The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Seignosse - Les Estagnots over the next sixteen days.
Honestly, it’s a tough stretch ahead. We’re looking at a real flat spell to start, with barely a ripple for the first few days. The water is sitting at a very warm 76°, which is a full 5° warmer than usual for the time of year – that’s pretty unusual, so don’t expect that winter wetsuit just yet.
Sunday the 23rd, we’ve got a tiny 2ft NW swell with a short 8-second period, and the combined energy is weak (52). The wind is light offshore from the east in the morning, so it’s clean, but there’s just no power. Afternoon goes onshore and it’s a write-off. Monday and Tuesday are even smaller, with swells barely 0.7ft – total washout. Wednesday the 26th sees a little bump of 1ft NW, still weak energy in the 40s, but at least the wind is light and cross-offshore, keeping it clean. It’s surfable, but only just.
Thursday the 27th is where we finally see some life. The morning wave height jumps to 3ft WNW with a combined energy of 153 (moderate), but the wind is cross-onshore and light, making it messy. The afternoon shows a 5ft WNW swell with energy at 300, but period drops to 8 seconds and the wind goes cross-shore. It’s marginal at best.
Now, Friday the 28th into Saturday the 29th, the swell pumps up, but the wind ruins it. Friday morning brings a 7ft WNW swell (energy 961 – strong) with a 10-second period, but the wind is cross-onshore from the WSW. The afternoon sees a 10ft WNW swell (energy 2005 – very strong) and a longer 11-second period, but it’s howling cross-onshore at 16 mph. That kind of size and chop is only for experts and even then, it’s ugly. The setup here is a beach break, and with those strong onshore winds and big swell, this honestly looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Sunday the 30th gives us a moment of clarity. Morning brings a 4ft NW swell (energy 196) with light offshore wind from the ESE. Period is a short 8 seconds, but it’s clean. That’s the closest we get to a highlight in the first week – small, clean, and manageable for a competent surfer, but nothing to write home about.
The start of September is a slow grind. Monday the 31st and Tuesday the 1st are onshore and choppy. There’s a standout moment on Wednesday the 2nd of September: a 3ft NW swell with just 114 energy, but the conditions are glassy with a light SE wind. It’s small and clean, perfect for a longboard or a fun log. Thursday the 3rd is back down to tiny 2ft swell.
Friday the 4th of September offers the last real look. A 2ft NW swell with a 10-second period (decent shape) and light cross-offshore SE wind, giving clean conditions. Combined energy is 109 (moderate). It’s small, but it’s the best of the second week for a clean, cruisy session with no real size.
Overall, this is a pretty blank run for Les Estagnots. There’s some serious swell mid-period, but the wind turns it into a washing machine. The few clean windows are on tiny waves. No standouts to get excited about. It tends not to stay this poor for long around here, so keep an eye on the forecasts.
