The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight up: the 16-day window for Playa de Ereaga is about as quiet as a Monday morning in winter. There’s really no proper surf on offer for the next couple of weeks. The first few days are utterly flat and blown-out, and even when the swell does try to lift, the conditions just don’t line up. This is a sheltered spot that rarely breaks anyway, so a long run of poor-to-ordinary waves isn’t a shock. Still, it’s a bit of a bummer, with the combined swell energy barely tickling the 100-mark for most of the first week, maxing out at 592 (moderate energy) on Friday the 21st, but that comes with a messy cross-onshore wind and choppy surf. Not worth paddling for.
You’d have to wait all the way to the gap from the start until around Friday the 28th of August before things get even remotely interesting. That’s a solid nine days of flat or junk waves. Come Friday the 28th, there’s a hint of hope: early morning sees 4ft of NW swell with a 10-second period, and clean conditions thanks to light offshore SSE wind at 3 mph. The combined energy is 245 (moderate). It’s surfable, but still very ordinary—not something to call in sick for.
Then Saturday the 29th morning looks like the best of the lot: again 4ft from the NW, but period drops to 8 seconds. However, the wind is nil—completely glassy, zero mph—making it clean as a whistle. Combined energy is 156 (moderate). For a break that rarely comes together, this is the standout. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual.
After that, it’s back to mediocrity. The very end of the forecast, Wednesday the 2nd of September morning, shows 4ft from the NW (9-second period) with glassy conditions and a combined energy of 247 (moderate). Another clean window, but still nothing to get excited about.
So, there’s no proper standout session. If you’re desperate, the Saturday the 29th morning glass-off is your best bet—small, clean, and quiet. But if you’re after decent power, look elsewhere.
Rusty.
