The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for Seignosse - Les Estagnots over the next couple of weeks.
The honest truth is, we’re in for a long, slow start. The first week is pretty much a write-off for any kind of decent surf – just tiny, weak wind swell and a whole lot of chop. You’ll be waiting a good eight days before anything even starts to get interesting. Let’s get into it.
The water here is a warm 75.7°, which is a solid 6.1° above normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual, like swimming in a bath.
For the first week, from Sunday the 19th to Sunday the 26th, it’s all small, weak, messy. Swell heights are barely scraping 3 ft with periods around 5-7 seconds, and the combined energy is pathetic – mostly in the 17-88 range. The wind is all over the shop, mostly cross or onshore, so it’s just blown-out, ripply, and frustrating. There’s a couple of glassy slots on the 21st and 24th mornings, but the swell is just too small and weak to do anything with. Not worth paddling out for.
Things start to kick off around Monday the 27th. The swell builds to 4.6 ft and the energy jumps to 169, but it’s still cross-onshore and messy. By Tuesday the 28th, the swell is 7.5 ft from the WNW with 8-second period, and the energy is up to 766. That’s a moderate pulse. The morning is still a bit cross-on, but the afternoon blows up to 9.8 ft of WNW swell with a 10-second period, and the energy hits 1405. That’s strong. But here’s the catch – at 9.8 ft, this place is too big for everyone except experts. The wind is cross-shore, so it’ll be a bit lumpy, but for the big-wave crew, there’s some serious power.
Now, the standout. If you’ve got the skills, the morning of Wednesday the 29th of July is the session to circle. We’ve got a solid 7.2 ft of WNW swell, still a long 10-second period, and the energy is very strong at 1030. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the ENE, and the report says it’s clean. For experienced surfers, that’s a proper window. The wave quality is described as excellent. The only downside? This break is consistently crowded, so expect company.
Thursday the 30th morning is still okay – 4.9 ft from the NW, 8-second period, with clean offshore wind from the E. That’s a solid expert wave, but the quality drops off compared to the day before.
After that, it fades. The weekend of the 1st and 2nd of August sees the swell dropping back to 3.3-3.6 ft, but the wind is onshore or cross-on again, making it choppy and messy. The energy is down to the 168-284 range. There’s a glassy, calm morning on Monday the 3rd of August, but the swell is just 3 ft with a short period, so it’s very ordinary.
Bottom line: The first week is a dud. The real action is a week away, on the 28th, 29th, and 30th of July. The absolute best is the morning of the 29th for the experts. The rest of the window is mostly for the patient or the kooks.
