The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee. Rusty here.
Let’s be straight with you – the next 16 days at Mablethorpe are looking like a write-off for any kind of decent surf. We’ve got a long, dry spell ahead with nothing really worth paddling out for. The first week is a total bust, and the second week doesn’t offer much of a silver lining either.
We kick off on Friday the 17th of July with tiny, weak windswell. The swell is a pathetic 1 feet to 2 feet from the north-northeast, with a short, choppy period of 4 seconds. The wind is cross-shore and moderate, making for a real mess. It’s a no-go.
This pattern pretty much holds through the rest of the week. We see a slight bump on Sunday the 19th, with the swell pushing up to 5 feet from the north-northeast, and the period stretching to 9 seconds. There’s some power there. But the problem is a fresh, 19 mph cross-shore wind that chops it all up. The surf quality is still rated as poor. It’s the kind of day where you’d be better off looking at the water from the car park.
After that, it drops back down to small, weak waves for the rest of the week, all under the same story: poor conditions, cross-shore winds, and messy surf. The wind does finally swing offshore on Friday the 24th of July, but by then the swell is down to 2 feet at best. It’s clean, but it’s just too small to do anything with.
The second week starts on Sunday the 26th of July with a tiny, 3-foot north-northeast swell. The wind is a light cross-offshore, and the conditions are actually clean. The notes say "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," which is about as positive as it gets for this whole forecast. It’s not a total washout, but it’s not a day to get excited about either.
The rest of the second week fades away into even smaller surf, with more onshore winds and glassy conditions on the 31st of July that are too small to ride. The whole run ends with a flat day on the 1st of August.
So, to sum it up: there’s nothing worth highlighting here. The best day is probably the 26th of July, but even that’s a stretch. The surf is either too small, too windy, or both. If you’re desperate for a paddle, you might find a knee-high wave on the 26th, but don’t expect much. For the rest of us, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
