The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.

First off, I gotta be straight with you – we’ve got a long, dry stretch ahead. The surf is gonna be a total no-show for the first week, from Thursday the 6th right through to Wednesday the 12th. That’s a solid seven days of pretty much nothing worth paddling out for. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly on it or cross-onshore, and the energy is weak. You’ll see combined energy readings in the double digits, like 108 and 54, which is just sad. Don’t bother.

The first real glimmer of hope pops up on Thursday the 13th. Porth Beach is the only game in town, and it’s a beginner-friendly spot. The morning session is where it’s at. We’re looking at a 4ft swell from the west with a 10-second period, which is a bit of groundswell. The wind is dead calm, glassy conditions – that’s the major positive here. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no weird surprises there. The combined energy hits 235, which is moderate, but the wave comment says it’s only “surfable but very ordinary.” Honestly, it’s not gonna be pumping, but if you’re desperate for a paddle, this is the only window worth a look. Expect crowds at Porth Beach, as it does get busy.

Things stay pretty ordinary right through to the end of the forecast. Friday the 14th and Saturday the 15th are a write-off with onshore winds and choppy conditions. Sunday the 16th morning has a little cleaner look with a cross-offshore breeze from the SSW, and a 4ft swell from the west-southwest, but the energy is moderate and the quality is still just “surfable.” The rest of the second week is a mix of stronger winds, shorter period swells, and lumpy seas. On Monday the 17th, a fresh breeze from the NNW hits 18 to 21 mph, with a 5ft northerly swell but only a 6-second period – that’s a choppy, blown-out mess and honestly, it’s more of a kite-surfing day than a paddle-surfing day.

So, the standout here is the Thursday 13th morning session at Porth Beach. It’s not a world-class wave, but with calm winds and a bit of west swell, it’s the best you’ll see. The rest of the 16 days is a near-total drought. Keep the board in the car, but don’t get your hopes up.
