Table - best surf conditions forecast for Number Threes over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Number Threes has got cookin’ for us. This is a solid, exposed reef setup that’s usually consistent, but man, the next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag. We’re starting off with a stubborn cross-off wind that’s just not letting up, so the early part looks pretty average.
Sunday the 12th is a non-starter. We’ve got a 6ft swell from the ENE, but it’s getting hammered by a 25 mph cross-off wind. The water’s sitting at 79°, which is about average for this time of year. The combined energy is moderate (794), but the conditions are just too messy to even think about paddling out. Monday and Tuesday don’t get much better – still fresh cross-off breezes and marginal surf. The swell drops right off on Tuesday to a tiny 2ft from the SW, with a long 14-second period, but the energy is weak (285) and the wind is still a problem.
We’ve got a big gap of poor conditions through Wednesday the 15th, Thursday the 16th, and Friday the 17th. The swell stays small, under 3ft, and that persistent ENE wind, often 19-22 mph, keeps it choppy and uninviting. The combined energy is weak, mostly in the 200-400 range. Not a lot to get excited about.
Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are still a write-off – fresh breeze, small swell, poor surf. The real story here is how long this run of average to poor surf is. It’s not until the tail end of the window that we finally see a light.
Now, let’s talk about the one true standout. On Monday the 27th of July, things finally come together. The morning starts with a gentle 9 mph cross-off breeze from the ENE, and the swell is a clean 3ft from the E with a solid 15-second period. That’s proper groundswell, and for a reef like Number Threes, that long period is going to mean some nice, lined-up waves. The combined energy is moderate (655), and the afternoon looks even better with a score of 3 out of 10 and a forecast of “expect very good surf conditions.” This is the best on offer, no question. It’s a Monday, so crowds might be a bit less, but it’s an exposed break that can get busy, so keep that in mind.
Before that, we do have a little pulse on the 22nd and 23rd of July, with 5ft to 6ft ENE swell, but the period is a short 6-7 seconds and the wind is still a fresh 19 mph cross-off. It’s marginal, and the short period means it’ll be a bit bumpy and less powerful. Really, only the 27th is worth marking on the calendar.
So, overall, it’s a long wait for a clean window. The first two weeks are mostly a washout, but that last Monday is a genuine glimmer. Keep an eye on the forecasts, ‘cause this one could be a beauty.
