The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’re looking at a sixteen-day window for Playa de Tranqueru, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a bit of a slow burner. We’ve got some decent pulse mid-week, but you’ll be working for the scraps early on. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, nothing to write home about.
Wednesday the 19th is a total write-off. We’re talking tiny 1.0ft slop from the NNW, with a weak 7-second period. The combined energy is a measly 20 – that’s flat. Glassy conditions in the morning but there’s just nothing to ride. The afternoon stays poor with a light cross-onshore breeze on top of rubbish 1ft swell.
Thursday the 20th sees a jump in size, but the quality is still a struggle. We’ve got 5ft to 5ft from the NW and NNW, with periods around 8-10 seconds. The combined energy climbs into the moderate range (399 to 469), but it’s all cross-onshore, making it a messy, lumpy burger. The wind’s just light, but it’s the wrong direction, so it’s a marginal day at best.
Friday the 21st is the biggest push of the week. Swell hits 6ft from the NNW, with a period of 10 seconds. The energy is solid (762 to 962), but the cross and cross-onshore wind is a killer. It’s a choppy, blown-out mess. For a beach break, that’s not a surf day; honestly, that kind of wind and swell setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd drop back down. The swell fades to 4ft-5ft, but the wind is mixed. Saturday has a light cross-onshore, Sunday afternoon actually turns glassy. The combined energy is low (118 to 264), and the period is short (7-8 seconds). We’re back to “surfable but very ordinary.” Sunday afternoon is the pick of the two, but it’s not a standout.
Monday the 24th through Wednesday the 27th is a real desert. The swell drops to 0.7ft-6ft, with periods all over the shop. Winds are mostly glassy or light, but the swell is either too small or too short period. The combined energy barely cracks 100 most days. Wednesday the 26th afternoon has a 6ft windswell from the WNW with a 5-second period – that’s pure chop.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Friday the 28th morning is our first true standout. We’ve got 4ft of NW groundswell with a 9-second period, and the wind is dead calm – glassy. The combined energy is a solid 287, and the forecast says “expect good surf conditions.” That’s the window. The swell direction matches the optimum (NW), and it’s clean. This is a proper session, just keep in mind the 4ft means it’s fine for intermediates.
Saturday the 29th morning is another good one. Very similar: 4ft NW swell, 9-second period, glassy conditions with a light WNW air, and energy at 278. Another morning of clean, shoulder-high waves. The afternoon gets blown out by a strong N wind, so get your fill early.
After that, Sunday the 30th through Monday the 31st sees the swell holding but the wind turns onshore again, dropping the quality back to poor. The 31st afternoon actually has 6ft of NW swell, but with a light cross-onshore, it’s just a messy wall.
Tuesday the 1st of September and Wednesday the 2nd are more of the same: 4ft-6ft NW swell, cross-onshore wind, and marginal conditions. The energy is moderate (up to 508), but the wind kills it.
Thursday the 3rd is the last day, and we’re fading out with 3ft from the NW, an 8-second period, and a light cross-shore. Not worth the trip.
The best on offer: Your clear windows are Friday the 28th morning and Saturday the 29th morning. The swell is consistent NW groundswell, the period is solid, and the glassy wind will make it absolutely clean. Don’t sleep on it.
Rusty.
