The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s lined up for us over the next sixteen days. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch for the Himalayas. The first ten days or so are mostly a write-off, with barely a ripple to get excited about. We’ve got a long gap of really poor conditions before things try to pull themselves together in the last week.
Right now, we’re looking at a long, flat spell. From Sunday the 19th of July right through to Saturday the 26th, the swell is tiny or non-existent. Even when there’s a bit of movement, it’s just weak, short-period dribble. The combined energy is pitiful, often in the single digits (7 – 41 range). The wind is a constant cross-off from the ENE, but with no swell to work with, it’s just a tease. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
Then, on Sunday the 26th of July, things finally change. The afternoon brings a pulse of 6 ft swell from the NE, but with a short period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 463, which is a moderate push. However, the quality is still described as "marginal," and the wind is a steady cross-off from the ENE at 12 mph. This is a reactive, short-period swell, so it won’t be the cleanest, and for a reef setup like this, it could be a bit lumpy. It’s a step up from nothing, but it’s not a standout.
Monday the 27th of July holds onto some size with 5 ft from the NE, still a short 8-second period. The energy is moderate (283), and the wind is still cross-off. It’s still only in the "marginal" category. Given the size is over 5 ft, this is getting into the intermediate-to-advanced zone, but the short period and cross-off wind won’t make it easy.
After Monday, it fades back into a flat spell. We see a tiny blip on the 28th with a 3 ft, 7-second swell, but it’s got poor energy (75) and is rated "poor." Then on the 30th of July, there’s a very long-period 1 ft groundswell from the SW (18 seconds!), but it’s tiny and the wind is cross-shore, so it’s a no-go. The first week of August is dead flat again.
To be honest, the only window that offers any size is that Sunday 26th and Monday 27th of July. The 5 ft to 6 ft NE swell is the biggest we’ll see, but the short period and constant cross-off wind mean it’s more of a wildcard than a sure thing. With the energy being moderate and the conditions only "marginal," it’s not a day to get your hopes up too high. For a reef break, a long-period groundswell would be ideal, but this short-period stuff isn't its best friend.
If you're an expert looking for a project, that Sunday or Monday might be worth a paddle, but for everyone else, it’s a long wait for very little reward. The crowds are listed as "sometimes" at this spot, so on a day with actual swell, you might have some company.
Rusty.
