The Lowdown
Alright, let me take a look at what we’ve got. Straight up, I gotta be honest with you – this is a tough stretch for the Himalayas. Over the next 16 days, the surf is looking pretty flat. The first few days are barely a ripple, and it doesn’t really get going anywhere near what we’d call a proper session. The water temp is about what you’d expect for this time of year, nothing unusual.
The first real pulse of energy sneaks in on Saturday the 22nd in the afternoon. We’ve got a 3ft swell coming from the WNW, with a period of 13 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell, long lines. The combined energy hits 198 (moderate), but the wind is a cross-off from the E at 15 mph. It’s clean, but the swell is tiny. For a reef break, that’s a real tease. The direction is NW, which is what the spot likes, but the size just isn’t there.
The next morning, Sunday the 23rd, is the closest thing to a standout in this whole 16-day forecast. A 3ft WNW swell, period 11 seconds, energy at 162 (moderate). But again, that’s hardly going to have you paddling out with a smile. The wind is a fresh cross-off at 19 mph, keeping it clean but blowing hard. The crowd factor is “sometimes,” so you might have a few others out, but honestly, with waves this small, it’ll be a bit of a scratch-fest.
After that, it just fades away. There’s a prolonged gap from Monday the 24th all the way through to Monday the 31st of August where the swell is below 2ft, energy is weak, and the wind stays onshore or cross-off. The 31st shows a tiny bump of 2ft from the SW with a 10-second period and energy of 131, but it’s still small. The wind is moderate cross-off, so it’s not a write-off, but it’s not a write-home either.
To be blunt, this is a poor run for the Himalayas. The swell is too small and the wind, while not terrible, is never truly glassy except for a brief moment on the Friday the 21st morning, where we get 2ft from the NNE with glassy conditions – but again, tiny. For a reef break that needs a bit of push, this is a waiting game.
If you’re a kite surfer, the fresh wind on the 23rd and 24th might be more interesting than the paddle surfing. For the rest of us, I’d keep the board in the car and check the forecast closer to the date.
