The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. I’ve looked at the charts for our stretch of coast and, to be honest, it’s a pretty bleak picture for the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing much to get excited about, but there’s one little window that might just deliver.
The forecast starts on Wednesday, the 19th of August with nothing doing – flat as a pancake – and that empty run carries on for days. There’s a few tiny lumps showing up on the 22nd and 23rd, but the wind is onshore and messy, so you wouldn’t bother paddling out for that ankle-biter. The water temp is sitting at 70°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year - you’ll be fine without a thick wetsuit if you’re waiting around.
We get a bit more energy around the 24th and 25th, with a 5 ft swell from the ENE on Monday morning, but the wind is howling at 22 mph from the wrong direction, making it choppy and lumpy. That combined swell energy is a weak 95, so it’s still not doing much. The rest of that week is a write-off.
The only proper standout in this entire 16-day window is shaping up for Monday, the 31st of August at Folkestone. This break is a beach and reef setup that’s sheltered, and it likes swell from the SW. Monday afternoon sees a solid 4 ft swell from the SW, with a period of 6 seconds – that’s short-period wind swell, not a groundswell, but it’ll have some push. The combined swell energy hits a moderate 136, the biggest number we’ve seen. Best of all, the wind swings around to the west at 22 mph, going cross-offshore, which will clean things right up. For an inconsistent spot like Folkestone, having that offshore wind and a bit of size is a real treat. It’s intermediate-level stuff, and you might see a few others out there as crowds are sometimes an issue, but with clean conditions and that SW direction, it’s your best bet.
After that, Tuesday the 1st of September keeps a bit of hope alive. The morning is clean with 4 ft from the SW and cross-off winds, but the afternoon jumps to 8 ft from the SSW with a combined energy of 451 – that’s strong energy. The wind stays cross-off, but that size is getting into expert-only territory. If you’re good enough, it could be a ripper, but it’s a long way out, so don’t bank on it yet.
The rest of the first week of September fades back to flatness. So, to put it simply: nearly two weeks of nothing, then a Monday and maybe Tuesday that could be worth a look. Keep the faith though – forecasts change, and it’s been a quiet run.
Rusty.
