The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a proper look at what’s cookin’ for our little stretch of coast here. First up, I gotta be straight with you – this run ain’t lookin’ pretty. It’s one of those long, quiet spells where you might be better off waxin’ the longboard just in case, but don’t hold your breath.
So, the forecast kicks off Sunday the 19th of July with a pulse of swell at East Runton (Norfolk) – we’re talkin’ about a 5 ft wave from the north, which sounds alright on paper, but the wind is tearin’ out of the NNW at 19 mph, slappin’ it cross-onshore. That combo gives us a combined energy of 381 – moderate energy, but messy. The water’s sittin’ at a balmy 65°, which is much warmer than we’d normally expect for this time of year – that’s over two degrees above average, so you can feel the difference. Still, the surf is poor, so it’s a no-go for paddlin’. Might be worth a look for the kite crew though.
From Monday the 20th right through to around Thursday the 30th of July, it’s a pretty grim pattern. Swells stay small to middlin’ – mostly around 2 ft to 4 ft – and the wind just won’t play ball. It’s cross-onshore nearly every session, mostly from the north or NNW, with speeds between 9 mph and 25 mph. The combined energy drops into weak territory often, with values like 50, 36, or 77 – just no grunt. Every single entry flags poor surf conditions. There’s a brief flash on Friday the 24th where we get a light cross-offshore breeze from the SSE at 6 mph and the wave comment says “clean,” but the swell is only 2 ft with a 6-second period – tiny, weak, and combined energy of just 24. It’s technically clean but there’s barely a bump.
Now, there is a little spike in energy around Wednesday the 29th of July – you can see it in the figures: 5 ft swell from the NNW, period around 8 seconds, and combined energy jumps to 291 in the morning then 479 in the afternoon. That’s moderate to strong energy on paper. But the catch? That cross-shore wind from the WNW at 25 mph in the morning and 16 mph in the afternoon, churnin’ it into a lumpy, messy cross-chop. No good for surf craft – again, that’s kite territory if you ask me. This stretch is a beach break and it’s just not shapin’ up for paddle surfing.
After that, the first few days of August are a total washout – swells drop to 0.3 ft to 1.0 ft, combined energy below 30, and the wind stays cross or onshore. Not a single session worth paddlin’ out for in this whole 16-day window.
So, there’s no standout session here. If I had to pick the least ugly option, it’d be that Friday the 24th morning with clean conditions – but you’ll be fightin’ for a 2 ft dribble. It’s a tough run for East Runton, but that’s the way the charts fall sometimes. Forecasts can change, but right now it’s a flat, windy stretch that’s more about waitin’ than paddlin’.
Rusty.
