Alright, let me give you the outlook on East Runton in feet.
We’re looking at a pretty lean run here. The whole 16-day window is filled with small, weak, and often messy surf, so there isn’t a single day I’d get genuinely excited about. The best we can hope for is a few sessions that are rideable, but you’ll have to manage your expectations. The water is way warmer than normal for this time of year, around 65°, which is a big anomaly of about 7° warmer – feels like summer has come early, but the swell hasn't got the memo.
Starting off, the first week is a write-off. The waves are tiny, mostly under 3ft, with poor wind directions and weak energy levels, typically between 5 and 58. That swell direction is all over the place too, and the periods are short, so nothing with any real push.
Moving into the second week, things don’t improve much. By Sunday the 12th of July, we get some size bumping up to 5ft from the NE, but the energy is still only moderate at 110, and it’s onshore wind, so it’ll be a messy close-out at this beach break. The 13th of July sees the biggest swells of the window, with 5ft from the NNE and energy climbing to 184, but again the wind is straight onshore at 30 km/h, making it a choppy, blown-out mess. That wave state is listed as unknown, but with those winds, it’s not going to be pretty.
After a week of onshore slop, we get a brief flicker of hope on Saturday the 18th of July. The morning shows 3ft from the north with a 7-second period and a clean, cross-offshore wind from the west at 19 mph. Energy is a moderate 112. That’s the best combo in the whole forecast – clean enough to make the small waves rideable, but still tiny. The following day, Sunday the 19th of July, gives us glassy conditions in the morning with a light N/northwest wind and 3ft, 7-second north swell. That’s perfect for a beginner to have a super clean, small session, even if the waves lack power.
After that, the swell fades out again into the final days. Nothing in this whole window stands out as a true standout. It’s a long stretch of bad luck for East Runton. For the size of swell we see, and the poor wind alignment on most days, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on a lot of those afternoons.
