The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Rye Ocean Beach over the next couple of weeks.

Alright, so the outlook for Rye Ocean Beach is a real mixed bag to start. We've got a solid groundswell from the southwest on the way, and the water is sitting at 56°, which is about normal for this time of year – nothing to write home about. The trouble is, for the first few days, the wind is just going to be a pain. We've got a long wait for the real clean stuff.

The first recommendation isn't until Wednesday, August 19th, but honestly, it's a write-off. North winds at 28 mph, even though they're cross-off, are just too strong to make the 3 ft, 15-second SW groundswell worth it. It's a no-go from me.

Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st are similar stories. The swell is a mix of SW groundswell, but the wind is all over the place – cross and cross-on. The moderate energy is there, but the chop is going to be messy. Friday afternoon sees the swell bump up to 5 ft (14-second period), but the cross-on wind makes it a choppy mess.

The weekend is where things get interesting, but only for the brave. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd see the swell building to a serious 8 ft and 7 ft from the SW (strong energy). That's expert territory, and the winds are still cross-on or cross-shore, so it's going to be a bumpy, powerful ride. Not for the faint of heart.

The standouts are the Sunday the 23rd afternoon and the following Monday the 25th. Sunday afternoon, the wind actually swings to a light offshore from the NNE at 6 mph, and the 6 ft, 13-second SW groundswell cleans right up. That's a proper session for experienced surfers. Then, on Monday the 25th, the wind turns to a glassy calm (0 mph) and the 7 ft, 11-second SSW groundswell is just going to be perfect. The break is still going to be big, so it's still expert-friendly, but it'll be a dream to paddle out.

The following week is a redemption arc. After a windy Tuesday, Wednesday the 27th brings a glassy morning with a 6 ft, 17-second SW groundswell. That's a very long period, so it'll be powerful and lined up, perfect for this beach-and-reef setup. Another absolute cracker for the experienced crew.

Things settle down as we head into September. The first few days have consistent 5 ft to 5 ft SW groundswell with clean cross-off winds, good for a solid paddle. The energy is moderate, so it's not a monster, but it's consistent and fun. Thursday the 3rd of September morning is another glassy gem with a 6 ft, 17-second SW groundswell – just beautiful. The afternoon might get a bit cross-shore, but the morning is the pick.

Bottom line: The best of the best is the glassy morning of Wednesday, August 26th, with that 7 ft, long-period SSW groundswell. It's a big, powerful, clean swell that only the experts will be able to handle, but it'll be unforgettable. The second standout is the glassy morning of Thursday, September 3rd, with the 6 ft, very long-period SW groundswell. That's a proper session.

Surf's been a bit of a battle, but there are some gems in there. Keep your eyes on the forecast. Rusty.
