The Lowdown
Alright, mate. Rusty here.
Look, I'm gonna level with you. The next couple of weeks are a bit of a write-off for a proper surf. There's just nothing doing. We've got a long dry spell right through until the end of August and into early September where the swell is tiny and the wind's all over the shop.
Our only real option that even gets a sniff of a wave is East Runton. It's a beginner-friendly spot, and it's fairly consistent with swell, but for the next week and a half the quality is just not there. The waves are mostly under 3 ft, short period, and the wind is constantly cross-onshore or onshore, making it choppy and lumpy. The combined wave energy is very weak, sitting at just 104 on Sunday morning.
We do see a slight uptick around Monday, August 31st and Tuesday, September 1st. The swell picks up a bit, around 4 ft to 4 ft from the NNE and N, with period hovering around 7 to 8 seconds. The combined energy gets into the moderate range, hitting 117 on Monday afternoon and 191 on Tuesday morning. But the catch? The wind is either cross-shore or onshore, so the surface will be messy. It’s surfable, but nothing to get excited about.
For the second week of September, the models are just showing tiny, weak pulses. The combined energy drops right down to single digits and the swell height barely breaks 2 ft. We get a few days of offshore wind and clean conditions, but there's no power behind the waves. That setup is more interesting for a kite than a paddle.
The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no drama there. It's just a classic quiet patch. We might get a change in the forecast, but for now, it's a long wait. Keep an eye on it, but don't plan your week around it.
Rusty.
