The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the charts for East Runton over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you: this is a tough stretch. The finder is showing a big fat zero on the scoreboard for the entire 16-day run, which means we’re not looking at any real quality surf windows. Sometimes the ocean just goes quiet, and this is one of those times.
The water temperature is sitting at 68°F, which is a good 5°F warmer than the long-term average for this time of year. That’s very unusual – way warmer than you’d expect for late August around here. Who knows, maybe that’s a sign of something shifting, but it ain’t helping the waves.
The first few days, from Wednesday the 19th through to the end of the month, you’re mostly looking at tiny, weak swell. The highest energy we see is on Friday the 21st afternoon, when the combined energy hits 449 (moderate wave energy) with a 7 ft swell from the north. But that’s accompanied by a strong 25 mph onshore wind – it’s going to be a messy, blown-out scene. Not a paddle-surfing day. Honestly, with that strong north wind and lumpy cross-onshore conditions, it’s more of a kiteboarding setup than anything for a surfboard. The swell period is a short 7 seconds, so it’s just local wind chop, not proper groundswell.
The rest of the period is a real drag. We’ve got a long stretch of days with swell heights under 3 ft, mostly between 1 ft and 3 ft, and combined energy values that are either weak (under 100) or just barely scraping into the moderate range. The wind does turn cleaner on a few occasions – like Wednesday morning the 26th with a light offshore from the south, and a few days later on the 29th and 30th with cross-offshore breezes – but the swell is just too small to make anything of it. You’d be floating around waiting for a ripple.
The best of a bad bunch is probably Saturday the 29th afternoon. The swell bumps up to 6 ft from the north, with a combined energy of 207 (moderate) and a clean cross-offshore wind from the west at 19 mph. The period is still short at 6 seconds, so it’s not going to have much shape or power, and the onshore swell direction isn’t ideal for the optimum NNE direction. But if you’re desperate, you could find a few lumpy, clean-faced waves. It’s not good, but it’s the least bad option.
After that, the surf fades away again. The last few days of the forecast into early September are tiny – under 2 ft and very low energy. The wind stays clean, but there’s just nothing to ride.
Bottom line: we’ve got a 16-day blank window here. It’s a quiet period for East Runton, and that’s not unusual for this area when the charts look like this. The best chance to get wet is the afternoon of Saturday the 29th, but keep your expectations low. Check back in a few days – forecasts can change, and a decent swell might pop up.
Rusty.
