The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break it down.
First up, it’s a quiet start. The first few days are a total loss for any decent surf. Friday the 17th through Sunday the 19th are all no-good – onshore winds and poor conditions. The water temp is sitting around 65°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
We finally get a little window of hope on Monday the 20th morning. It’s small, but the easterly swell is pushing around 5ft with a 10-second period. The wind is light and cross-onshore, so it’s not glassy, but it’s rideable. The combined energy is moderate (524). Not a standout, but a step in the right direction.
The real highlight comes much later, on Wednesday the 29th of July. That morning, the south swell is pumping in at 10ft with a 10-second period. That’s a lot of juice – the combined energy is a massive 2706. The wind is offshore from the northwest, so it’ll be clean. But listen, that’s too big for this reef break. It’s an advanced spot anyway, and at that size, only the most experienced crew should even think about it. The afternoon settles down to a still-chunky 6ft with the same clean offshore wind, and that’s where the quality is for the experts. The combined energy is still strong (1002). This is the best on offer in the whole outlook, but you gotta be on your game.
A few other days worth a mention: Tuesday the 21st morning has a clean 4ft easterly swell with a light offshore northwesterly, but the energy is low (303). Saturday the 25th morning has a clean 3ft south swell with a light offshore – clean but small. And the very end of the outlook, Saturday the 1st of August, has a moderate offshore wind with 4ft swell from the SE – clean and surfable, but nothing to write home about.
Overall, it’s a slow start, a big, dangerous pulse on the 29th, and then a few small, clean mornings to finish. Don’t get your hopes up for the first week.
Rusty.
