Table - best surf conditions forecast for East Runton over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough one for East Runton. The whole 16-day window is a bit of a struggle, and I’m not gonna sugarcoat it. We’ve got no standout days, no mornings where you’d be racing to get the wetsuit on. The problem is that almost every session is plagued by onshore or cross-onshore winds, and the swell direction is just never quite right to make the most of what little energy is out there.
The opening few days, from Friday the 10th through to the start of the following week, are tiny. We’re looking at a weak 1 ft from the NNE and ENE, with short, gutless periods of 4 to 6 seconds. The combined energy is basically non-existent, reading just 8 to 10. It’s poor. Even with the wind being cross-shore, there’s nothing to ride.
The middle of the run, from Sunday the 12th through to about Thursday the 16th, sees a slight bump in size, getting up to about 4 ft. The combined energy climbs into the low hundreds (100 to 120), so there’s a bit more push, but it’s still mainly short-period, wind-affected slop. The wind is almost always onshore from the NE, turning it into a messy, choppy mess. It’s not really surfable for a fun wave.
Now, around Friday the 17th and into the weekend of the 18th and 19th, the swell does build. We’re talking 5 ft to 7 ft, with the combined energy jumping into the 150 to 360 range. That’s a moderate energy level, but the wind stays locked in from the N and NNE, hammering the beach. The word “poor” is in every single comment. With that much wind and a beach setup, this honestly looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer. The waves will be lumpy and blown out.
The peak of the run hits Monday the 20th, with a 8 ft swell from the N and a period creeping up to 9 seconds. The combined energy hits a strong 699 to 805, so there’s real power. But again, it’s a cross-onshore wind from the N at 15 mph. For a beginner break, that’s getting too big and messy; for an expert, it’s just not clean. The direction is wrong for the spot.
The last few days from the 22nd to the 25th drop off sharply. The swell fades back to 3 ft or less, energy drops to single or double digits, and we’re back to tiny, non-existent surf. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, but that’s the only thing that’s normal.
So, bottom line: there’s no surf to get excited about here. The whole 16 days is a write-off for East Runton. Stick with it, the forecasts can change, but right now, leave the boards in the car.
Rusty.
