The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
To be brutally honest, the 16-day window is a tough one for this stretch. We’re looking at a long dry spell of poor surf conditions that lasts from now until the end of August. There’s a gap of about 12 days where the waves are just not worth paddling out for, thanks to a mix of weak energy, onshore winds, and messy, choppy lineups. The wind is mostly cross-on or strong, and the swell is either too small or too short-period to do anything with.
The very first glimmer of something surfable comes on Sunday, 23rd August. It’s still tiny, with a 3 ft swell from the north and a period of 8 seconds. The wave energy is weak (86), so it’s mellow, but the wind goes glassy in the morning. That’s a rare clean window. East Runton might be worth a dawn session with a longboard, but don’t expect any power. It’s a beginner-friendly sandbar, and the crowds are sometimes a factor – but on a day this small, you’ll likely have the place to yourself.
The standout moment, and the only real highlight on the calendar, comes on Wednesday, 2nd September. The north swell kicks up to 5 ft with a period of 7 seconds, and the energy jumps to 246 (moderate). That’s more like it. The catch? The wind is cross-on in the morning, but lightens up in the afternoon. It’s a bit too big for beginners, but for the experienced crew, expect some punchy, short-period waves. The period is under 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bit sectiony and a bit of a paddle battle, but there’s enough juice to get a few fun ones.
The next day, Thursday, 3rd September, is also worth a mention. The wind goes offshore (SSW) and the swell holds at 3 ft from the north with an 8-second period. The energy is moderate (116), and with clean offshore conditions, the waves will be well-shaped. This is the best clean option of the whole run, but it’s still only a moderate day.
After that, the swell fades and the wind turns strong again, so the window closes. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no wetsuit surprises.
Bottom line: Don’t hold your breath for the first 12 days. Mark Wednesday, 2nd September and Thursday, 3rd September as the only real chances for a decent session. The 2nd has the size, the 3rd has the glass. Pick your poison.
Rusty.
