Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what mother nature’s got lined up for us.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this forecast is a tough one. We’re looking at a long, quiet stretch ahead for Folkestone. There’s no surf worth paddling out for until we get well into the period, which is a bummer. The first recommendation doesn't kick in until Saturday, July 12th.
So, for the first week, things are flat or just plain ugly. We've got a few days with tiny little bumps, but the wind is all wrong – cross-off or onshore – and the energy is zilch. On Wednesday morning the 8th, it’s glassy but the swell is a pathetic 0.3 ft. You’d be better off just having a swim. Then it turns choppy and onshore, so no joy there.
We wait all the way until Saturday, July 12th for something to show up. Even then, it’s not pretty. The swell picks up to 4 ft from the NE, but the period is a short 5 seconds and it’s a strong cross-shore breeze at 25 mph. The combined swell energy is only 115 (moderate), but it’s messy. The wind will tear it to bits. This is more of a kite-surfing day than a paddle-surfing day, to be honest.
The one and only standout is Sunday morning, July 13th. The swell holds at 4 ft from the NE, period still short at 5 seconds, but the wind is a “fresh breeze” at 22 mph and cross-shore. It’s still lumpy, but the combined energy is 94 – just a hair under moderate. If you’re an experienced surfer hungry for any wave and you don’t mind a bit of chop, this is your window. It’s not going to be clean or pretty, but it’s the best of a bad bunch. For beginners, 4 ft is fine size-wise, but that wind will make it tricky.
After that Sunday morning, it’s back to small, choppy, and cross-shore for the rest of the outlook. The water temp on Monday the 6th was 64°, which is about 5° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s “much warmer than normal” and a nice little bonus if you do get wet.
Honestly, this is a lean period. Not much to get excited about. Keep an eye on it, but don’t hold your breath.
Keep your wax warm. Rusty.
