The Lowdown

Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Mablethorpe over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you, it’s a pretty quiet stretch. The forecast shows a lot of small, weak swell and a lot of onshore or cross-shore wind messing things up. The first real window of anything surfable doesn’t kick in until Saturday morning, the 22nd of August. For a few days before that, we’re looking at tiny waves, sometimes with a clean-ish offshore wind, but the energy is just too low to get excited about, with the combined swell energy barely reaching 11 (that’s weak).

The water temp is sitting at 69°, which is a massive 8° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual, so you’ll be in for a warm one if you get in.

Saturday morning, the 22nd, is the first time we see something that’s surfable, but it’s still very ordinary. Swell is 3ft from the north, with a short period of 8 seconds, coming in with a combined energy of 134 (moderate). The wind is light and offshore from the NNW, which will keep it clean. The break is Mablethorpe, and it’s a beginner spot that’s inconsistent, so don’t expect a machine. It’s fairly exposed to the north, which is fine for this small northerly pulse. Crowds are sometimes a thing here, so you might have some company.

The next morning, Sunday the 23rd, is a similar story – 3ft from the NNE, period 9 seconds, energy at 101 (moderate), and a light offshore from the SW keeping it clean. Again, it’s just ordinary, surfable but nothing to write home about.

After that, we hit a long, grim gap. From Sunday afternoon onwards, the wind swings onshore for days, and the swell drops right off. Monday the 24th through to the end of the month is mostly poor, with onshore winds and tiny, weak waves. The combined energy values are low, often in the teens or single digits. There’s a bit of a spike on the 25th of August with a 4ft east swell, but it’s got a 25 mph onshore wind making it total junk, better suited for kite surfing than a paddle session.

We finally get a flicker of hope on the 30th of August, Sunday afternoon, with a 4ft swell from the ESE, period 6 seconds, energy of 118 (moderate), and a clean cross-off wind. It’s still surfable but very ordinary. Then again, on the 2nd of September, Wednesday afternoon, we get a 4ft swell from the NNW with a moderate offshore wind, and the following morning, the 3rd of September, a 4ft north swell with a bit more energy at 141 (moderate) and a clean offshore wind. These are the best of the bunch, but the period is short (6 seconds), so the waves will be a bit crumbly and weak.

If I had to pick a standout, it’s a toss-up between the morning of the 22nd of August and the morning of the 3rd of September. The 3rd of September has a bit more energy (141) and a clean offshore wind, but it’s a long way out, so take that with a grain of salt. The 22nd is closer and more reliable, but still just a small, ordinary wave. For a beginner spot that’s inconsistent, this is a pretty normal run of quiet conditions. It tends not to stay flat forever, but this window is a lean one.
