The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the Himalayas over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a long, quiet stretch ahead. The water temp is sittin’ at 80°, which is pretty spot on for this time of year, nothin’ weird there. But for the next week and a half, the surf is flat to tiny. From Saturday the 22nd right through to Saturday the 29th, we’re lookin’ at waves mostly between 1.0 ft and 2 ft, with a bit of WNW to NW swell but the energy is weak – combined energy values are barely crackin’ 100 (like 44 to 111). The wind is a steady cross-off from the E/ENE at 15–19 mph, so it’s clean but there’s just no power to work with. Honestly, it’s a blank run for paddle surfing – you’d be better off with a kite if you’re desperate.
Then on Sunday the 30th of August, we get a spike of short-period NE swell – 5 ft to 5 ft, but only 7 seconds, so it’s a bit bumpy and won’t hold shape well. Combined energy jumps to 237–260 (moderate), but the wind is still cross-off and the quality is poor, so it’s not a day to get excited about.
The first real standout doesn’t show up until Wednesday the 2nd of September. That morning, we’ve got a 5 ft NE swell with 8-second period, but the wind is light cross-on from the N at 3 mph, so it’s messy. Then, Wednesday afternoon – that’s the pick of the whole forecast. The wind goes glassy from the NNE at 3 mph, and we’ve got 5 ft of NE swell still pushin’ in. Combined energy is 321 (moderate), and the rating says it’s good surf. That’s your window, right there. Clean, glassy conditions, and the swell is big enough to be fun but not too big for most. Keep in mind this is a reef break, and it’s advanced-level, so it’s not for the groms or beginners. Crowds are sometimes an issue, so you might have some company.
Thursday the 3rd of September morning is also glassy from the ENE with 4 ft of NE swell (8 seconds), combined energy 255 – another solid option, but the afternoon gets a bit crossed up. After that, it fades fast into small dribble through the 4th to the 6th, with waves dropping to 1.0 ft–2 ft and long-period W swells (15–16 seconds) that just don’t have enough size. So, if you’re chasin’ waves, lock in that Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning.
This is Rusty, signin’ off.
