The Lowdown
Alright, grab your board and let’s talk about the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a slow burn, to be honest. The first stretch is looking pretty underwhelming. We’ve got a lot of small, weak surf that’s mostly just going to be a bump on the beach. If you’re desperate, there are a few knee-high options, but you’ll be hunting for anything with a pulse. The overall energy is low, and the wind isn’t doing us any favors early on.
Things really start to get interesting from August 29th onward. That’s when we see a proper pulse of energy start to build. The confidence is moderate right now, being that far out, but it looks like the swell is going to pick up and hold some size. This is where the standout window is. Keep your eyes on the end of the month and those first few days of September.
Let’s break it down day by day.
For Monday the 17th and Tuesday the 18th, the surf is tiny. We’re looking at around 2.3ft to 2.6ft of swell, mostly from the SSW, with a period of 14-16 seconds. That long period is nice, but with that little size, it’s just not doing much. The water is a very warm 72.9°, nearly three degrees above normal, which is pretty wild for this time of year. The wind is light, sometimes cross-onshore, so it’s not totally blown out, but the wave comment says it all: poor surf conditions. There’s just no push.
Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th stay in that same holding pattern. We’ve got around 2.6ft to 3ft of swell from the SSW, periods around 14-16 seconds. The wind is light and mostly onshore, but the energy is still weak. The combined energy is in the low to mid 300s, which is that moderate range but on the lower end. It’s still not enough to make it worth your while. This is a good time to tune your quiver or work on your pop-up.
Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd are more of the same, maybe even a touch smaller. Swell drops to 1.6ft to 2.3ft from the SSW. The period stays around 13-15 seconds. It’s all a bit lackluster. There’s a slight cross-onshore wind, and the wave comments are all “poor surf conditions” or “marginal forecast.” This is a lean stretch. You could probably find a fun little wave on a longboard if you’re in the right place, but there’s nothing to get excited about.
Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th see the swell swing around to the SW, with periods jumping up. On Sunday, we get a longer period of 18-19 seconds, which is nice to see, but the size is still tiny at 1.6ft to 2ft. That’s a bit of a tease. A long period groundswell with no size is just a rise and fall. The energy numbers are moderate, but the lack of height kills it. Still, the wind is light and variable, so if you’re really keen, you might find a little clean ankle-to-knee-high wave.
From Tuesday the 25th through Thursday the 27th, we stay in this pretty quiet pattern. Swell remains small, around 2ft to 2.3ft from the SW. Periods stay in the 14-16 second range. The wind is light but mostly cross-onshore. There’s a bit more chop in the water on the 25th. These are all low-score days, it’s just not happening. This is a real lull. Days of nothing much to recommend.
Then on Friday the 28th, we start to see a shift. The swell is still small, around 2ft to 2.3ft, but the period jumps up to 20 seconds in the afternoon. That’s a very long period groundswell, which is a sign of something bigger behind it. The energy is starting to build, with the combined energy reaching the 500s. It’s still small, but you can feel the ocean start to wake up.
And here’s where it gets good. The standout window is Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th of August. This is when
