The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for Folkestone over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I've gotta be straight with you – it's a pretty quiet stretch. The forecast is showing a whole lot of flat spells and messy conditions, with very little surf on offer. We're looking at a long gap of poor conditions, so don't get your hopes up too high.
The water temp is sitting at 69°, which is a solid 6° warmer than usual for this time of year. That's pretty unusual – feels more like a late summer bath than the English Channel.
Now, for the first few days, from Saturday the 22nd right through the end of the month, it's a write-off. We're talking tiny 0.3ft to 1ft waves with weak energy (1-3), and the wind is all over the place – cross, cross-on, and fresh breezes. The swell is just not there, and when it does try to show up, the wind messes it up. There's a small bump on Monday the 24th with 4ft from the ENE, but the wind is a fresh 22 mph cross-onshore, making it lumpy and ugly. Not worth paddling out for.
We get a bit of a lull again until the 29th of August morning. We've got a 2ft swell from the WSW and a clean cross-off wind from the W. The energy is moderate (43), but that's about the best we see. The swell is small and wobbly, but it's clean. The 30th and 31st are mostly flat again, with strong winds.
The first week of September is very similar. The 3rd of September Thursday morning shows a 4ft swell from the SW, with a moderate cross-off breeze from the W. The energy is moderate (49), and it will be clean. It's the best looking window in the whole outlook, but the swell is still short period (5 seconds), so it'll be a bit soft and sectiony. It's an intermediate wave at best.
After that, it's back to almost nothing. The 5th and 6th of September have tiny 0.3ft to 1ft waves with some clean offshore winds, but the energy is next to nothing (2-5). The swell is just too small to do anything with.
So, the only real standout, and I'm using that term loosely, is the morning of Thursday the 3rd of September. The 4ft SW swell with clean offshore winds is the best we're going to get. It's not a classic, but it's the only window where you might get a few half-decent, clean little waves to yourself. If you're desperate, that's your window.
Rusty.
