The Lowdown
Right, gather 'round. Rusty here. Let's be straight with you: this is a tough run for Playa de Otur.
The 16-day window is basically a write-off for decent surf. There are no good options on offer. The whole stretch is plagued by tiny, weak waves and poor surf conditions. The combined swell energy is very low, with values mostly stuck in the double-digit range, and only occasionally nudging into the low triple digits, like 153 (moderate energy) on the 6th of August morning, but it’s paired with a poor setup. The water temperature sits at 68.2°, which is about average for the time of year, but that won't help the waves.
We start with a bit of a gap of good surf right from the beginning. The first few days are all "poor surf conditions" with scores of zero. Morning of the 6th of August might show a 3.3ft swell from the NNW, but it's a short-period 8 seconds with a cross wind, leaving it a mess. The afternoon is worse. The 7th and 8th of August are even smaller, with a 1.3ft glassy morning on the 8th being the only prettiness, but there's no push to it.
The 9th of August morning brings a glassy 2.3ft from the NW with a 10-second period, and the combined energy hits 113 (moderate). It's the best looking window in the whole forecast, but “best” here is a low bar. It’s small, clean, and maybe a log will work. The 11th of August morning has a similar glassy 2.3ft from the NW with a 10-second period and 102 energy, but again, it’s tiny. There are some glassy mornings scattered through the second week, but the swell never gets over 3.0ft until the 18th of August.
Towards the end of the run, the 18th of August sees a jump in size to 5.6ft from the NNW with a short 8-second period, and the energy jumps to 355 (moderate-strong). But the wind is a solid 12 mph from the NE, making it a choppy, onshore mess. The 19th of August has a similar story with a 4.3ft swell but poor winds. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
For a consistent break like Playa de Otur, this blank run is a bit of a bummer, but it tends not to stay poor for long. Forecasts can change. For now, leave the boards in the car.
