The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk about Nobbys Reef. Looking at the next couple of weeks, it’s a bit of a mixed bag—we’ve got some clean windows but plenty of ordinary days to wade through too.
The water’s sitting at 64°F, which is about average for this time of year, nothing wild.
First up, Monday the 24th of August morning is looking like our first real chance. The swell is a small 3ft from the S with a 10-second period, and the wind is a light northerly, making it cross-offshore and clean. That’s half-decent for a Monday session, but it’s not big—friendly for most skill levels. The combined swell energy is moderate at 220.
Thursday the 27th of August morning sees a bump in size to 5ft from the S, but the wind is cross-onshore from the SSE, so it’s lumpy with only marginal conditions. The energy is moderate at 316, but it’s not the cleanest.
Friday the 28th of August morning is a standout. Glassy conditions with a light offshore from the NW, swell at 3ft from the S, 9-second period—clean and tidy. Combined energy is moderate at 223. This is a nice one for a relaxed paddle.
Now, look ahead to Monday the 31st of August morning. We’ve got a very long-period groundswell coming in—19 seconds from the SSE—with a small 2ft wave height. That long period means really clean lines, but it might break a bit straight at a reef like this. Wind is cross-offshore from the NNW, and it’s clean. The energy is strong at 401. For a reef break, that long-period energy could line up beautifully if you know the take-off spots. Crowds are possible here, so keep that in mind.
Tuesday the 1st of September morning offers another clean one: offshore WNW wind, 2ft from the S with a 15-second period. Moderate energy at 283, clean conditions.
Wednesday the 2nd of September morning is also solid—light offshore NW wind at 12 mph, 2ft from the S, 14-second period. Clean and moderate offshore wind, combined energy at 232.
Then we get a gap of a few days with smaller, weaker surf and less inspiring conditions until Sunday the 6th of September. That morning sees a clean NW offshore breeze, 2ft from the S with a 14-second period, and moderate energy at 257.
For the best of the bunch, I’m calling Friday the 28th of August morning—those glassy conditions and a clean S swell make for a lovely session. The second standout is Monday the 31st of August morning: that long-period, high-energy groundswell is rare and could be a treat if you’re comfortable on a reef. It’s a few weeks away, so keep an eye on it.
Stay keen.
