Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what we’ve got coming up for Nobbys Reef.
It’s a bit of a mixed bag for the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a slow start, not much to get excited about initially, but there are a few windows that’ll get the blood pumping, especially for the crew who can handle a bit of size.
The first solid chance rolls in on Saturday, July 4th. The morning session is the pick, with clean 3 ft southerly swell rolling in. The wind will be light and cross-offshore, keeping the surface tidy. The combined energy is moderate at 297, so there’s enough push to make it fun on the reef. It’s a bit inconsistent, so patience will be key, and with crowds being possible, you’ll want to be early.
Things get a bit messy from Sunday through the middle of the week. Swell kicks up over 7 ft but the wind swings onshore and gets choppy. Not worth your time unless you’re after a fight.
Now, the highlight in this run is Thursday, July 9th. The swell settles to a clean 6 ft from the southeast, and we’re looking at glassy conditions in the afternoon with near-zero wind. The combined energy is solid at 638, meaning there’s a nice amount of grunt behind those waves. This is the standout session for Nobbys Reef, offering clean, lined-up waves for the advanced crew.
The following Tuesday, July 14th, is another cracking prospect. We get a building southerly groundswell, pushing 6 ft in the morning and 7 ft in the afternoon, with clean offshore northwesterly winds the whole day. The energy jumps to 964 (moderate-strong), and with the offshore breeze grooming it, those reef waves should be holding a nice shape. Again, it’s an inconsistent spot, and it’ll draw a crowd when it’s firing.
We drop back to small, ordinary surf for a few days after that. The 16th and 17th see the swell getting too big and unruly for this break, with 10 ft and 13 ft waves, respectively – that’s expert territory only, and even then, the conditions look a bit rough.
The best long-range call is Saturday, July 18th. Swell eases to a clean 8 ft from the southeast with a very long period of 12 seconds, and light cross-offshore wind. The combined energy is huge at 2186, so the reef will be absolutely loaded with power. This swell will be best for the experienced crew, offering long, grinding lines. It’s still two weeks out, so take it as promising but not locked in.
To wrap it up, if you’re choosing your sessions, the absolute standouts are Thursday, July 9th and Tuesday, July 14th. Circle those dates. The rest is either too small, too windy, or too big for comfort.
Stay wet, stay keen.
Rusty.
