The Lowdown
Alright mates, Rusty here. Let’s be straight about Folkestone – the next 16 days are a tough watch. There’s nothing close to a proper session on the cards, and most of the time it’s either flat or blown out.
The first real chance is a no-go. Sunday the 23rd has a 0.3ft dribble from the west, cross-onshore wind, and combined energy of just (1) – flat and choppy. Monday and Tuesday the 24th and 25th keep up the same story: weak, short-period windswell with cross-shore winds grinding it up. Wednesday the 26th through Friday the 28th morning stays tiny, under 2ft, though Friday morning gets clean with a light cross-offshore breeze – still, there’s almost no energy (3). Not worth getting wet.
The one little bump rolls in late Friday the 28th afternoon with 5ft from the southwest, but the wind goes cross-shore, making it lumpy. Saturday the 29th morning is clean with cross-offshore wind, but only 3ft (energy of 83). It’s rideable but nothing memorable. Then Sunday the 30th afternoon brings the biggest pulse: 6ft from the SSW, clean cross-offshore wind, and combined energy jumps to (204). That’s the peak of the whole period, but the period is only 6 seconds – local windswell, fat and steep. It’ll be too big for beginners, but for experienced surfers, it might offer a few lumpy walls. The clean wind helps, but short-period swell like this doesn’t hold shape well.
After that, the first week of September goes flat again. Monday the 31st morning is clean but weak (2ft, energy of 34), then a near gale hits in the afternoon. Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd get back to tiny clean waves under 2ft. There’s a late flash on Saturday the 5th September with 5ft to 5ft from the southwest (energy of 94 to 155), but the wind is messy and the quality is still poor. Direction lines up with Folkestone’s optimum, so that’s a positive, but the cross-shore wind ruins it. The rest of the run is flat or near-flat.
No true standouts here. The best is Sunday the 30th August afternoon: 6ft (SSW), glassy clean cross-offshore wind, but short period. It’s a long way out, so take the forecast with a pinch of salt. The water temperature is running much warmer than normal at 69°, which is more than three degrees above average – pretty weird.
If you’re a kiter, those days with consistent cross-offshore wind and moderate swell might get you out. For a surfer, this is a full-on dry spell. Folkestone goes quiet like this sometimes, and that’s just the way it is. Forecasts can change, but right now, you’re looking at a 16-day stretch of nothing special.
Rusty.
