The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day window for the region is a write-off. There isn’t a single session that’s worth paddling out for. The whole forecast is a long, flat, and messy stretch with no real surf to speak of.
We’re looking at a run starting now and going all the way through to the end of the month. The first week or so has a bit of wave height, but it’s all junk. On Wednesday the 15th, we’ve got a tiny 3ft swell from the NE, but it’s a short-period 5-second windswell, and the wind is howling onshore from the NNE at 16 mph. The water is a very unusual 65°, which is a massive 6° warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s the only thing noteworthy. The combined energy is a pathetic 47 – weak as dishwater.
Things don’t improve. Through the rest of the week and into the next, the swell bumps up a bit, but it’s always accompanied by onshore or cross-onshore winds. On Saturday the 19th, we get a 5ft swell from the north with a slightly better 8-second period, but the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore, making it lumpy and blown out. The energy gets up to 302 (moderate), but it’s useless for a clean wave. This is a beach break setup, and with the wind and chop, it’s honestly looking more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The tail end of the month is even worse. By the 25th, we’re down to 1ft slop, and the 28th of July has a glassy morning but with a 1ft swell that’s generating a combined energy of just 9. There’s a brief moment on the 29th morning with a light offshore wind, but the swell is a pathetic 3ft from the NW on a 4-second period. It’s clean, but there’s no power in the water.
There are no standouts. No hidden gems. Just a blank run of surf that’s not worth the wetsuit rash. The area is normally pretty dependent on specific conditions, but this is a particularly poor run. Forecasts can change, but right now, save your energy.
Rusty.
