The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. We’ve got a pretty grim stretch ahead on the cards for the next couple of weeks. It’s one of those runs where you might be better off checking the wind for a kite session rather than pulling out the shortboard.
First up, the good news is basically non-existent. The entire 16-day window is a write-off for decent surf. We’re looking at a long gap starting now and stretching all the way through to the end of the first week of September. The first and only real chance to even get wet is a brief, very ordinary window on Sunday morning, the 23rd of August. That’s a full two days away from now.
Sunday morning, the 23rd, at East Runton, we’ll see a tiny pulse of swell from the NNE, coming in at about 3 ft with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is weak, sitting at only 112. The wind is a light WSW, blowing cross-off, which will keep the surface clean. It’s surfable, but it’s incredibly ordinary. The water temp is about what you’d expect for this time of year, nothing unusual.
After that, the plug gets pulled. The rest of the weekend and all of the following week sees nothing but poor conditions. From Monday the 24th through to the 5th of September, we’re dealing with tiny, weak, and often wind-chopped waves. The wind is mostly cross or onshore, and the swell is small and short-period. There’s a bit of a clean window on the 26th and 27th, but the swell is so small (1 ft to 2 ft) and the energy is negligible (15 to 39), it’s barely a ripple. By the 28th, it’s all but flat with offshore winds, but the swell is just 0.7 ft. That’s not a surfable wave.
The long-range forecast into the first week of September doesn’t offer any hope either. The 1st and 2nd of September bring some clean conditions but again, tiny, weak swell. The 3rd of September sees a slight bump to 4 ft, but the period is short at 6 seconds and the wind is cross-shore or onshore, so it’s choppy and messy. The combined energy is still weak at 78. It’s a no-go.
So, the long and short of it: there is no standout session. The only real option is a very ordinary, tiny wave on Sunday morning, the 23rd. If you’re a beginner, that 3 ft is fine, but the quality is poor. For anyone else, it’s a skip. The whole 16 days is a bust. You’re better off waiting for the next system to roll through.
Rusty.
