The Lowdown
Right then, let's have a look at what's on offer for Folkestone over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you, it's a bleak picture for the most part. The water's sitting at 65°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that's about the only thing that's working in our favour.
From Wednesday July 15 right through to Monday July 27, there's just nothing to get excited about. It's a proper dead spell. The winds are mostly cross or cross-off from the north-east, but the swell is tiny, weak, and coming from the wrong direction. The combined wave energy is barely a whisper, staying well under 100 for the whole stretch. On the 15th and 16th, we're looking at short-period, 3ft to 4ft lumps from the NE, but it's all cross-shore chop. Yep, poor surf conditions across the board.
There's a brief flicker on the morning of Friday July 17 with a clean-looking 2ft wave from the NE, but again, the energy is tiny (29) and the period is short. It might look okay from the car park, but it won't be worth paddling out for.
After that, we get a massive gap. From Saturday July 18 all the way through to Tuesday July 22, there's zero swell – just flat, clean conditions. You could take a longboard out for a paddle, but you won't be catching a thing.
Eventually, on the morning of Thursday July 23, we see a tiny pulse of 0.3ft from the SW (combined energy 1). That's not surf, that's a ripple. Friday July 24 offers clean offshore conditions from the NW, but again, no swell to speak of.
Finally, on Saturday July 25 and Sunday July 26, we get the closest thing to a highlight. The wind goes glassy in the mornings, which is beautiful. But the swell is only 0.7ft on Saturday and 0.3ft on Sunday. The direction is WSW and SW, which is the optimum direction for this sheltered spot, but the size is laughable. The combined energy is a 1. It's absolutely tiny.
The forecast then shows another push on Tuesday July 28 morning, with 2ft from the E and clean conditions, and then a bit more on Thursday July 30 afternoon with 4ft from the SW (energy 46). But honestly, for a break that's already inconsistent, this whole run is about as poor as it gets. The spot is sheltered and needs a proper SW swell to work. We're just not getting it. If the wind stays up and the swell stays small and weak at a beach-and-reef setup like this, it might honestly be more interesting for kite surfing than paddling a surfboard.
Stick with the longboard for a paddle, or wait for the next forecast. Fingers crossed it changes.
