The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a rough start. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor surf conditions. The first decent opportunity doesn’t show up until the morning of Monday the 28th of July. That’s a good ten days of waiting, so don’t bother checking the cam until then.
The main spot on the radar is Playa de Ereaga. The water temp is sitting at 75°, which is a whopping 6° warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s very unusual. You’ll be surfing in a bath, but the waves are the problem.
Monday 28th July (Morning): We finally get a bit of life. The wind is light from the east, a clean offshore breeze, and there’s a 3ft swell from the NNW with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (145). It’s surfable, but don’t expect barrels. It’s just something to get wet on.
Tuesday 29th July (Morning): This is the standout. The wind is calm, glassy conditions. We’ve got a 4ft groundswell from the NNW with a period of 11 seconds. The combined energy jumps up to strong (437). This is the best looking window of the whole forecast. The long period will give it proper shape, but remember, at a sheltered beach like this, it might break a little straight. Still, for the area, this is the one to aim for.
Wednesday 30th July (Morning): Another solid morning. Glassy conditions again with a 4ft swell from the NNW (11 second period). The energy is still strong (427). This is a second good option, but Tuesday morning is the pick of the bunch.
After that, the swell fades out again. The 31st of July and 1st of August have some small, ordinary waves, but nothing to get excited about. By the 2nd of August, the wind swings around and chops it up.
So, to wrap it up: the first week and a half is a write-off. The best bet is the morning of the 29th of July, with the 30th of July morning as a close second. Look for that glassy, clean NNW groundswell.
Rusty.
