Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Ah, folks, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you – this 16-day stretch at Playa de Tranqueru is a bit of a struggle. We've got a long, quiet patch ahead before anything with real punch turns up. The models are showing a lot of poor surf conditions with onshore or cross-shore winds messing things up. Don't hold your breath for the first week or so.
The water is sitting at 68° today, which is a whopping 4° warmer than normal – that's a proper anomaly for this time of year, like the ocean is wearing a wetsuit when it doesn't need one.
Here's how it shakes out. For the first several days – Sunday July 5th right through to Thursday July 9th morning – it's flat and messy. Tiny swell, short periods, mostly cross-shore to onshore breezes. Thursday morning the 9th is the first glimpse of something surfable, with a 2 ft NW swell and glassy conditions, but it’s still ordinary. We then get another long slog of poor-to-ordinary days all the way through to July 17th.
Now, the real story is Friday July 17th. We've got a proper northwest groundswell hitting in the morning, 6 ft at 9 seconds from the NNW. That’s enough size for experienced intermediates, but the cross-shore wind (WNW, 9 mph) keeps it from being clean perfection. Combined energy is a strong 572, so there's real push behind it. By Friday afternoon, it builds to 8 ft – that’s expert territory for sure, but the cross-onshore wind gentles up the face a bit. Still, with the optimal swell direction out of the NW matching what Playa de Tranqueru wants, this is the standout window of the entire outlook. Crowds are 'sometimes' an issue here, so you might get a bit of company.
Saturday July 18th keeps the swell going with 7 ft in the morning, but the cross-onshore wind gets a bit stronger (WNW, 9-12 mph), making things choppier as the day goes on. By Sunday the 19th, the swell drops back to a more ordinary 4 ft and the wind turns cross-on again from the NE.
If you're a kiter, the whole second half of this run might look more interesting than paddle surfing, especially those strong, choppy days from July 13th onward when the swell is 3-8 ft and the winds aren't doing the wave faces any favours.
So to sum up: the first ten days are a write-off for decent waves. Your one shot is Friday July 17th – get on it if you can handle a bit of size and a side breeze. Long-range forecasts are a bit less certain, but that Friday window looks promising.
Rusty.
