Right then, let’s have a look what’s in store for Playa de Tranqueru over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a bit of a slow start. The first week is mostly small, weak, and messy. The water’s sitting at 68°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
Nothing really gets going until Saturday the 18th of July. That’s the standout window. The morning brings a clean, glassy 6 ft swell out of the WNW, with moderate wave energy (339). The wind is offshore, so it should be pretty tidy. That’s the one to point the car at – the best of the whole run. The afternoon on the 18th jumps to 7 ft from the NW (530 energy), but the wind swings onshore a bit, so it’s not as good.
Sunday the 19th still has some size – around 5 ft – but the cross-shore wind will chop it up. Then from Monday the 20th into Tuesday the 21st, we get some real muscle: 7 ft to 7 ft swells from the NW and NNW, with wave energy climbing up to 1204 on Tuesday morning. That’s serious, heavy stuff. The wind is cross or cross-onshore, so it’ll be a bumpy, powerful sea. That kind of size and energy is for experienced surfers only – beginners should sit that one out. The period stays between 7 and 10 seconds, so it’s not super long, but there’s plenty of push.
After Tuesday the 21st, it backs right off. Wednesday the 22nd morning turns glassy again with a 4 ft NNW swell (228 energy), but then it fades quickly to tiny, weak conditions through the end of the window.
So bottom line: hold out for Saturday the 18th morning – that glassy 6 ft WNW swell is the pick. The following Monday and Tuesday bring serious size and power, but the wind is messy, so it’s more of a challenge for the crew who can handle it.
Rusty.
