The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Playa de Tranqueru has in store for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the first week is a tough one for surfers. We’ve got a dry spell that stretches from the 15th all the way through to the morning of the 21st of July. That’s a solid week of tiny, messy waves with poor direction and hardly any energy behind them. The winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the swell heights are all under 3ft with short periods of 5 to 7 seconds. It’s basically a lake out there, so don’t bother waxing up until the 20th when we see a little bump in size, but even then the wind is a problem.
Things start to change on the 21st of July. The swell picks up to 6ft from the NNE, with a combined energy of 331 (moderate). That’s a bit more push, but the wind is cross-shore and the conditions are still marginal. The best window for a paddle really opens up on the 22nd of July, Wednesday morning. We’ve got 3ft of swell from the NNE and glassy conditions. The wind is nil, and the water is likely about average for the time of year. It’s not gonna be epic, but it’s clean and ridable for intermediates.
Now, if you’re looking for the real standout of this forecast, you’ve got to circle the 25th of July, Saturday morning. That’s the one. We’re looking at a clean 3ft swell from the NW with a solid 11-second period (groundswell). The energy is strong at 298 (moderate), and the wind is glassy. That period is long enough to feel some real drive, and because it’s a point break-friendly direction, Playa de Tranqueru should be holding some nice lines. Just keep in mind, with a longer period like that, the sets could be a bit spaced out, but the paddle out will be easier. The crowd factor is listed as “sometimes” so you might have some company, but it’s not a circus.
The good run continues into the 26th of July, Sunday afternoon. Another glassy session with 4ft from the NNW and a 10-second period, combined energy of 290. That’s proper surfable. The morning of the 27th and 28th picks up even more size, with 6ft from the NW, but the wind starts to get a bit tricky again. The 29th of July, Wednesday morning, is a another solid call – 5ft from the NW, very long period of 10 seconds, and glassy conditions. The energy is a strong 495. That’s expert territory for size, but if you’ve got the skills, it’s clean and powerful.
So, to sum it up: suffer through the first week, then the 22nd is a decent warm-up, but the 25th and 29th are the real reasons to keep an eye on the forecast. Long-range standouts are promising, but we’ll have to see how they hold up.
Rusty.
