Table - best surf conditions forecast for East Runton over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough one. The next 16 days are looking pretty bleak for a proper surf. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak, onshore slop, and only a brief moment where things get a bit more interesting, but even then, it’s a messy affair.
The whole outlook is dominated by a persistent run of tiny, short-period windswell and cross-onshore winds. From now, right through until the 19th of July, the waves are pathetic, the energy is pitiful, and the wind is just ruining what little shape there is. It’s a flat spell, plain and simple. The best of a bad bunch looks like it might be on the 20th and 21st of July, but don’t get your hopes up too high.
The only real pulse of energy comes in on Monday the 20th of July. East Runton sees a jump in swell height to 5 ft, coming from the NNE. The combined energy hits 182 (moderate energy) by the morning and 225 (moderate energy) in the afternoon. That’s a proper push of water compared to the rest of the run. But here’s the catch – the wind is onshore from the NE, blowing at 9 to 12 mph. That’s going to put a chop on the surface and make it a lumpy, bumpy affair. The period is short at 6 to 7 seconds, so it’s all windswell, not groundswell. It’s not clean, but it’s the only day with any real size. This is a day for the experienced locals who don’t mind a battle, not a beginner's wave. The water temp is about average for the time of year.
The following day, Tuesday the 21st of July, the swell drops back to 4 ft, but the period stretches out to 9 seconds, which is a better sign. The energy is still moderate at 193. The wind is still onshore from the NE, but lighter at 12 mph. This might offer a slightly cleaner, more lined-up wave than the 20th, but it’s still onshore, so don’t expect perfection.
Beyond that, it’s a rapid fade back to nothing. By the 22nd, we’re down to 2 ft and the energy is gone. The last week of the outlook is a write-off, with flat, ankle-biters and messy winds.
Honestly, if you’re desperate for a paddle, the 20th and 21st are your only window, but it’s going to be a slog. The wind just isn’t playing ball. If it was a bit more offshore, this could have been a fun little window, but as it stands, it’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a clean surf session. Keep your eyes on the charts, things can change. This area is known for flat spells, so this is pretty normal.
Rusty.
