore winds. The combined wave energy is massive (6938). It’s clean, but the size and power will be too much for anyone but experts. The afternoon stays similar.
Monday the 6th is a beauty for the competent crew. Morning sees a 6ft SW swell with light cross-offshore winds, and it cleans up into the afternoon with a gorgeous glassy 5ft SW swell. The wave energy is moderate (810). That afternoon session will be absolutely pristine, just you and the lines.
Tuesday the 7th starts glassy again with a clean 5ft SW groundswell – perfect conditions. The wind shifts onshore in the arvo though, making it a bit more average. Wednesday the 8th has a really clean morning on offer with a 6ft SW swell and light offshore winds from the NNE. The period is a long 18 seconds, so that'll be a proper groundswell with plenty of push (2671 energy). It’s a standout for the week.
After that, the wind stays light and favourable through Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th. The swell drops to a more manageable 5ft – 5ft, but it’s clean. The best bet from this run would be either the glassy Monday arvo or the offshore Wednesday morning.
Things fall apart again from Saturday the 11th through to Sunday the 12th with building wind and dropping swell. Then it gets wild. Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th are pure chaos with massive 16ft to 18ft SW swells and gale-force onshore winds. That's not surfing, that’s survival. It'll be a complete wasteland for anyone on a shortboard, probably more interesting for the kite crew if you're into that.
The rest of the second week stays grim with strong cross-onshore winds and messy, lumpy conditions. However, keep an eye on Saturday the 18th. The early morning looks magic with a glassy 6ft SW groundswell. That’s a promising sign but it’s a long way off, so don't bank on it yet.
For the standout, I'm calling Wednesday the 8th morning. A clean 6ft SW swell, light offshore wind, and that long period is going to produce some proper walls. It’s a gem.
