Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on offer at East Runton over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a grim picture for surfers. We’re looking at a solid 16-day stretch where there’s barely a ripple worth paddling for. The swell energy is weak, topping out at just 57 (combined energy) right at the end, and most days it’s sitting below 40. That’s barely a bump.
The best you can say is that the first week has a few moments where it’s clean, but without any proper swell to work with. Starting Saturday the 4th, we’ve got a tiny 2 ft from the north, period a short 7 seconds, with a fresh cross-offshore wind – looks pretty but there’s zero push. That theme carries on through Sunday and into Monday: tiny surf, poor conditions. By Tuesday the 7th, we’re still looking at 1 ft and cross-off winds, but again, just not enough oomph.
Wednesday the 8th brings a slight bump to 3 ft from the NNW, but it’s cross-on and choppy – not worth getting wet for. The rest of that week and into the second week is a write-off: heights under 2 ft, short periods under 8 seconds, and mostly onshore or cross-onshore winds. The water temp anomaly is about average for the time of year – no surprises there.
Now, the only real stand-out, and I use that term loosely, comes on Friday the 17th into Saturday the 18th. We finally see some steady 3–4 ft northeast swell, with combined energy hitting 57. The period is still short at 5 seconds, but there’s a little more weight to it. Friday morning has light cross-onshore wind, but by Saturday morning it’s a moderate cross-onshore with chop – messy, but it’s the biggest surf in the whole run. That said, it’s still not great, and the break is a fairly exposed beach setup, so expect crumbly, weak waves. Honestly, for a beach break with short period, this might look more interesting for kite surfers than paddle surfers. If you’re an absolute beginner and just want to bob around, the early mornings of the first week with clean conditions could work, but don’t expect to ride much.
Crowds? East Runton is listed as “sometimes” crowded, so when it’s this flat, you’ll have it to yourself. The break is fairly consistent but with no real swell, that doesn’t mean much.
Bottom line: there is no good surf on offer in this 16-day window. The area tends to have blank runs, and this is one of them. Forecast could always change, so keep an eye out, but for now, leave the board at home.
Rusty.
