Table - best surf conditions forecast for East Runton over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – I’ve looked over the forecast for our stretch of coastline, and I gotta say, it’s a tough one. We’ve got a full 16 days ahead, and for most of it, you’ll be better off doing something else. There’s a real dry spell at the start. The first bit of anything that even looks like a wave won’t show up until Sunday the 12th, and even then, it’s going to be pretty average.
So here’s the deal. From Friday the 10th right through to Saturday the 11th, the surf is flat, mate. We’re talking tiny 1ft to 2ft mush with onshore winds. Don’t even bother.
Things try to pick up on Sunday the 12th. Early morning sees a little bump from the NE at 4ft, but it’s blown out with a 16 mph cross-onshore breeze making it choppy. The combined swell energy is weak, sitting around 97. By the afternoon, the wind goes fully onshore and it’s just messy.
Through the first half of the following week, we get a bit more push, but the wind just won’t play ball. Monday the 13th has 4ft from the NNE, but that onshore wind is relentless at 16 mph. Tuesday and Wednesday are similar stories with 3ft to 3ft of short period windswell and a cross-onshore wind. Nothing clean, nothing lined up.
Now, there *is* a flicker of hope right at the end of the period, but it’s a long way off. On Monday the 20th, we finally see some proper size roll in. The swell is coming from the N at 5ft to 5ft with a period jumping up to 9 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy hits a strong 407, so there’s plenty of power in the water. Problem is, it’s still a bit onshore and choppy. The best chance for a decent wave that day would be East Runton (Norfolk) in the afternoon, when the wind swings NNE at 9 mph and goes straight offshore. That’s your window. The swell drops a little to 5ft, but with glassy-offshore conditions, it could clean right up. That’s the standout, but at that size it’s more for the lads who know what they’re doing. The crowd factor at East Runton can pop up, so expect a few locals out.
Tuesday the 21st looks cleaner but smaller, with the swell dropping off to 3-3ft and that offshore wind still holding in the morning. A nice recovery session.
After the 21st, it fades away again fast. The 22nd and 23rd see the swell drop back below 2ft and the wind messing things up. The 24th is flat and the 25th is totally dead with a zero reading.
So to wrap it up: the first week and a half is a write-off. Your best bet is to pencil in Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st. The 20th sees the biggest swell and the best chance of a clean wave if that offshore wind works for us. Keep an eye on it, but it’s a promising long-range call, not a guarantee.
Rusty.
