Alright, this is Rusty. Let's have a look at what's coming our way for the next couple of weeks.
First up, it's a slow start. There's really nothing worth getting wet for on Tuesday the 7th or Wednesday the 8th. The swell is just too big and messy, with a solid 12 ft cross-onshore wind messing it up. The swell energy is strong (4639), but the conditions are just plain ugly. Don't bother.
The first real glimmer of hope hits on Thursday the 9th of July. The morning is still a bit average, but check out Thursday afternoon. The wind swings to a glassy WSW at 3 mph, and we get a clean 6 ft swell rolling in from the SE with a period of 9 seconds. The wave energy is moderate (620), but with the glassy surface, it's going to be clean and fun. This is your first real chance, but it's not the standout.
Friday the 10th keeps that clean vibe going. The morning has a light offshore wind from the W, with a clean 5 ft SE swell. The afternoon stays glassy, with another 5 ft swell. These are good, clean, fun waves, but the size is modest.
Now, for the main event. This is where it gets interesting. Saturday the 12th of July and Sunday the 13th are looking like the pick of the near-term. We get a solid offshore wind from the NW, hitting 12 mph on Saturday morning. The swell drops a bit to 4 ft on Saturday and 3 ft on Sunday, but it's from the SE, which is the optimum direction for Nobbys Reef. The wave energy is low (280 and 182), but with clean, offshore conditions, this reef will be offering up some nice, lined-up waves. This is your best bet for a proper session for the intermediate to advanced crew.
After that, it goes quiet again for the middle of the week. Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th are small, with only 1.0 ft to 3 ft on offer. Wednesday the 15th has a bit more size (4 ft) but the wind goes cross-onshore in the afternoon, ruining it. It's not worth the paddle out.
Here's the long-range promise. Looking way out to Monday the 20th of July, we start seeing a new pulse. The morning has a solid 7 ft S swell with a clean cross-offshore wind, but it's pushing into the expert zone. Then, the real bomb hits on Tuesday the 21st of July. The swell jumps to an insane 15 ft to 16 ft from the S, with a long period of 12 seconds. The wave energy is extreme (11419). But here's the thing – the forecast notes the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. The wind is gentle, so the conditions will be clean, but for anyone but the absolute best, this is a paddling death wish. This is a proper, "go watch, don't paddle" kind of day.
So, to wrap it up for the near-term: the standout is Saturday the 12th and Sunday the 13th of July. Clean offshore wind, decent direction, and just the right size for a quality reef wave. The long-range looks absolutely massive but dangerous around the 21st and 22nd. Keep an eye on that one.
Rusty.
