The Lowdown
Gather 'round, crew. Let’s talk about East Runton. Well, I’ll be straight with you – it's a tough stretch coming up. We’ve got a long, quiet spell to get through with barely a ripple worth paddling for. The water’s sitting at about 67°F, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least you won’t freeze while you’re waiting.
Let’s get into it. This Saturday morning, the 22nd of August, we’ve got a 5ft swell from the north, but the period is a short 6 seconds – that’s weak windswill at 159 energy units. A fresh 19 mph NNW cross-onshore wind is going to make it lumpy and pretty poor. No joy there. That afternoon, and all through Sunday and Monday, the size drops and the wind keeps messing things up. Tiny, weak, choppy surf – not worth the session.
Tuesday the 25th sees a little bump up to 4ft from the east, but it’s still short-period and blown out by a fresh 19 mph onshore wind. Wednesday the 26th morning, we finally get a clean moment – 3ft, light offshore from the southwest, and clean. But it’s tiny, and the energy is only 59. You might get a few little waist-high rollers if you’re desperate for a paddle.
From there, it drops right off. Thursday the 27th through to Saturday the 29th, we’ve got clean conditions but the swell is mostly under 2ft with very low energy, even hitting single digits. A few clean mornings with offshore winds, but you’ll be floating around on a 1.0ft or 1ft wave. Not really surfable. Sunday the 30th is the same story – glassy and clean, but next to nothing.
We then roll into the first week of September with similar conditions. Clean with cross-offshore winds, but the swell is tiny – 0.7ft to 2ft at best. The energy barely climbs above 30. On Wednesday the 2nd of September morning, we get strong offshore winds from the SSW at 25 mph and a 1ft wave – clean but impossible to paddle into. It’s all show, no go. Even by Saturday the 5th of September, that jump to 4ft from the WNW has a short 5 second period and a fresh 19 mph wind making it a messy, blown-out situation.
So, what’s the standout? Honestly, there isn’t one. If you forced me to pick the best of a bad bunch, it would be Wednesday morning the 26th of August – the 3ft with a light offshore and clean surface. But it’s still tiny. This is a lean period. A lot of clean but tiny days, and the few windows of size come with bad wind. Keep the board in the car, but maybe save the wax.
