The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. The next couple of weeks around here are looking pretty grim for a proper paddle, but there’s a light at the end of the tunnel if you’re patient.
Right now, and for the next week and a bit, it’s a write-off. The swell is small, the wind is messy, and the energy just isn’t there. We’ve got a long stretch of poor surf conditions from today, Friday the 21st, all the way through to the end of the month. The water is sitting at 67°F, which is much warmer than we’d expect for this time of year, so that’s a weird one.
The only real glimmer of hope in that first week comes on the morning of Sunday the 23rd at East Runton. The wind is glassy, which is a massive positive, and we’re looking at a clean 3ft swell from the NNE. It’s surfable, but it’s nothing to get excited about. The swell energy is weak (109), and the crowd is likely to be around. The swell period is short at 8 seconds, so it won’t have much push. It’s a beginner-friendly option, but don’t expect any gems.
The real standout, the one that’s been sitting in the long-range forecast, is the morning of Friday the 4th of September. That’s a full two weeks out, so keep your fingers crossed, but this one has potential. East Runton is looking at an 8ft swell from the north with a 9-second period. That’s a big jump – the combined energy is massive at 1108. The wind is glassy again, which is exactly what you want. This is strong, powerful swell, and the entire setup is clean. It’s going to be a proper session, but that size is for experienced surfers only. Beginners should stay well clear.
The afternoon of that same Friday, the 4th, holds up okay too with a 7ft swell from the NNW, but the wind is cross-offshore and the energy drops to 614. Still good, but the morning is the peak.
The following morning, Saturday the 5th of September, we’ve got a 5ft north swell with offshore wind from the southwest. It’s good, but it’s a step down from the day before.
So, the summary is: forget the next week. It’s flat and messy. Mark your calendar for the morning of the 4th of September. That’s the one to watch. Get ready for a proper session if the forecast holds.
Rusty.
