The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. The outlook for the Himalayas is a bit of a tough one. We’ve got a long stretch ahead, but honestly, there’s not a single session that really stands out as a winner. The swell is small and the energy is low across the board, so we’re looking at a pretty flat run for the next two weeks.
The first hint of anything rideable shows up on the morning of the 19th of August. We’re looking at a weak 2ft swell from the NE, with a short period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is weak at 112, and while the wind is a gentle cross-off from the E, the wave call is “poor surf conditions.” It’s just not enough push to get excited about. That afternoon the energy actually drops to 64, so no improvement there.
Thursday the 20th is more of the same – tiny 2ft NE swell, period still short at 6-7 seconds, energy dropping to 40 and 44. The wind goes cross-shore, which is okay, but the waves are gutless. Friday morning the 21st is the closest we get to a highlight, and that’s a real stretch. We get glassy conditions, a light wind from the E, and a slightly bigger 3ft NE swell. The period is still short at 7 seconds though, and the energy is only 113. It’s clean, but it’s tiny and weak. The afternoon swings to a 2ft W swell with a longer 11-second period, but the energy is only 59, and with a cross-off wind, it’s a flat, clean lineup with no real power.
From Saturday the 22nd of August all the way through to the end of the month, the swell stays in the 0.7ft to 2ft range, with periods varying from 9 to 14 seconds. The wind is mostly a moderate cross-off, keeping the surface clean, but the real killer is the lack of size. The energy readings are mostly in the double digits, rarely breaking 100. For example, on the 24th of August, the morning shows a 2ft swell with energy of 104, but it’s still “poor surf conditions.” The afternoon of the 30th of August has a 1.0ft swell from the W with a 14-second period, but with only 33 energy, it’s just not happening.
We’ve got a solid blank run here. The conditions are often clean, but without any significant swell, there’s just nothing to surf. The Himalayas is a reef break that’s consistent, but even consistency can’t make up for a total lack of ocean energy. This setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, honestly. The forecasts can always change, but for now, leave the boards in the car.
Rusty, signing off.
