The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Truth be told, we’re looking at a long, quiet stretch. For the next week and a half, there’s nothing really worth paddling out for. The energy just isn’t there, and the conditions are messy. You’ll be waiting a good while before anything changes.
The first real hint of life shows up around Tuesday, September 1st, but even then, it’s a tricky one. On Tuesday morning we’ll see a 3 ft swell from the SW, with a strong offshore wind from the NW. That’ll make for clean, glassy faces, but with a period of only 4 seconds, it’s going to be weak and choppy – not much power behind it. The combined energy is a paltry 49, so it’s really just a whisper.
The standout moment, and the only one worth getting excited about, is on Tuesday afternoon, September 1st. The swell jumps up to 8 ft from the SSW, with a period of 7 seconds. That’s a solid, punchy wave, and with a fresh offshore wind from the NW, the conditions will be clean, crisp, and lined up. The combined energy hits 536, which is a serious kick of power. This is a wave for experienced surfers only – it’ll be too heavy for beginners. The water temperature is 70°, which is much warmer than we’d expect for this time of year, so at least you won’t need a thick wetsuit.
The only spot to consider is Folkestone, a beach and reef setup that’s sheltered from the swell. It’s an inconsistent break, so when it does fire, it’s worth the wait. Because it’s a sheltered spot, it’ll handle that strong offshore wind well. Keep in mind, crowds are possible here, so get there early.
After that afternoon surge, we’re back to zero. Wednesday, September 2nd, has nothing at all. So, your window is narrow: Tuesday afternoon is the one to go for. It’s a long way out, so keep an eye on the forecasts, but if it holds, that’s your wave.
Rusty.
