The Lowdown
Alright folks, ol’ Rusty here. Let’s have a yarn about what’s on offer at Himalayas over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with ya – it’s a grim stretch.
Right from the get-go, there’s basically nothing to get excited about. The whole 16-day window is a total bust for a proper paddle session. We’re staring down a long, dry run with no decent surf on the cards. From Friday the 21st of August right through to Saturday the 5th of September, it’s all showing as poor surf. Don’t bother checking the forecast for a sneaky window, because there isn’t one.
The Himalayas (Hawaii) break is a consistent reef, but the swell is tiny. You’re looking at waves in the 0.7 ft to 3 ft range most of the time. The biggest pulse is that 3 ft on Friday morning, but it’s from the NNE with a short, weak 7-second period and combined energy of just 95. That’s not enough to get a longboard moving, let alone a shortboard. The water is warm at 80°, which is about average for this time of year, not that you’ll be doing much surfing.
Winds are mostly cross-off from the east, which would be fine if there was any swell. They get a bit stiff at times, pushing 19 to 25 mph, but that just adds to the frustration. The couple of days on the 4th and 5th of September do offer a gentle offshore breeze from the ESE, and there’s a spike in period on the 5th with a 20-second groundswell from the SW and combined energy hitting 105. But the wave height is still only 1.0 ft. That long period would make for nice lines if the swell had any power, but as it stands, it’s a tease.
Honestly, for the whole 16 days, there’s nothing that stands out as worth paddling out for. The energy is too low, the waves are too small. It’s a real quiet spell. Given how consistent this spot usually is, it’s a surprising blank run, but that’s the hand we’re dealt.
Rusty, signing off.
