Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Folkestone’s got cookin’ over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, straight up, it’s a tough stretch ahead. We’re lookin’ at a real dry spell with barely a ripple worth paddlin’ for. The whole 16-day window is basically a write-off – there are no standouts, no days where you’d wanna race down there. The first glimmer of anything that could be called surf doesn’t even show up until the afternoon of Saturday the 5th of July, and even that’s a puny 0.4m.
We start off Friday the 3rd of July with completely flat, glassy conditions – 0.1m and no energy. Saturday the 4th of July morning is still flat and clean, but by the afternoon we see a tiny bump of 0.7m from the SW with a short, weak 4-second period. The wind’s cross-off and clean, but there’s just no power behind it.
Sunday the 5th of July morning you might catch a glimpse of something – offshore wind from the WNW at 15 km/h, but it’s only 0.1m. The afternoon picks up slightly to 0.4m from the SW, but the period is a weak 4 seconds. Monday the 6th of July sees similar tiny, weak scraps. From Tuesday the 7th of July right through to Saturday the 18th of July, it’s a mix of flat spells, tiny windswell, and cross-shore winds. The biggest bump in the whole forecast is on Tuesday the 14th of July afternoon, with 1.0m from the NE and a 4-second period, but that’s accompanied by a fresh 30 km/h cross-shore wind making it lumpy and messy.
For a sheltered spot like Folkestone that needs that SW swell, this is just a dead period. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no excuses there – just a total lack of ocean energy. There’s no point sugar-coating it: if you’re lookin’ for a surf, you’re better off finding something else to do. With those small, weak, and often choppy conditions, this setup would be far more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.
Hang in there, folks. There’s nothing on the horizon right now, but that can always change.
Rusty.
