The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. This is Rusty, and I’m looking at the Himalayas surf outlook, and I’ll be honest with you – it’s a tough one. For the first week and a half, we’re looking at a whole lot of nothing. The swell is tiny, the energy is low, and the conditions are just plain poor for surfing. We’ve got a long dry spell from the start of the forecast right through to the end of July, with only a few scraps of ankle-high, weak swell that won’t get your heart racing. The wind is a steady cross-off breeze from the east and east-northeast, but it’s blowing over waves that are barely there, so it doesn’t matter much. The energy readings are all in the double digits or single digits, which is weak and weak (values like 57, 29, 11, 0). You’re better off doing something else for a while.
Then, on Sunday, the 26th of July, things finally wake up. We get a pulse of 6ft swell from the northeast, but it’s a short period of 8 seconds, so it’s a bit junky and messy. The energy jumps to 434, which is moderate, but the wave comment says “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions.” It’s a reef break, so that short period, onshore-ish swell might not line up well. The wind is still cross-off, so it won’t be a total washout, but don’t expect perfection. Monday, the 27th, drops to 6ft and then 5ft, still from the northeast with the same short period, and energy in the low-to-mid 300s and 200s. Still marginal. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
The only real standout, if you can call it that, is that stretch from Sunday the 26th to Tuesday the 28th of July. The swell is over 5ft, so it’s not for the groms or beginners, but it’s not huge either. The wind is cross-off, which is clean, but the short period means the waves will be a bit fat and close out at a reef like this. It’s a consistent break, so it will be breaking, but the quality is questionable. The optimum swell direction for this spot is from the northwest, and we’re getting northeast, so that’s a mismatch. The crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so you might get a few other heads out there, but it won’t be a circus.
After that, it fades fast. The 29th and 30th of July drop back to waist-high junk, and then we’re into another flat spell until the very end of the forecast. The 31st of July has a tiny 1ft, 16-second pulse from the southwest, which is a long period, but the energy is only 75, so it’s weak. And then on the 1st of August, we get a little 1ft, 17-second pulse from the west-northwest, which is actually from the right direction, but the energy is only 108 and 101, so it’s still weak. That’s a long period, clean swell, but the size is tiny. It might be a fun, glassy session on a longboard if you’re patient, but it’s not a standout.
So, here’s the takeaway: the best window is Sunday, the 26th of July, to Tuesday, the 28th of July. The swell is there, it’s consistent, but the quality is marginal due to the short period and the wrong direction. It’s a reef, so it might handle it better than a beach break, but it’s not a classic. If you’re an expert looking for something to do, give it a go. Everyone else, wait for a better forecast.
This is Rusty, signing off.
