Alright, let’s get into it. Gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper surf. We’ve got a long stretch of flatness and weak, sloppy little waves that just aren’t worth paddling out for.
Right now, and for the next several days, it’s a desert. We’re looking at barely a ripple at Les Roquilles – teeny tiny 0.7 ft to 1 ft swells with periods of only 4 to 5 seconds. That’s no energy behind ’em. The combined swell energy is basically a whisper, with values like 2 or 3 early on (weak energy). The water temp is sitting at 75°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year – a big anomaly of 6°, so you’re getting a summer bath, but without the waves to enjoy it.
We’ve got a few mornings with glassy conditions or light offshore winds from the north, which would normally be a dream, but there’s just nothing to ride. Thursday the 9th morning has a tiny 1 ft swell from the SSW, glassy with a 5-second period, and a combined energy of 8 (weak). Still poor surf conditions. Friday the 10th morning is flat again with a 1 ft swell. Same story.
Honestly, the whole first week is a write-off. We’re looking at a gap of no real surf until we get to late in the second week.
Things finally start to stir around Saturday the 18th, but even then, it’s a mess. Saturday afternoon sees a 3 ft swell from the west and a 4-second period, but with a strong 25 mph cross-shore wind. Combined energy gets up to 27 (weak energy), but it’s going to be a choppy, lumpy mess – more of a kite-surfing kind of day than paddle-surfing.
The best of a bad run comes on Sunday the 19th. The morning still has strong cross-shore winds and 5 ft swell from the WNW (combined energy 80 – still weak energy) – messy and unrideable. But by Sunday afternoon, the wind switches to a cross-offshore from the NW at 19 mph, cleaning things up. Swell drops to 5 ft from the west with a 5-second period, combined energy hitting 111 (moderate wave energy). It’s still a short-period, wind-swell type wave, not a clean groundswell, but it’s the only period in the whole 16 days where conditions align into something rideable. That’s a beginner-to-intermediate size, and it might be a bit much for absolute beginners. The cross-offshore wind is a major positive – it’ll clean up the faces. It’s not a standout by any stretch, but it’s the one window we’ve got.
After that, Monday the 20th afternoon sees a similar 5 ft WNW swell cross-shore wind and combined energy 104 (moderate wave energy), but it’s cross-shore and lumpy. Not worth it.
So, bottom line: we’ve got a long flat spell until Sunday the 19th afternoon. That afternoon is the only real look we get, and even then, you’re working with short-period wind swell. Keep your eye on it, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
