The Lowdown
Right folks, Rusty here. We’ve got a pretty bleak run of surf for the next 16 days around here. I’ll level with you, if you’re an East Runton local, it’s going to be a long stretch of flat, small, or just plain messy conditions. The pickings are so slim that you might as well hang the wettie up for a bit. There’s a massive gap from now all the way through to the end of August with hardly a wave worth paddling for.
The first real flicker of life doesn’t show up until Friday the 28th of August. You’ll see a jump in size with a 5ft swell pushing in from the NW, but it’s coming with a short period of 6 seconds. That’s weak energy for sure (149). It gets a little interesting because the wind is blowing offshore from the SSW, which is a bonus for making the surface clean. Still, at that size, it’s a bit much for beginners, and with that short period, it’s going to be pretty soft and gutless.
After that, we drift back into the doldrums. On Saturday the 29th of August, the swell drops hard to 2ft from the N, but it’s carrying a long period of 12 seconds. The combined energy is still low (118), and with an offshore wind from the WSW, it’ll look pretty but won’t have any push. The rest of the forecast into early September stays tiny, with 1.0ft to 2ft waves, mostly onshore or cross-shore winds, and often just plain choppy. You’ll get a few glassy moments on the 31st of August morning, but that 1.0ft groundswell isn’t going to get you out of your wetsuit.
Honestly, if you’re looking for something to do, the wind on the 28th of August might make the water look interesting for a kite, but for a proper paddle, it’s a write-off. The water temp anomaly isn’t mentioned, so it’s about average for the time of year, nothing to write home about.
Rusty.
