Alright, Rusty again, giving it to you in feet and miles per hour. This stretch is a tough nut to crack for surfers.
The only spot in the game is Number Threes – a reef break for the advanced crew. It's exposed, loves a swell from the SSE, but we ain't getting that. Water temp is 80°, pretty normal for this time of year.
Starting Tuesday, July 7th, we’ve got 8ft swell from the ENE with an 8-second window, but the cross-off wind is howling at 25 mph. The combined energy is moderate – reading 963. It’s all chunky but poor quality. This holds through the end of the week, with waves around 7ft to 7ft, but that fresh to strong breeze from the ENE kills it. A few days the swell period drops to 7 seconds – short period junk. No standouts.
Come the weekend of July 12th, the swell drops a touch but the wind stays cross-off and strong. Combined energy is still moderate (885 Sunday morning). The surf is marginal at best. With 20-25 mph winds, this is more of a kite-surfing scene than clean paddle surfing.
Then we hit a blank run. From July 15th Wednesday through July 17th Friday, the swell gets small and weird. Wednesday afternoon throws a 2ft from the SSW with a very long 18-second period, but with 20 mph cross-off wind and only 589 energy, it’s a no-go. The rest through Friday is mostly poor or tiny. Saturday, July 18th shows a hint – 4ft from the east with an 11-second period, but still cross-off wind. Not enough.
The only real light is Sunday, July 19th. We see 8ft from the ENE with an 8-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 1063 – a moderate to strong pulse. Still, the wind is cross-off from the ENE at 22 mph, and it’s listed as marginal. It carries into Monday, July 20th, with 8ft and 1113 energy. That’s the best on offer, but it’s way out and the wind is the same stubborn cross-off. For experts only – over 8ft is too big for beginners. The short 8-second period means it’ll be a bit lumpy, not that clean groundswell. This is a promising but uncertain standout.
After that, it settles back to around 7ft with the same cross-off pattern through to July 22nd, Wednesday. Nothing clean, no glass. Crowds are likely at Number Threes, but you’re not missing clean waves.
Hang in there, things can flip.
Rusty.
