The Lowdown
Alright, let me tell ya, it’s a grim picture. We’re talking about the Himalayas, a reef break, and for the next 16 days, there’s just no swell to speak of. It’s a long, quiet stretch, and nothing stands out as a good session.
The first bit of action – and I use that word loosely – is on Sunday, the 23rd of August. A tiny WNW swell of about 2ft, with a period of 11 seconds. The combined swell energy is a weak 111. The wind is a stiff 18 mph out of the ENE, but it’s a cross-off, so the waves will be clean. Water temp is around 81°, which is normal for the season. This is a day for a longboard at best.
Monday the 24th is even smaller, with the swell dropping to 2ft from the NW. Wind eases to 15 mph, still cross-off. Energy is a pathetic 67. It’s flat.
From Tuesday the 25th through Sunday the 30th, it’s a slow death. Swell sizes bounce between 0.3ft and 1ft, with energy readings mostly in the teens and twenties. The wind stays a steady cross-off. It’s nice weather, but terrible for surfing.
There’s a brief pulse on Monday the 31st of August. A short-period NE swell jumps to 4ft to 5ft, but the period is a miserable 6 to 7 seconds. Combined energy hits 167, but it’s a messy, choppy windswell. The wind is cross-off at 12 mph, so it’ll look clean, but those short-period waves will be weak and crumbly. Not worth the drive.
From the 1st of September onward, it’s a total wasteland. Days of zero swell. A few tiny 0.7ft pulses from the W or N show up on the 4th, 5th, and 7th of September, but the energy is in the single digits or low 40s. The wind finally drops to a light breeze on the 7th, shifting to a true cross-shore, but with a swell of 0.7ft, it’s a total non-event.
This is a dry spell, plain and simple. For a spot like this, it’s not unusual to have long gaps with no surf. The only thing that might get a kiter interested is that 31st of August bump, with that 5ft of short-period windswell and a consistent cross-off wind. But for paddle surfing? Forget it. Put the boards in the garage, go grab a coffee, and check back later. Forecasts can always change, but right now, there’s nothing to ride.
