The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's have a look at what's coming up for Nobbys Reef. Straight up, the next fortnight and a bit is mostly a write-off for a decent paddle at this spot, so don't get your hopes up.
We're looking at a long dry spell starting now. The first real chance of anything even worth a mention doesn't roll around until Monday the 31st of August. Before that, it's pretty grim. The swell is tiny and the wind is messy, keeping the combined energy low, usually under 200 units, so there's just no power in the water. The water temp is sitting at 64°F, which is about average for this time of year, nothing wild.
Monday the 31st of August morning is our first real standout. It's not big, but you'll get some 3ft swell from the south with a period of 9 seconds, offering moderate energy (253). The wind will be light offshore from the NNW, so it'll be clean and lined up. Keep in mind this spot is inconsistent, so it might not be doing much even then, but if it's running, it could be a nice little window before it picks up again.
Then hold onto your hat for Thursday the 3rd of September morning. That's the best of the whole outlook. We get a bump up to 5ft from the SSE with an 8-second period, so not a long groundswell but it packs a punch with combined energy hitting 357. The wind will be a solid 16 mph offshore from the NW, giving you a favourable cross-off breeze. It'll be clean and have a bit of push, but that size makes it a bit much for beginners. This is a reef break and advanced only, so only the experienced crew should be out there.
After that, it's pretty much back to rubbish through the first week of September, with onshore winds and small, weak swell killing the vibe. There's a gap of several days with no real recommendations, so don't plan your week around it.
So, to boil it down: ignore the next week and a half, keep an eye on the morning of Monday the 31st of August for a clean but inconsistent session, and if you're keen and skilled, the morning of Thursday the 3rd of September is the one to target.
Rusty.
