The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Ponta do Mangue. Straight up, I’ve gotta be honest with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim. The finder is throwing up a big fat zero for any decent surf, so we’re in for a long, flat spell. There’s a stretch of over a week here with nothing worth paddling out for, so don’t bother dusting off the wax just yet.
We start off Tuesday, August 18th, with a sloppy, onshore mess. That 6ft SSE swell is getting hammered by a 16 mph SE wind, making it a total write-off. The energy is moderate (433), but the quality is just poor. The wind sticks onshore all week, with a bit of a cross-on angle creeping in from Friday the 21st. We’re looking at waist-high junk at best, with periods under 8 seconds, so it’s all weak, short-period wind chop. Definitely not worth your time.
There’s a little blip on Thursday the 27th of August in the afternoon. We get a pulse of long-period groundswell from the south, with a 17-second period and a massive energy reading of 1225. That’s a lot of energy, but the problem is the 12 mph cross-onshore wind from the east. It’s going to be choppy and messy. The wave comment calls it “marginal” at best, and with that wind, it’s just too frustrating. For a spot like this, a long-period south swell needs a clean offshore wind to really shine, and we just don’t get it.
The rest of the run into the first week of September is more of the same: onshore and cross-onshore winds, small, weak swell, and poor conditions. The last few days of August and into September 2nd, the swell stays small, around 3ft to 4ft, with short periods around 7-8 seconds. The energy is low to moderate (in the 100-250 range), and there’s never a moment where the wind cleans up.
Honestly, if you’re desperate for a wave, the best you could hope for is a quick session on the rare chance the wind drops, but the forecast doesn’t show that happening. For now, the kitesurfers might get a bit of a look if the wind holds, but for a paddle surfer, this is a blank run. That’s just how it goes here sometimes. Keep an eye on the charts, things can change.
Rusty.
