Misty Cliffs Surf Forecast and Surf Report

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Misty Cliffs over the next couple of weeks.

First up, the water is sitting at 58°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year. The opening days are a slow burn, but once we get into the middle of the first week, things start to get interesting.

Monday the 3rd is where it’s at. A clean 4ft WSW swell rolls in with a solid 14-second period – that’s proper groundswell energy. The wind is light and offshore from the east, so expect glassy conditions. The combined energy is moderate (986), and it’s going to be a sweet morning session. This is the standout of the first week. Come Monday afternoon, the wind swings to a cross-offshore from the southeast, still clean enough for a good session.

Tuesday the 4th is a write-off with a cross-onshore wind and a weaker 4ft SW swell. The combined energy drops to 463, and the quality is poor. The same goes for the rest of the week – Wednesday the 5th and Thursday the 6th see a big jump in swell size, hitting 8ft to 10ft, but the wind is messy with cross-shore and fresh breezes. The energy is strong (2550 to 3781), but the conditions are lumpy and too big for most. This is expert territory. Friday the 7th morning has offshore wind and a 10ft SW swell, but again, it’s a big swell – only for the experienced.

Saturday the 8th is a dud with strong winds and a 8ft to 12ft lumpy swell. Sunday the 9th is a complete write-off with near-gale winds and rain. The break is a beach-and-reef setup, but with these conditions, it’s looking more interesting for kite surfing than paddling.

Monday the 10th starts with a small 4ft SSW swell and cross-off wind, but it’s marginal. The afternoon brings a massive 15ft SW swell with strong energy (4664) – that’s a beast for experts only. Tuesday the 11th is the real standout of the second week. A 15ft SSW swell with a 14-second period and offshore wind from the northeast. The combined energy is massive (12595). The water is glassy in the morning. This is a serious, heavy groundswell, and it’s going to be a day for the big-wave crew. Misty Cliffs is an exposed sandbar, so with this long period, expect it to stand up well.

Wednesday the 12th and Thursday the 13th see the swell drop back to 13ft to 7ft, but the wind is cross or cross-on, making it lumpy. The energy is still very strong (5486 down to 1891), but it’s not clean. Friday the 14th afternoon has a 10ft SW swell with a 16-second period and cross-off wind, but the energy is at 4404 – the conditions are fresh, and it’s borderline for most.

The final weekend, Saturday the 15th and Sunday the 16th, sees the swell mellow out to 5ft to 8ft with cross-off wind, but the combined energy drops to 2062 and 973. It’s marginal, but better than the junk before. The 16-day window ends with a Monday the 17th that has a 5ft SW swell with a 16-second period and cross-off wind, but the square energy is moderate (2332) and the wind is fresh.

Best on offer: Monday morning the 3rd for the clean, offshore conditions and the 4ft WSW groundswell. And Tuesday morning the 11th for the massive, powerful swell with glassy offshore wind – but that’s one for the experts.
