The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this forecast for East Runton is a bit of a tough one to write. The honest truth is, there’s nothing in the 16-day window that I’d call a proper surf session. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor surf conditions, with wave heights that barely get out of the ankle-snapping range. The water is a notably warm 66°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only highlight.
The first real chance at anything comes on Tuesday morning, the 25th of August, when we see a pulse of short-period swell push in from the ENE. The combined energy jumps up to a moderate 164, and the swell height hits 5 ft. But here’s the kicker – the wind is a fresh cross-onshore at 19 mph, making it lumpy and choppy. For a beginner-friendly spot like this, 5 ft is already pushing it, and with that wind, it’s more of a messy paddle than a proper wave. After that, it drops back down to tiny, weak stuff for the rest of the week.
We do see a few clean, glassy moments on the Sunday the 30th of August, with offshore winds and even a glassy period on the Sunday afternoon. But the swell is tiny – only 2 ft – and the combined energy is a weak 27. You’d be bobbing around more than surfing.
The pattern doesn’t really improve into the first week of September. There’s a small bump in energy on Tuesday the 1st of September, with a 3 ft swell from the north, but the wind is a fresh cross-shore, making it lumpy. The rest of the period is a mix of tiny waves and onshore winds. We’re looking at a 16-day blank run, which is a bit of a bummer, but for a spot like this, it’s not unheard of. Sometimes you just have to wait for the next forecast to change. Keep the board in the car, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
