The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I’m looking at the same stretch of coast for you. Seignosse - Les Estagnots is in for a pretty flat and quiet run for a while. The water’s at 75°F, which is a whopping 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year—that’s very unusual. You’ll be sweating in the lineup, but you’ll be waiting for waves.
There’s a big gap at the start. Nothing worth paddling for from Friday the 17th of July through the weekend and into the start of the next week. The swell is tiny, wind is onshore or cross-onshore, and the combined energy is just a weak whisper. A flat spell, plain and simple.
The first sign of something surfable doesn’t arrive until Tuesday the 21st of July in the morning. It’s not much—just 3ft of swell from the NNW with a short period of 6 seconds, and the combined energy is low (72). The wind is a light cross-offshore from the NNE, so it’ll be clean. The report says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” and that’s about right. It’s a one-star morning, nothing to get excited about. The afternoon gets chopped up by a moderate cross-shore breeze.
After that, we’re back into a run of poor, choppy conditions and onshore winds. The swell stays small, under 3ft, with weak energy until Thursday the 23rd of July afternoon, where it nudges up to 3ft from the NW (99 combined energy), but it’s still cross-onshore and messy.
The first real standout, and I mean the only one in the whole 16-day window, comes late in the period. Look at Sunday the 26th of July. The swell jumps to 5ft from the NW, with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy hits moderate territory (287 to 331). But here’s the thing—it’s a consistent, expert-level break, and the wind is blowing a moderate cross-onshore from the NW, making it choppy. The report says “poor surf conditions” all day. So, while there’s more water moving, the quality is a letdown. For a beach break like Les Estagnots, with that short-period swell and cross-onshore wind, it’s going to be a bumpy, dumpy mess. Frankly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Then we get a little window on Tuesday the 28th of July morning. The swell drops back to 3ft from the NW, but the wind goes glassy, coming from the east at just 3 mph. The combined energy is 129—moderate, but not huge. The report calls it “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’ll be clean, but small and weak. A one-star morning.
The final days, from the 29th of July onwards, see the swell size bump up again to 4ft and 4ft from the NW, with periods stretching to 10 seconds. The combined energy gets into the 200s and 300s, which is moderate to strong. But the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the reports are either “marginal” or “poor.” The morning of Thursday the 30th of July is labelled “marginal” with light onshore wind, and Friday the 31st of July morning has a similar call with a slight cross-onshore breeze. The swell is there, but the conditions are never quite right.
So, the honest truth? There’s no true standout session in this 16-day window. The best you’ll find are a couple of mornings with clean but small, weak waves (21st and 28th July mornings), and a few days with more swell but poor wind. It’s a long, quiet outlook for Les Estagnots. Keep an eye on the forecasts, things can change.
Rusty.
