The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about La Boya over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – this outlook is a tough one. Looking at the whole 16-day window from July 17 right through to August 1, there’s no good surf on the table. Not a single session I’d call worthwhile. The finder’s come up empty, every entry flagged as poor conditions. That’s a long dry spell for a reef that’s usually fairly consistent around here, so it stings a bit. But hey, when it’s flat and messy for this long, it tends to be a temporary thing – forecasts can flip, and we’ve seen it before.
La Boya is a reef break, intermediate level, exposed to the swell. The water temp is sitting at about 84°F, which is normal for this time of year – no surprises there. But the wind’s the real killer. Almost every day the breeze is coming from the SE or ESE, blowing straight on or cross-on. That’s not doing us any favours. The swell’s small too – mostly around 4 ft to 5 ft, with a short period of just 6 to 8 seconds. That’s weak, choppy energy that never really organises. Even on the few days where the combined energy ticks up a bit, like Monday July 20 morning when it hit 469 (moderate), the onshore wind still trashes it. The swell direction is SE/ESE, but this break works best with S swell – so it’s not lining up well at all. For a reef, those short-period swells just don’t produce the kind of shape you want.
Let’s run through the dates. Friday July 17 afternoon starts off clear but with a 16 mph SE onshore – surf’s poor. Saturday July 18 has a cross-on breeze, still no go. Sunday July 19, Monday July 20, Tuesday July 21 – all onshore or cross-on, small waves, poor quality. Wednesday July 22 brings a risk of thunderstorms and even smaller swell (2 ft) with light cross-on, but still no good. That pattern repeats right through the end of July and into August 1. The only slight variation is August 1 Saturday morning: swell bumps to about 5 ft from ESE, period still short (7 sec), and the wind is a light cross-on from E at about 6 mph. That’s the closest to a half-decent window, but even then the break’s not happy – still listed as poor. No standouts, not one. If you’re desperate for a paddle, you could go, but don’t expect anything worth writing home about. For anyone else, it’s a hard pass. Keep an eye on the charts – things can turn around quickly in this part of the world. I’ll be back when there’s real surf to call.
Rusty out.
