The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and settle in, because I’ve stared at the charts for this stretch, and I’ve got some news for you. It’s not the news we want, but it’s the news we’ve got.
The short version is this: we’re looking at a long, flat, and frustrating run for the next couple of weeks. There’s no sugar-coating it. The surf is essentially non-existent for the vast majority of the forecast, and what little bump we do see is hardly worth getting wet for. We’re talking about a serious dry spell.
We start off with flat, poor conditions through Sunday the 23rd and into Monday the 24th. There’s a tiny blip of 7ft swell on Monday morning, but the wind is a cross-onshore mess, making it chopped-out and poor. That’s not surf; that’s just a washing machine you have to paddle through. Forget it.
From there, the bottom falls out. We’re looking at a long stretch from Tuesday the 25th all the way through to the end of the month, and into the start of September, with nothing but tiny, weak pulses. Most of this time the swell is sitting at a pathetic 0.3ft. There’s plenty of clean, offshore wind at times, especially around the 28th to the 30th, but with nothing to push it, it’s just a glassy lake. The energy reading is next to nothing, all single digits. It’s the kind of week where you’d be better off checking the kitesurf forecast, because for a wave rider, there’s just nothing here. This run of flatness is going to feel like an eternity.
Now, there is one slight flicker of life coming our way, but it’s a long way off. Heading into the first week of September, we finally start to see some proper long-period groundswell on the charts. Around the morning of Tuesday the 1st and into Wednesday the 2nd, we’ve got a 0.7ft swell with a period pushing 15 seconds. The energy reading bumps up a touch, getting into the 40s. But, and it’s a big but, this is a whisper, not a roar. It’s promising because the period is there, which usually means some shape and push, but the size is just so small.
The one spot that might just see a couple of clean nuggets on those days is Ingrina. It’s a sheltered reef, so it can grab those long-period swells when other spots are dead flat. On the morning of the 2nd, we have a 0.7ft SSW groundswell with that 15-second period, and with a fresh offshore N wind, it could be glassy and clean. But don’t get too excited, it’s inconsistent, and we’re only talking about knee-to-waist-high waves at best. It’s a spot for a longboard and some patience, not a day for a high-performance shortboard. This is that long-range promise I was talking about – it looks good on paper, but it’s a long way out, and forecasts can change.
Water temp at Ingrina is 68°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want the full wetsuit.
So, to sum it up: keep your board in the car for a couple of weeks, maybe find a nice spot to stretch, and start getting properly keen for that first week of September. That’s your best shot at getting a few clean ones, but even that is a “maybe” and a “small”. It’s a waiting game, lads.
Rusty.
