The Lowdown
Alright folks, let’s talk about the next couple of weeks around Mablethorpe. I’m Rusty, and I’ve been staring at this stretch of coast for a while now. Gotta be straight with you – it’s a long, dry spell coming up. For the next two weeks, this place is flat as a pancake. No surf worth paddling for. The water temp’s sitting at 20° right now, which is a whopping 5° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s freakishly warm, so if you’re just swimming, it’s lovely, but for surf? Nada.
Then, after a solid two‑week gap, we finally get a little pulse on Saturday, 1 August. The first decent look is Saturday morning – a small 4 ft swell from the east, with a short period of just 6 seconds. That’s a weak, short‑period windswell, so the waves will be small and a bit crumbly, not much push. But the wind is light offshore from the west at 9 mph, so the surface will be clean and glassy. Combined energy is moderate at 121, so there’s enough to get a few rides if you’re a beginner or just want to bob around. The afternoon gets a fresh offshore breeze at 22 mph – that’s a bit too strong for clean surfing, even though it’s offshore, so it’ll be bumpy.
Mablethorpe is a beginner‑friendly spot, but it’s inconsistent and only breaks sometimes. The swell direction is from the east, but the optimum is north, so it’s not hitting the sandbars right. Expect it to be a bit messy, but with that offshore wind, it’ll be the best we’ve seen in ages. Crowds are possible – it’s “sometimes” busy, and with nothing else around, a few locals might pop out. Overall, it’s a very marginal day, but if you’re desperate for a paddle, Saturday morning is your only window. After that, the forecast looks bleak again. Hang tight, or find a kite – the setup on that day might actually be more fun for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, with that fresh offshore wind and small swell.
Rusty.
