The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s lined up for the next couple of weeks in feet and miles per hour.
Honestly, it’s a pretty grim stretch ahead. The whole 16-day window is a real struggle. There’s a massive gap of flat or near-flat conditions right through until the middle of the second week and then only tiny, poor-quality waves pop up. The only real flicker of something surfable comes on the morning of Sunday the 23rd, but it’s not going to get anyone too excited.
Let’s start with that one standout. Sunday morning, 23rd August, at East Runton. The swell is a modest 3 ft from the NNE, with a middling period of 8 seconds. The combined swell energy is only 104, so it’s got a bit of push but nothing special. The real story here is the wind – it’s a glassy 3 mph from the north. That’s a major positive. The water temp is about average for the time of year. It’ll be clean, but with the break being fairly exposed, that NNE swell will wrap in okay. The crowds are listed as “sometimes” so you might find a few others out. It’s the only time in the whole window where the conditions are proper for a paddle. The rest of that Sunday afternoon the wind swings and it gets messy.
After that, the surf drops off a cliff. Monday the 24th is tiny, Tuesday the 25th sees a bigger 5 ft swell from the ENE, but with a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore wind, it’s just a lumpy, blown-out mess. The wave energy is 140, moderate, but useless with that wind. Wednesday the 26th through to the end of the month is mostly flat, with tiny, clean but weak swell. The rest of the first week is a write-off.
Moving into the second week, from the 31st August onwards, it’s a joke. Strong winds, tiny swell, and zero quality. The 1st and 2nd of September offer a glassy morning on the 2nd, but with a swell of just 0.3 ft, you’re better off staying in bed. The 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th are all flat with only tiny wind ripples. Absolutely nothing to recommend.
So, to sum it up: if you’re desperate, the only window is the glassy morning of Sunday the 23rd at East Runton. It’s not going to be epic, but it’s clean. Otherwise, the boards are staying in the van for the next two weeks.
Stay safe, Rusty.
