The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Moolack is cooking up for us over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty flat and fiddly run ahead. The water is sitting at 52°, which is a whopping 7° colder than usual for this time of year – that’s way off the mark, so you’ll be wanting a thick wetsuit and maybe some booties if you’re brave enough to paddle out. The first few days kick off with some size, but the quality is just not there.
The early part of the period, starting Saturday the 18th, has a 5ft swell from the NW with a period of 10 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate (854). But the wind is a cross-shore NNW breeze at 16 mph, putting a nasty chop on the water. The waves are messy, and it’s a real struggle. Things don’t improve much for Sunday the 19th or Monday the 20th. The swell sticks around 5ft to 6ft on Sunday, with a short period of 7 seconds and a cross-shore wind, so it’s just a bumpy, weak mess. By Monday morning, we get a light breeze, but the swell is still cross-shore and the conditions are only marginal.
If there’s a small window to keep an eye on, it’s Wednesday the 22nd morning. The wind finally swings onshore from the W at just 6 mph, and we’ve got a 4ft NW swell at 9 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (442). With that light wind, it might clean up a bit, but the scores are still low – it’s just a gamble on a tide that might work. Nothing to get excited about, but it’s the best of a bad bunch early on.
After that, the swell drops right off. From the 21st onwards, we see a lot of 2ft to 3ft SW groundswells with long periods (16 to 22 seconds). That long period means the waves will have some shape but will be very inconsistent and likely close out on the beach break. The winds are mostly cross or cross-on, so it’s not going to be clean. The energy is moderate (between 438 and 828), but the size is just too small to do much with.
The second week is a real snoozer. From the 25th of July right through to the end of the month, the swell stays tiny – 2ft to 3ft – and the wind is a constant cross or cross-on breeze. It’s a long stretch of poor surf conditions. The 26th (Sunday) morning has a tiny 3ft SW swell and a light onshore W wind at 6 mph, but it’s barely a ripple. The best you can say is it’s not a washing machine. The 1st of August brings a jump to 5ft, but it’s a short-period NNW windswell (6 seconds) with a 16 mph cross-on wind – that’s just a choppy, blown-out mess for the experts only, and even then, it’s not worth it.
Overall, there’s no standout session here. The conditions are just too messy or the swell is too small. For a spot that’s fairly consistent, this is a disappointing run. It’s the kind of period where you’d be better off checking the forecasts for a change, because it hasn’t got a lot to offer right now.
That’s the long and short of it. Keep your hopes up, the forecasts can change.
Rusty.
