Table - best surf conditions forecast for Nobbys Reef over the next 16 days.
Righto, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for this stretch.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but the real story for this period is Nobbys Reef. It’s an exposed reef setup that needs a good SE swell, and it’s *inconsistent*, so when it turns on, you gotta be on it. The water temp is sitting at 66°F, which is bang on average for this time of year.
The first real action kicks off Thursday morning, the 9th of July. That’s a solid 7ft SE swell, with a 10-second period, 862 combined energy – that’s a moderate punch. The wind is a light WSW cross-off, keeping things clean. This is a proper standout. The swell matches the optimum direction, and the energy is good. You’ll be looking at clean, well-shaped waves. It’s a reef, so it’s for the advanced crew, and crowds are *sometimes* an issue, so you might have some company.
Friday morning, the 10th, is another good call. Swell drops slightly to 6ft from the SE, still with a 10-second period, 527 energy. The wind swings to a W cross-off, keeping it clean. Another solid session.
Saturday the 11th is a different flavor. Swell drops to 3ft from the ESE, but the period lengthens to 12 seconds. That’s a long-period groundswell, which will give it some real shape and push, especially on a reef. The wind is NW offshore, and it’s light. Expect clean, glassy conditions. The energy is moderate at 419. This is a great option for a clean, fun day. The wave comment says for experienced surfers, but with the size down, it’s more manageable.
Now, we hit a proper dry spell. From Sunday the 12th right through to the end of the week, it’s mostly small or messy. Swell drops below 3ft, the energy tanks, and the wind is strong or onshore. There’s a big storm brewing around the 16th and 17th, with 16ft+ swell and howling SE onshore winds – that’s a big, ugly, blown-out mess. For a reef, that’s just a washing machine. Stick to the beach that day, and even then, it’s likely a kite-surfing day.
The magic returns on Monday the 20th of July. That’s a week and a half away, so keep an eye on the charts, but it looks promising. A 5ft SE swell with a 10-second period, 694 energy, and a light WNW offshore wind. The wave comment says expect very good conditions. This is the next standout.
The tail end of the period, the 24th of July, is a serious one. A 7ft ESE swell, 10-second period, and 1088 energy – strong wave energy. The wind is a clean NW offshore. The comment says it’s excellent for experienced surfers. That’s a big, clean swell right on the optimum direction. If you’re an advanced surfer, this is the one to circle. Crowds are possible, so get there early.
So, to sum it up: the best bets are Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th for the first big clean pulse, then Saturday the 11th for the clean, long-period groundswell. The long-range standouts are Monday the 20th and Friday the 24th of July – those look like crackers, but they’re a way off, so don’t bet the farm on them yet.
Rusty.
