The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's get into it.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough one to write. We're looking at a stretch of days here at Ponta d'Areia that just aren't cooperating. The whole 16-day window is a bit of a write-off for decent surf.
The water is warm though, sitting at 83°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that's a small comfort if you're just going for a swim.
The main issue is the wind. It's locked in from the ENE and NNE, blowing cross to cross-on shore pretty much every single session. That's wrecking whatever small swell we get. And the swell itself isn't helping. It's small and weak, mostly around 4ft to 5ft, with a short, weak period of just 5 to 6 seconds. The combined wave energy stays low, barely getting above 100 (109) on Thursday morning, and mostly sitting in the weak 40-80 range. That's not enough push to make anything happen, even before the wind messes it up.
Every single entry in the forecast is labeled as "poor surf conditions," and with a combination of weak, short-period swell and choppy, lumpy winds, there's just nothing to recommend. It's a near-total blank run, and honestly, that's pretty normal for the area when the trade winds get cranky. There are no standout days, no hidden gems. For the next two weeks, from the 10th of September right through to the 25th, I wouldn't bother paddling out at Ponta d'Areia. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, but for us wave chasers, it's a hard pass.
Rusty.
