The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a grim outlook for the Mablethorpe region over the next 16 days. If you’re looking for a reason to wax up, you’re going to be waiting a long time. There are no good surf options on the cards in this entire window. The forecast is a flat, choppy, and generally unfriendly stretch for a paddle surfer.
The first few days are a write-off. Wednesday the 15th through to Sunday the 19th of July offer nothing but tiny, weak swell and poor wind. The combined wave energy is pathetic, barely registering in the double digits, and it’s mostly short-period windswell from the NNE. The wind is either cross or cross-on, making a mess of the water. The water temperature is a bizarre 68° with an anomaly of 10°, which is far warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s cold comfort when there’s no surf.
We do have a tiny window of hope on Monday the 20th of July. The morning sees a little lift with a clean, cross-off wind from the NW and the lightest breeze of the period. The swell is still only 3ft from the NNE with an 8-second period, but the combined energy creeps up to a moderate level. The wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” That’s the best you’re going to get, and it’s not saying much. The afternoon goes straight back to being rubbish.
After that, from Tuesday the 21st of July right through to the end of the month, it’s a long, bleak run. The swell drops back to knee-high or less, the wind is a constant problem, and the combined energy sinks back to weak levels (down to nothing by the 29th). There’s a consistent blank run of well over a week with absolutely no recommendations. For Mablethorpe, a flat, quiet spell like this is more normal for the area. It’s not a place that fires often, and when it doesn’t, it really doesn’t.
Honestly, your best bet is to leave the board in the car and look at something else. This setup is more interesting for a kite surfer wanting to get dragged around in the wind than for anyone trying to paddle into a wave. Keep an eye on the charts, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
