The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for Nobbys Reef. It’s a tricky outlook, to be honest. The run of surf is pretty ordinary for the first week, but there’s a proper standout window that pops up toward the end of the fortnight that’s worth keeping an eye on.
The first serious call is a bit of a wait. We’ve got nothing worth paddling out for on Friday the 17th or Saturday the 18th – poor conditions with onshore winds and weak, short-period swell. Sunday the 19th is only marginal at best, with a moderate energy (1094) 7ft easterly swell, but the wind is still on it, so it’s messy. Monday the 20th is still a write-off.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Tuesday the 21st. The morning session at Nobbys Reef sees a clean 4ft swell from the ENE, with a light offshore wind from the NNW. The wave energy is moderate (322), and the 10-second period should give it some shape. It’s small, but clean. That’s the best of the first week, but it’s far from a standout.
Then we hit a flat spell. Wednesday the 22nd through to Sunday the 26th of July is mostly small and weak, with heights dropping below 3ft and energy levels falling into the double digits. It’s a proper gap of a few days with nothing to get excited about. The water temp is about 65°, which is pretty normal for this time of year.
Now, here’s the one that really stands out. Friday the 24th of July – the morning session at Nobbys Reef is the pick of the whole 16-day window. We’ve got a 8ft southerly swell, very strong energy (1895), and a clean offshore wind from the WSW. This is proper groundswell. The 9-second period is a bit short, but the size and clean conditions make it a serious option for experienced surfers. This is way too big for beginners. Expect good, powerful waves. Crowds are possible here, so be ready for company.
After that, the swell drops off quickly. The rest of the month and into August is a mix of small, weak, or onshore conditions. The morning of Monday the 27th is glassy but tiny at 2ft. Tuesday the 28th has a consistent offshore wind but small 3ft southerly swell – it’s clean, but not a standout. The long-range call on Saturday the 1st of August shows a 3ft southerly swell with a very long 17-second period and offshore wind, but the energy is moderate (610) and the forecast is less certain. It’s promising but not a lock.
So, keep your eyes on Friday the 24th of July for the best session. The rest is a waiting game.
Rusty.
