Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s happening at East Runton.
Honestly, mate, it’s a rough stretch ahead. We’ve got 16 days of forecasts here, and the hard truth is there’s hardly a decent wave in the lot. The water’s sitting at a very unusual 64° right now – that’s much warmer than normal for early July, which feels odd, but the surf just isn’t backing it up.
Right off the bat, Monday the 6th offers tiny 1ft to 2ft windswell, but the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-off, so it’s clean but fat and weak. The energy is pitiful, barely registering (5 to 8). This isn't surfable in any meaningful way.
Tuesday the 7th is dead flat with a zero energy reading for the morning, and a weak 2ft onshore mess in the afternoon. That’s a full day to skip.
Wednesday the 8th has the biggest swell of the early days – a 2ft groundswell from the north at 8 seconds, with gentle cross-shore wind. Energy is low-moderate (42). It's cleanish, but at a beginner break, this is ankle-slapping stuff.
From Thursday the 9th through Saturday the 11th, we’re stuck in that 1ft to 2ft range with onshore or cross-shore winds, weak energy, and generally poor surf conditions.
Now, there’s a little bump on Sunday the 12th. The NNE swell reaches 4ft by the morning with 5-second period, but it’s coming in with a 16-19 mph onshore wind. Energy hits 80, so there’s some push, but the onshore wind is going to chop it up. It’s too small and messy to really count as a standout.
Monday the 13th sees the highest energy of the whole period – a 4ft NNE swell at 7 seconds generating moderate energy (110-113). But again, it’s accompanied by a fresh 19 mph onshore wind. At a beach break like this, that’s going to be bumpy and blown out. Might be rideable for a strong paddler, but don't get excited.
After that, it trails off into tiny, weak, and onshore slop. From Thursday the 16th onward, we’re looking at 2ft or less, with energy dropping into single digits and mostly onshore or cross-onshore winds. The weekend of the 18th and 19th is barely a ripple, and the 20th is flat.
The only small window of clean conditions is right at the end, on Tuesday the 21st of July, with a 1ft NNW swell and a 16 mph cross-offshore wind. It’s clean but tiny – energy is just 10. For a beginner spot, you could paddle around, but there’s nothing to ride.
Bottom line: There is no standout session in this 16-day window. It’s one long stretch of poor to flat conditions. For a break that’s fairly consistent, this is an unusually barren run. The near-term is hopeless, and the long-range offers nothing to pin your hopes on. We need a serious change in the weather pattern. Hang up your board for now.
Rusty.
