The Lowdown
Mate, I’ll be straight with you – the next 16 days at Mablethorpe are a tough watch. The forecast is mostly a flat, blown-out mess, and there’s nothing here that’s gonna get the heart rate up. This is a spot that’s “inconsistent” at the best of times, and right now it’s looking like a long, blank run. The first real sign of life doesn’t show up until the very end of the month, and even then it’s pretty ordinary.
So, let’s break it down. We’ve got a solid week of nothing from Sunday the 23rd right through to Saturday the 29th. The swell is tiny, under 3ft, and the wind is mostly onshore, side-onshore, or just too strong. Sunday morning the 23rd has a glassy 3ft from the NNE, but the water is a very unusual 67° – that’s 7° warmer than normal for this time of year, which is a real head-scratcher. The combined energy is a weak 87, so it’s barely a ripple. By the afternoon, it’s gone. Monday through Saturday are all zeros – poor surf conditions, poor surf conditions… you get the picture.
The first hint of a pulse arrives on Monday the 31st of August. The morning brings a 4ft NNE swell with a short 5-second period and a clean cross-offshore wind. The combined energy is a weak 77. It’s “surfable but very ordinary.” The afternoon gets glassy with a 3ft NNE swell, energy climbs to 109 (moderate), but it’s still small and short-period. This is the best of a bad bunch. Tuesday the 1st of September is similar: 3ft from the NNE, 9-second period, clean offshore wind from the West, and moderate energy at 137. Not a stand-out, but the cleanest and most consistent the window gets.
After that, the quality drops off again. Wednesday the 2nd goes cross-offshore with a fresh breeze, and the swell stays small. Thursday the 3rd has a clean offshore 2ft NNE swell, but it’s just not enough. The last week is a mix of strong offshore winds that make it hard to paddle into, or choppy cross-onshore junk. The final days from the 5th to the 7th of September are tiny, weak, and ugly.
Look, if you’re desperate, the Monday 31st morning and Tuesday 1st September sessions are the only ones worth a look. The wind is clean, the water is warm, but it’s a beginner’s wave at best. For anyone else, it’s a skip. The setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer on most of these days. I’d wait for a different forecast.
