The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for the Himalayas.
Right off the bat, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it: the 16-day window is a tough one. We’ve got a real slow start, and for the first few days, the surf is just not there. The water temp is sitting at 79°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so at least the water’s nice.
The first real chance to get wet comes on Tuesday afternoon, 14 July. We’ve got a small NE swell rolling in at 4 ft, but it’s short period stuff at 7 seconds, so it’s gonna be a bit crumbly. The wind is cross-off from the ENE at 12 mph, keeping things clean enough. The combined energy is moderate (473), but honestly, it’s just marginal surf. It’s a reef break, so it's consistent, but it’s really only for the advanced crew. The swell direction is NE, and the optimum here is NW, so it’s not lining up perfectly. Crowds are always a possibility here.
Wednesday 15 July is the standout, and I mean the only real highlight. Morning session is the pick. The swell drops to 2 ft, but it switches to a long-period groundswell from the west at 15 seconds. That’s a proper pulse. The combined energy is still moderate (380), and the wind is a gentle breeze from the east at 9 mph, cross-off, keeping it glassy. Expect clean, lined-up waves, but that long period means it’ll be a bit more suited to the reef setup here. The afternoon follows the same pattern, just slightly less energy (278). This is the best on offer.
After that, it’s a slow fade. Thursday 16 July sees the swell drop to 2 ft with a 14-second period, but the wind picks up to 16 mph in the afternoon, making conditions poor. From Friday 17 July right through to Monday 28 July, it’s a long stretch of tiny surf, poor conditions, and combined energy values dropping into the weak range (lower than 100). There are days with complete flat spells, like 21 and 22 July, with zero energy. This is a bleak run.
Towards the end of the window, on Tuesday 29 July morning, we see a tiny uptick: a 3 ft NNE swell with an 8-second period, giving moderate energy (112). But the wind is still cross-off and moderate, and the forecast says poor surf conditions. Not worth getting excited about.
So, to sum it up: Wednesday 15 July morning is your one and only shot at something clean and fun. After that, we’re looking at a solid 11-day stretch of nothing worth paddling out for. For a consistent reef like this, it’s unusual to have such a blank run – but when it’s flat, it’s flat. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it, but for now, I’d be taking that Wednesday session and calling it a win.
Rusty.
