The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s break down what’s coming up at Playa de Tranqueru.
Right now, we’ve got a slow start. The surf is tiny through Tuesday and Wednesday, waves barely hitting 1ft, and the wind is mostly cross or cross-onshore. It’s pretty scrappy.
We’ve got a bit of a gap until Thursday morning, 20 August, when we finally see some life. Swell bumps to 3ft from the NNW, with a period of 11 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell start. The wind is onshore though, and the combined wave energy is still moderate at (287). It’s a marginal call.
Thursday afternoon gets more interesting: 5ft from the NNW, period 10 seconds, and wave energy jumps to (519). Still onshore wind, but you can feel the ocean waking up. For the experienced crew, this might have a few punchy ones.
Friday 21 August is when it gets real. We’ve got 6ft from the NNW, period 10 seconds, and wave energy sits at (753) in the morning and (766) in the afternoon. The morning has a light cross-shore wind, which will keep things reasonably clean. This is your pick of the first week – solid, surfable size for intermediates, and the swell direction is nearly spot-on for this break. Keep an eye on the crowds; this spot can get busy when it turns on.
Over the weekend and into early next week, the swell drops back. Saturday morning 22 August is glassy with 4ft from the NNW, period 9 seconds, wave energy at (207). It’s surfable but nothing special. Sunday morning 23 August is also glassy with 3ft, period 7 seconds, wave energy (120) – small and weak.
Now here’s where it gets interesting. There’s a long gap of ordinary, small surf through the rest of the week. But hold on for Sunday 30 August. That morning, we’ve got 6ft from the NNW, period 9 seconds, and the wind is dead calm – glassy. Wave energy jumps to (615). This is a standout. Clean, punchy waves for intermediates. The afternoon holds the same size and glassy conditions with (625). This is the best window in the whole outlook.
Then Tuesday 1 September morning looks promising too – 6ft from the NW, period 10 seconds, light offshore wind from the SSE, and wave energy at (846). Conditions will be clean. If you can stretch it, Wednesday 2 September morning is also strong: 6ft from the NW, period 11 seconds, glassy, wave energy at (940). That’s a proper session for the experienced crowd.
Water temperature is sitting at 70°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – feels nice.
So, to sum it up: the standout is Sunday 30 August – glassy, 6ft from the NNW, clean. Tuesday 1 September and Wednesday 2 September mornings are also top-tier if you can wait.
Rusty.
