The Lowdown
Alright, this is a tough one to call. Let’s be straight with you. I’ve looked over the next 16 days for Banzai, and honestly, it’s a pretty grim run. We’re not seeing any good surf on offer. The whole stretch from now through to the end of the month is a washout.
For the first two weeks, from July 14th all the way to July 28th, it’s a solid block of poor conditions. The swell is small and weak, coming from the southeast, which is a bad direction for this spot. Banzai is a reef break that needs a good south swell, but we’re getting a constant onshore or cross-onshore wind from the east and southeast, blowing at 9 to 15 mph. That’s just trashing any chance of a clean wave. The combined wave energy is mostly weak, sitting between 60 and 372 (weak to moderate), but the quality is just not there. You’ll see a few days where the swell height bumps up to 5 ft, but with a short period of just 7 seconds and that wind, it’s just messy, choppy, and poor. Don’t even bother paddling out.
The only faint glimmer in the whole 16-day window comes right at the very end, on Wednesday, July 29th, in the morning. The swell picks up a bit, hitting 6 ft from the east-southeast, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 738 (strong), which is the biggest number we see. But here’s the catch: the wind is still onshore from the southeast at 9 mph, and it’s a risk of thunderstorms. The forecast itself calls it "marginal" at best. For a reef break, that onshore wind is a dealbreaker. It’s going to be bumpy and the tide might mess with it. If you’re an expert and absolutely desperate, it might be a session, but it’s not the kind of thing I’d get excited about. The water temperature is about 84°F with a normal anomaly of 1°F, so it’s warm, but that’s not going to save the waves.
This is a classic case of no good options in the window. When a spot like this has a blank run, it’s not unusual. The setup is more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer with this constant onshore wind and short-period chop. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d save the wax and wait for a better swell and a proper offshore wind.
