Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming up for Nobbys Reef.
The next week and a half is mostly a rough ride, but there are two bright spots on the horizon if you’re patient. The water’s sitting at 67°F, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, nothing wild there.
We start off small and average on July 3rd. Waves are tiny, only about 1ft from the east, with a bit of a breeze from the west-northwest. It’s rideable if you’re desperate, but honestly, it’s poor. That pattern hangs around through the 4th, with a slight bump to 2ft on Saturday morning and a clean westerly cross-offshore wind, but the swell is short-period and weak. The energy is still low (164).
Things go downhill fast on the 5th. Sunday pushes up to 8ft to 10ft from the south, but that wind turns cross-onshore and it gets messy. The energy jumps way up (1565), but it’s not usable. Same story Monday the 6th and Tuesday the 7th – big wind, lumpy, rainy. Not worth paddling out unless you want a beating.
Wednesday the 8th is our first proper standout. Morning session looks solid: 7ft south-east swell, a light westerly cross-offshore breeze, and the energy is strong (1044). It’s a reef break, so the long-period swell (10 seconds) should line up nicely. This is for experienced surfers only — that size is too much for beginners. Crowds are possible here, so keep an eye on that.
After that, we settle back into ordinary, small stuff from the 9th through the 12th. July 13th (Monday) brings another spike: afternoon sees 6ft from the south, clean offshore wind from the west-northwest, and good energy (708). That’s a solid, clean session, but again, more for the experienced crew.
The real standout, though, is Saturday July 18th. After a week of poor conditions and big winds, we get a sudden shift. Morning has 6ft from the south-southwest with light cross-offshore winds and strong energy (1055). But the afternoon is the cherry: 10ft from the south, a 12-second groundswell, glassy conditions with an easterly breeze barely there. The energy is pumping (2111). This is big, clean, and powerful. It’s too big for beginners and even most intermediates – this is for experts only. But if you can handle it, that’s the session to aim for. The reef should handle that long-period energy well, but be aware it might break a bit straight at times.
Overall, there’s a big gap of poor or messy surf from the 5th to the 7th, then a good window on the 8th, then another quiet spell until the 18th delivers the goods. Stay patient.
