The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on the menu for Oceanside Harbor over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you – it’s a slow start and a long stretch of mediocrity before we see any real pulse.
Right now, we’re in a flat spell. The first few days are basically a write-off. Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th are showing tiny swell around 2 ft to 3 ft, and the wind is either cross-on or onshore, making for poor, choppy conditions. The water temp is sitting at 72°, which is a solid 5° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a real standout, bathwater warm but not much else to get excited about.
We’ve got a long gap of nothing worth paddling out for. From Friday the 17th right through to around Wednesday the 23rd, the surf is small and the wind is mostly messy. You’ll see some swell energy building, but the wind is never truly offshore enough to clean it up. The waves are weak and the surface is lumpy.
The first real hint of something better shows up on Thursday the 24th of July. There’s a 2 ft swell from the SW, but the period jumps to 24 seconds – that’s a very long period groundswell. The wind is onshore, but it’s light, so the harbor could be tidy. This is a long-period swell, so it’s going to be best for the jetties and reefs, not the beach break. It’s a bit of a tease.
Then the real standout window opens up starting Monday the 27th of July. The swell picks up to 4 ft from the SSW with a period of 18-19 seconds, and the wave energy is strong. The wind is light and cross-onshore, so expect cleanish conditions with small ripples. This is the best run of the whole outlook. The swell direction from the SSW lines up nicely with the harbor’s exposure. The waves will have real shape and power, but with that long period, it’ll break straight at the beach – better on the jetties. This is the one to circle on your calendar.
Tuesday the 28th keeps the quality with 4 ft to 5 ft SSW swell, lighter winds, and strong energy. Still good.
After that, the swell starts to fade through the end of July and into August, with the energy dropping off. The winds become more cross-on again, and the surf gets smaller and choppier. The last day of the forecast, Saturday the 1st of August, has 5 ft SSW swell but the period drops to 12 seconds and the wind is cross-on, so it’s gonna be a messy, lumpy mess.
So, the honest truth? There’s a long, flat, poor start. The real standout is the Monday the 27th to Tuesday the 28th window. That’s your best bet for some proper, powerful, clean waves. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or just plain poor. Keep your eyes on that late July pulse.
Rusty.
