The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down. Our main spot here is Banzai, a reef break that’s a proper advanced wave and breaks fairly consistently. Over the next two weeks, it’s looking pretty grim, honestly.
We start on Wednesday, 19 August, with a tiny 2ft swell from the ESE, period only 7 seconds, and a cross-on breeze. It’s messy, rippled, and the combined energy is a weak 59. Not worth a second look. Thursday the 20th stays small and onshore, Friday the 21st sees a bump to 4ft from the SE, period still short at 7 seconds, and while the energy ticks up to 128, it’s still cross-onshore and choppy. The weekend, 22–23 August, is more of the same – small, onshore, poor.
We hit a lull through Monday 24th to Tuesday 25th, with waves hovering around 3ft to 2ft, all onshore, all weak. By Wednesday 26th, the swell tries to push a little to 5ft from the ESE, but the period is a poor 6 seconds and it’s cross-onshore again. The combined energy reaches 141, but it’s still a messy, choppy surface.
The first real flicker of life shows up on the morning of Saturday 29 August. The swell is 4ft from the ESE, period 7 seconds, with a light 6 mph onshore breeze from the SE. The energy jumps to 261, and the report calls it marginal. It’s still onshore, so it’s not clean, but it’s the best of a pretty average bunch so far. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, no real anomaly there.
Sunday 30 August has a similar 5ft swell from the ESE, energy a solid 344, but again onshore winds. The following week, from 31 August into September, the swell drops right back down – 3ft, 2ft – and the wind stays onshore. The last recorded slot on Thursday 3 September has 4ft from the SE, period 6 seconds, energy 143, but it’s cross-onshore and choppy.
So, the honest truth? There’s no standout session in this 16-day window. It’s a long stretch of poor conditions. The only day that even flirts with being okay is the morning of Saturday 29 August, but even then, the wind is onshore and the period is short, so expect bumpy, unformed waves. For a wave of Banzai’s calibre, it’s a frustrating forecast. Keep an eye on it, because the energy is showing signs of life, but the wind just won’t play ball.
