The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I gotta be straight with you—looking at the next 16 days, it’s a tough stretch for waves around here. There’s a real dry spell coming up, and I mean a long one.
The first bit of hope we might see doesn’t come until the 25th of July, and even then it’s barely a ripple. The water temperature right now is absolutely scorching, sitting at 80°, which is a whopping 9° warmer than average for this time of year—that’s a seriously weird anomaly.
We’re looking at a gap of about a week starting now with nothing worth paddling out for. The only spot we’ve got to talk about is Les Roquilles. It’s an inconsistent beginner break that’s fairly exposed, and it gets crowded often. The swell direction it loves is SSE.
Right through the 24th, it’s flat. You’ll get some clean days with a light offshore breeze, but there’s just no swell. It’s a frustrating wait.
On the 25th of July, a tiny pulse shows up. Saturday morning, we’re looking at a 0.7 ft swell from the SSW with a period of 4 seconds—that’s a short period windswell, not much energy behind it. The combined energy is a weak 1. Wind is a light cross-off from the north, so it’s clean. Saturday afternoon kicks up a little: 2 ft from the west, period 3 seconds, but the wind is a moderate cross-shore from the WNW, making it choppy. Not great.
The 26th of July is the only day that looks slightly interesting, but it’s not for everyone. Sunday morning, a bigger pulse arrives: 6 ft swell from the WNW, period 5 seconds, with a combined energy of 155 (moderate energy). The problem is the wind—a fresh 30 km/h from the WNW blowing straight cross-shore. That’s going to create a lumpy, messy cross-chop. For a beach setup, this is more of a kite-surfing kind of day than a clean paddle-surfing session. It’s only for experts if they’re desperate, and honestly, the quality is poor.
After that, it drops right back down. The 27th of July has a 2 ft swell from the WNW, period 4 seconds, with a light cross-shore wind. It’s clean, but tiny. From the 28th onwards, we’re back to flat or near-flat conditions with a few clean offshore mornings, but no swell to speak of. The 31st of July has a 2 ft swell from the SSE with a 7-second period, and a gentle offshore from the NE on the morning, so it’s clean, but the energy is a weak 36. It’s barely a wave.
The 1st of August and the 2nd of August are the same story—tiny, weak swells. On the 2nd, a 1.0 ft from the SSW with a 4-second period, clean wind from the NW, but it’s just not enough.
So, the standout here? Honestly, there isn’t a real standout. The best you’ll get is the morning of the 26th of July, but the wind absolutely ruins it. If you’ve got a kite, that’s your window. For a paddle surfer, it’s a long blank stretch. The only saving grace is that the area often sees these slow periods, and forecasts can change, so don’t lose all hope.
Rusty.
