Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what the next couple of weeks has in store for us.
Alright folks, I'm not gonna sugarcoat it – the next 16 days are a real mixed bag, and honestly, it's mostly a pretty quiet period with very little to get excited about. We’re looking at a long stretch of flat or weak, wind-affected conditions on offer for East Runton.
The water temperature is sitting at a very unusual 65°, which is a massive 6° warmer than normal for the time of year – that's a real oddity for July, might make the booties feel a bit overkill.
The first week, from Tuesday the 7th all the way through to about the 17th of July, is pretty grim. We've got days of tiny, messy, cross-onshore slop. Swell heights mostly hovering around 1 ft to 2 ft from the NNE, with a short, weak period. The combined wave energy is mostly in the low single or double digits (14 to 70), which is just gutless. You'd be fighting a losing battle with an onshore breeze and a choppy surface. Not worth the drive. Even the few days where the swell bumps up a touch around the 12th and 13th are still plagued by onshore winds and that messy, weak energy.
There's a bit of a potential shift around the 18th and 19th. Saturday the 18th sees the swell finally start to build, with a 5 ft to 6 ft pulse from the north. The combined energy jumps to a moderate 173 on Saturday morning, and then a solid 271 on the Saturday afternoon. That's more like it in terms of size, but the wind is onshore and cross-onshore – so it'll be a choppy mess for paddle surfing. That kind of power in a beach break setup with an onshore wind might be more interesting for the kite crew than us.
Then, the best chance of anything actually decent falls on Sunday the 19th of July. The morning has a solid 5 ft NW swell, with a long period of 10 seconds, giving it a very strong energy reading of 758. That’s proper groundswell. The only caveat is the wind is a moderate cross-shore, so there will be some chop. But keep an eye on the Sunday afternoon – the wind drops to glassy, dead calm, with a 4 ft swell from the north at a long 9-second period and a moderate 203 energy reading. That's a clean window. If you can get on it that afternoon when the wind shuts off, the waves should have some shape, be clean, and the long period will mean good energy and mellow sets for paddling out, though it might break a little straight. That is the standout session of the whole outlook, without a doubt.
After that, it dribbles away again into tiny, weak surf for the following week. So for the die-hards, you’re waiting until the 19th for that one chance at a glassy, clean session. Crowds are sometimes a factor at East Runton, so if that Sunday arvo window fires, expect company.
Stay patient.
Rusty.
