The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, let’s talk about the stretch ahead. The biggest window of opportunity is concentrated around the last week of August and into the first few days of September. There’s a bit of a flat spell to start, but once the swell kicks in, there’s some real quality.
It’s a slow start, with no real action until Thursday morning, August 20th. The water temp is sitting right around average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
For the first stand-out, you’ll want to be at Playa de Tranqueru on Thursday morning, August 20th. We’ve got a clean, glassy 4ft NW swell with a modest 8-second period. The energy is on the low side (323), but with light west winds going glassy, it’s a perfect little window for a fun session. The waves will be small and clean, ideal for a longboard or a fish.
The next real highlight is Thursday morning, August 27th. The swell is pumping up to 8ft from the WNW with an 8-second period, and the combined energy is solid (706). The wind is WSW, giving a clean cross-offshore texture. This is a bigger, more powerful day, and it’s going to be a ripper. The sets will be packing a punch, so it’s more suited to intermediate and above.
Then, on Saturday morning, August 29th, we get another dose of quality. A 6ft NW swell, 8-second period, with light west winds creating a clean cross-offshore. The energy is high (788). This is a proper weekend morning session – consistent, clean, and with enough push to get some good turns.
Looking further out, the promising action continues. On Monday morning, August 31st, it’s flat calm and glassy with a 5ft NW swell (9 seconds, 632 energy). That’s a really clean, workable wave. And then Tuesday morning, September 1st, brings another glassy morning with 5ft NW swell. Finally, Wednesday morning, September 2nd, looks like a great call with a clean, glassy 6ft NW swell (9 seconds, 622 energy). Those early September mornings are looking like a real treat.
The standout of the whole run, though, is Friday morning, September 4th. The forecast is for a 6ft NW swell, 10-second period, and a massive combined energy of 752. The wind will be light from the ENE, making it glassy. This is the pick of the bunch – a long-period groundswell, perfect conditions, and a solid 6ft. Keep your fingers crossed, but this one looks like a real beauty.
The swell is over 8ft on a couple of afternoons, like the 26th and 2nd, which is strictly for the experienced crew. Also, the afternoons across the board tend to get a cross-onshore wind that messes with the surface. Stick to the mornings for the best chance of clean surf.
