G'day, it's Rusty. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Nobbys Reef. Things kick off with a bit of promise, then we've got a solid run of big and messy conditions before a real standout window appears. The water temp's sitting at 19° — that's pretty average for this time of year, nothing to write home about.
The first real chance to get wet is Saturday morning, July 4th. We've got a clean 4ft swell rolling in from the south with a 12-second period, giving it some decent energy (392). The wind's a gentle offshore from the WNW, so it'll be smooth out there. Nobbys Reef is exposed to the south, and this south swell is right in its wheelhouse. It's an advanced reef break that's inconsistent and can get crowded sometimes, but for a Saturday morning, this is a solid little session.
Then the wheels fall off. Sunday July 5th sees a big S swell jump up to 10ft with a short 11-second period, but the wind is howling from the S at 30 km/h, cross-onshore. That's a lot of combined energy (2145) but it's lumpy, messy, and too big for most — expert-only and even then, it's rough. This messy, blown-out trend holds right through the next few days with big swell hanging around over 8ft, all cross or cross-onshore wind, and combined energy numbers well into the thousands. Sunday afternoon, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday are all poor – you'd be mad to paddle out. For kite surfers though, with those strong cross-onshore winds and solid swell, it could look appealing.
Now, here's the standout. Friday July 10th. The morning window is where it's at – the swell has dropped to a more manageable 8ft from the SSE with an 11-second period, and the wind is glassy, dead calm. That's a rare treat. The combined energy is still significant at 1244, and it's marked as excellent for experienced surfers. This is your best bet right here – clean, powerful, and you'll have the place to yourself if you're early. Remember though, at this size (over 7ft), it's for experienced surfers only.
Saturday July 11th morning offers a smaller 5ft SSE swell (434 combined energy) with a clean cross-offshore WNW breeze at 10 km/h. It's a good, cruisy option, but nothing like the Friday stand-out.
After that, things taper off. Sunday July 12th and Monday July 13th have tiny 1ft to 3ft swell, clean but hardly worth the paddle. There's about a 5-day gap of very ordinary, small surf.
Then around Tuesday July 14th, a big S swell starts building again — 12ft by afternoon, with strong cross-shore wind at 30 km/h. Too big and windy for safe surfing.
Wednesday July 15th morning is similar: 12ft from the S, combined energy 3853, fresh cross-shore wind. Another one for the kite crew or the brave experts only.
The outlook through mid-July keeps delivering solid swell but often with messy wind. Thursday July 16th through to Saturday July 18th is lumpy and rough again. However, Sunday July 19th morning pops up as another decent option: 8ft from the SSE (1351 combined energy), with a clean cross-offshore SW breeze at 15 km/h. Marked as excellent for experienced surfers. That's your second-week standout, but it's a long way off — less certain, but worth keeping an eye on.
Rusty.
