Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what the next couple of weeks are shaping up like for this spot.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a pretty grim start. We’re looking at a long, flat spell. From now through the first week of July, there’s basically nothing worth paddling out for. The first few days have tiny, weak swell with combined energy barely scratching the surface (48), and a stiff cross-off breeze in the 12–18 mph range. The water temp is sitting at 79°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so you can't even blame a cold snap for the lack of action. The surf’s just not there. That flat, quiet run stretches all the way from Friday the 3rd right through to the end of the day on Thursday the 9th. It’s a real bummer.
Things finally start to twitch a little on Saturday the 11th of July. We see a jump in swell height to about 4ft coming from the NNE, but the period is a short, choppy 8 seconds, and the energy (237) is still only moderate. The wind stays cross-off, so it’s clean, but this is really just a marginal, borderline session. Sunday the 12th is much the same – 5ft from the NE but still a short period. The waves are there, but the quality is ordinary.
Now, here’s where my ears perk up. Late in the window, on Tuesday the 14th of July, things suddenly get interesting. The swell drops back to a modest 2ft, but the period stretches out to a very long 16 seconds coming from the west. The combined energy pumps up to a solid 419. This is pure groundswell energy. For a reef break like Himalayas, that long-period W swell with a gentle 9 mph ENE breeze (cross-off) is the standout of the whole outlook. It’ll be clean, the sets will be lined up and have some proper punch for the size, and you’ll get nice lulls between the bigger waves. This is the session I’d be marking on the calendar.
Wednesday the 15th of July holds a similar idea – 2ft, 16-second period from the west – with a lighter breeze. The energy drops to 283, so Tuesday is definitely the peak. After that, things start to fade again into the weekend with smaller, weaker swells.
So, if you’re sitting through this dry spell, hang in there. The only real highlight on offer is that Tuesday the 14th. It’s a long way off, but those long-period west groundswells on a reef with clean wind are rare. It’s a true standout for this window.
Stay patient.
Rusty.
