The Lowdown
Alright crew, Rusty here. Let’s not sugarcoat it – this 16-day stretch for Los Lobos is a total bummer. The first real wave we see is barely a ripple, and it doesn’t get any better.
We kick off from Friday the 24th of July with a nasty, persistent cross-onshore wind from the NNE, blowing 19 to 22 mph, just ruining the surface. The swell is a messy, short-period wind swell, running 2 ft to 5 ft, only 8 seconds, coming from the wrong direction. The wave energy is weak to moderate – think 160 to 339 (moderate) – but with that wind, it’s all chop. Water temp is about average for the season, nothing special.
We get a little break on the 1st of August. Saturday morning the wind drops to a light cross-shore, with a tiny 3 ft swell from the NE, period 7 seconds. Energy is moderate (140). Still poor, but by Saturday afternoon, we get clean cross-offshore wind from the ENE at 9 mph. The swell stays 3 ft, NE, period 8 seconds, energy up a bit (189). It’s surfable but very ordinary. That’s the best we’ve got.
Then Sunday the 2nd of August teases us with a quick spike of 5 ft NE swell, but it’s hammered by a strong onshore wind from the NW at 9 mph. Energy is moderate (425), but quality is zero. After that, the second week is a ghost town. From Monday the 3rd to Saturday the 8th of August, it’s tiny, onshore slop – 1 ft to 1 ft waves, periods all over the place, and energy barely reaching 70 (weak). Wind is onshore or cross-on, and it’s just not happening.
The only real standout, if you can call it that, is the afternoon of Saturday the 1st of August. At Los Lobos (reef and point), a NW swell is the ideal direction here, but we’re stuck with a NE swell. Still, the clean conditions from the cross-offshore wind make it the most surfable moment of the whole outlook. The swell is a tiny 3 ft, but it’s clean. This spot is an expert break, and crowds are often, so expect some company for those tiny, clean lines. For a reef and point, this is a drought.
Honestly, for the rest of the 16 days, that steady cross-on wind is a kite surfer’s dream, but for a paddler? Forget it. The long-range forecasts for the second week are so weak they’re not worth a mention. It’s a quiet one, folks.
Rusty.
