The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look what’s on offer for the next couple weeks here at Folkestone.
To put it bluntly, the 16-day window looks like a bleak run for paddle surfing. The finder doesn’t put a single recommendation forward, and when I dig into the forecasts, it’s pretty clear why. There are long stretches where the swell is a flat zero, with only tiny, weak pulses popping up now and again. For instance, from the 21st of July through to the 1st of August, there are many days with no surf to speak of, and the few times we do see a wave, it’s hardly worth the paddle out.
We do get a little bump on the afternoon of the 2nd of August. Swell comes from the NE at 3ft, with a period of 6 seconds. That’s a short-period, localised wind swell. The combined energy is weak, only 68, so there’s not much push behind it. The wind on Sunday afternoon is a cross-onshore from the SSW at 12 mph, which will chop things up a bit, making it messy. Folkestone is a beach and reef setup, sheltered and best with a SW swell. This NE swell isn’t its ideal direction, so the quality will be poor. It’s really only going to interest someone desperate for a splash, and even then, it won’t be pretty.
The water temperature is a standout though. At 67° on the 19th of July, that’s a whopping 6° warmer than average for this time of year. That’s very unusual, like a little tropical anomaly right here. The water will still be feeling that warmth well into the period, so at least the paddle won’t be a cold one.
Stick with it, though. Forecasts can change, and with a few consistent swells over the horizon, it won’t stay this quiet forever.
