The Lowdown
Yo, Nobbys Reef crew, Rusty here. Let's talk about the next 16 days at this particular spot. We've got a real mixed bag of a forecast, with some killer windows, a couple of serious swell events that'll keep the lineup local, and some flat spells to work around.
The opening salvos come on Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st. Monday morning is the standout early call: clean, glassy conditions with a solid 5ft of east swell running at 11 seconds. The energy is moderate (699), and it's a reef setup, so that's a proper session for the advanced crew. Monday afternoon gets a bit scratchy with a cross-on wind, so morning is the go. Tuesday morning sees a drop in size to 4ft and the wind goes cross-offshore, keeping it clean but the overall energy is weaker (325). The surf is still there, but it's not the standout.
We then hit a bit of a lull mid-week. Wednesday the 22nd through Thursday the 23rd see small, weak waves (2ft to 3ft) with very low energy readings (down to 53). It's not worth paddling out for. The wind is clean, but there's just no juice.
The next real action pops up late on Friday the 24th. A new S swell arrives, pushing 6ft by Friday morning. The wind is cross-off and clean, and the energy is strong (513). Friday afternoon cleans up even more with glassy conditions and 5ft swell. This is a solid window for the weekend. Saturday the 25th is a bit trickier with a mix of conditions, but the swell is still present. Sunday the 26th morning is another beauty: 6ft of S swell with cross-off wind and clean faces, energy is pumping at 519. The afternoon swings onshore, so get it early.
Then, hold onto your boards. We get a massive spike in swell from Thursday the 30th of July through to Friday the 31st. The data shows a 10ft to 12ft south swell with a very long period (13 seconds on Friday). The combined energy is off the charts (2914 to 6075). This is a serious, proper groundswell. For a reef like Nobbys, this is expert-only territory. The swell direction is optimum, and the wind is favorable on Thursday (glass), but the sheer size will make it a heavy, dangerous wave. This is a big swell event, not for beginners.
That size backs down into Saturday the 1st of August, with 8ft of SSE swell and glassy conditions. The energy is still very strong (1490). The data says it's excellent for experienced surfers, but that's still a big wave for the average punter.
The following week, from Monday the 3rd, the surf settles back down. Expect clean, glassy conditions on Monday morning with a 6ft south swell, dropping off through the week. Good solid waves, but nothing like the epic swell of the previous week.
The one true standout in this whole run is undeniably the morning of Thursday the 30th of July. We've got a 10ft south swell, very long period, glassy offshores, and the reef is exposed. That's a proper, heavy, expert session. The next best, and more accessible, is the morning of Sunday the 26th of July: 6ft, clean cross-off wind, and a solid south swell. For a classic, clean reef session, that's your ticket. Crowds are possible here, so get in early.
So, to sum it up: a few days of clean but small surf, a solid weekend of fun waves, a massive, expert-only groundswell, then a return to cleaner, smaller conditions. Get on it.
