G'day, Rusty here. Look, I've stared at this forecast for the Himalayas, and I've got to be straight with you—it's a tough one. There’s nothing good on the cards for the next couple of weeks. We've got a long, flat spell stretching from now until the end of the second week of July. That’s a solid 12 or 13 days with zero recommendations. The only glimmer of something happening on the charts is around Tuesday the 14th of July, and even then, it’s marginal.
So let's talk about what's actually going on. Through to July 13th, we've got tiny, weak swells, barely breaking 2ft. The wind is coming in cross-off from the east-northeast, a relentless 12 to 18 mph breeze that’s just chopping everything up. The water temp is 79° with a tiny anomaly of +0.4°, so it’s basically average for the time of year. The combined swell energy is pitiful—way down in the double digits most days, barely hitting triple digits on a couple of afternoons. It’s clean, sure, but there’s nothing to ride.
Around the 12th of July, we do see a bit of a pulse. A long-period groundswell starts to show up from the southwest, with periods hitting 17 seconds and the combined energy climbing into the low 200s (197 to 287). Still, the wave height is only 2ft to 2ft. A long-period swell like that, with 15 to 17 seconds between waves, is full of energy but it’s going to feel fat and slow on a reef setup like this. The optimum swell direction for this break is northwest, and this is coming from the southwest, so it’s not hitting the spot right. The cross-off wind stays on it.
By the 14th of July, the forecast finally dips a toe into "marginal" territory. Swell holds around 2ft from the west, period at 16 seconds, with energy in the 260s. It’s still not enough to get excited about. This is an advanced, consistent reef break, and on those days, a 2ft wave with a long period is barely going to wrap in. The wind holds steady at cross-off. For a beginner, anything over 5ft is too much, but here the problem is the opposite—it’s just too small.
If you’re determined to paddle out, your best (and really only) shot is Tuesday the 14th of July. Think of it as a hope-soak, not a stand-out. You’d be looking at waist-high lines, very clean from the cross-off, but with a long wait between sets. Crowds are listed as "sometimes" possible, but honestly, with this lack of swell, the lineup should be empty.
This spot is an exposed, advanced reef, and with these tiny, long-period westerly pulses and persistent side-offshore wind, it’s looking more like a spot to sit and watch the horizon than to actually score. For kite surfing? Maybe. The clean, steady cross-off wind and small waves would be perfect for a foil or kite session, but for a pure paddle surfer, it’s a hard pass. I can’t stretch the truth here; the 16-day window is a blank run. This is a place that just goes quiet for long stretches—you have to wait for a proper groundswell to line up from the northwest.
Stay patient. Keep an eye on the charts.
Rusty.
