The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and let me break this down for ya. To be honest, it’s a pretty grim run ahead for La Concha Left - Playa Honda. This is one of those stretches where the ocean just isn’t playing ball for us surfers.
Right now, through the rest of August and into the first few days of September, the story is pretty much the same: tiny, weak swell. The energy is basically non-existent, with the combined energy of all swells directed here sitting at a paltry 0 to 12 (0-12). We’re talking about knee-high dribbles at best, with swell heights maxing out at a pathetic 0.7ft. The wind is a constant cross-off from the north or north-northeast, which is clean for the surface but doesn’t do a thing to help the complete lack of waves. This spot is a sheltered reef, so it takes a certain angle to get it working, and that angle just isn’t happening.
The first real pulse of any note shows up on Thursday, 27th August. The swell jumps to 7ft from the northeast, with a period of 8 seconds. That’s a short-period, wind-driven swell, and the energy reading jumps to 585 (585), which is moderate. But here’s the kicker: the wind is howling at 25 mph from the north-northeast. Even though it’s cross-off, that’s a strong breeze, and it’s likely to make the surface messy and bumpy. The swell is coming from the NE, which isn’t the optimum direction for this break (ENE is the sweet spot), so it’s going to be a bit walled-up and wonky. It’s a rare day with size, but the quality is poor. This is more of a kite-surfing setup than a pleasant paddle.
Water temp is a touch warmer than normal at 75°F, running about 3°F above average for the time of year, so a little spring suit or a shorty is your friend.
After that little blip, it’s back to the desert. From the 28th right through to the end of the forecast on the 3rd of September, we see a long, dry spell with almost no surf. The occasional 0.3ft to 0.7ft ripple from the south or east-northeast is all that’s on offer, and those are barely rideable on a log.
Honestly, for a spot that’s already inconsistent, this is a brutal run. If you’re desperate, the 27th is the only day with any size, but don’t expect a classic. Keep your eyes on the charts, things can change, but right now, the forecast is a total blank for quality waves.
