The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s happening at Porth Beach.

Honestly, it’s a pretty flat spell ahead. The next week and a half is looking tough for anyone trying to get a proper wave. The swell is tiny and most of the time the wind is either onshore or cross-onshore, ruining what little bump there is. We’ve got a long stretch of poor surf conditions from now until roughly August 12th.

The first real blip of energy shows up on the morning of Wednesday, August 12th. Swell jumps to 4ft from the west, with a period of 10 seconds, and the combined energy hits 225 – that’s moderate wave energy. But the wind is onshore from the northwest, so it’s not going to be clean. It’s messy and not worth paddling out for.

Thursday, August 13th morning offers a bit more size at 4ft from the west, with a period of 10 seconds (energy 290). The wind is light cross-onshore, which leaves a few ripples on the surface. It’s marginal, but maybe one for the hardcore longboarders who don’t mind a bit of bump.

The only real standout window comes on the morning of Friday, August 14th. The swell drops to 3ft from the west, period 8 seconds, but the wind goes glassy – calm, with a slight air. The water is a touch warmer than normal at 66°F. The combined energy is 109, which is weak, but for Porth Beach, that glassy morning is your best shot. The waves will be small and clean, perfect for a beginner session. Just know that this spot can get busy, so expect crowds.

After that, the wind turns back onshore or cross-onshore, and the swell stays small and jumbled through the rest of the forecast. There’s a pulse of 4ft swell from the west-northwest on the 19th and 20th of August, but it’s blown out by strong onshore winds. The wave energy gets up to 341 on the 20th, but it’s not surfable conditions.

So, if you’re after a wave, target that Friday, August 14th morning. It’s the only time the stars line up for a clean, rideable wave. The rest of the run is a write-off.

Rusty.
