The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’ve got a proper look at the next 16 days for East Runton, and to be honest, it’s a bit of a tough stretch. The good news is we’ve got a few windows of opportunity, but you’ll need to be patient.
The whole period starts off pretty flat and messy. The first real chance of a wave doesn’t show up until the 31st of August, so there’s a solid gap of about a week of poor conditions. The water temperature is sitting at 67° right now, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, so that’s a nice bonus for the wait.
Saturday 22nd August kicks things off, but it’s a write-off. We’ve got 4ft swell from the north, but it’s short-period at 7 seconds and the wind is a cross-on moderate breeze. Combined wave energy is weak (183). It’s choppy and poor.
Sunday 23rd through to Wednesday 27th is all tiny, weak, and onshore. Swell heights bounce between 2ft and 5ft, but the wind is consistently cross-on or onshore, keeping things messy. The energy is low, barely cracking 100 on the best days. It’s not worth paddling out.
Thursday 27th afternoon and Friday 28th see the wind finally swing offshore and cross-off, but the swell has completely dropped. We’re talking 2ft down to 1.0ft, and the energy is next to nothing (5-27). The conditions are clean, but there’s simply no wave to ride.
Then we hit a proper lull. From Saturday 29th through to Monday 31st morning, the swell is essentially flat. It’s clean, but with zero energy, you’re just floating.
Monday 31st August – now we’re talking. A pulse of new swell shows up for the morning. 5ft swell from the north-northwest, a short 7-second period, but combined energy jumps to 340 (moderate). The wind is a moderate cross-off. It’s clean, but that’s a solid size. For a beginner spot like East Runton, 5ft is pushing it – it’s going to be a bit much for the learners. The afternoon sees the swell drop to 4ft, with energy at 193, but the wind cranks up to a strong breeze. Still, Monday morning is the best we’ve seen.
Tuesday 1st September keeps the energy alive with a 3-4ft swell from the north, period around 8 seconds, and moderate cross-off winds. Energy is in the 111-168 range. Clean, but not a standout.
Wednesday 2nd September through Thursday 3rd September offers more of the same: 3-4ft swell from the north, with a longer period of 9 seconds on Thursday, which gives it a bit more push. Energy hits 203 on the 3rd. Winds are cross-off or slight cross, so conditions are clean. This is the most consistent run of the whole forecast.
Friday 4th September it starts to fade again. The swell drops to 2ft with fresh offshore wind in the morning, but it’s small and weak. By Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th, it’s all but gone, with tiny 0.7-1.0ft leftovers and strong winds.
The Pick: There’s no true standout here, but if you’re desperate, Monday 31st August morning is the biggest wave of the period at 5ft from the NNW, with clean cross-off wind. It’s the most energy you’ll see. Just be aware that 5ft at East Runton is a bit of a handful, especially for the beginners. The Thursday 3rd September session is a close second, with a nicer 4ft, 9-second swell from the north and clean conditions – a better all-rounder for a longer session.
Overall, it’s a lean run. The surf is mostly small, weak, and onshore, with a few clean days but no real juice. If you’ve got a kite, there’s a few days of strong cross-off wind that would be more interesting for that than paddle surfing.
Stay patient, keep an eye on the charts, and I’ll catch you out there.
Rusty.
