The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. Gotta be straight with you—this is a tough stretch for Les Roquilles. The whole 16-day window is a write-off for any decent surf. I’m not seeing a single standout session, not one that’s worth paddling out for.
We start off Wednesday, July 15th, with tiny, weak swell. The morning has a bit of knee-high, 1ft, from the SSE, but the wind is off from the NNE, keeping it clean. That’s the only small mercy. The water is a balmy 76°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – feels like a bath. That afternoon, the wind switches to a cross-on from the SSE at 12 mph, turning it into a choppy mess. Wave energy is pitiful, barely registering.
Thursday the 16th offers a glassy morning, with the wind going dead calm from the WSW, but the swell has dropped even more, to 1ft from the SSW. It’s clean, but there’s barely a ripple. That afternoon, it’s back to the cross-on chop again.
From Friday the 17th all the way through to Thursday the 24th, it’s virtually flat. Days of nothing. The swell almost disappears, with the combined energy dropping to 0 or just a whisper. You’ll get some glassy mornings and clean offshore winds here and there, but there’s no wave to ride. This is a real blank run.
Then, on Saturday, July 25th, we finally see a pulse of energy. The morning brings a 5ft swell from the WNW, with a short, weak period of 5 seconds. The combined energy climbs to 105, which is moderate, but don’t get excited. The wind is offshore from the NE at 9 mph, so the surface is clean. However, the waves themselves are described as “surfable but very ordinary conditions.” It’s a weak, short-period windswell, not a proper groundswell. The afternoon falls apart as the wind cranks up to 16 mph from the ESE, making it choppy and cross-shore.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums. Sunday the 26th to Wednesday the 30th of July is all tiny, weak, and mostly onshore junk. The biggest morning on the 30th is a weak 1ft from the S with a period of 4 seconds, and the wind is just a light cross-shore.
Honestly, for Les Roquilles, a run like this is more normal than not. It’s an inconsistent beginner spot, and it’s often crowded when it does break. But it’s not breaking now. If you’re desperate, the only window that even looks like a wave is the morning of July 25th, but it’s a poor, short-period slop that’s only for the most optimistic. The setup might be more interesting for the kite surfers on that Saturday afternoon, with the cross-shore wind and some bump.
Keep an eye on the forecasts, because it tends not to stay this poor forever, but for now, leave the board at home.
