The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the Guibia area.
Honestly, this is a tough stretch. The whole 16-day window is looking pretty grim. Out of all the days, I can only see a couple of sessions that might be worth a paddle, and even then, you’ll have to be keen. There’s a big gap with no real surf on offer from now until late August, so don’t hold your breath.
The first real chance we get is on Monday 24 August in the morning. Guibia will see a smaller swell, around 5ft, coming from the ESE. The wind will be light and cross-onshore, so it’ll be a bit bumpy, but the energy is moderate (397). It’s a marginal call, but it’s the first thing that’s not a total write-off. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual.
The standout, if you can call it that, comes in on Wednesday 26 August in the morning. The swell picks up to 7ft from the ESE, with a period of 9 seconds. That’s a decent sized groundswell, and the combined energy is strong (702). The wind is light and cross-shore, which will keep the face reasonably clean. For a reef break, that longer period should give some nice lines. But listen, 7ft is pushing into expert territory – this isn’t one for the beginners. It’s inconsistent here, so you might wait a while between sets, but when they come, they’ll have some punch. Crowds are often around, so expect company.
After that, things drop off again. There’s a small window on Saturday 29 August morning with 4ft and light winds, but it’s cross-onshore, so it’s still marginal. And then again on Sunday 30 August morning, with 6ft and a period of 9 seconds, energy is moderate (426), but the wind is light cross-onshore. It’s surfable, but nothing to get excited about.
The rest of the period is a mix of poor surf, onshore winds, or just tiny waves. There’s a session on 2 September morning with 6ft, but again, it’s cross-onshore, so it’s messy.
Overall, if you’re desperate, the Wednesday 26 August morning session is the one to target. It’s your best shot at a clean, powerful wave, but it’s for experienced surfers only. For the rest of us, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
