The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for any real surf. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak waves ahead, so don’t be in a hurry to drag your board down to the beach just yet. We’re looking at a solid gap of poor conditions for the first week, with only a glimmer of hope towards the end of the window.

The first real chance of anything decent won't show up until Tuesday the 19th of August. Before that, it’s all ankle-biters and knee-high slop. We’re talking swell heights mostly under 2 ft, with the energy reading just 47 (weak) on the morning of the 6th, and dropping off from there. It’s a real desert out there.

Then, on the 17th of August, things start to get *interesting*, but not necessarily *good*. The swell jumps up to 4 ft from the WSW on Monday morning, and by the afternoon it’s pushing 5 ft. The energy is building too, hitting 119 and then 252 (moderate). But here’s the catch – the wind is going to be howling onshore from the WNW, making a messy, choppy mess of it. That’s not good surf, that’s a washing machine. Conditions are set to be "poor surf conditions" with a moderate cross-onshore breeze. This one is for the crew who just need to get wet, not for anyone looking for a clean wave.

The standout, and really the only one worth circling on the calendar, is the morning of Wednesday the 19th of August. The swell settles down to a clean 4.6 ft from the WNW, with a period of 8 seconds. The energy behind it is reading 367 (moderate). But the real beauty is the wind. It’s forecast to be glassy, absolutely dead calm. We’re talking clean, lined-up swell. This is your window. Looking at the guidance, the optimum direction for this break is from the NNW, so the WNW swell isn't perfect, but it's still the best we're going to get over this whole period. It’s going to be a bit full for the beginners out there – that size is pushing the limits – but for the rest of you, this is the dawn patrol to make.

After that, it looks like it drops back off again. The energy backs down to 37 (weak) on the 20th, and the wind turns onshore again in the afternoon. A couple of showers roll through on the 21st with more of the same small, wind-affected surf. So there you have it. A long, flat spell, one juicy, clean morning on the 19th, and then back to the waiting game. Keep your eye on that Wednesday forecast.

Stay salty.

Short Range Forecast

Mostly dry. Warm (max 29°C on Sat afternoon, min 15°C on Thu morning). Winds decreasing (fresh winds from the NW on Thu night, light winds from the WSW by Fri afternoon).

Days 5-7 Weather Summary

Light rain (total 5mm), mostly falling on Sat night. Warm (max 27°C on Sat night, min 20°C on Mon morning). Wind will be generally light.
