The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what's on the cards for Les Roquilles. Gotta be straight with you – this stretch is shaping up as a tough one. We're looking at a long, dry spell with hardly a wave worth paddling for.
The water's sitting at a very unusual 80°F, which is a whopping 7°F warmer than normal for this time of year. That's a real talking point at the beach, but it's about the only excitement we're getting.
Straight off the bat, Saturday the 22nd kicks things off with just a tiny 0.7ft swell from the SSW. The energy is weak, barely registering (8), and that's as good as it gets for a while. The north-northwest wind in the morning is a light cross-off, so it's clean, but there's simply nothing to ride.
From there, we slide into a proper flat spell. The swell stays minute, often under 2ft, and while the mornings do bring some clean conditions with offshore or cross-off breezes – like Sunday morning the 23rd, Monday morning the 24th, and Tuesday morning the 25th – it's all talk and no walk. The combined energy figures are pathetic, mostly single digits. You could chase a few knee-high dribbles on the Tuesday afternoon the 25th when a 4ft, 5-second wind swell pokes its head in from the SE, but with a cross-shore wind and weak energy (51), it's more of a float than a surf.
This flatness drags on right through the week. We get a few more clean mornings with light breezes, like Wednesday the 26th and Friday the 28th, but the swell stays stubbornly below 3ft. A bit more energy shows on the Wednesday morning (56), but it's from the SE and not doing much at this break. The pattern holds into the start of September, with the 1st showing another morning of clean, tiny conditions.
Things don't really change until Wednesday the 2nd of September. We get a moderate offshore breeze from the NNE all day and a consistent 2ft swell from the S, but with a short 4-second period and low energy (13 and 8), it's just a slight bump from dead flat. It's still not rideable.
Honestly, for the whole 16-day window, there isn't a single standout. The best you could hope for is a wobbly knee-high wave on a clean morning, but that's being generous. The swell is just too small and weak, with energy never breaking into the moderate range. With such poor surf quality, persistent small swell, and those moderate to fresh breezes, this setup at a beach break like Les Roquilles looks more interesting for a kite surfer getting some practice than a paddle surfer catching a wave.
Keep the board in the car and the wax in the cupboard. These flat spells are part of the deal here, but things can change quick. Hang loose.
