The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer.
The first few days are a write-off, with a poor onshore breeze and ugly conditions. The real action kicks off on Monday the 20th with a nice little window. That’s the standout for the first week, and then we’ve got another promising pulse lining up for the following Sunday the 26th. There’s a bit of a dry spell in the middle, but it looks like things will pick up again.
Nobbys Reef is the only break in the game here. It’s a reef setup, so it handles a good swell, but it’s exposed to the SE and it’s inconsistent – it doesn’t fire all the time, so when it does, it’s special.
Monday morning the 20th is the pick of the early days. The sky is clear, wind is glassy from the ENE at 3 mph, creating absolute perfection on the surface. Swell is a solid 5 ft out of the East with an 11-second period, working up moderate energy (699). The water is sitting at 66°, about normal for the time of year. This is clean, quality surf for an advanced crew. Keep in mind it can get crowded here sometimes.
Tuesday morning the 21st is still decent with a 4 ft East swell and a light offshore, but it’s not as punchy. By Wednesday the 22nd, the swell drops to under 3 ft, so it’s only really for the small-wave gear.
Then we hit a flat spell. Thursday and Friday are tiny, but Friday the 24th afternoon shows a glimmer: a clean 5 ft S swell with glassy conditions. That’s a good one.
Now, the real standout of the whole outlook is Sunday the 26th morning. The swell jumps to 6 ft from the South, with a long 12-second period, giving it some proper grunt (847 combined energy). The wind is light and cross-offshore from the SW, keeping it clean. The water temp is still about average. This is the session to circle on the calendar. The afternoon gets a bit bigger at 7 ft but the wind turns onshore and chops it up, so get out early.
The following week has some smaller, cleaner mornings. Monday the 27th is okay, Tuesday the 28th has a 3 ft S swell with offshore wind, but it’s not a standout. By the end of the month into early August, the swell picks up again, but the wind is messy. Saturday the 1st of August has a 6 ft S swell, but the cross-onshore wind will make it lumpy. Sunday the 2nd is better with a 5 ft S swell and offshore wind, a solid clean option.
Overall, Monday morning the 20th and Sunday morning the 26th are your two best bets. The 26th has the bigger, longer-period swell, so it’ll have more push and shape, but it’s a reef, so it should handle it well. Just watch for the crowds.
Rusty.
