The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about what we've got on the menu for the next couple of weeks. I'll level with you, it's a tough one. We're looking at a long, dry spell before anything even worth paddling out for shows up.
The first real chance of a wave comes on the morning of Sunday, the 23rd of August. Up until then, from Thursday the 20th through to Saturday the 22nd, it's a write-off. We've got a combination of very small swell with onshore or cross-onshore winds, making for choppy, poor surf. It's one of those stretches where you leave the board in the car.
Sunday morning swings in a little bit of hope. East Runton will see a NNE swell coming through at about 3 ft, with a period of 8 seconds – not a ton of power, but it’s something. The combined energy is only in the moderate range at (115). The big positive here is a light W wind shifting cross-offshore, which will keep the surface pretty clean. It's a beginner-friendly wave at that size, so if you're just getting your feet wet, this is your window. The water temperature is running much warmer than usual for this time of year by about 3°.
After that Sunday morning window, we slip back into small, messy conditions for the rest of the week. The winds stay cross or cross-on, and the swell drops off. There's a couple of clean, offshore windows on the 26th and 27th of August – Wednesday and Thursday – but the swell is tiny, barely 2 ft to 1 ft. Not even worth suiting up for, to be honest. You can look at it, but you can't ride it.
The outlook doesn't improve much. The first week of September shows some 4 ft swell on Wednesday the 2nd, but it's being hammered by a near gale cross-shore wind that will make it a washing machine out there. That setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
So, where does that leave us? The one standout, and I mean the *only* one, is that morning session on Sunday the 23rd of August at East Runton. It's not going to be epic, but it's clean, it's small, and it’s rideable for those learning. For the rest of us, it’s a waiting game. The forecast can change, but as it stands, there's a big gap of no-good surf from the 24th right through to the end of the outlook.
Stay patient, stay sharp. The ocean will come around.
