The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s goin’ on at Mablethorpe over the next couple weeks. Gotta be straight with you—this is a brutal stretch. We’re talkin’ a long stretch of nearly flat, messy surf with barely a glimmer of hope until early August.
Sunday the 19th: cloudy with a northerly wind at 19 mph, cross-off, making a mess of the 5ft NNE swell. Combined energy is moderate (318), but the wind kills it. Poor surf. Monday the 20th drops to 3ft and weaker, with onshore wind. Tuesday the 21st is even smaller—2ft and junk. Wednesday the 22nd through Thursday the 23rd are flat and choppy. From Friday the 24th through Sunday the 27th, the wind turns offshore but the swell is tiny—0.6ft to 2ft, with almost no energy. That’s barely a ripple.
Monday the 27th morning is the first time we get something clean-ish: 2ft from the north, 7-second period, light offshore breeze, but still weak energy (32). Tuesday the 28th morning is glassy with easterly wind at just 3 mph and a tiny 1ft north swell—looks nice but unrideable. Then we get a few days of clean offshore conditions from the 29th through the 31st, but the swell is still only 1ft to 2ft, period never above 8 seconds. Not enough.
Saturday the 1st of August and Sunday the 2nd show a bit more life: a 2ft NNE swell on Sunday afternoon with a 9-second period, combined energy up to 58, clean offshore wind. It’s still small, but at least it’s clean. Monday the 3rd fades again with onshore winds.
Bottom line: Mablethorpe is an inconsistent beginner spot, and this stretch is a long, flat run. The best chance you’ve got is Sunday the 2nd of August—small and clean, with that NNE swell at 2ft and 9 seconds. Crowds can show up sometimes, but with this lack of surf, you’ll likely have the place to yourself. This is pretty normal for the area when the swell shuts off. It won’t last forever, but for now, stay dry.
Rusty.
