Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s happening.
Honestly, mate, the outlook for the next couple of weeks is pretty grim. We’re looking at a real flat spell with nothing worth getting excited about for a long stretch. The waves that do show up are small, short-period, and mostly bumpy. There’s barely a standout in the whole run, but we’ll work through it.
Things are dead quiet right from the start. Guibia (reef) is all we’ve got, and it’s a tough watch. The water temperature is sitting at a typical 84°, nothing unusual there. The swell is tiny and weak, with combined energy only around 115 (marginal) on Friday the 3rd of July morning, coming from the SE at 4ft with a short 7-second period. Wind is cross-onshore, so it’s choppy and messy. That pattern sticks for days.
Saturday the 4th and Sunday the 5th are no better – still small SE/ESE swells around 4ft to 5ft, wind is cross-onshore, and the energy fluctuates but never gets cooking. By Monday the 6th, the swell bumps up a touch to 5ft, energy hits 437, but the period is still short and the wind ruins it. It’s a write-off.
Tuesday the 7th afternoon shows a slight flicker: 6ft ESE swell at 8 seconds, energy 572, and the wind turns to cross-shore. That’s the best we get, but it’s still only marginal. Wednesday the 8th holds similar cross-shore conditions but the swell drops back.
Thursday the 9th morning we finally get a clean window – NNE wind at 9 mph gives us cross-offshore conditions, and the 5ft ESE swell might actually have a bit of shape. Energy is 280. This is the only real highlight in the short-term: clean faces, small but rideable. If you’re keen, that’s your window for a few grovelly ones.
After that, it’s back to onshore junk. Friday the 10th through to Monday the 13th sees swell size creep up (6ft to 7ft), but the wind is cross-onshore or onshore, and with short periods, it’s just lumpy and messy.
Saturday the 11th afternoon shows a bigger spike – 7ft from the ESE at 9 seconds, with energy jumping to 1097. That’s a lot of water moving, but the wind is directly onshore. This setup is more interesting for the kite crew than for paddle surfing. For experts only if you try it, but expect blown-out conditions.
The second week is a slow fade. From the 12th onward, swells drift between 3ft and 5ft, periods stay short, and the wind is mostly cross-onshore. There’s no real stand-out day. The 18th of July morning has a 5ft ESE swell with a clean light cross-shore wind, but the period is just 7 seconds – weak and gutless. It’s a long-range maybe, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
This is a tough run for Guibia. The reef rarely breaks cleanly in these conditions, and when the swell is small and short-period with onshore wind, it’s just not worth paddling out. Kite surfers might have a dance on a few of those bigger, windier days. For the rest of us, wait for the next system.
Rusty.
