Alright, Rusty here. Let's get into it. This is a tricky 16-day run for us at Nobbys Reef, a solid, exposed advanced reef break. We've got a massive storm brewing early on that's going to shut things down before we get a few cleaner windows later.
Right now, the start is a write-off. We're looking at a Monday with 10ft to 8ft of short-period, onshore-crumbled junk from the SSE and strong winds. It's pure chaos.
Tuesday the 7th is a nightmare. The swell jumps to 12ft from the SSE with a big period of 11 seconds, and the combined energy readings are off the charts (4501 and 2586). This is way, way too big for this spot—expert only, and even then, it's going to be a washing machine with a cross-chop. Forget it.
We've got a real gap of nothingness from then through Thursday the 9th. The waves are dropping, but the wind stays onshore or cross-shore, and the quality is just poor. You're better off doing something else.
Friday the 10th is your standout. Finally, the wind swings offshore, switching to a light W/WSW breeze. We've got clean 6ft to 6ft swell from the SE with a 10-second period. The combined energy is still moderate (695), but it's clean and lined up. This is the call for anyone who can handle an inconsistent, advanced reef. It's a fairly small window, but it will be the best surf of the first week.
Saturday the 11th is also good. The swell drops to 4ft from the SE, period shortens to 9 seconds, but we get true offshore NW wind in the morning. Light, clean, and glassy. It'll be a fun size for the more skilled crew, but dropping fast.
Sunday the 12th hangs on with 3ft from the ESE and offshore NNW wind, but the energy is fading (244). You'll get a couple, but it's very ordinary.
Monday the 13th through Tuesday the 14th is another gap. The swell bottoms out and then rebuilds but with poor direction and funky winds. Not worth the paddle.
Wednesday the 15th is the second standout. This is a longer-range call, so keep an eye on it. We get clean 7ft swell from the S, a 9-second period, and gentle offshore WNW wind. The combined energy is strong (1216), and the report says it's excellent for experienced surfers. This is the one to circle on the calendar if you can handle a bigger, more powerful wave at an inconsistent spot. It might be a bit clean for a beach break, but at a reef like this, it should be proper.
After that, the wind turns horrendous again. From Thursday the 16th through the end of the run, we are hammered by strong S/SSE winds and lumpy, onshore junk. Small, messy, and not worth your time.
To sum it up: avoid this place completely for the first week until Friday the 10th. That Friday morning, and Wednesday the 15th, are your best bets. It's an inconsistent, expert-only reef and it might get crowded, but when it's on, it's on. For the rest of the time, it's a kite surfer's playground in the onshore wind, not a paddle surfer's.
That's the word. Be patient.
Rusty.
