Table - best surf conditions forecast for Nobbys Reef over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here again. Let's break it down for Nobbys Reef, the reef break that only really gets going with a solid SE swell and is known to be a bit inconsistent. For the advanced crew only. Water temp is running normal for this time of year, nothing wild.
First decent window hits Saturday, July 11th morning. A clean 4ft SE swell, around 9 seconds, with a light offshore wind out of the NW at 6 mph. Wave energy is moderate at 375. Not a big swell, but with that offshore breeze it’ll be clean and fun. Crowds can pop up sometimes, just a heads up.
Saturday afternoon drops to a 3ft ESE groundswell with a longer period of 11 seconds and a light offshore. Energy is still solid at 313. Clean again.
Sunday, July 12th morning brings a 3ft SE swell, 10 second period, but the wind picks up to 15 mph offshore from the WNW. Energy is down to 162. Still rideable but weaker. Afternoon drops to 2ft and cross-off, energy only 70. Not worth suiting up.
Monday 13th and Tuesday 14th are tiny – 2ft down to 0.9ft. Energy is under 100, barely a ripple. Even with some offshore wind, there’s nothing to ride.
Wednesday, July 15th is a big shift: an 8ft S swell with a 10-second period, and the energy rockets to 1232. That’s proper power. But the wind is cross-shore from the SW at 18 mph, turning it lumpy. This is experts-only territory. In the afternoon it goes cross-on, energy hits 2014, and it’s messy. Think kite surf conditions more than paddle.
Thursday, July 16th morning still has a 7ft S swell, cross-on wind and rain. Energy at 971. Not pretty. But the afternoon turns glassy with a 6ft SSE swell – short period, 7 seconds, but the wind goes dead calm from the NE at 3 mph. Energy 369. That’s a clean, powerful window for experienced surfers.
Friday, July 17th drops to 4-5ft but it’s cross-on from the S with 6-second period. Choppy and weak. Over the weekend of the 18-19th, it’s mostly onshore, but Sunday, July 19th morning shows a clean 3ft E swell with a light offshore NNW wind at 6 mph. Energy 214. Small but clean.
Monday, July 20th is a standout. Both morning and afternoon have 4ft E swell, 9-second period, with consistent offshore winds from the NNW and NW at 9-12 mph. Energy is 359 and 351. That’s clean, consistent, and the pick of the week.
Tuesday, July 21st is similar size but wind goes cross-off in the morning and cross-on in the afternoon. The morning could still be clean.
Wednesday, July 22nd morning is magic – glassy conditions, 4ft S swell, energy 359. That early glass-off is a rare treat.
Thursday, July 23rd morning delivers clean 4ft S swell, offshore wind, period 10 seconds, energy 308. Afternoon is 3ft and gentle offshore. Both solid.
From Friday, July 24th onward it fades quickly. Swell runs 2ft down to 1ft through Sunday, July 26th. Energy collapses below 200 and then under 100. There’s a 15-second period on Friday the 24th morning but with only 2ft, it’s a non-event. After that it’s flat.
Best bets: Saturday, July 11th morning for clean, fun surf, and Monday, July 20th morning for consistent, clean waves. Thursday, July 16th afternoon is a wildcard with glassy 6ft swell for the brave. The second week has some nice clean windows mid-week (22-23 July). After that, a long stretch of nothing – but forecasts can always change.
Rusty.
