The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. We’ve got a 16-day window for the Guibia (Dominican Republic) zone, and I’m looking at a pretty bleak run. The good news is, there’s a tiny glimmer of hope right at the end.
Right now, and for the next couple of weeks, it’s a long stretch of nothing to write home about. The swell is small, the wind is mostly cross or cross-onshore, and the wave state is just poor. We’re talking weak energy levels, with the combined energy sitting at 81 for Monday afternoon, and only creeping up to a modest 120 or so through the week. The tide and conditions just aren’t lining up for a proper paddle. This is a reef break that’s inconsistent at the best of times, and right now, it’s not working.
The only real standout, and I mean the *only* one, is a small window on the morning of Sunday, July 19th. The swell will bump up to 5 ft from the ESE, with a period of 8 seconds. That’s not a long-period groundswell, but it’s the biggest push of the whole period. The combined energy hits 463, which is a solid moderate wave energy. The wind will be a light Easterly at 6 mph, giving us a cross-shore flow. That’s about as clean as it’s going to get. The water is running at 84°, which is about average for the time of year.
Highlight: The best bet is Sunday morning, July 19th. The swell will be 5 ft from the ESE. Get out there early, because the wind will stay light and cross-shore, making for a much cleaner ride than anything else we’ve seen. The crowds here are *often*, so expect some company. It’s not a massive swell, but it’s the best quality on offer by a long shot.
For the rest of the run, we’re looking at a lot of close-outs and choppy, onshore junk. The morning of Sunday, July 26th and Monday, July 27th have a little cross-offshore breeze, but the swell is tiny (3 ft to 3 ft) and the energy is weak (68 and 83). It’s surfable for a log, but it’s not a serious wave.
Overall, it’s a tough outlook. The first two weeks are a write-off for quality surf. The Sunday morning window is the only real chance to get something decent. Don’t hold your breath for the rest.
Stay frothy,
Rusty
