Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let’s talk about the waves. Rusty here, with the straight talk for the next couple weeks.
First thing you’ll notice – the water is a balmy 69°F right now, which is about 4°F warmer than normal for July. That’s a heck of a lot warmer than usual, really nice.
The whole forecast period starts off flat and stays quiet for a long time. The first chance to get wet is on Monday the 6th, but it’s tiny. Playa de Tranqueru has a 2 ft swell out of the NW with a 9-second period. The combined wave energy is only 75 – that’s weak. The morning is your only shot: glassy conditions with a 3 mph breeze from the ENE, so the surface is clean. But the waves are just too small for a proper session. The afternoon is glassy too, but still nothing doing.
From Tuesday the 7th all the way through Monday the 14th, it’s a real dry spell. Swell stays between 1 ft and 3 ft, mostly from the NW. Winds are generally cross-shore or onshore, light, and it’s choppy or messy. The energy levels are low – mostly in the 20s, 30s, and 70s. The scorecards are calling it poor, and there’s no argument there. There’s one moment on Sunday the 12th afternoon where the wind swings cross-offshore from the SW at 9 mph, cleaning up a 3 ft NW swell with 150 energy – that’s moderate. It’s rideable, but nothing to get stoked about.
Friday the 17th brings a bit more size. Swell hits 5 ft from the WNW, but with a short, weak 6-second period. The wind is cross-onshore at 9 mph, making it choppy. Combined energy is 169 (moderate), but it’s poor quality. Saturday the 18th is similar – cross-shore wind and bumpy.
Now, here’s the one to circle on your calendar, but it’s a long way off – Sunday the 19th of July. The morning shows a solid 6 ft swell from the NNW with an 8-second period and a combined energy of 302 (strong). That’s the biggest push of the whole 16 days. The wind is light at 3 mph from the NW, but still cross-onshore, so there’s a few ripples. It’s marginal for beginners at that size – the 6 ft is getting into intermediate territory, and the short period can make it dumpy. The afternoon pumps up to 6 ft with stronger cross-onshore winds at 9 mph, and energy of 372 – that’s experts only, with bumpy conditions.
Monday the 20th still has some size (4 ft to 5 ft), but the wind stays cross-on or onshore, so don’t expect perfection.
By Tuesday the 21st, it’s back to small, glassy 2 ft waves in the morning – clean, but only for a quick, mellow paddle.
So the standout is Sunday the 19th. The morning session is the pick – the most powerful swell of the run (6 ft, 302 energy), with light wind. It’s for intermediates and up. The afternoon is bigger and rougher, so only for the experienced crew. It’s a long-range call, so keep an eye on it, but that’s your best bet.
Rusty, out.
