The Lowdown
Alright, this is a bit of a tough stretch for Nobbys Reef. We've got a long wait for anything decent, so don't get your hopes up for the first week. The setup is a shallow, exposed reef that demands a clean swell, and for most of the next 16 days, the wind is just not playing ball.
We're looking at a whole lot of nothing for the first week. Thursday the 16th kicks off with some chest-high at 7ft from the S, but the wind is a messy cross-onshore and the combined energy is moderate (494). It's a chop fest. The whole first week is plagued by onshore or cross-onshore winds and poor quality. The water temp is sitting at 65°, pretty much average for the time of year, so that's not a factor.
We get a glimmer of hope on Tuesday the 21st. The morning is looking clean with a light offshore from the NNW. The swell is pretty small, only about 4ft, but it's a nice 10-second period from the E. The energy is moderate (295). It's not a standout, but it's the first clean window we've had. The wave quality is still only marginal though, so don't expect barrels.
The real standout, the one that's worth waiting for, is the 29th of July. Wednesday morning sees a jump in size with 7ft from the S. The wind is a gentle offshore from the NW, and the energy is getting strong (897). The forecast says "expect very good surf conditions". By Wednesday afternoon, it's going to be pumping. The swell hits 8ft from the S, still with a clean offshore from the NW, and the energy jumps to a very strong 1096. This is for experienced surfers only—it's a powerful wave. The period is 9 seconds, so it's a wind swell, a little shorter, but with that offshore wind it'll be groomed to perfection. The crowds might be a problem here, as it is a spot that can get busy. That afternoon session on the 29th is the one to circle on the calendar. The days before that, like the 25th and 26th, have some long-period groundswell from the SSE, but it's tiny—2ft to 3ft—and the long period (19 seconds) at that size will just be a slow, straight wall at a beach break. It's not worth it.
After that Wednesday, the wind turns messy again on the 30th and 31st, so the window is really just that one day. It's a long wait, but when it comes, it'll be worth it.
Rusty.
