The Lowdown
Alright, let’s look at what’s cooking for Nobbys Reef. This spot is a reef break, inconsistent, and it needs a real swell to fire. Over the next couple of weeks, the wave energy is all over the board, so we’re in for a long, slow grind until something decent shows.
The first few days are a total loss. Wednesday the 15th is a mess with strong cross-shore wind, rain, and a short, lumpy swell. The energy is moderate (237) but the conditions are just poor. Thursday and Friday are no better with onshore wind and chop. Saturday and Sunday the 18th and 19th see a little more size, but the wind is onshore and the energy is moderate (319 to 338), with messy waves. Sunday the 19th has a longer 11 second swell, but the cross-onshore wind ruins it. Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st finally offer a clean window. Tuesday morning the 21st has a light offshore wind from the NNW, a clean 1.3m east swell at 10 seconds, and moderate energy (403). It’s not big, but it’ll be clean and lined up. The water temp is about average for the season.
The real standout is Thursday the 23rd. This is the best of the whole run. We’ve got a gentle offshore wind from the NW, holding clean all day. The swell is a consistent 1.5m from the east with a nice 11 second period, giving proper power. The combined energy is moderate (571), but it’s quality energy. This is the day to mark. It’s not a huge swell, so it’s fine for a good surfer, and the reef will really shape up that long period. The crowd can be *sometimes* an issue, but with that clean offshore wind, it’ll be worth the paddle.
After that, the swell drops. Friday the 24th is still clean in the morning (1.4m, 11 seconds), but the afternoon gets chopped by a south wind. Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th are marginal. Sunday the 26th morning has a spike of 1.5m from the south, but it’s a short 7 second period and the wind is light offshore – clean but weak and inconsistent. The energy is moderate (522). The last week into the end of the month is very small, with light offshore winds, but the swell drops under 1.0m and the energy is weak (87 to 207). It’s surfable but very ordinary.
Bottom line: It’s a long wait for the good stuff. The first week is a bust. The 21st is a small clean option, but Thursday the 23rd is the clear winner. If you can wait, that’s your day. The rest is mostly small and clean, but not worth the drive.
