The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you about what’s cookin’ at Mablethorpe. We’ve got a long, 16-day window from now, but honestly, it’s a bit of a flat spell with a few flickers of hope later on. The first week or so is mostly a bust, so don’t get your hopes up early.
The pattern is pretty grim to start. We’re looking at a solid stretch from Sunday the 19th through to about Friday the 24th of July where the conditions are just poor. The swell is tiny, the wind is messy, and it’s just not worth paddling out. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
For the first few days, the swell barely scrapes 3 ft, with a short, weak period around 6-9 seconds, and the combined energy is weak, mostly in the double digits (like 318, 270, 122). The wind is cross or cross-on, creating lumpy, choppy surf. It’s just not happening.
From Sunday the 20th through to Thursday the 23rd, the swell drops even further, under 3 ft and mostly under 2 ft, with periods of 6-7 seconds. The energy is pathetic, like 31, 37, 55. The wind is still cross or cross-on, and the surf is described as "poor." It’s a real struggle.
There’s a bit of a tease on Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th of July. The winds swing offshore from the WNW, which is a good sign, but the swell is tiny – 2 ft and 1.0 ft with a 6-7 second period. The energy is nearly nothing (28, 18, 8). It’s clean, glassy even, but it’s barely a ripple. You’d need a longboard and a lot of patience.
Then we hit a real dead zone from Sunday the 26th to Monday the 27th, with virtually no swell at all. There’s a brief pulse on Tuesday the 28th of July. The swell picks up to 4-4 ft from the north, but with a short, weak period of 5 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (57, 68). The wind is offshore or cross-off, so it’s clean. The surf is described as "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." It’s the best of the bunch, but it’s not going to get your heart racing.
Wednesday the 29th of July is another small window. Swell is 3 ft from the north, period 7 seconds, with moderate energy (106) and offshore wind. Again, it’s surfable, but ordinary.
After that, it’s back to tiny, weak surf for the rest of the window into the first week of August. The wind stays mostly offshore or cross-off, but the swell is tiny, 0.7 ft to 2 ft, with no energy.
So, the standout, if you can call it that, is the Tuesday the 28th of July and Wednesday the 29th of July mornings. At Mablethorpe, you’ll see a 3 ft to 4 ft north swell, which is clean with offshore wind. But the short period means it’s not going to be holding much shape. It’s a *maybe* for a beginner, but it’s not big enough to be a problem. The crowd factor is "sometimes," so you might have company, but it won’t be a zoo.
The rest of the period is a big gap. There’s a gap of about 10 days with no real recommendations. It’s a classic summer flat spell. Don’t force it. The conditions are better for kite surfing than paddle surfing on the beach breaks here when the wind is strong.
Later on, the offshore winds and a small pulse on the 28th and 29th are the only whispers of hope, but it’s a long way out and a bit uncertain. Keep an eye on the charts, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
